[newbie] Rpmdrake bug and question re running 10.1 cooker

2004-04-06 Thread Chuck Mattsen
Well, as it turns out my botched KDE (and other updates) was due to that
rpmdrake bug (Bugzilla 9411) ... packages were downloading but not
installing, and remaining in /var/cache/urpmi/rpms.

The bad news is that it threw my system into a state of disarray for
awhile (particularly if, like me, you use KDE 99% of the time :-) and
required some "manual labor" to get things back to normal.

The good news is two-fold: (1) that it gave me an opportunity to find,
download and apply a patch from Bugzilla (which //did// fix the problem,
and left me feeling warm, fuzzy and accomplished all over), and (2) that
it required some work to get things going again this morning but I
//could// get them going -- something I doubt would have been possible
on the Windows side of things without major hassles and/or reinstall.

So, here's my question ... I am, by default, now running cooker 10.1
because of the updates from last night (the communication surrounding
the mirrors, directory structures and update procedures being the
subject of a different thread, not this one ).

Given that I know cooker is the "bleeding edge" and not for a production
machine (this one isn't), would it now make sense for me to simply
remain with cooker, at least for awhile? If I were to do so, would I be
able to continue updating using the cooker mirrors as I've been doing
these past weeks with the 10CE updates, or would it require a different
procedure(s) as 10.1 continues to diverge from 10.0, and onward? (I've
seen mention of mirroring the directory structure, etc., locally, I
think, and don't quite understand that concept, nor am I sure I would be
able to do so.)

For those more-than-newbies who have experience with running previous
cooker versions, //how// volatile is it, i.e., are problems which occur
generally annoyances from which one may recover after another update
cycle or two, or are they more-critical show-stoppers which would render
one's system useless and force a reinstall?

If I //weren't// to stay on the cooker path, should I now expect
problems with my "slightly cooker" current install (with its 10.1
designation) with respect to trying to stay current with 10.0 updates (I
suspect so?), or am I pretty much stuck with the system as is until 10.1
comes out and/or I do a reinstall, or ...?

Hope you get the gist of what I'm asking, probably in a more or less
bass ackwards way here ... I think I have a grasp of //some// of the
concepts and structures involved here, but not all, certainly, so I need
clarification up the proverbial wazoo before I'm comfortable with a
particular course of action.

TIA

[newbie] Decent Audio Track Ripper?

2004-04-06 Thread Marc Resnick
Does anyone know of a decent track ripper/encoder for ripping tracks off
CDs? I've used Kaudiocreator, but I was listening today, and I just
happened to notice that the sound quality is about equal to that of
crap. Right, so anyway, I may sound a bit nitpicky, but it sounds like
someone dropped my computer from a third story window a few times. Oh
also, I'm sure it's the track ripping, because anything I get off
apollon plays fine.

[newbie] 10CE Updates -- Broken?

2004-04-06 Thread John Wilson
Hi all!

I know that this has been gone over but I can't find the threads right now.

As I recall there is something transit right now with updates to 10CE. The
graphical sources manager keeps retrieving either empty lists or seriously
broken ones. And all appear to be development sources, even if they say
stable. So, it appears that I'm still getting cooker lists. :-)

At the risk of seeming thick..where are the updates? :-)

(This really shouldn't be happening. For 10.1 and on the sources need to be
moved as quickly as possible and the graphical sources manager should stop
retrieving cooker lists.)

Thanks!

ttfn

John

This is a public mirror system and it is up to the owner of the mirror to make
sure it gets updated properly. Mandrake has reorganized it's primary mirror
and cannot control what everybody else is doing.

As for timing, the time of now is probably the best there is. Knowing it was
going to take some time topropgate the changes to the mirrors, the timing
between 10.0 being sent to manufacturer and the release of the boxed sets is
probably the best time. Any sooner and beta testing would have been
disrupted and any later and the update wouldn't have been in place for the
release of the boxes (which would have really been criticized, oh you don't
think so?)

You just have to manually check the mirrors until you find one that has been
updated to the new structure. Try here

hey thanks for the link, I can't believe how impatient we are (me

but it would have been better if Mandrake made some form of formal
announcement in a flash newsletter and on the club website.

10 Community was overall a great experience and I think its a good idea,
but there was a big problem in communicating what exactly it is about
and how it will be implemented.

[newbie] Kernel compiling for Driver

2004-04-06 Thread martin brandt
Hello everyone,
Im wanting to install my drivers for my ATI Radeon 9200SE ive bought recently
on my mdk 9.2, and i have downloaded the appropriate rpm, but i need to tailor
my Kernel to allow the driver to work. Now messing around with Kernel sounds
complicated and i was wondering if it is actually doable by someone like me
with little Linux knowledge. Would i be able to do it following instructions?
Would it take too long?

The error is documented here: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4475.html

Thanks in advance.

I have subsequently seen a couple of rpmdrake bugzilla reports that

In any case, I seem to be fully operational and back to normal now,

The best place to get rar is from Vincent Danen's excellent site:

http://www.rpmhelp.net/

Where you can get the rar rpm for all relatively recent versions of
Mandrake, plus qmail rpms, plus a few other rpms that are hard to find
elsewhere.

Rar is one of the best compressor/archiver programs that there is.

[newbie] Burning cd with k3b

2004-04-06 Thread rhein
Hello,
Is there a help file for the K3b?
I checked on k3b website and nothing.
In the help menu from K3b I have nothing...no handbook.
In fact I try to copy an audio cd on a dvd/rw combo driver and I don't
really know what to do.
I wanted first to copy the files to a music directory on my computer and
then burn from there the cd. In fact I can not see the MP3 files in
Konqueror... Strange but I can play the files in Kaffeine for example.
I put an other cd with MP3 files in the driver and I can see them in
Konqueror... :-(
By the way is there a solution to burn strait from the original cd to a
new cd without making a manual copy to my HD?
I use K3b 0.9 who came with MDK 9,2.
Thank you
Christophe

Just to clarify. 975 is the installed space, not the amount
of MB's d/l'd. Depending on compression of the various rpms, the
d/l amount was probly about 40% of 975mb's, or less than 400 mb's
Since those rpms replaced already installed packages, the net
change in disk space used was probly little to nothin.

Have those of us who upgraded from devel/stable last night now moved to
cooker, or are we still on the (maybe) evolving CE?

If I read correctly, Mandrake is planning a rock solid Official 10 release, a
continually evolving 10(.x?) CE release with major and minor stable updates
moved over from cooker, and a bleeding-edge cooker (10.1?) release.

Am I even close to understanding this correctly?

With any major updates, it's often neccessary to log out of
KDE (or whatever), then Ctrl+Alt+BkSp to force an X restart, then
log back into KDE. Most times I run this alias (as root) before
logging out

alias upall='rpm --rebuilddb && updatedb && update-menus -n &&
ldconfig'

So far nobody's reported (cooker list) KDE failure. I found I
needed to use several cooker mirrors simultaneously to get all
the required Gnome update files.

Another trick when some files are missing on the mirrors is
to run 'urpmc' to see all available updates. Then install those
which don't have missing files (deps). You're KDE problem smacks
of incomplete or mismatched package updates. You didn't use
--auto or --allow-force, did you?

3.2.1 is higher than 3.2. The -3mdk and the -29mdk refers to the package

You are now running cooker, not 10CE plus updates. The mirrors are in the
process of forking 10.0CE off of cooker, so you should be seeing a big change
in the mirror structure that will require you to change your urpmi sources.

No, you are fine if you are getting your updates from 'stable'.

The 1's Chuck used were from straight 'cooker' and not from 'stable',
that is why his 'release' has now changed to 10.1.

These updates showed up in mandrake-devel/stable/. This is the Mandrake
recommended location for 10CE updates.

Did the updates for mandrake-devel/cooker/ appear in mandrake-devel/stable/
also?

Is this a mistake, or am I missing something here? Shouldn't the updates have

I'm assuming you're talking about shoutcast (or similar mp3 based)
streams?

In XMMS:
Options->preferences then in the input plugins box select "MPEG Layer
1/2/3 Player 1.2.8 [libmpg123.so]" then click configure. In the box that
comes up select the "streaming" tab. At the bottom of the tab there is a
section titled "SHOUT/Icecast". This is where you want to select the
"Enable title streaming" option.

The reason this is disabled by default is because of a bug where there
would be disruptions to the audio playback. As I remember it some sort
of popping/hissing? Anyway I think that bug was fixed a while back.
Works for me...

Let us know how you get on,

A.

[newbie] Installing PCI cards

2004-04-06 Thread Tony S. Sykes
Does anybody have any good links for doing this in the simplest way. I know basic
Linux, but need to hit the ground running with these cards. I have installed them into
the box and lspci see's them but there are no tty's in /dev. I understand that I need
to create the tty's and set them up with information which I think I have got using a
few other commands. I just need a good how-to to hold my hand through it.

Thanks,

Tony.

p.s. Mandrake 9.1 if that helps.

RE: [newbie] Belkin f5d6020 v2 pcmicia wifi card

2004-04-06 Thread Oliver Marshall
The card powers up, and "cardctl ident" shows the card correctly, but
ifconfig doesn't show anything for it, and nothing appears in the
hardware applet.

I downlaoded the atmel driver for it, a file with the extension .o but
the instructions didn't tell me where to copy the driver file. It told
me what changes needed to be made to the various conf files, but not
where to put the driver for it to load.

Hi. Have you tried googling for "linux wireless howto" or something like
that?
I picked up lots of useful info when I was trying to get a Dlink DWL 650
working (never did, BTW, finally switched to a Zyair B100 and it was
almost automatic).

Just out of curiosity (can't help myself), is the card being recognized?
Do you get a beep (power light on) and a few seconds later a 2nd beep
(card and network finding each other). How about under MCC and the KDE
control center, does the card show up? What does ifconfig show? Have you
looked at /etc/modules.conf to see if things are being loaded?

Just some thoughts...

Thanks for the reply. I understand completely about the cooker updates! I'll
continue tooling around a bit. I tried a couple of things but niether has quite
seemed to work as well in 10 CE as it did in 9.2. (Using the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels).
I'm sure it'll work out sooner or later in 10. Perhaps with 10.1 or 10.2. I usually
skip .0 versions but I was excited about the 2.6 kernel :-D

[newbie] Python Dependency Hell

2004-04-06 Thread Job Evers
I tried to build a package from source (since I could not find an rpms for pypanel)
and it said I needed python-Xlib. Mandrake doesn't have a python-Xlib package but I
found one online.

$ urpmi python-Xlib-0.12-2.noarch.rpm
Some package requested cannot be installed:
python-Xlib-0.12-2.noarch (due to unsatisfied python-modules[< 1:2.4])

How or where do I get python-modules? and what does [< 1:2.4] mean?!

I agree.. it should still install even if you get the contrib error.
I answered the contrib error problem in a previous thread but maybe it's worth
repeating.

as root:

rm /var/lib/urpmi/list.contrib

will stop those error messages without interfering with package installation at all.

Jerry.
