Win2K and Mandrake should get along just fine. I've got XP and
Mandrake running on a workstation at home and play real nice together.
The only time I've heard of folks having trouble with those two or
others similar as in NT and Linux is with bootloaders other then LILO.
That is not to say that the other BL's aren't any good or you
shouldn't use them. Thats just the only instance that i've heard of
 that being a problem.

I had a similar situation. Only booted to Windows once in the last
couple of weeks but it hung and stepped on the registry. Quickest
solution was just Reinstall.
Worked fine for Windows but overwrote the MBR.

Reboot with CD#1 in the drive choosing repair. Read the directions about
using mount /mnt or some such and then running /sbin/lilo. Exit, Exit,
Reboot and all was fine again.

Richard.

[newbie] ADSL - starting at boot

2002-09-04 Thread Brian Parish

I have a server using 8.2 running as a ADSL firewall. Works very
nicely. When I run Mandrake Control Center System Services, I can
see adsl listed as a service and can start it successfully from there.
Clicking on the on boot button also works, but it doesn't stick. i.e.
Running MCC again shows it not selected to start at boot time and true
enough - it doesn't.

I have put a one line script in /etc/rc3.d to make it start, but it
would appear to be a more elegant solution if the services panel did its
job. Am I missing something here?

 Hi Angus,

Maybe you're just one of the lucky few. If so, we'll just take comfort
in the fact that there are actually folks out there that haven't been
bitten by the ME dragon. Frankly, ME is THE worst thing to ever come out
of Redmond, Washington. I can't believe they actually released that mess
and called it an Operating System. The only thing worse then that is the
fact that they actually got paid money by people for the thing.

The old adage is still true however. If it isn't broke then don't fix
it. If you're not having any trouble then leave it be. I wouldn't do any
extensive system or disk maintainence on it though using _any_ tools
native to ME though. Not with it's current track record of misfortune
 and dataloss.

If, on the other hand you were to go out and purchase a Windows XP Home
edition, (however, the professional edition is much perfered if you've
got to), I'm sure your computer would be far happier and your data MUCH
 safer.

 Mark

MUCH safer, yeah right. It would then belong to Micro$oft.

If you have no further use for ME Angus by all means trash it. Me, i still
resort back to my Windows to get screen shots for manuals, etc.

Unfortunately that is not always the case. There are many many emails
that peeps here have posted that never have made it to the list. If you
are in a serious discussion and this occurs on one of your replies
repeatedly (as has happened to me), then it turns into a majorly
aggravating problem.

One case in point was when I was posting job leads to some of the IT
peeps on the expert list; namely Civileme, Dr Jung, and Mike Holt.
After multiple postings to the list under various subject headings, body
changes, and message id's, the email still never made it; a total of at
least 15 transmissions. At different times (and different days), I
should mention.

In another case there was a discussion involving sound cards and
hardware; my replies never made it back to the list on that one either.
There are several other examples and I have run other tests but...you
get the idea. Lately the problem has not been as bad, perhaps it was
fixed over the holidays, or the person responsible was terminated. We
can only hope.

[newbie] nis password change doesnt work

2002-09-04 Thread Mike Barnard

I have a network that has a samba serving as the pdc, manages my windows logins, roaming profiles and all.
I have recently finished configuring nfs/nis over mandrake 8.1 as the server and SuSE linux 7.2 on the client side. all my exports are working fine and nothing could be better, except that i cant change the passwords over nis.
whenever i try to using "yppasswd" i get the reply as

Changing NIS account information for mKwatampora on tech.mak.ac.ug.
Please enter old password:
Sorry.
mkwatampora@tech:~>

the password information isnt changed. when i change the password in linuxconf, i can login only when using a windows machine, but cant login with the new password on any linux machine. the troublesome bit comes in because on the linux machines, i can login with the old password that i have just changed over linuxconf.

I have tried to merge the smbpasswd and passwd files but some daemons dont take of when i do this. i have tried creating a new password list to work from but still no hope. Is there anything i am missing? are there any bugs with these two distributions because im thinking of kicking on of the two out.

I have the latest version of ypserv, ypbind and yptools and nfs-utils. i really dont know why it doesnt work. help anybody.
Thanks Mike

Try uncommenting (remove the # sign) this option in your

It is in the

[newbie] help please, keyboard rreeppeeaattiinngg

2002-09-04 Thread Chris Spackman

Hi all,

I was given a new computer at work and they allowed me to put linux on
it (they don't care what i use as long as the work gets done). They were
even nice enough to get starsuite for me. :-) (The computer guy said
that starsuite is selling like crazy - one of the most popular programs
at the moment.)

Anyhow, I put mandrake 8.2 on it and it works fine except for one or two
things. The major problem is that the keyboard repeat rate is totally
f**ked up. Typing quickly (normal speed for someone used to typing)
causes a large number or double or triple letters, like `mman kbbdrate'.

It does not seem to be affected by changing kbdrate or by changing the
settings in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Changing those settings works for the
regular repeat, but does nothing to prevent the annoying semi-random
repeats. I found something on google about commenting out some code in
some file in (from memory, I am not at work nor on the net as I write
this) /usr/src/?/arch/i386/??. Anyhow, I commented out the relevant
section in whatever file that was, but the keyboard still repeats. Does
that file (whose name I cannot remember) affect anything, or would I
have to recompile the kernel or something first?

Any ideas? Could it be a hardware problem? I have found that it is less
likely to happen if I pound the keys (imaging typing on an old,
non-electric typewriter). Needless to say, that solution is almost as
bad as the problem.

tia

[newbie] kde_greet not starting - help

2002-09-04 Thread Stephen Kitchener

Hi,

I have done somthing to my set up and don't know how to fix it, (otherwise
this email is a bit pointless :-) )

I hope someone can help.

I think that I have pinned it down to kde_greet not starting on boot, I have
compared two machines installed the same way and this is the process that is
missing.

I have checked /etc/inittab and that is set to run-leve5 and that it has the
right incantation for starting x ie.

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

In fact the /etc/inittab on each machine is identical.

startx works AFTER I have logged in, the bit that is missing from the startup
process, is the intial login screen to X, where the user chooes which window
manager they want to use etc

Clearly /usr/bin/kdm_greet is run as part of the kde start up as I get the
error message

This program is part of kdm and should not be run manually. But where the
call to this program is located I cannot find.

Can someone help please ?

All help appriciated.

Does this happen when in Gnome or any other Window Manager other than KDE, but

If so it is a bug I reported to Cooker in 9.0Beta2 but no one else seemed to

If this describes your symptoms I suggest a clearly worded post to the Cooker

Re: [newbie] permissions hell

2002-09-04 Thread Michael Viron

That doesn't really help - but other unices have a 'wheel' but Linux
doesn't really have it per se. It can no doubt be added, or even faked,
if need be.

Actually, linux does have a wheel group, as shown below.

mviron@server ~ $ more /etc/group | grep wheel
wheel:x:10:root
mviron@server ~ $

If you need something owned by root to be accessible to the wheel group,
you'd change the settings from root:root to root:wheel.

[newbie] Weird lockup solved

2002-09-04 Thread Paul

Hi all,

About a month ago my machine locked up bigtime. It just stopped responding,
and I could not find out what had happened. Just that a tremendous amount of
processes were running under root. Loads of shells, vi's and crond's. I
could only think huh and press ctrl-alt-del (which then locked up
everything, leaving RESET as last resort).

Now I found out what was the problem.

Never, but I mean NEVER, put something stupid in root crontab like

55 11 * * * crontab -e /backup/crontab.root

crontab -l is much smarter... Ur Hurray for typos...

This is, a super pain. I want to be a good doobie and not play around with

I need the floppy drive(No network yet, coming soon)
So smarty that I am I pull out the books. Yes books.
Then I edit /etc/group and make my user part of all the groups that look

Doesn't help a bit. Finally in a fit of desparation I add myself to root.
Which also doesn't help a bit.
Oh, I do log out between tries, but I presume theres some way around that,
 which I'd appreciate knowing
So I'm stumped, I can mount and unmount but not use... HELP!

Things are quiet at the moment - I think people are on holiday, so I'll try
to help although I'm not an expert.

Have you got 'user' in the definition lines in your /etc/fstab? If not, add
'user,' (without quotes of course) after the mount bit dev=/dev/whatever and
before the fs=iso9660 bit.

Hope I'm not missing the point, or saying something obvious, but I've had
a similar problem in several incarnations of Mandrake. The problem (in my
case, at least), is that the pathname is wrong. The pathname I found
was /usr/X11R6/bin/drakconf, but it should be /usr/sbin/drakxconf.
Note the pathname difference *and* the difference in filenames, drakxconf
instead of drakconf (which is the command-line version). I fixed it by
right-clicking on the menu-entry, going down to properties, clicking on
that, and changing the path-name. Then I opened menudrake, changed the
pathname there, and saved. Finally, I trashcanned the old desktop icon
and dragged a new one from the menu. Presto! Mandrake Control Center
works.

ps. I had a lot of frustration with menudrake until I realized that you
have to rightclick on the menu-item, choose properties and change the
pathname *there* in addition to changing it in menudrake.

[newbie] glib dependency hell

2002-09-04 Thread Todd Slater

8.2 download edition. Trying to upgrade some packages, need
glib2/libglib2. I can't install via rpm because it conflicts with
glib1.3x. I can't uninstall glib1.3x because it wants to uninstall
everything else. Tried compiling glib2, even followed the instructions in
install, but no happiness. Has anybody on the list been able to upgrade
glib that can share any tricks?

2002-09-04 Thread dfox

Can any one tell me how i can setup Konqueror so I can browse the local
network like you do under ms windows. Or is that not possable

You should be able to click on Services (the yellow star) and then
go to lan browser and then (if things are set up correctly) view
the other systems on the network.

On mine - I don't have a network, but strangely enough it tells
me that it can't connect to localhost. That of course is defined
elsewhere (/etc/hosts). I can of course ping localhost so some-
where there is a miscommunication between konqueror and the
services it uses to go to the LAN.

Konqueror does use a special notation lan:// to denote machines
on the local area network.

How do I get stop dhcp?

If you are asking how to stop Linux dhcp services immediately, then it's

service dhcpd stop

If you want to edit how the service loads at boot time, then run the
chkconfig command...

chkconfig --help

chkconfig --list

The winblows boxen will set themselves up on some kind of freaky 169
subnet or some crap like that if you don't have a dhcp server on the lan
for them to talk to. I assume you have gone into the network setups for
the winblows boxen and set everything to static instead of dhcp, since
it sounds like you are putting the Mandrake dhcp service to rest.

How do I turn off the connection sharing?

For a winblows ICS server, you can remove the internet sharing icons
from the network icon under control panel. That effectively uninstalls
ICS.

For Mandrake you just go into mandrake control center (mcc) and down to
internet stuff, and you should be able to disable it's Internet
Connection Sharing from there.

 Anything else I should do?

If it's workingNo. ;)
