Try the multi-headed monster approach:
1 Surf the net for every Linux reference you can find, check it out.
2 Look up the closest LUG (linux user group) in your area, contact 'em.
3 Check with your local computer stores and local ISP's for linux contacts
4 Visit good bookstores like Barnes Nobles, Borders, or whoever is in
your area.
5 Suck up to some willing linux geek in your area, make him/her feel
wonderful, and call them when all else fails... If someone suggested
you try linux, I nominate them: they'll be susceptible to suggestions of guilt

[newbie] Problems With Linux4Win on a Laptop

2000-03-05 Thread Traci Collins

Linux4Win sounded like the perfect technology to use to play with
Linux on my laptop. The laptop uses the Chips and Technologies 6
video chipset and has an active matrix screen set to 800X600
resolution. I checked the Mandrake home page and the 6 is listed
as supported under Mandrake 7. I began the Linux4Win installation
process, I performed the pre-installation processes described in the
demo spotlight on the Mandrake home page but when the graphical
installer was supposed to start up it was impossible to see what was
said on my screen. I could see a ghost of a penguin near the top of
the screen but the bulk of the screen was completely black and
unreadable.

Does anyone know if there are any switches for Linux4Win that will
force it to give me a text based installation manager up until the
point that it lets me choose my X configuration with the CT6
controller? Obviously the simple graphics which should run on
anything don't run on my laptop.

Is there another way to approach the problem?

[newbie] someone sent virus attachment to this news

2000-03-05 Thread devilbutangel

I just realize someone sent the virus attachment to this news
see below...for more information..
source from www.mcafee.com .

Virus Profile

Virus Name
W32/Pretty.worm.unp

Date Added
2/17/00

Virus Characteristics
*March 2, 2000 Update: AVERT has received numerous samples of this Internet
worm. Many users reporting this worm are also users of Outlook Express. This
is the unpacked edition of the originally packed "W32/Pretty.worm" Internet
worm.*

This is an Internet worm that installs on Windows 9x/NT systems. It arrives
via email from affected users who have also run this Internet worm. It
appears as an icon of a character from the animated comedy series
"Southpark". Emails containing this Internet worm have this format:

-
Subject: C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe

Test: Pretty Park.exe :)
-

Attached is the file "Pretty park.exe" and in some cases "Pretty~1.exe".

This worm will try to email itself automatically every 30 minutes to all
email addresses listed in the Windows address book associated with Outlook
Express.

A second function of this worm is that it will also try to connect to an IRC
server and join a specific IRC channel. While connected, this worm tries to
stay connected by sending information to the IRC server, and will also
retrieve any commands from the IRC channel. While on the determined IRC
server, the author of this worm could use the connection as a remote access
trojan in order to get information such as the computer name, registered
owner, registered organization, system root path, and Dial Up Networking
username and passwords.

Users should download 4067 DAT set or above for detection and removal of
this Internet worm. To download the DAT files, follow this link .

Send This Virus Information To A Friend?

Indications Of Infection
Emails containing this Internet worm have this format:

-
Subject: C:\CoolProgs\Pretty Park.exe

Test: Pretty Park.exe :)

-

This program, when run will copy itself to FILES32.VXD in WINDOWS\SYSTEM
folder. It then modifies the registry key value "command" located in the
location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open

from "%1" %* to FILES32.VXD "%1" %*. This in essence will cause the
FILES32.VXD to run during the execution of any exe file.

See this related description of W32/Pretty.worm.

Method Of Infection
Direct execution of the file "Pretty Park.exe" will install to the local
system as mentioned above.

Removal Instructions
The order to remove this trojan is complicated by the depth to which the
trojan hooks the operating system. The following procedure should remove the
Trojan. With Windows 95/98, the registry can be loaded and edited using the
program named REGEDIT while in Windows NT, you use REGEDT32

1) Identify and note the files associated with this trojan as detected by
the scanner - do not remove the trojan at this time. If you have already
removed the trojan, you will not be able to run REGEDIT steps below on the
affected system. Proceed instead to step 11 listed below.

2) Open an MS-DOS prompt via the menu or click on START|RUN and type COMMAND
and then

3) At the prompt, type START COMMAND and press and then start Regedit in
Windows 95/98 by typing REGEDIT or in Windows NT type REGEDT32 and press

4) Remove references to the trojan from these keys of the registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\exefile\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command

They should contain only the value not including brackets ["%1" %*].

5) If applicable, remove any keys that run the main trojan under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\

And

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\

6) If applicable, delete the registry key if it exists

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dl

and exit Regedit

7) If applicable, edit WIN.INI and remove the reference to the trojan from
the run= line in the [windows] section.

8) If applicable, edit SYSTEM.INI and remove the reference to the trojan
from the shell= line in the [boot] section. It should just contain the file
EXPLORER.EXE.

9) Restart the system.

10) Delete the trojan program(s). If all is well the files should be deleted
OK. If you get an error message saying that windows is unable to delete the
file because it is in use, then you have made an error in the above
procedure. Repeat steps 1 to 9 and try again.

11) In the event that the trojan was deleted before making the registry
changes, it is still possible to repair the registry. You will need access
to another computer, or at a minimum, access to MS-DOS on the affected
system. Using MS-DOS edit, create a file called UNDO.REG with the following
content (you can cut and paste):

Re: [newbie] clock gaining several hours a day

2000-03-05 Thread Ronald J. Yacketta

setup nntpd (or xntpd)
all of the following is done as root
and then call /sbin/hwclock --systohc in a cron

my ntp.conf looks like this:
# These are EST time server! need to use a time server in your timezone
server 128.118.25.3
server 192.220.202.75
make sure that xntpd is set to start at boot use linuxconf, or just

cd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d
ln -s ../init.d/xntpd S70xntp
cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
ln -s ../init.d/xntpd s70xntp

now
type crontab -e
and add something like this
00,15,30,45 * * * * /sbin/hwclock --systohc

the above will set the bios clock to the linux clock ever 15 minutes.
this will also ensure that once you boot/start linux xntp will go out
and set
you linux clock to the current time.

Re: [newbie] Problems With Linux4Win on a Laptop

2000-03-05 Thread Traci Collins

The problem is that I loose the ability to see my screen before I
have the opportunity to pick the expert mode. Drakx goes graphical
before it lets you choose which of the modes you want. I need to be
able to tell the lnx4win installation not to go graphical until after
I have had that opportunity. It seems to be very prepackaged to work
exactly one way, which is good, but I am hoping that Mandrake left in
some switches to handle the exceptional cases. I can't find those
switches documented if they exist. I'm hoping that I just missed the
right document and that someone can point me toward it.

[newbie] make command recompiling kernel...

2000-03-05 Thread -- XE --

I have Yamaha YMF-724 PCI sound card. The only way to make that card
work in linux is using OSS driver from Open Sound System.
But i have a problem when I try to install that driver:

1. I have an error message during install about kernel incompatibility,
and refer to OSS documentation, I must recompiling my kernel and
enable "CONFIG_MODVERSIONS" using "make" command. But when I try to
type that command, linux said that make comand is not available. And I
was confuse too about how to enable CONFIG_MODVERSIONS in Mandrake.

2. Still from the OSS documentation, I must do the following step:
 rm /usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h
 rm. bla... bla... bla...
And I can't find the "/usr/src/linux" directory on my hardisk.

Is there someone can help me why "make" command and "usr/src/linux"
directory isn't available..??? or maybe I forget something in
installation procedure...??

Thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] Installation difficulties

2000-03-05 Thread Alan Shoemaker

RatsnakeBobit sounds like you installed lilo to the /boot
partition not the mbr. You need to boot into linux with yout
boot floppy that you made during the installation process. Then
you need to edit the first line of '/etc/lilo.conf' by removing
the number only, for instance change:

boot=/dev/hda1
to
boot=/dev/hda

now open a console as the root user and type:

/sbin/lilo

after this the system should boot by default into linux or you
can choose win98 by typing windows (or maybe dos, whatever label
is in lilo.conf) at the lilo 'boot:' prompt.

[newbie] resources for drivers and other info

2000-03-05 Thread Michael Fortin

Hello all,
I've had Mandrake running for about 4 days and I am slowly discovering
how powerful it is. For the most part I've been able to figure out most
things with help from some friends. But I have some remaining questions.

My sound card is a Yamaha and Mandrake doesn't recognize it. In Lothar
it's listed in a catagory called other. I've also tried to install a second
ethernet card, a Linksys nc100, and Lothar doesn't recognize it either. Is
there a good resource for drivers such as these or is there something else
that I should be doing?

An other problem that I'm having is installing software. So far I've come
across three different methods of installing, unpack it your self, install
scripts, and rpm packages. Is there a good tutorial on the net some where
for using zip and tar or any other info on installing programs?

And is there a good beginners resource for setting up and running apache?
For example I found the /usr/local/httpd/html folder, I asume that's where
apache will go for requests? Doe's it need it's own IP address (different
form the machine)? How do you set up other sites with there own IPs?

I've installed some apps while I was logged in as root. How do I get those
same apps to show up in the application menu or on the desktop when I'm
logged in as an other user?

Thanks,

[newbie] 3COM EtherLink 10/100 PCI TX (3C905B-TX) problems

2000-03-05 Thread Bryan Foster

Hello-

I have installed Mandrake-Linux 7.02 (AIR) and can not seem to get my NIC
card to work. When I tried to set up the networking stuff my card was not
listed. I tried with another and it didn't work. Finally I went to 3COMs web
site and downloaded the correct drivers for my card. (I wont even tell you
what I had to do to get it uncompressed.. needless to say I did manage to
get it uncompressed and the contents into a temp directory on my desktop).

Following the install instructions that came with the drivers I opened the
terminal as root, changed to the directory with the drivers and typed in the
following from the instructions:

# ./install3c90x

What I get is the following error:

'nknown option: `-
USAGE: csh [ -bcdefilmnqstvVxX ] [argument... ]

I have no idea what that means or what I am supposed to do to get these
drivers installed. Any ideas out there? I'd really like to get this card
working so that I can access the internet via my cable modem from Linux.
That would make learning this stuff a lot easier since I wouldn't need to
try something, write down whatever didn't work, log back into Windows, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

My MD "Helios" 2-2-13-7mdk, has sent me an E-mail saying "errors

file or directory"

what is a MYSQL log ? (it sounds painful).

I ran man mysql and it refers to some obscure data base?
I ran info mysql and it gives the identical cryptic explanation.

I ran tree /var | less It showed 248 directories and 269 files,
but the linux is still hungry for mysql?

They will not come out and say what exactly this log does, but
I am not using any networking , internet, or off site modem usage in
Linux. If this is pertinent to one of these unused systems I will
ignore it...
If it is the master list for some important brain activity I
want to correct it..

Will some one tell me the importance of the MYSQL log?

 Hello-

I have installed Mandrake-Linux 7.02 (AIR) and can not seem to get my NIC
card to work. When I tried to set up the networking stuff my card was not
listed. I tried with another and it didn't work. Finally I went to 3COMs
web
site and downloaded the correct drivers for my card. (I wont even tell you
what I had to do to get it uncompressed.. needless to say I did manage to
get it uncompressed and the contents into a temp directory on my desktop).

Following the install instructions that came with the drivers I opened the
terminal as root, changed to the directory with the drivers and typed in
the
 following from the instructions:

 # ./install3c90x

What I get is the following error:

 'nknown option: `-
 USAGE: csh [ -bcdefilmnqstvVxX ] [argument... ]

I have no idea what that means or what I am supposed to do to get these
drivers installed. Any ideas out there? I'd really like to get this card
working so that I can access the internet via my cable modem from Linux.
That would make learning this stuff a lot easier since I wouldn't need to
try something, write down whatever didn't work, log back into Windows,
etc.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
 Bryan

what chipset is it?
tulip? rtl8139? etc..
give us some specs from the card and we should beable to say hay or nay
on the use of the card. if it is a PnP card, see if you can turn the PnP
ability off and assign it a irq like 9 or 10

 Hello,
I just installed Mandrake Linux 6.0 (got it for $10 at a local
store). The installation and everything went fine, but I'm not sure
whether or not it supports my ethernet card. I have a Diamond HomePNA
card that came with my Compaq. Can I get this version to support my
 card? Thanks in advance.

Re: [newbie] Post install setup of NIC

2000-03-05 Thread Ronald J. Yacketta

1) try insmod /lib/mod*/2*/net/ne2000
if you dont get an error message then try
modprobe ne2000
you should see something like this
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:29:2E:AA:27
  BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
  RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
  Interrupt:10 Base address:0xb800

loLink encap:Local Loopback
  inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
  UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
  RX packets:38727 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:38727 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

if that all works you can take an easy route and use linuxconf to add
the mod for eth0
1) linuxconf
2) networking
3) Basic Host Information
4) hit the tab key until your in the Kernel Module field
4a) press ctrl-x
4b) select ne2000
5) if your useing dhcp select dhcp
6) Enabled
7) tab to accept (hit return)
8) tab to quit (hit return)
9) tab to quit (hit return)
10) Select Activate changes (hit return)
11) tab to quit (hit return)

now you can type ifconfig -a and now the above eth0 should look
something like:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:C5:F4:08:3A
  inet addr:24.161.66.121 Bcast:24.161.67.255
Mask:255.255.252.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
  RX packets:70757 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:51835 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
  collisions:931 txqueuelen:100
  Interrupt:9 Base address:0xb400
if the eth0 looks like the one after the insmod/modprobe above type
ifup eth0 and then ifconfig -a
