[newbie] Strange Behavior

2000-10-09 Thread Daniel J. Ferris

Here is a weird one.

I have LM 7.1. Today I went to check my e-mail, and turned on
the monitor. Unfortunatly, the screen was blank. No kdm. Very
strange. So I hit alt-f2 and no virtual terminal. No virtual
terminals when I hit alt-f1, or alt-f3-f6.

I couldn't log in via ssh either. I didn't telnet to my sendmail
to see if that was still responding. But the computer was turned
on and the damn thing was completely dead, and I had to do a
reboot with the reset switch. G. This is the first time
that Linux has ever acted like Windows 98.

Any ideas? I suppose that I may have been DoSed, but kind of
doubt it, since I've never had problems before. Could this be
indicitive of a hardware problem?? Just curious is all.

I have the same card. Make sure you have ISDN4Linux installed. Then go to

You need to export the permissions.
In /etc/exports I have this on machine "Internet":

/ p350.merlijn(rw,no_root_squash) p350(rw,no_root_squash)

Means that all directories below root ( / ) are presented as accessible to
the machine called p350.merlijn with permissions ReadWrite (rw), no need
to be root (no_root_squash), and the same thing for the system called
p350.

On P350 I then

mount Internet:/ /mnt/Inet

(machine to access, dir to access it through).

Reverse this info on the other machine(s) and you have 2 way traffic.

[newbie] kwintv

2000-10-09 Thread falcaraz

Dear Ronald,

¡Yeah! I can watch tv now with kwintv, xawtv and, of course, cabletv.
The problems was as easy as to change the card option in the bttv; it
was not the card=6 but card=13; unfortunately the good running of
cabletv confused me, but reading, following your advise I went again to
the bttv mini-howto and..

I believed that the bttv module runing on Mandrake 7.1 was the 0.6, but
the options seems to be that of 0.7. I selected the Avermedia card type
(car=6), but in the new module the card options is more specific and the
mine (Avermedia Capture 98) correspond to card=13 and ¡hale ophh! now
all the tv applications are running.

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: [newbie] Two systems....

2000-10-09 Thread Greg Stewart

OK, I'm going to assume you set both linux boxes up the same way, probably
using the default services. You might want to check to see that pump is
running (in terminal, type: top "pump" should be listed, or dhcpcd if you
chose to install that instead).

In the configuration, have you given the workstation a name with a
convention different from the one that does lease an IP from the router?

If you take the 1st linux box off the LAN, and try to put the "4th" one in
it's place (the one that can't get an IP)... does this machine get the
lease? Or is it still dead?

Have you tried using linuxconf to configure the NIC on the "4th" linux box?
If not, try going to Basic Host Configuration, and selecting eth0 on that
machine... leave everything blank--even the host name--and just select
activate at boot, and DHCP.

If all else seems fine, here's an embarrassing move that must get me at
least once a month--check the cable to see that you haven't put one in with
a short or a break in it. I really can't count how many times I've installed
a workstation and fuss around for an hour or so thinking I've made a
configuration error, and it's the damned cable.

Let me know what happens...

RE: [newbie] Can't Configure eth0

Tom,

I used the dhcp-client-3.0bl1pl12-4mdk.i586.rpm and it worked just fine. I
had read the DHCP how-to and the writer said he had sometimes had problems
with pump so he used the dhcp-client instead. So therefore I did also.

If you are using v7.1 this package is located on your Instalation Disk 1 in
the /Mandrake/RPMS directory.

(rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/dchp-client-3.0b1pl12-4mdk.i586.rpm)

I am unable to configure my nic in order to connect to the internet via DSL

Using linuxconf, I set the interface to use DHCP, and the kernal module to

configure the interface would be appreciated.

Re: [newbie] install hangs with 7.1.

2000-10-09 Thread Rod Baxter

Gary,
I bought the package (Linux Mandrake 7.1 complete)from the local software
shop and the bios virus is disabled. Since posting this email I have
elimated a few things. I had the motherboard with only the video card
installed, and as its a PCI s3 it should not be the cause of the problem.
The motherboard does use the Via Apollo chipset, and the hang will occurr
anytime linux probes the PCI bus. I ran through the expert install, and
anytime I answer yes to probling the PCI bus it dies.
I tried reseting my motherboard to defaults, still no different. I also
tried a 5GB drive which is only udma33, but still the same problem. I also
tried another motherboard, a 233MMX and it hangs as well. The only item I
havn't changed is the video card, which I will do, but as Red Hat works
fine, I don't expect it to be the video.

I am fairly new to linux, however I know PC's fairly well incidentally.

I have a cable modem with a Linksys router behind it feeding 3 systems. The
4th was going to be another Linux box. The router does DHCP with internal
addressing.

Upon install the 3C509 cards were installed. I just had to select 3C509 on
the Kernel mode field. I got an address subsequent to that point, so the
system was in working order. I have more than enough addresses to hand out.

I couldn't get the second system to get an address while the first one was
running.
The card wouldn't initialize on boot because it couldn't get an address.

If I put another Windows system in its place I can get a 4th IP.

Thanks

> When I run make it keep telling me that it cannot find"Xm.h"..in

All files ending in .h are "include" files and you (or your make) won't
find them in a lib directory, they'll be in an include directory. As far
as I know, all the X include files are in /usr/X11R6/include/X11. Don't
know about Xm.h though. There's an X.h. In short, I think your makefile
is confused. If you know enough about makefiles you might be able to fix
it but if you're just compiling "cuz" then I suspect you'd be better off
grabbing some different editor source/makefile code.

You misunderstood. I'm not taking sides for the IRA or for any thing UK
related...

Its that I don't think that messages about little girls being blown up with
bombs has any place on this mailing list... ;-)

We had a thread a couple of weeks about about 2nd amendment rights in America,
specifically the right to "keep and bear arms" which I fully believe in, but as
well, I have to agree with the majority of users on this mailing list, that it
did not really have a place here...

Understand?

Catch ya later...

Shah, Steve. Linux Administration, A Beginner's Guide: Osbourne/McGraw Hill.
Berkley, Calif. 2000.

By no means "A Beginner's Guide", but well written, easy to understand, and
very comprehensive. The networking section is at the end of the book, but
everything in the text is useful.

Re: [newbie] HP Jetdirect printing

2000-10-09 Thread Chris Slater-Walker

Try using the IP address of the printer for the
host name, and a queue name of "raw" (no quotes). I have an HP LJ4M Plus with
internal JetDirect card and it works fine for me. Note that the version of
printtool supplied with 7.0 and 7.1 doesn't seem to work. Others have
experienced this. If you can get hold of the printtool RPM from Red Hat 6.1 or
6.2 and install it, you should be fine.

I think he means "driver" -- in linux conf, select the device driver for the

Re: [newbie] Firewall

I'll look at that, but I had found Seattle Firewall before that, so I'm installing
that 1st. I've got the Seattle Firewall up and running and it seems to be doing the
trick. I'm just not sure if I can do my adddress translation. I've got several PC's
that we use for supporting software. We use Carbon Copy for this support. I need to
open these PC's to the internet using a specified port. I need to be able to assign
the internet IP's for these machines to their internal IP's, and choose which ports to
allow through the firewall.

[newbie] no innd PID

2000-10-09 Thread Francois Massonneau

Hi,
I wanted to set up a newsgroup server. I updated the
/etc/news/inn.conf file with my own infos, I changed the
/etc/news/nnrp.access file to allow access to the newsgroups to my
intranet. BUt when I try to add new newsgroup, using ctlinnd, this is
the resulting output :
[root@francois log]# ctlinnd newgroup celtes.alt.noirmoutier y
No innd.pid file; did server die?
Can't send "newgroup" command (sendto failure) No such file or directory.

I know innd is started, but even if I stop it, and restart it, I have
the same error message as above.
[root@francois fm]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/innd stop
[root@francois fm]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/innd start
Starting INND system: [ OK ]
[root@francois fm]# ctlinnd newgroup celtes.alt.noirmoutier y
No innd.pid file; did server die?

How can I do to make it work ?

I have same card. heres what I did
boot into dos, set up your card into NE2000 mode, set IRQ and IO to safe values
(boot into dos and use the installation disk to do this) then use the NE2000
driver under linux, its in documentation
file:/usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking/net-modules.txt
its standard ne200 driver (called ne)
to get it working type

modprobe ne io=0x220 irq=10
obviously replacing proper settings for ya card

To automise installation of driver at boot time ad
add this command to end of file /etc/rc.d/rc.local
modprobe ne io=0x220 irq=10

[newbie] DSL Configuration

2000-10-09 Thread Paul Figura

Dear Macmillian/Mandrake Support,

I have DSL High speed Internet access, but am having some trouble
getting it configured for my linux Machine. I'm having quite a few
hurdles to pass. First of all, My Network card does not want to detect.
I tried using ifconfig, and it does not show up, although it detects in
harddrake (Where it gives it the wrong driver)
I think that's my main problem. I downloaded the drivers neccessary for
linux to log into the network, although they are a little rudimentary.
In case you need the information, my network card is a "D-Link DE-528CT
(32-bit PCI Adaptor)"
I hope you can help me out. I'm not necessarily new to linux, I've
played around with REdhat 5.2, but I'm definatley not an expert!
Thank your for your time,

Sincerely,
Paul Figura

I sure gave this guy the wrong answer :-) Didn't understand (my fault not
his) what he was asking until I read your answer. Of course you're
right.

I learned something the hard way, though. Always let these
user-install programs initiate a new set of files before you put your
old ones in place. If you don't, they often don't install what's needed
for them to function properly as they "think" the user is already
installed since there is a set of config files present. I just got stung
by this and while it was no big deal, Pine wouldn't work for me until I
simply removed my existing .pinerc file (actually I just renamed it), ran
pine so it could do its thing (and I have yet to figure out what that
"thing" is) and then I copied my .pinerc over the one it had just
made. This made the difference between me being able to send mail or not.

Cheers --- Larry

[newbie] Firewall

2000-10-09 Thread Jon Greisz

I bought Mandrake 7.1 and installed it this weekend.  I'm
trying to setup a firewall between my network and the internet.

I've got the following:

  Server with Mandrake 7.1
NIC - configured for internal network
NIC - configured for internet, connected to our
T1

I've used 192.168.1.0/24 as my internal subnets.  I've
got 64 external IP's.  I need to allow access to several of my client
machines on the internal network using a specific port from the internet.
All of my clients need access to the internet.

What is the easiest way to get a firewall going.

Thanks,

Here is one for ya. i came in this morning to a sudo meltdown. On a
mandrake 7.1 system my apache error_log filled the root file system up.
Normally all I do is delete the error log and go on about my day. It is a
development server so i don't worry about errors in the apache logs.(maybe
now i will) When i did this this morning it went crazy.

Today i get a

[root@marvin /]# touch /anyfile

in my boot messages. but when i do a

/dev/sdb5 2656388 2257472263976 90% /usr

all partitions other than / are just fine
the boot messages show it mounted in read/write mode.

I believe that you start up linuxconfig and then hit the

Hello Michael,

The 3c905 card was released just after around the time of 7.0.
I am using 3c905c NIC and changed the following line in etc/conf.modules
from alias eth0 3c90x
to
alias eth0 3c59x
Resave the changes. This will get you up and running.

Reboot your computer. Try typing in: http://127.0.0.1:1

Jeff, as I've heard repeated on here so many times, and I've found it to be
very true:

"the only stupid question is one that is left unasked"

Or something like that!

Anyways, yes, you do have to have a TV-Tuner card. I use the Hauppage WinTV
model 401. I picked it up from BestBuy for $83. (other cards/brands do work,
however, you might want to check out the support list for specific models.
Basically-stick with Brooktree chips/Hauppage, etc, and avoid ATI) With this
card, I get cable TV and FM stereo radio. Its kind of a geek thing, as any
TV
kills it in size, and the radio won't pick up nearly as many stations as a
home
stereo, but it is just that "cool" factor... ;-

See ya later!

> Please don't mistake what I say with official announcements. One is sure

You seemed rather clear Denis and what you were clear about related to
a Mandrake philosophy about what's important. You suggested, quite
clearly, that releasing 7.2 before the end of the year was clearly winning
over the idea of releasing a bug-free edition. Whether you believed that,
whether you should have said that and/or whether it's true is quite a
separate matter but I don't think anyone "mistake"'d anything you said.

That said, I appreciate Mandrake's interest in actual communication with
the users; it's very refreshing.

This is great. Hopefully it's more stable than 7.2beta.

I think you said that clearly. But you also said they were going to be
"forced" to do that. The only "forcing" I see is a marketing decision in
much the way that Microsoft has been "forced" to release bugged versions
of their software. While it's worked for them, I don't see how it's a
viable strategy for someone selling an operating system where its biggest
marketing liability is that their potential customer base is uneasy about
switching operating systems.

Sounds like a plan. It was you that was talking about releasing betas and
making patch disks available shortly thereafter.

Again, thanks for talking. You guys are doing a great job; I'd just like

On boot are you getting errors saying your card didn't initialize? If you
didn't, can you ping the card? If you have more than one system on a LAN
can you ping another system?

Go into your Basic network settings for the adapter and make sure you have a
card type selected for the kernel towards the bottom. If you can ping as
needed, put your machine name and DNS entries in as well. If your card is
working that should help.

I would just like to know why you agree the IRA. I live in the UK,
and I can tell you that in Northern Ireland, the majority of people
want to stay part of the UK. There is only a small part of the
society that are casing trobule for every one else. Does it realy
matter what country you are part of. No. The only reason that they
contuine to blow each other up and shot people is because thier
belives are so ingained, there hatered is so ingrained that none of
them what to stop. I think that by now the UK goverment should
have washed our hands of them but we don't. Why, because that
would not be a responsable thing to do. Also if we did that, the rest
