[newbie] Lnx4win

2000-01-16 Thread sean F

Hi all,
Have been trying to install lnx4win, from the new 7.0
release, tonight on another puter, I have been having
problems with actually getting to the graphical
install. I did see the graphical install but did not
have enough room so I uninstalled, and ended up back
to the RH 1.1 install where it fails at mounting
cdrom...I don't know what I did to get the
graphical as I have been trying to get it installed
for about 3Hrs now, or about 10-11 attempts, seems
that after the install.bat your move to the
"installed" lnx4win folder and run setup.bat, I thinks
at that point loadlin is supposed to take over but my
puter reboots.Any ideas?

I'll try to do that, I THINK I know how to find the archive. I know I don't
have this here since I only joined the list a few minutes before sending my

Attempting a first-time installation. The goal is to end up
with an Apache server providing FTP to the outside world and
internet access (proxy server??) and storage space to home
 machines.

What I bought was 2 36.5 gig Maxtor IDE drives which I'm
under the impression Linux will RAID together into one
redundant 36.5 gig space. These are the master slave on
the primary IDE (the only port that supports ATA66). On the
secondary port is a CDROM drive that can handle 4 disks as 4
separate drive letters and an LS120 superfloppy drive.

The first problem I ran into was the motherboard BIOS wasn't
new enough to handle 30 gig drives. That has been fixed
now. But Linux can't seem to figure out how to partition
those drives. It doesn't matter if I let the installation
program try Disk Druid or Fdisk, either way there is an
error message (not there long enough to read it, though).
It doesn't matter if LBA is on or off and it doesn't matter
if I boot from the floppy or the CD, the result is the same.

So I guess what I need to know is:
  1) Should LBA be enabled or not?
  2) Do I need a newer version of Linux?
  3) Could the problem be that I'm not using a REAL
 floppy drive?

Then you need to have more than one resolution listed xf86config file.
Try XF86Setup
It's totally graphical. It will allow you to choose several possible
resolutions (e.g., 640x480; 800x600; etc...) and will make the necessary
changes to xf86config.
Save the changes, restart x, and then try cntrlalt+/-. It should now
work.

[newbie] DHCPCD Problem

2000-01-16 Thread Matt Turner

I recently installed Mandrake 7 on a new machine and I am having trouble
getting a dynamic IP address from my ISP. I have had no trouble in the
past using Redhat and Slackware (with another ISP). My ISP gives me 2
dynamic IP's. I had 2 windows boxes running and now I have 1 windows box
and 1 linux box. I have tried using Pump and DHCPCD and when I run them
both I get a timeout saying no server responded. I have the NICs going
through a hub, so I know a good connection is made with the NICs. Does
anyone have any suggestions for me?

Could it be that my ISP is looking for the Mac address of NIC on the old
machine and won't assign an IP address to another card?

Thanks,
Matt

If you have a Mandrake cd, there should be a c/c++ compiler/headers/etc

For an IDE, try checking on freshmeat.net.

I would need some quick help so that I could go ahead with downloading
during this night.

I am using Mandrake 6.1 with Kernel 2.2.13 and want to download Mandrake
7.0 now.

several questions:

1) can I install the 7.0 version OVER my 6.1 version? Does everything
remains unchanged? All programs, configuration etc.?

2) I want to download using my Windows 98 (either with WS_FTP or with
Go!zilla). I already tried it, but got problems with the symbolik link
directories! HOW can I do that? WS_FTP broke up and told me that it could
NOT download the file (but it`s just a symbolic link, not?!)

3) I can download all in binary (with Auto enabled), YES?!

4) I can use Win98 to write everything to a CD, yes?!

I would appreciate a quick response, so that I could start tonight.. we are
talking about 500+ MB !! :-))

supposed to be in there? When I was using a dsl connection through a
network card the only info I input into the setup was the network info
and everything worked. Do I need to input something somewhere to get a
 dialup connection to work?
 Thanks John

Go to your /etc/resolv.conf
add:
search your isp
nameserver dns#
nameserver dns#

Your isp should provide you with two dns#'s.

Just add the above three lines with the appropriate info and you should be all
set ;o)

No players are currently "supported" but you can

Good luck.

Various BBS like the ones at linuxnewbie and

Re: [Re: [newbie] XF86 problem]

2000-01-16 Thread Muad'Dib

i tried this program, and yet it still will not display other resolutions.
i've also manually adjusted the XF86Config file to add them in.
no luck.
could it be something to do with switching ctrl/caps lock functions?
i haven't actually changed the defaults, but could that possibly be screwing anything
up?
and while i'm on this topic, is it possible to make the alt key do the work of the esc
key?
whenever i wish to jump to the beginning of a command line, i have to press esc.
alt would be much more convenient
thanks.

i can't get KDE to switch screen resolutions.
that means, that whereas most LINUX users upon hitting the

  cannot.
  that is the problem.
the small fonts, et alia, are the corollary.
i don't need this for an app. i just would like to be able to exercise my
right to switch screen resolutions should i so please. :)
  that's all.
 ===
It should now
 work.
