[newbie] IDE CD-R not recognised on installation

2000-11-15 Thread Niklas Ramsberg

In the Mandrake 7.2 documentation, it says that any IDE CD-R drives
present will be recognised on installation, but that did not work on my
system.

I ave both Linux and Win98 installed on my IBM Aptiva 2138-E83 (PII
300 MHz). My CD-R is a Mitsumi CR-2801TE set as master on IDE
bus 2. The CR-2801 is listed as supported hardware on the
hardware page at www.linux-mandrake.com. Is there a difference
between the plain CR-2801 and the TE drives?

I'm not into recompiling the kernel and such, so I'd be grateful for an
easy solution ;)

Re: [newbie] CUPS and printpro in 7.2

2000-11-15 Thread Till Kamppeter

printpro is ESP Print Pro, a commercial extension of CUPS which also
contains CUPS itself. It provides many printer drivers and graphical
frontends for administration and printing. As I know, the version coming
with Linux Mandrake is a demo which expires after one or three mounths.
In reality, you do not need ESP Print Pro with Linux Mandrake 7.2. There
are many free frontends: kups, xpp, qtcups, printerdrake, web interface
(You find them all in the menues under "Configuration"/"Printing" and
under "Applications"/"Publishing"). There are also lots of free drivers
and most of them lead to a better printing quality than the drivers of
ESP Print Pro (especially the GIMP-Print drivers). You do not gain
support of extra printers with ESP Print Pro, for Lexmark winprinters
the support by free drivers in Linux Mandrake is even better. Also for
PostScript printers you do not need ESP Print Pro, use the PPD file
delivered with the printer.

To install the CUPS updates you have to deinstall the printpro package
with "urpme printpro".

You shouldn't. Let me try to explain, at least from my view, why
you shouldn't. First I should mention that I first began runnin KDE2
(1.94) with 7.2b3, then d/l'd various upgrades till I got to 2.00, now
I'm testing KDE2.+ on 7.2+Out of all of 'em, KDE2 1.99 as I
understand was shipped with MacMillan 'complete', was the best, least
bugs. It's also my understanding that 'Power Pack' does have KDE
2.00. I prefer to buy cheap CD's, and send a direct donation to
MandrakeSoft than to support MacMillan.

   but i digress...

Mandrake is Mandrake because it's the one distro that pushes the
envelope. It was the first to deliver KDE2 (and 1.99 is a good level
of KDE2). Other major distro's are just now, or not quite yet even
making downloadable upgrades to KDE2 available, much less in new distro
versions (ie, CD's). I believe if you'll subscribe to the KDE-users
list, you'll find that there's Red Hat and SuSe users crawlin all over
each other about how to get the damn KDE2 'upgrades' they d/l'd to even
work. Lot'sa Sig 11's, everythings broken. All the other major distro
users are moanin that there favorite hasn't even made KDE2 available
for d/l. Most of them are tryin to compile it from KDE.org source and
they're even worse off. It's the same story on the newsgroups. It's
like Chinese arithmetic in a kindergarten out there. To their credit,
Mandrake users aren't rubbin it in that the Mandrake boys busted their

KDE 2 is final on download and ALL PowerPacks. KDE 2.0 is a pre on
"Complete" editions that were distributed to MacMillan for some large stores
who needed to send something to their members to put on the shelves before
Christmas (and it hit the shelves the same day as the announce of the 7.2
release for a week later). Later 7.2's Complete and ALL DL and Powerpack
7.2's are KDE 2.0 final. Current Complete, PowerPack, and Download are
singing from the same sheet of music.

is also in the nature of an official announcement, and the link there
describes the limits of scope for the KDE - 1.99 release. Inevitably, more
than KDE 2.0 happened before the final released, but all current distro
packages are now in sync, with the exception of the fact that some include
more packages than others.

Quit putting things after '--' at the beginning of a line. Many mailers read
that as the end or the signature.

In 7.0 do not delete /tmp files while X is running or you will have a dead X,
and it will not start on reboot.

In other distros, like 7.1 and 7.2, you have the option to have the system
clean /tmp on reboot, and it is safe to delete the files within /tmp most of
the time.

You should NOT delete the folder, not even in an air raid. Many programs
assume it is there, just as they assume the existence of /usr, /var, /etc,
/bin, /sbin, /lib, none of which may be deleted if you care to have a running

Dear Sir,
Dear Madam,

The European Commission is currently researching the economic impact of
software patents. For quite obvious reasons, many patent attorneys and
IP lawyers who earn money through the patent system are currently
lobbying
the European Commission in favor of a broad extension of the patent
system
to software, business methods, intellectual methods, etc.

Unless you express your own opinion, only their opinion will be taken
into
account in the decision process, whatever the consequences on your
business,
whatever the consequences on innovation.

It is therefore very important and urgent, if you consider software
patents
to be more harmful than useful, to send your opinion by email to:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

as soon as possible and, in any case, before December 15th, 2000. You
can write in the official language of any member country of the European
Union.

Your email will then be forwarded to the European Commission and
published on
the EuroLinux Web in order to make sure that your point of view is taken
into
consideration:

 http://petition.eurolinux.org/consultation

There is currently a consensus among economists on the fact that
software
patents tend to stifle innovation and harm small and medium enterprises
because they create tremendous juridical uncertainty which only benefits
to
patent attorneys and lawyers. There is also a consensus among patent
attorneys on the fact that patents on business methods are just a kind
of
software patents and that it is impossible to ban business method
patents
once software patents become legal.

Please write serious (but not necessarily long) emails, with a
consistent
analysis based on economics, technology or real world examples from your
everyday practice. Here are a few advice for your email to reach maximal
impact
within the European Commission:

1- NO POLITICS - Do not include in your emails any political analysis.
Otherwise, certain civil servants at the European Commission will
pretend that
you are politically biased and claim that your arguments are irrelevant.

2- FREE MARKET RHETORICS - Use rhetorics based on free market,
competition, innovation, entrepreneurship, SMEs and property, just as if
you
were the chief of the federation of enterprises in your country.
EuroLinux has
experienced that "free market economy" is currently the only common
language
which most civil servants at the European Commission understand. In
order to
let them understand your point of view and take it into account, it is
compulsory to speak their language. Arguments based on epistemology,
ethics or
history are acceptable but have in general no positive impact on the
European
Commission because only few people will understand them.

3- DAVOS COMPATIBLE - Imagine that you are introducing your point of
view at the Davos Economic Forum in front of CEOs who will only listen
to you
if your arguments mean more profits to them. Incidentally, many
Commissioners
at the European Commission used to be members of the steering committee
of the
Davos Economic Forum.

4- CONSENSUS AMONG ECONOMISTS - Always mention that there is a
consensus among economists on the fact that software patents harm
innovation.

Please understand that our advice does not represent any political point
of
view of the EuroLinux Alliance and is strictly designed at helping you
to
present your arguments in such way that they are going to be taken into
account by the European Commission.

For more information on software patents, please read our knowledge
database and follow the links:

First of all, put the CD in the drive and set to boot from it and hit f1 as

If you want to use Tomsrtbt, you must go to Tom's site and download a newer

New improvement include skins/themes, integrated AIM (yes, there is now an
official AIM client for Linux), "My Sidebar" (some people actually do
like it amazingly enough), best web standards support of any browser,
fairly
customizable, and a ton of new improvements over Netscape 4.x.

It's a lot faster than the last beta I downloaded, and it seems stable.
The
only major problem that I've had with it is that it crashes when I try to

But
other than that, I've been impressed by it, and it's a TON better than

[newbie] KWord fonts disappear! (Mandrake 7.2 KDE 2.0)

2000-11-15 Thread Robert Maynord

Dear Mandrake Folks:

I recently installed KWord/Office (Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.0). All works
fine - except for one problem with KWord. The fonts all show up in the font
list, but only one font will display on the screen, or print : times 12.
Previously I was using a beta version of KDE on the same machines, with no
problem.

I installed the same Mandrake 7.2/KDE 2.0 on three machines:

1) P200 with 64 Ram, 4 Gig HD
2) P133 with 32 Ram, 1.5 HD
3) P300 with 64 Ram, 4 Gig HD

Luckily, I got the P300 to work with KWord. The fonts "winked" out for a
moment, and KWord crashed, but I re-booted and then it worked! The other two
machines still display only one screen font.

Any idea how to get the fonts to display/print on the first two machines?

Thanks!

[newbie] bone to pick with Macmillan

2000-11-15 Thread S. Stubbs

Hey, I am a bit peeved. When mandrake 7.2 came out, I went and
downloaded the ISOs. I got DSL and CDburner so it was easy.
Well, being a newbie, I wanted to get a manual or something, and
heard that if you buy a distro, it comes with extra CDs of apps and
stuff, and of course a manual. So I wanted support and all these things.
Well I went to Wal-mart and bought Mandrake 7.2 Complete Retail
box version since it had 4 CDs and manual.
I take home and install. Then I started having a few quirks and problems,
of course I did mandrake update to update the prerelease version of
kde to final 2.0 version, and other stufff.
Well, still had a few quirks. I missed my Webmin tool from 7.1 and
I missed a few networking tools from 7.1 but alas they were no where
to be found on the walmart distro. I was quite perturbed and disheartened.
Finally late last night I went and viewed my downloaded ISOs of
7.2, and FOUND WEBMIN and MORE STUFF on the downloaded version!!
So, since my walmart distro was not quite right, I took a chance and
installed afresh the downloaded 7.2. NO MORE prerelease kde!!!
I had hardly any updates necessary!! I got more networking stuff, everything
seems to be running better!! The downloaded version is MUCH better.
I am definitely PEEVED that I spent $$ for the walmart version and would
like to know if there is a way to contact macmillan since I think they are

[newbie] Netscape 6 Install for 7.2

2000-11-15 Thread civileme

OK

You go to Netscape's site and navigate the ads to get to downloading netscape
6 for linux 2.2.--do this with Konqueror, NOT Netscape 4.73 or you will find
yourself in tail-chasing mode about enabling cookies you have already enabled.

And you download it.

Now look in your home directory and you will find a long name ending in
.tar.gz. Right click on it and open it with the Archiver.

Under "Actions" in the Archiver, select "Extract" let it extract to your
home directory.

Now bring up a terminal and do su - to get into root mode.

# cd /home/yourusername/netscape-install
# ./netscape-install

Select the recommended install because the Full will hang on personal
security manager. Apparently this file is troubled at the source.

To get Java

start up from a fresh terminal with the command

$ /usr/local/netscape/netscape

Render unto Caesar by selecting a login and putting your email address on
AOL's customer list, then start Netscape

The left 30% of the screen can be shoved out of the way by clicking on the
slider bar.

Now go to a site that features Java applets, and follow the instructions to
download the plug-in for linux. It will self-install. QUIT NETSCAPE and
start again from a terminal. You should now have a Java-enabled netscape.

My early tests show the performance unimpressive. It fails to open sites
that Netscape 4.73 handles nicely. It also pops up a password manager which
I believe should be disabled at earliest opportunity. The sidebar is full of
ads and is a terrible shopper--I found much better terms elsewhere.

I think that esound is a separate package from enlightenment.
So check if it is installed (rpm -qa |grep -i esound). If it is not,
install it from the CD (rpm -Uvh /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/esound*)
Read the doc (rpm -qd esound) and you should be able to make it work.

[newbie] cut/paste under KDE

2000-11-15 Thread Bruce Mohler

Dear newbie list reader,

I'm fairly new to Mandrake, adjusting from having used RH for
several years.

Under RH and KDE, I'm very used to the X Windows cut and paste
feature (just select it with the mouse pointer, then press both
buttons on my MS mouse to paste it into another window, field,
etc.). This feature doesn't work under MDK/KDE.

I do alot of work using KDE's Konsole. When I press both buttons,
a pop-up menu appears rather than pasting the selected text. If
I try to paste to another application nothing happens. If I try
to first copy like MS Windows has you do (^C) then nothing happens.
Well, in Konsole, it aborts the current line and gives you another
prompt.

Is there an easy to get this to work. I really rely on cut/paste
*alot*.

Thanks, in advance.

[newbie] Neworking fight.....

2000-11-15 Thread Mark P

I'm having trouble getting my networking working in 7.2
It finds my card, I even had it pinging once.
Powered it down to screw the card in then it didn't work again
Go through the network setup and it seems to work... But doesn't ping
Go through the configuration setup and it seems to work... But it doesn't
ping
Go through Linux Config.. And it seems to set up until it comes
time to activate changes..
and I get...
The following command told me that
somthing had to be done.
/etc/rc5.d/S10network probe
Service GPM is not running
Executing /etc/rc5.d/S85gpm start

Then
When I "do it"
The command
/etc/rc5.d/S10network reload is
taking longer than expected to take action...
And then I can re-run linuxconf
anymore until I reboot.
Is there any way to fix this?
It also show errors on bootup.

is the difference between grub and lilo?

you are not alone Susan ---

This whole thing has me wondering also. I bought 7.0 7.1 at Office Depot or Office
something (they all look alike) for $20 a pop and had no problems at all with any of
the CDs, installs or anything. now I'm seeing people on this list saying that the 7.2
they are getting at the store doesn't have all the features and all sort of other
strange stuff.. what up with this? I suppose Macmillan, like any other company,
is going to box anything it thinks it can sell, but if this release has problems why
is Mandrake letting them release it (i'm assuming they have some say in the matter) as
this is just going to bouce back and slap Mandrake in the end. I'm very very very
happy with 7.1 and i hope to be one more very (very cubed) happy with 7.2. i was
gonna buy the boxed version (since the manuals are not bad - and the install
instuctions are so detailed even i installed 7.0 right the first time) but now me
thinks i should just go with the disk from linuxcentral or something..

I am definitely PEEVED that I spent $$ for the walmart version and would
like to know if there is a way to contact macmillan since I think they are
misleading people about the retail box version!!

[newbie] 7.2

2000-11-15 Thread Marcia L Waller

Dear All, I am pleased with 7.2 as I mentioned before. I am getting
things corrected and working in a few hours rather than months.:)

Is StarOffice supplied with this distro?

Where is Ktail?

Unfortunately I lost my Hearts game in my 7 crash the other night as well
as my napster clone. By the way my husband who liked the MIcrosoft Hearts
really likes this Hearts for Linux.

I do not remember where to get the Hearts and napster now. I believe I
was using gnome napster which worked well for me.

As soon as my 4000 plus emails come in I will get back on cable email. I
do not know how I could get that many in 2 days. I think my cable service
provider saved all of those from my previous crash and sent them back to
me again.

Thanks. Marcia

Re: [newbie] LM7.2/Macmillain -- KDE2-Final?

2000-11-15 Thread abe

To those of us who don't use KDE it is just another package that comes
with our distribution. Get over it. Mandrake can't ba all things to
all people all the time. 1.94 or whatever is included with 7.2 works
fine anyway. Its fast, solid and nice to look at. If having the full
2.0 version is so important to you go download it. This is the linux
world after all. EVERYTHING IS A BETA PRODUCT IN LINUX. Its just that
some packages work better then others ;-)

Benjamin Sher wrote:

 Dear Charles, Paul and friends:

Thanks so much for the info.

I love Mandrake, but this decision NOT to include KDE 2.0 Final when a)
it is available by FTP download and b) Mandrake knew in advance
precisely when KDE 2.0 Final would be made availalbe has to be one of
the dumbest marketing decisions I have ever heard of. It reminds me of
Intel's famous chip fiasco some years back. Chairman Grove tried
initially to explain away the defective, inaccurate chip by saying that
most people don't care for accuracy anyway. According to Grove, this
dumb mistake and even dumber attempt at fooling the public cost Intel
eventually $500 million and it took them years to regain their
credibility. What it means, practically speaking, for Mandrake is that
for the next 4 or 5 months Mandrake will be getting irate, angry
complaints from hundreds if not thousands of disappointed people who
have spent $30 or $70 plus shipping on a beta product (in view of the
fact that the central feature of 7.2 is KDE 2).

This is a very strange development. I have been buying the official de
luxe versions of Mandrake for the past year in order to show my support
and in order to have the official version. This time, when rumors
started circulating that Mandrake's official, commercial version would
be a beta, I took insurance by also ordering CheapBytes' version because
they use the FTP download. I intend to send Mandrake's new "experiment"
in public relations forthwith back to them with a demand for a full
refund. Thank God I did not order the $70 deluxe version.

One thing that puzzles me, though, is that Macmillain does not yet have
LM 7.2 listed on their site. May I ask if those of you who reported this
sad news are speaking from first-hand experience or are you quoting a
press release. In other words, do you actually own a copy of
 Macmillain's 7.2 Complete?

If I have misunderstood anything here, if LM 7.2 really does have KDE
2.0 Final, then my apologies to Mandrake. If LM 7.2 is not yet
available, then I do hope somebody from Mandrake clarifies this critical
matter to us. Macmillain clearly says on mandrake's Products page: KDE
2.0 Final. That is the basis on which I ordered it online. If this is
not the case, please explain yourself. If it is NOT 2.0 Final but Almost
Final, then Mandrake should state "Almost Final." The difference between
an "Almost KDE 2.0 Final" and "KDE 2.0 Final" may see like nothing more
than a downloadable patch, but, I submit that it is unprofessional and
unethical to do so without letting the customer know in advance.

In sum, I very much hope that I am wrong. Will someone from Mandrake/
Macmillain please step forth and tell us exactly what's going on.

 Thank you.

It did occur to me that the problem with the missing icons might just be a
missing link, but wouldn't that also stop them showing up in gnome?

Actually knowing the partitions might be useful. Didn't even say if they
were on the same drive.

I never had this problem, but I know quite a bit about partitioning after
somehow installing 3 hard drives, one zip disk and a cdrom in one computer.
I could suggest checking the desktop directory to see if anything is
missing, but beyond that all I can say is "can you access them from the
console?"

Can you get to them from the colsole? If you can its just the icons but if
no the problem is somewhere in the mount config.

Makes sense. The drives must be set up as something and scsi is well
supported.

A quick look through windows system propeties shows 'Iomega parallel port

Marciafirst, as root, create a mount point in your /mnt
directory. For instance, in a console, type:

mkdir /mnt/zip

Then determine the device designation of your zip drive. If
it's an IDE device it'll be hdx where x is the letter one
higher than your last IDE hard drive. For instance, if you
have 1 IDE hard drive it is hda and the zip will be hdb.
Then, as root, edit /etc/fstab and add the line below:

/dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip vfat user,noauto 0 0

after that then right-click your desktop and choose 'Create
New' and then 'Floppy Device'. Name the new icon 'Zip' and
in the 'device' section choose your zip device from the list
(it reads your /etc/fstab file) '/dev/hdb4', set the mount
point as /mnt/zip and the file system type as vfat (for the
out-of-the-box formatted zip discs.

That's all. :-)

 For 7.1 or 7.2:
 Click on DrakConf

click on the traffic light to make sure webmin is present and running,
and
that postfix is present and running or sendmail is present and running and
NOT both. (the running application will be called "sendmail" by the rest
of
 the system)

If these are not present or running, then load and initiate (especially
 webmin)

Once you have Webmin up and running, fire up Netscape or Konqueror if you
have it and goto this URL

 http://127.0.0.1:1

And all the setup parameters will be yours, graphically, with help under
many
of the names, especially for postfix, which I highly recommend over
sendmail
for all but the most rugged and demanding applications, and even for those
if
 security is a concern.

[newbie] video driver problem

2000-11-15 Thread Vladimir Morozov

Dear linux-experts :-)

Please help!

My video card is ATI Mach64 GX. This card has an
accelerated driver in XF86. Somehow, when I use this
driver my x-session always hangs - it works for a
while, and then unexpectedly my display freezes.
I have narrowed down my problem to the fact that my
videocard glitches in accelerated mode, since i have
too little RAM (32MB). I have to run some simple
unaccelerated driver.

I tried to use a different video driver - so far i
found one - Generic VGA - it works JUST FINE - my
display never hangs, plus the whole system seems to
work faster(??). The only problem is that Gen. VGA
always overrides my resolution settings to 600x300
pixels (normally i work at 1024x748 ) - so i cannot do
anything good with my display when it is in 600x300
mode.

Is there some other driver (generic SVGA or something)
which would drive my videocard without acceleration
and give me normal resolution? What about earlier
versions of XFree86 - do they have unaccelerated
driver versions for my videocard?
