It is default in Gnome and KDE. At the bottom in the menu bar (KDE) there
are 4 desktops already setup. You can set how you want this to behave,
moving the mouse can already get you to it.

Hi Dave.
Well I'm quite new to all of this myself. It sounds as though you
may have forgotten your root password and therefore want to give
your user account SU privilages so as to select a new one. If this
is so I think you may struggle. Before any permissions can be given
you must first be in root which of course requires the password.
Maybe someone knows of a hack to get round this.
Good luck

[newbie] StarOffice & Mandrake7

2000-05-04 Thread GAPrichard

After 6 full installs, I now know what was corrupting my X. It was not
desktop configuration, hdparm, video setup (as generics), or any of the other
RPMs I loaded from Mandrake 7 Deluxe, (modem & sound not configured) --Star
Office so corrupted X that it froze Linux during boot, while trying to switch
over to graphical login. I had made many changes during the install, and
fully recreated everything (except for the one thing I was testing) when
reloading. During only one iteration was I able to get a (frozen) console
screen, which showed these messages: bad length in Geometry, output file
/var/tmp/server-0.xkm removed, couldn't load XKB keymap, Font Trans Socket
UNIX Connect: can't connect: errno-111, failed to set default font path
1unix/:-1, and fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'. The
Star Office RPM appeared to run and end normally.
Would a reinstall of X from the distribution CD have a good chance at
giving me a working Linux and Star Office? Am I better off to give this up
where I am (all the rest are working fine after the last reload)? Ideas?
Also, how does one go about repair on a corrupt file system? My first
boot after Star Office gave messages about repairing the file structure. I
realized I know nothing about repair, though I've heard that it is possible.
Thanks for your help. -Gary-

Hi everyone,

Trying to figure out something here.
I use Qmail to send mail, but when I am not online and 'queue' mail, it
can take upto 2 days before mail is sent out, no matter how long or often
I am online.

So I tried getting Serialmail to work. Followed the things to set up the
package, but to no avail. Mail is being sent to "local" and nothing
happens. Could there be something wrong with the Qmail setup that things
are so slow?

It sounds like you told Mandrake to start in graphic mode when it
boots. Since it was probably setup for a different graphics chipset (or
a different resolution), it just keeps trying to restart gdm. flash,
text, flash, text sounds about right for the problem.

You'll need to rerun Xsetup to reconfigure the graphics modes since your
home system doesn't support the chipset or mode you originally
configured.

At the lilo prompt, enter:

linux 3

this will boot the machine into runlevel 3 (instead of 5) which is
straight text mode. You'll be able to run Xsetup from here.

Interesting distribution, really. It worked well on one machine here,
but was absolutely horrible on the other. Now it's gone from both. It
was a freebie install anyway, it came with Corel Office 2k.

Re: [newbie] Install problems on older machines?!?!

2000-05-04 Thread Seglar Killen

After a week and a half i have found out why my computer stalled during
install:

i loose the IRQ to my GOLDSTAR 8X atapi cdrom. why is it lost i dont know.
When the packages start installing my cd just dies. I can eventually get it
to work again by manually switching the power off and back on on the cd
only, but i loose irq again after a few seconds.

So to all of you that has mandrake installed AND has done it on a GOLDSTAR
8X cdrom i wonder: How did you do it???

Thanx to all that tried to solve my problem :)

[newbie] Printer newbie help!

2000-05-04 Thread Andrew Edward McCall

Hi,

I am not so much a Linux newbie, but a printer
newbie!

I have a Epson Stylus Color 740 connected to my
parallel port, and I tried setting it up on installation, and couldnt get it
to print either of the example pages. Are there any issues I should be
aware of with this? Any advice?

I also have an Epson Kyocera FS-600 with a little
network box attached to my network. I have had it working great once under
RedHat 5.2 a long time ago, I kept the filters and scripts and used them in
Slackware for a while, but lost them a couple of months ago

Basically it works as a HP LaserJet 5P, but via an
IP address instead of the serial port. I don't have a clue how to set this up, I
also tried this on setup, but it kept asking for a remote print queue, and I am
not too sure if it even has one!

Any help at all welcome! Once I can print OK, I can
get rid of Windows once and for all!

Thanks

[newbie] Realtek driver and eth0 in general

2000-05-04 Thread dickon1

Hi guys

Sorry but i am a complete newbie both to Linux and to this newsgroup, so
if these questions are too stupid or if they have already been answered
before, please bare with me and accept my apologies (but still give me a
coherent answer, please)

My Mandrake Linux 7.0 works very satisfactory and i had no trouble
whatsoever installing and configuring it. But although the program
correctly identified my network card, the card does not seem to work and
eth0 fails during the booting process. i tried to download the driver from
the Realtek site. Got two files - realtek_cb.o and rtl8139.c

Tried to 'insmod' the realtek_cb.o file, but got a message that this file
was compiled for an older version of the kernel and the module would not
install even when i tried the -f switch. Now what should i do with the
rtl8139.c file? How can i install it as the driver?

If and when the card finally works, i have another question - The main
computer (not the Linux one) works under Windows98 and is connected to the
Linux computer via the Microsoft network client. i realize that i'll have
to use SAMBA, but my question concerned a much earlier stage - In that
Microsoft network, the main computer has the IP of 169.254.35.242 while the
Linux computer (which also works under Windows98) is assigned the IP of
192.168.0.210. Linux seems to regard those two IP as belonging to two
different network systems. How can i reconcile it? (a guy from the PC Plus
sent me a wonderful configuration which worked fine on his machine but was
spat out by my Linux in utter disgust)

Yours, Dick

Re: [newbie] CD's + burner for audio

2000-05-04 Thread Rial Juan

ok, lame as it sounds: read the CD-Burning HOWTO, it explains everything you'll
need.

Short version: cdrecord (yes, the command-line tool to which X-CDroast is just a
frontend) accepts .wav files as input for audio-CD's too. It's also covered in
the cdrecord manpage.

I haven't tried burning audio CD's with X-CDroast yet, but are you sure it
doesn't accept .wav files as input? If not, perhaps you might want to give
krabber a try, I haven't tried that one either, but I've seen it has input
filters for .wav, .mp3 etc...

So you have the choice: do it the hard way with console cdrecord, or try and
figure out how the hell krabber works (coz it's a weird app, that one)...

A full install need about 1.3G !!
All depends of your mount points.
What I did: (had the same problem)
/ (about 600-800M)
/usr(big one most of all, my case 3G)
/boot (32M, enough to put more diff. kernels)
/usr/local (about 600M, to preserve own data)
/home (depends of the nbr of users)
On my 2° HD reside:
There is 1 prim. partition = /
and 1 extended = /usr, /usr/local, /home
On my 1° HD :
1 prim. for windoooz
1 prim. for /boot (set it always as prim.)
1 swap about 256M

[newbie] Two Questions

2000-05-04 Thread Monty Malik

Hi all,

Just a few questions. But first my configuration.

I am running Mandrake 7.02 on a PII 400 with 128M Ram, using
enlightenment as a windows manager.

Now down to the questions:

Samba Problems:

I am trying to consistently connect to a directory on a win98
machine. I can connect fine and can access the files without any
problems. However, if I keep both computers idle for about a day, I
lose my samba connection. For some reason I get disconected. I can
remount the samba share, without any problems and it works fine, but
will eventually disconnect itself. Any ideas what may be going on?

TCP/IP performance:

I have a cable connection which is attached to an OpenBSD box, which
serves the net to my other computers. When I am downloading a large file
on my linux machine, my mouse becomes extremely jumpy and difficult to
move around. This only occurs when downloading files larger than 5megs
at a speed greater than 65kbps. Any one know why what causing this, and
any ideas on what I can do to prevent this from occuring.

That's about it.

Thanks is advance for the help

Monty

RE: [newbie] GCC is missing....grrrr

2000-05-04 Thread David Ramsey

I have sort of the same issue. I did access the RPM files and reinstall it.
They put the compiler in the /usr/ area. You will see a subdir for i586,
i486, and i386. My problem, even after installing the RPM files, I still
get the "gcc c complier can not make executable." error message. Even after
manually putting these directory structurs in the LD_LIBARY_PATH and PATH
environment. At least now it is not giving me "can not locate crt1.0"
error. Now it is erroring out on a include file, which has nothing in it. I
am told if you do not select the "developer" option when installing Linux,
then the system is not setup correctly to compile. That does not make much
sence, but figure I will spend about 4 hours tonight proving that theory.
Hope that helps some.

[expert] Sound Blaster Help!

Well I finally sprang for a new audio card, a brand new
Sound Blaster PCI 512. This must be new one as it was
the only affordable PCI Sound Blaster card Staples had.
So I did all the research on available drivers for Linux
and found same at ALSA so attempting my first source code
compile I got it to make the object code module and installed
it per "readme" instructions. My CD plays music fine but I
can't get any of the system sounds to play. I've been through
all the mixers and such in both KDE and GNOME with no success.
Any help would be most appreciated! After working with this for
2 days I think I've tried all the combinations possible.

ok i got a little consused between the different versions of mandrake out

looking at the web site i can only find thease two differences,

gold pack (2000) has phone support, powerpack only has email support(i
think)
buying the gold pack will give you a free update to the latest version of
mandrake. powerpack will not or at least it dosn't clame to.
there are also 2 versions of mandrake that have been boxed up and

[newbie] Help...Laptop XServer Problems

2000-05-04 Thread Br. Karekin Madteos Yarian, BSG

Any help???

I have recently installed Mandrake 7.0 on my HP Pavilion N3215 laptop. I
can't get X to work at a resolution higher than 640x480.

Mandrake automatically installed the XFree86_FBDev server which is more than
RedHat 6.2 did. No matter what I try...and I have follwed the advice of two
people on the Linux laptop pages (two different and unworkable solutions to
boot) and to no avail.

Here are my card and monitor specs.

Card: Trident CyberBlade 3D 17 AGP with 4096 RAM (stolen from physical RAM)

Monitor (per HP): HPA 12.1" SVGA Passive Matrix
VertRefresh: 75 Mhz
Horiz Sync: 85 Mhx

I have tried and failed at any number of combinations with Xdrakres.

Xconfigurator has let me manually input all the above info and still can't
find a workable resolution. All I want is 800x600. In spite of the fact that
my monitor supports 1280x768 while in Windoze.

The BIOS allows me to allocate Auto, 4Mb or 8Mb to Video RAM.

Any suggestions?? I'm about desperate. I wanted to get Linux running on the
box so I could travel and learn with it.

Karekin

Re: [newbie] Can someone answer me these questions three

2000-05-04 Thread Don W. Jenkins

You don't have to touch hda with your Windows 98 on it. You will be asked
to create Linux partitions, which you must be sure you are doing on your
second drive, hdb, or whatever it turns out to be. Be sure that when you
do your partitioning and formatting that you are working with the space on
hdb and not hda. The only thing that your installation procedure will do
that may involve your Windows partition is when you get to the part about
installing lilo, the boot loader. You will get the opportunity to chose
whether to install it in the MBR on the Windows partition, or on the first
partition (/boot) on your Linux drive. If you don't mind having Lilo
manage booting up for both Windows and Linux, you can chose the first way.
Or if you don't mind booting from a floppy all the time, you can chose the
second way. A third way, which I use is to have a separate boot manager,
Boot Magic in my case, that manages both systems and gives you the
opportunity to chose either at boot up. But Lilo does this, too. Other
than Lilo, don't do anything to your Windows disc at all.

First of all, thanks to everybody who answered my last questiom wich

Now, I have another question:
Linux is able to read files from a FAT32 partition? If not, what can I
do to share those files between two different HDs?

Re: [newbie] console log-in logo

You can either take the entire logo off or joust leave the
info on the kernel

to do this you must edit your "/etc/issue" file

search for the part where it say linuxlogo (or is it linux_logo? cant quite
remember) and change the options

fore the options you can check the man page on linuxlogo

hi john,

i recognise DOS_hda1 as being the name of both the kdelnk file on your
kde desktop as a shortcut to this drive and also the name of the mount
point where this drive is mounted.

right click on the desktop icon for DOS_hda1 and choose 'properties',
you should get a box with three tabs, the first will have a white box
wiht the name of the file in, simply type in a new name, keep the
extension the same,
to change the name of the mount point, click on Draksconf on the
desktop, choose the linuxconf button, choose access filesystems, choose
local filesystems, click on the entry for /dev/hda1 and edit as
appropriate then accept your way out,

i'm afraid i don't know the answer to the second part of your question

[newbie] CD Rom not accessible

2000-05-04 Thread Jim Brown

I'm having trouble accessing my CDRom for Music and data.
When I click on the CDRom Icon with a windows or linux
(mandrake install disk) cd, I can't see any data. When I get
into the kscd program, it can't find a disk. When I go to
lothar it finds my cd (model: CRW6206A, device:/dev/hdd
bustype: atapi/ide). When I go back to kscd and try to set
/dev/hdd in the cdrom device it still doesn't see it. When I go
to drakeconf and then click filesystems and local drive, I
can set the cdrom to /dev/hdd, but that doesn't help either.
I guess I'm a newbie. Please help.

[newbie] Problems during installation of Mandrake

2000-05-04 Thread Luc VANCAUWENBERGHE

Hello,

I installed linux Mandrake before on my computer, but now it is going the wrong way.
Last week I installed a new hard disk on my computer (IBM HD 13,5 GB). Because of BIOS
problems I was forced to install EZ-bios on my computer. (My PII 266 doesn't seem to
support these large disks).

My primary master is a WD 6.4 GB disk and is containing my windows operating system.
The new disk of 13,5 GB is split up in two partions, one of 4GB and one of 9.5GB. I
tryied to install Mandrake on the 4 GB parition. The installation is no problem. All
files are copied to the disk. (I used the "customized" mode and selected
"development").

After the complete installation the problem start. After the reboot my system is
hanging during the boot. The lines of EZ-bios appear on the screen, but then the
system hangs. This, I guess, gecause of the fact that LILO has corrupted the EZ-bios
in the MBR. (I set LILO to HDA MBR).

Can you give me some hints how to install Mandrake on my computer using the EZ bios,
because I need this to get access to the full disk capacity under windows.

I installed Mandrake before on the same computer without any problems, but then
EZ-bios was not installed.

Thanks

Re: [newbie] What's the difference between Mandrake 7.0 Powerpackand Mandrake 7.0 Deluxe???

2000-05-04 Thread Andrew Edward McCall

Hi again,

> How is the PowerPack or Deluxe Mandrake 7.0 behaving? What are your
> thoughts?

Rock solid. This is the first time I decided to install an "easy" Linux
distro, I normally use Slackware, but I decided that I really need the RPM
support.

The only problem I had is that it messed up my partition table, I have 4Gb
Extended partition containing all my Linux partitions as /dev/hda1 -
containing, /dev/hda5,6,7, and 8 for Linux, then 10Gb for Windows on
/dev/hda2, then 2Gb for BeOS on /dev/hda3. For some reason if I just had
/dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3 on my hard disk, with the spare space where the
extended partiton would be, the installer overlapped the extended partition
and my Be partition, rendering both Be and Linux unbootable. I just deleted
the extended partition and it restored my Be partiton, then I created the
extended partition manually with a Slack boot disk, and did a autoallocate
inside that, and it all worked.

Probably too much info there but, hey you asked!

Thanks

I know the XCDRoast - but does anybody know a program that can
convert/burn wav-files to an audio-CD. I know how to make a copy of an
music-CD but I am trying to make CD's out of my LP-collection.

[newbie] No sound for Desktop!

2000-05-04 Thread root

I have installed Mandrake 7.0 as a dual boot with Windows 98. The only
problem I am having is that I get sound ok for my cds but I cannot get
any sounds for my desktop! I am using a sound card that I got with my
Packard Bell Platinum 4400.

Neither does mine. The cdrom works and the cd player interface appears, even
recognising the number of tracks and their time lengths but I get no sound.
Strange as my system sound works perfectly.

(maybe it just doesn't like Bob Dylan)

[newbie] how to put GLIB in path so it can be found ?

2000-05-04 Thread duncan

I am trying to install sane and after I have ./configure of glib1.2.6 and make
and make install I get difficulties with gtk+1.2.6 not able to find glib 1.2.6.

ie
checking for glib-config... no
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.4... no
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.
configure: error:

How do I indicate where glib has gone or make sure that gtk can find what it
needs?

I cant find where GLIB_CONFIG environment variable is or where glib config
script is .

PLease can anyone help .

the motherboard com2 in the system bios?

Yes. First - and most important - as root edit your /etc/fstab file, find the
'name' and write whatever you like. Next in / create a directory of the same
name. Then right click the icon on your desktop, and change to the new name. I
don't know if there should be any other places where the name must be changed,
but if .. you'l find out.
Of cource you have to remount the drive on the new adress (easyist way is to
boot)
