Re: [newbie] imwheel
Patrick, During a normal bootup, you can press "Shift" key and the Letter "I" (eye not ell) , and go into the interactive mode. Go to a text interface, login as root, and run "mouseconfig" . It will select the mouse for you and everything should run fine. Run the "shutdown -r now" command and when you get to your desktop everything shoud work. Now I wish to have imwheel automatically during X startup. The instructions (and the 3 books I have) are unclear on the following: "Restart X, run imwheel and everything should work fine. If it does, you should add this command to your '.xinitrc' or '.xsessionrc' to have it executed automatically on every X startup." Okay, no problem. Works fine. But - exactly WHAT command am I adding to the .xinitrc file? I have tried imwheel, /etc/X11/imwheel, /etc/X11/imwheelrc, exec imwheel, exec /etc/X11/imwheel. Does it matter where I add it? [newbie] loading apache at boot time
Hello! everybody, I have a Linux-Mandrake 7.0 and that it has an Apache server built in to it. but I decided to download an Apache Server from Apache's site and install it to my Mandrake box, My problem is that everytime I reboot my computer I have to manually load the apache that I've download and install and kill the exsisting Apache server. How do I tell my Mandrake box to load the Apache that I've downloaded and not the one that that is built on to it.? Re: [newbie] loading apache at boot time
Jhun; Log in to your PC as "root". Open a console/terminal. run "kpackage". Click on "File", "Find Package" , and type in "apache". You should find up to 8 entries by continously clicking the "find" button. In the proiper sequence, un-install each package one at a time. The sequence of the un-install depends on which apache packages you have installed. Each one that generates an error will tell you which package(s) it depends upon. Un-install those packages first, then un-install the dependant packages. Make sure that you have the newset versions of the new apache packages before un-installing anything! ( they can be found at www.rpmfind.net, or www.webmin.org ). Save a copy of your web-site material first! Install the new apache packages (again in the order determined by dependancies, and restart your PC/Server. Use webmin to configure the new apache. Your done! [newbie] Mandrake 8.0 beta 1
Just wondering if anyone has given it a try? I know its not super stable but how unstable is it? I don't want it crashing all the time but I have nothing mission critical. I want some of the usb support along with some of the new packages and figure it may be easier (and possibly less hassle with package conflicts) to give 8.0 a try. So exactly how stable or unstable is this beta release for anyone who has given it a try? On Friday 02 March 2001 10:18 pm, Robert Reed wrote: Is it wise to upgrade to Kernel 2.4, or just wait for Mandrake 8.0? That really depends on you. Do you need something that 2.4.x provides? ...or do you want a 2.4.x just for the fun of it? Either reason or anything inbetween is valid, but you'll need to do a little more than with a 2.2.x upgrade. You'll need to compile rather than just install the binary rpm upgrade to maintain complete LM 7.x functionality. I recommend using kernel-doc-2.4.2-4mdk kernel-headers-2.4.2-4mdk kernel-source-2.4.2-4mdk or newer (eg, -5mdk). Older patch levels had some quirks. Use the kernel upgrade instructions at mandrakeuser.org You'll also need to uprade to 'modutils-2.4.2-2mdk' and 'ppp-2.4.0-3mdk' or newer. I use the cooker src rpms, and rebuild 'em on my 7.2 system. Some things to watch for during config (eg, 'make xconfig'): enable (Y), '2.2 ... style ipchains' so that you can still use apps like PMfirewall, or to retain your present ipchains firewall. Enable (Y) vfat support if you dual boot Windoze. Leave 'supermount' and 'ReiserFS' as modules if you use those. Also, BEFORE you boot any 2.4.x kernel, you need to edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime and change the location of 'supermount.o' to the new location that 2.4.x kernels use (eg, /lib/modules/2.4.2 version/kernel/fs/supermount/supermount.o ). If you don't do this 'supermount' will be disabled and your 'fstab' will be overwritten. Keep in mind that booting a 2.2.x kernel after doing this edit will also disable supermount and overwrite fstab. So make a bakup copy of your current /etc/fstab in the event you want to go back to 2.2.x (and read 'man supermount') If you have any ramdisk requirements (almost everybody does), don't forget to run 'mkinitrd' as per the mandrakeuser.org instructions. If you followed mandrakeuser's advice on 'Makefile' edits, and also used their suggested steps (particularly 'make install') to compile the kernel and modules, then all the proper files and links are installed for you in /boot. Just check lilo or grub, and boot your new kernel. If you haven't got the slightest idea about all the above, then it's prob'ly wise to wait for Mandrake 8.0 ; -- Dale Earnhardt, the greatest stock car driver ever, he's won his 8th and His Greatest Championship Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay

Re: [newbie] What's wrong with my DVD?
I just finished getting this to work. Here's what I had to do: 1) First get the links corrected for your two drives (CDRW and DVD). You can check the answer that helped me from the expert mail list archive at: http://www.mail-archive.com/expert@linux-mandrake.com/msg31476.html. 2) Next decide what software you are going to use for DVD. I chose XINE. You can get the official release from http://xine.sourceforge.net/. If you want a version that will play commercial DVD's you can go to http://gape.ist.utl.pt/ment00/linuxdvd.html 3) Before installing XINE I needed to be running XFree86 version 4.x. Even though I had selected this during my mandrake install, it was not what I was running. The details and corrective actions can be found at: http://www.thehaus.net/AltOS/Linux/ht-xfree4nvidia-mdk72.shtml. a more detailled version can be found at: http://members.home.net/linuxfrog/nvidia.html (This information also has a lot of data about the NVIDIA graphics drivers, which you can ignore if you don't need). (Also, I did not have to follow all of the steps. I followed the instructions for removing the version 3 rpm files, then removed the version 4 server rpm, reinstalled it and changed the links. I am not sure why I had to remove and re-install the version 4 server, but my attempt to create the symbolic link failed before I tried this). 4) You need to have the link to the DVD drive set as /dev/dvd and not /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom2. You can either take care of this as part of step 1 or now. 5) Make sure the dvd drive is set to use DMA. hdparm -d /dev/hdd will let you know if this is on. If not hdparm -d1 /dev/hdd should correct this. read the man page for hdparm before trying it. 6) Now you should be all set to install XINE and give it a whirl. You can also set the dvd as a raw device if your system is too slow. I didn't see an improvement, but hey - I'm still trying to figure this whole thing out. For XINE you can check some of the FAQS, the XINE mailing list, or the IRC channel mentioned on their home page for more support. Matt Schroeder wrote: I have been running Mandrake 7.2 Kernel 2.2.17 and at bootup I see that my DVD is assigned to dev/hdd (Pioneer 6X) Yet when I try to use the DVD drive for a cdrom it does nothing and says the device doesn't exist. What didn't I do to get it to work? I try to mount it and it never works... In /mnt I have cdrom and cdrom2 but for all I know these may be both links to my master cd which is an HP 8100 CDRW I want to get dvd's playing on this thing. Actually I'd like the drive to work period. As of now it's as if it isn't there. [newbie] I have a strange system!
hello all! I have found out a thing that is quite strange... If I install mandrake 7.2 with ext2 all is fine If I install mandrake 7.2 with reiserfs all is fine If I install Mandrake 8.0 (beta1) with ext2 all is fine But if I install Mandrake 8.0 (beta1) with reiserfs id doesen't work (unable to mount root fs) I think that there is an bug in the 2.4.x kernel that make do so linux can't detect the filesystem correctly on a ASUS A7V motherboard. If I install MD 8 in vmware with reiserfs it works. So MD 8 + reiserfs is working, but not on some of my computers. Because if I install MD 7.2 with raid0 it's working. But If I install a kernel 2.4.1 or 2.4.2 it wount boot up! Same with reiserfs. Is there anyone out there that have been able to get the MD 8 + reiserfs or raid0 (on root) + Asus A7v to working? Regards Niklas

Hi Ron... I don't use SO so I can't help directly -- but here are a couple of links that should help. The first is for the Mandrakeuser.org site that discusses CUPS printing generally: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups0.html The second talks about SO specifically: http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups8.html Paraguay, eh? Interesting. I was in Venezuela a couple of times last year and I am hoping to go to Guyana this summer. South America is amazing, a whole other world... Buenos tardes! M. [newbie] ALT-GR in MDK 7.2, XFree86 4.0.1
To put it shortly, the ALT-GR key behaves as the ALT key. In other words, i can't type any alt-gr-only chars, such as @ (got that one by copy/paste).. I had the same problem in XF86 3.3.6, then i could solve it by typing a line with something like "ALT_R = ModeShift" (don't remember the exact line) in the config file, but this didn't work in XF86 4.0.1.. I tried putting it in both XF86Config and XF86Config-4 (using Option). I even tried setting keymappings with keycodes, but alt-gr still thinks it's alt.. Thanks for any help! Gerry
Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues
Bruce, Yes, the boot partition starts at roughly 2 GB, and all my Linux partitions live below cylinder 1024. Thanks for bringing that up. I have, perhaps another clue to the problem. I used Partition Magic to look at the Ext2 partitions since my last installation failure, at it said that 2 of the root partition's 4.5 GBs are used. The installation of packages wasn't a psych-out. One other clue: the floppy drive does work when I make a replication disk. So the failure to make the boot disk has nothing to do with the drive itself (although we pretty much expected that). But everything up to this point in the installation pretends to work, including the installation of all the packages. I've tried reputedly, about a dozen attempts so far. I tried making Ext2 partitions with the Mandrake installer and with Partition Magic 6 in Windows. I've tried using Ext2 partitions as well as ReiserFS partitions using the Mandrake installer. I've tried installing from a CD-RW that I burned from the downloaded ISO, and I've tried installing from a CD-R, even of a different brand. I've tried diagnosing problems with my HD with both Partition Magic 6, and with Norton's Disk Doctor 2001, and there aren't any problems. And Windows has no problems accessing its own partitions, of course. I've tried wiping the mbr so that lilo or grub get a clean shot at installation (although not in conjunction with these other things). If my computer had a neck, I would choke it to death. Miark - Original Message - From: "Anthony" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 02, 2001 7:59 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Can't install -- more clues So what exactly is the problem? I don't think ReiserFS filesystems do bad sector checking. At least I don't remember getting asked that when I formatted my Linux partitions to that. Have you tried jsut checking the swap partition and then moving on? Nobody has even guessed at my problem yet, but I have more clues that may help you help me. Here's the full scenario: I'm installing 7.2 for dual-boot with Win98. When I get to DiskDrake in set-up, I choose to make the three following partitions: * Logical, ReiserFS, 5 GB, mounted at / * Logical, ReiserFS, 1 GB, mounted at /home * Logical, Linux swap, 500 MB It says that it's formatting the Reiser partitions, but it only says that for about 2 seconds. Then, when it asks which partitions on which to check for bad sectors, it _only_ lists the swap partition. If I go back and make the Reiser partitions Linux native, then everything is fine. Well, it's as close to fine as it will get. Now I remember somebody on this list saying that what I want to do is possible. Were they wrong? How do I implement ReiserFS and make it work? Miark -- Anthony http://binaryfusion.net Press any key to continue, or any other key to quit. Did you set your Linux boot partition below the 8Gb point? 73 -bruce-
RE: [newbie] repost : lan problems
Thinnet networks are subject to something akin to "standing waves". The signal "bounces" off of one end of the cable and back. This results in an "echo" which is 180 degrees out of phaze with the next incoming wave... The two cancel out and you end up with a dead spot on the cable, where if you plug something in, you get no response. The Ethernet terminators are there to reduce or eliminate this, which is why they are at the physical "ends" of the cable. They are not always successful. You may be seeing the same. You may have a bad "T" connector as well. I've seen more bad "T" connectors than one would expect. Check your lan cables. Make sure that the center pin is not being pushed into the socket when you plug it into the Ethernet card or T connector. This will also cause problems. The center pin must not move so it can penetrate the receptacle. Since your LAN setup worked for awhile look for a physical problem of some sort. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Quaylar Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2001 6:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [newbie] repost : lan problems At 17:45 03.03.2001 -0500, you wrote: I hope that your ethernet addresses were a mistype... THANK TO ADVANCE Javier, (1) As far as your english there isn't anything I can help you with there. However, if it's any consolation to you I could understand you just fine. (2) Linux handle drives such as floppies and CDROM's differently then windows does, and therefore you must mount those drives at the time when you want to use them and unmount them when you're finished. That's pretty much standard practice in the Linux environment. There is a feature called "automount" but unfortunately it's much more trouble then it's worth at this time so I would suggest using it. Unlike the hard drives that the OS mounts at boot time floppy drives and CDROM drives are mounted on demand thusly; mount /dev/fd0 (the floppy drive) to unmount the floppy drive umount /dev/fd0 ( and yes, that is spelled correctly. It IS umount and no "unmount" The CDROM is done the same way. The only difference is you name a different device. Namely the CDROM; mount /dev/cdrom to unmount umount /dev/cdrom That's really all there is to it. (3) Your modem is an easy affair and when you see how it's done you will think you're in windows again. the kppp interface looks and acts a lot like the modem config in windows. At the moment I can't recall the correct menu items to get to the interface, but you can activate it in a terminal window by typing kppp on the command line and hitting ENTER. when the interface comes up you will need to setup the modem. do this by clicking on the "setup" button. Supply all the necessary information and don't forget to supply your ISP's DNS numbers. The connections work much better when they're in there. When you're finished hit the "connect" button and you're online. -- Mark You know...if my wife were any nicer to me I'd have to buy a new suite!

I have posted detailed instructions about connecting to @home some months back. You should be able to find them by looking through the list archives at http://www.linux-mandrake.com.
