[newbie] Lnx4win
Hi all, Have been trying to install lnx4win, from the new 7.0 release, tonight on another puter, I have been having problems with actually getting to the graphical install. I did see the graphical install but did not have enough room so I uninstalled, and ended up back to the RH 1.1 install where it fails at mounting cdrom...I don't know what I did to get the graphical as I have been trying to get it installed for about 3Hrs now, or about 10-11 attempts, seems that after the install.bat your move to the "installed" lnx4win folder and run setup.bat, I thinks at that point loadlin is supposed to take over but my puter reboots.Any ideas? sean __ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Sat, 15 Jan 2000 02:51:15 -0600 Attempting a first-time installation. The goal is to end up with an Apache server providing FTP to the outside world and internet access (proxy server??) and storage space to home machines. What I bought was 2 36.5 gig Maxtor IDE drives which I'm under the impression Linux will RAID together into one redundant 36.5 gig space. These are the master slave on the primary IDE (the only port that supports ATA66). On the secondary port is a CDROM drive that can handle 4 disks as 4 separate drive letters and an LS120 superfloppy drive. The first problem I ran into was the motherboard BIOS wasn't new enough to handle 30 gig drives. That has been fixed now. But Linux can't seem to figure out how to partition those drives. It doesn't matter if I let the installation program try Disk Druid or Fdisk, either way there is an error message (not there long enough to read it, though). It doesn't matter if LBA is on or off and it doesn't matter if I boot from the floppy or the CD, the result is the same. So I guess what I need to know is: 1) Should LBA be enabled or not? 2) Do I need a newer version of Linux? 3) Could the problem be that I'm not using a REAL floppy drive? -- Windows: 32 bit graphical interface for a 16 bit patch for an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- Windows: 32 bit graphical interface for a 16 bit patch for an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit processor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

[newbie] DHCPCD Problem
I recently installed Mandrake 7 on a new machine and I am having trouble getting a dynamic IP address from my ISP. I have had no trouble in the past using Redhat and Slackware (with another ISP). I have tried using Pump and DHCPCD and when I run them both I get a timeout saying no server responded. I have the NICs going through a hub, so I know a good connection is made with the NICs. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Could it be that my ISP is looking for the Mac address of NIC on the old machine and won't assign an IP address to another card? Re: [newbie] MandrakeUpdate broken?
Yes! I am having the same problem. It looks like the mirrors have changed to no longer have the update directory. I don't know why or what to do about it though. Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] Salsa Doom wrote: Hello all. Quick question, has anyone gotten mandrake update to work? I remember using it with 6.0 a while ago, it worked pretty sweet. RE: [newbie] Stupid questions
There are of course recources on the internet; www.linuxnewbie.org www.linuxdocs.org Various BBS like the ones at linuxnewbie and anandtech. There are the HOWTO's on the CD and this list. ;) I don't think that all questions asked are stupid but I do agree that a little reading or investigation would be more helpful than relying on this mail list. Just checking, I haven't gotten anything since the sixth.
Re: [Re: [newbie] XF86 problem]
i tried this program, and yet it still will not display other resolutions. i've also manually adjusted the XF86Config file to add them in. no luck. could it be something to do with switching ctrl/caps lock functions? i haven't actually changed the defaults, but could that possibly be screwing anything up? and while i'm on this topic, is it possible to make the alt key do the work of the esc key? whenever i wish to jump to the beginning of a command line, i have to press esc. alt would be much more convenient thanks. Michael Scottaline wrote: "Muad'Dib" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK, i repeat: i can't get KDE to switch screen resolutions. that means, that whereas most LINUX users upon hitting the ctrl+alt+numpad-plussign/minussign would be able to resize their desktop, i cannot. that is the problem. the small fonts, et alia, are the corollary. i don't need this for an app. i just would like to be able to exercise my right to switch screen resolutions should i so please. :) that's all. === Then you need to have more than one resolution listed xf86config file. Try XF86Setup It's totally graphical. It will allow you to choose several possible resolutions (e.g., 640x480; 800x600; etc...) and will make the necessary changes to xf86config. Save the changes, restart x, and then try cntrlalt+/-. It should now work. Re: [newbie] Stupid questions
Thanks, I'll try that. I'm also about half the way done with downloading the version 7 CD image. I wonder if running that might not fix my problems with being unable to partition 36.5 gig hard drives. Steven P Hull wrote: Yes you can still read the HowTo. Re: [newbie] modem Help!
Wouldn't it have come with a drivers disk that maybe has the Linux drivers on it? (Don't listen to me, though, I still haven't gotten Linux loaded on a system yet).
