[newbie-it] compilazione livid
Paolo P.s.- La mia distro Linux-mdk7.2.

[newbie] SCSI cdrom installation
Hi I'm installing Linux Mandrake 8.0 BETA 2 on my IBM 386X laptop using a backpack (microsolutions) cdrom with SCSI connection. I did this installation using the same devices with RedHat 5.2 and to my surprise it had a module (bpcd.o) spcifically for this external cdrom. However, Mandrake hasn't. I tried to copy the module from RedHat onto a floppy and, during install, using the cdrom image bootfloppy, choose "use third-party module" or something like that. Mandrake recognizes the file on the floppy but when I selectsit it says"insmod failed". For some reason it can't install this module. This is very frustrating and I'd appreciate any help on the subject. So far most of the ones I have go right over my head with no info on commands for me to get familiar with first before actually typing them in and sitting back to see what happens. Thank you in advance. Ok well as said before www.linuxdoc.org has all available documentation and howtos beside that i can give you some very usefull tricks. For example you can always if you want to do something but you dont know which command (program) to use use the apropos and whatis comands example: you want to read mail and you need a mail prog type: $ apropos mail it will list you all comands that have something to do with mail Same thing the other way around you know there is a prog called pine but you dont know what it does type: $ whatis pine it will tell you what pine is for . To find out how to use pine type: $ man pine also one of the best features in linux is that you dont need to write the whole comand its enough if you write the first letter or the first 2 letters and press TAB it will then list you all commands (programs) which start with that letter and so on. The same works with almost everything in linux you dont ever need to write a full path its enough if you want to go lets say to the dir /usr/local/bin/netscape type: $ cd /usTAB/locTAB/bTAB/neTAB it will fill in the missing pieces as soon as you hit the TAB key . To update the whatis/apropos database type: $ makewhatis good luck and give it a try that makes the handling of the system a lot quicker (BTW) even win2k has adapted this TAB thing now . Reg. Re: [newbie] SCSI cdrom installation
Mandrake 8.0 Bea requires a minimum Pentium processor. And the module built for the 2.0 kernel of redHat 5.2 is NOT going to work with a 2.4 kernel, which is why insmod failed. You might be able to get Mandrake 5.3 somewhere or you could try RH 6.0, but a 386 just isn't adequate for 8.0, nor is a 486. It is compiled for a Pentium class and up, exclusively, not just optimized for it. FYI, I've been using the 8.0beta2 for a few days now. I had to go to 8.0 because the 7.2 installer freezes on my machine (no idea why). 8.0 is great! Anti-aliased fonts, latest kde and gnome, built in support for my ATA100 bus. I did notice that the reported compiler version is 2.96 though. It looks like mandrake is doing the same thing redhat did w/ 7.0 and using a development version of the gcc compiler. I didn't check to see if mandrakes 2.96 could build the kernel (since redhat's 2.96 cannot). Oh well, I installed 2.95.3 for my own development needs. [newbie] 1st Stage Install Failure CD-ROM
Hi I'm new to Linux... How new, you may ask? Well, so new I'm not qute sure what I'm letting myself in for One of the reasons for choosing Mandrake's distribution was for ease of use. Question / problem: Version 7.2 I have a machine that does NOT support booting from the CD-ROM directly, so I am forced to use a boot disk, created from \images\cdrom.img. During the 1st stage of the installation ('DOS' graphical interface), it says Starting: please Wait... After waiting a long time, it then says CDROM: Initializing CDROM... After a hell of a long tine, I guess it fails, and then asks me to ID the type of CD-ROM drive I have. I then specify 'OTHER' and select it as an IDE-CD, to which I say to do an AutoProbe. The system comes back with the answer that it can't detect the device anywhere on the system. Is there a switch (?) I can use to log the boot process to post here for all you experts' perusal? I have a: P75, 16MB RAM 1.2 GB IDE HDD on the PRIMARY channel as MASTER IDE CD-ROM on the PRIMARY channel as SLAVE For the record, during the initial boot process it also comes up with the following: hda is correctly ID'ed as my Quantum 1.2MB HDD then Partition check hda: irq timeout (repeated 3 times) then ide0: unexpected interrupt (this entire process then repeats 3 times) Then goes into the 'dos' graphical interface Thanks in advance for all the help Johan PS I have tried 2 KNOWN working drives... At least they work under all versions of Windows.
[newbie] AHHHHHHHH!! too many problems
OK, This is the second time I've tried going the linux route... it was going good until I can't get X to switch to my TNT2 Ultra without throwing an error at me. It's only recognizing 128 megs of ram. I have 256. The first 128 are in 2, 64 mb sticks. Under HardDrake my vortex2 is detected but it doesn't know what it is. Also under HardDrake it has no record of my video card. I accidently killed my mouse by accidently clicking usb when it was using ps/2... oops, so right now I can't do anything in X. Oh, and something that doesn't seem right is when I try to get the new version of MandrakeUpdate through the version that I already have it tries to install every possible update from the server, even though I know it doesn't need alot of it... (nothing should need 108 dependencies) THINGS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO IN LINUX (Can linux do it?) Be able to use WINE with all the trimmings (including full 3d rendering). Be able to use my TVCard with capture ability. Be able to play DVD's. [newbie] ATI Rage Fury Pro video I/O
Hi ! I just bought a ATI Rage Fury Pro video I/O card, and I wonder how I could get the TV I/O part to work (the video and 3D work fine). I couldn't find anything on the Internet; I already succeded in installing and getting to work the Guillemot Maxi TV 3 card, so I suppose the probem isn't trivial... Thanks in advance to anybody who has an idea ! Emmanuel ** Bonjour ! Merci d'avance ! RE: [newbie] AHHHHHHHH!! too many problems
Be able to play DVD's. First of that is again the law. Owell. You need to look at the www.2600.com web site. The only OS that can run a DVD in the leagel since is MACOS and WinBLOWS. You can look on the internet for the DeCSS code that will decryp the DVD's information. Good luck getting the DVD to work. Also I am looking for Howtos for Linux. I found a good site called www.ibiblo.org. They have howtos in plan txt and html also pdf. Hope some of this will help. RE: [newbie] SiS on-board graphics
Well if was a windows machine I would tell you to get the updated video drivers for the computer. Or you might think of a new video card for the computer. I hate intergated anything. Video is the worst. I do know a good chep web site called www.computergate.com They have great prices. No I am not selling you anything. Just trying to get you up and running. After you installed the new card their is a way to disable the video card in the BIOS. In most case. Sometimes not even neccesay to go into the BIOS. But you might see someone that has spent a little more time on linux. Brandon A+ Computer Techniction. Brand0n Andr3ws --== Sent via Deja.com ==-- http://www.deja.com/

On Sunday 01 April 2001 00:49, you wrote: OK, This is the second time I've tried going the linux route... it was going good until I can't get X to switch to my TNT2 Ultra without throwing an error at me. The TNT2 is supported only in 2D by free software drivers. The closed-source driver is available from the NVidia site for full 3D acceleration. There are several sites with instructions on how to integrate it. Many list members can give you the URLs. It's only recognizing 128 megs of ram. I have 256. The first 128 are in 2, 64 mb sticks. DrakConf=Boot=Configure LILO/GRUB in the blank that says "Append" once you click on your linux boot, just add mem=255M (or mem=247M if you have onboard 8M video) You can have only one video card running/configured except for a few dual-head configurations supported by XFree 4.0.x, so install the video card you want to use in the installation process. Disable others in your BIOS. Under HardDrake my vortex2 is detected but it doesn't know what it is. Also under HardDrake it has no record of my video card. That's because Aureal had proprietary drivers--it was basically a win sound card. Now they are bankrupt and never opened the source on their driver, so we have no support available. There are sites which carry on the tradition, and list members know them, for possibly current drivers for the Aureal Vortex. If you have a large brand-name computer this may still be a problem. For example the Turtle Beach Montego II made by Aureal for Dell was different than the one offered the retail market and had different drivers. I accidently killed my mouse by accidently clicking usb when it was using ps/2... oops, so right now I can't do anything in X. You can edit by hand te file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to fix that (it's mostly plain text) or you can run the configuration program again (you must be root and it is called mousedrake, the video is called XFdrake, btw). Oh, and something that doesn't seem right is when I try to get the new version of MandrakeUpdate through the version that I already have it tries to install every possible update from the server, even though I know it doesn't need alot of it... (nothing should need 108 dependencies) You have installed conflicting packages from a very early edition of 7.2 to get that message. THINGS I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO IN LINUX (Can linux do it?) Be able to use WINE with all the trimmings (including full 3d rendering). check codeweavers Be able to use my TVCard with capture ability. It might be supported after you get everything else configured Be able to play DVD's. Xine and nist do well, but decoders--that's another question.
