Assuming that it works like the ones available from Netraverse, it will
add a kernel, and your existing one will remain available. The
required kernel version must be installed first, though.

 The discription of the
kernel-win4lin-i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.7mdk-3-8mdk RPM for i586 says that
it requires kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.7mdk. I am running ML 10.0
community download edition that first came out a month ago. I am
running kernel 2.6.3-4mdk if I update to the new 10.0 final that
just came out will it have the i686-up-4GB-2.6.3.7mdk kernel allready
 installed?

Sorry for asking so many questions in 1 message but upgrading
kernels scares the hell outta me.

And rightly so, I think. Don't upgrade kernels, just install another
one. Lilo will gain another stanza, and both versions will be
available. It's easy, and must be foolproof - I've never met any
problems, and if there were any, I'd find them g

Ain't 10.0C supported any more?
I tried several mirrors so it couldn't be one
particular mirror problem.
Is this cause of official 10.0 release?
Can one download official 10.0 somewhere?

Thanks

In order to define sources, including updates, you can go here :

It is recommended to clear your previous sources first, by

Did you get a curl error? that's what I have been getting.
I don't know about downloading Mandrake 10.0 Official, but, you can buy the
Official Power Pack edition (5 CD's) for about $10.00 Us at:

http://www.almostfreelinux.com

This is how I got my current Mandrake 10.0 Community and it installed without
any problems. I am very happy with it. I bought the Official 10.0 from Almost
Free Linux yesterday and they shipped it the same day. I should have it
arriving in the mail Monday or Tuesday - or thereabouts. I would look into
downloading it, but I have dial-up and I don't feel like taking a chance on
having a 20+ hour download broken ;)

Re: [newbie] soundcard woes

Hi, Rory. I'm not expert, but here are some thoughts:

I can't get sound activated since loading MDK 10.0. Here's the odd
thing: the MandrakeMove LiveCD (9.3) always triggers sound, which I
 verified once again, yesterday.

This seems to mean a configuration problem, since the card is obviously
OK.

Here's an even odder thing: MandrakeMove and MDK 10.0 appear to both
recognize my soundcard identically in Control Centre. I've also
unplugged soundcard completely and re-inserted it in hopes it would
be recognized the second time, but no luck.

Again, suggesting configuration.

 Here's some basic info:
 Creative Soundblaster PCI 128
default driver: OSS1371 **which works on MDKMove but not on 10.0**
alternate driver: ALSA snd-ens 1371 **I've tried this but it didn't
 work**

I also tried the debugging options (I'm doing my best to be
self-reliant when solving Linux problems) available under Hardware in
Control Centre. Below is the ouput:

 root@ - lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO
 es1371 : Creative Labs|Sound Blaster AudioPCI64V AudioPCI128
 MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO (vendor:1274 device:1371 subv:1274 subd:8001)
 root@ - grep sound-slot etc modules.conf *NO RESPONSE-OUTPUT*
 root - grep sound-slot etc modules.conf *NO RESPONSE-OUTPUT*

Does HardDrake say that it is using the es1371 driver? I had a card
like that in one box, and it didn't work with the SB driver, but was
fine with the es1371 driver - mind, that was not 10, but still

root@ - sbin chkconfig --list sound
 sound 0-off 1-off 2-on 3-on 4-on 5-on 6-off *0,1,6 OFF???*

That's normal. It's on for 3 (text mode) and 5 (normal gui mode) - I'm
not sure what 4 is.

root@ - sbin chkconfig --list alsa
 alsa 0-off 1-off 2-on 3-on 4-on 5-on 6-off *Again 0,1,6 OFF???*

 root@ - aumix -q
bash: aumix: command not found *NO RESPONSE/OUTPUT*

Is aumix installed? If not, install it, and check carefully. Aumix
causes or cures (not sure which g)a lot of problems.

SuperKaramba... Now there's an idea. Problem is,
looks like you need to learn the Python language
before you can create any widgets. Secondly, I'm not
sure if Superkaramba supports text input. It seems
more like a disply device than something that would
take text input. Or am I wrong here?

The Eterm suggestions are nice, but I'm talking more
than changing backgrounds, using a colored font, or
using a transparant background. Stephen, you might be
right using it for changing color. If I learned bash
scripting, perhaps I could set a color change for each
character. Somthing like start at bright orange,
after one second change to a darker orange, then
repeat until it stops at red.

Shocks me that nothing like this is out there already.
Looks like if it doesn't exist I'll have to learn
some type of language - either Python for SuperKaramba
or advanced bash scripting...

Any other comments out there? Maybe I should hit up
the expert list out there...

Re: [newbie] updates

2004-04-16 Thread Frank

If you use urpmi.removemedia you will loose access to your CD's for those things you have not installed yet when attempting to use urpmi.

I suggest you go to www.urpmi.org and read more about urpmi and in particular, how to remove specific media you no longer wish to have.

You can determine what media you have by viewing /etc/urpmi/urpmi.conf

Know also that with a little renaming of your media you can have extra sites listed for simular media.

Enjoy

I'd really like to hammer out this sound issue, as I can't watch
video/movies or listen to music without it.

   Here's some basic info:
   Creative Soundblaster PCI 128
default driver: OSS1371 **which works on MDKMove but not on 10.0**
alternate driver: ALSA snd-ens 1371 **I've tried this but it didn't
   work**

I also tried the debugging options (I'm doing my best to be self-reliant
when solving Linux problems) available under Hardware in Control Centre.
   Below is the ouput:

   Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions, Anne.

Does HardDrake say that it is using the es1371 driver? I had a card
like that in one box, and it didn't work with the SB driver, but was
fine with the es1371 driver - mind, that was not 10, but still

Yes, Harddrake says it's using the driver:
Vendor: Creative Labs
Alternative drivers: snd-ens1371
Bus: PCI
Bus identification: 1274:1371:1274:8001
Location on the bus: 0:a:0
Description: Sound Blaster AudioPCI64V/AudioPCI128

Media class: MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO

Is aumix installed? If not, install it, and check carefully. Aumix
causes or cures (not sure which g)a lot of problems.

No, aumix wasn't installed by default. Just installed it now. Still, no
luck.

Well, it could simply be that I'm running MDK on an older computer. I've
never had this volume of issues installing any OS before. But, I must say,
MDKMove seemed to have a better handle on things.

By the way, I believe there are some acknowledged issues with the 2.6 kernal
when it comes to ADSL that they've been sorting out during the last couple of
revisions.

Last week I had a similar problem after an upgrade. My ADSLPPPoE settings

The only way I've been able to get it to hold, since, is to choose
CableDHCP. Oddly, it works on my ADSL line and oddly the settings hold on
reboot. So, I'm not mucking with it.

Between that issue, my soundcard and being unable to activate my network
printer, not to mention losing mouse control on start-up a couple of times,
MDK 10.0 really isn't ready for prime time yet for newbies switching over
from MS. It also needs to automatically install flash-compatible plug-ins,
java for internet sites and mplayer macromedia plug-ins so internet use is
fully functional on install. Installing after the fact just isn't fluid
enough yet to not sort these things out beforehand. And automatically
doing permanent mounts for your LAN on install would also be useful. If
that means adding a couple of options on install, so people who don't want
these things can avoid them, that's fine.

If that's not its target market for this product, then that's fine. But,
it appears to be sending all the signals that it wants to be that type of
product. And for the sake of marketshare, it needs to be.

It appears MDK needs a couple of more cycles before these very basic and
fundamental hardware and software configurations become routine on install.
 I hope it's a priority.

That said, I love MDK, I've learned a tremendous amount in a few weeks, I
have high regard for its open development approach. It's a good product
 and I'm sticking with it!

 Rory

For what it is worth this is definatly a issue that seems to only affect
upgrades. I just did a clean install in a seperate hard drive on the same
machine and everything works perfect Not that I am a expert but 10.0 is
definatly by far the best linux release that I have ever seen although it
looks like I will have to back up some files and then do a clean install to
get my ADSL working right. Oh well upgrades always are a bit risky.

[newbie] Backing up files.

2004-04-16 Thread Marc
Well my upgrade to ML 10.0 official was not a total success. It looks like I
will have to do a clean installation from scratch.

I would like to do this clean installation without lozeing to much stuff,
espicially bookmarks in opera, emails in kmail and contact list in kmail. It
seems like every time I try this I have problems with those things.

I would be thankful for any advice on what to back up or any tips on how to
make this as painless as possible.

TIA

[newbie] Yet another mdk 10.0 sound problem

2004-04-16 Thread Mike Adolf
Everyone must be sick of posts about 10.0 sound problems, so here's another
one.

I upgraded from 9.1, where all forms of sound worked great, CD, DVD, mp3,
startup and shutdown ... My card is cs4236b. On 9.1 everything only worked
with driver cs4232 (don't ask me why).

Now on 10.0, the default cs46xx, cs4232 and all other cs drivers, except
cs4236, can not find the sound card. snd-cs4236 is the only driver that
allows me to run aumix (it is not muted) and kmix. Nothing works except
ksCD, and somebody wrote that it's because it cabled (but it won't work with
any other dirver).

I did most every thing I read on the newbie list to try to get sound working,
including alsaconf, which always stated that it is configuring cs46xx driver.
I think I have all the alsa modules, including alsa-util.

It is very discouraging when upgrading an OS (I did install with existing
partitions) to have things that use to work, not work! There has to be
something wrong with linux and sound or mandrake and sound. It just should
not be this difficult!

When is 11.0 coming out?

Mike

Marc, I use backerupper it will backup whatever you want into a .zip file
and put it where ever you want. I regularly backup my entire $HOME
partition as well as me /etc to another drive then write to a cd. If you
want I'll send it over.

Ahh, very interesting. This is *exactly* the same pattern I have. Something
definitely broke between 9.x and 10.0.

Absolutely. The help of people on these forums has been most impressive,
though. I've search MDK Bugzilla and haven't really found a bug filed that
fits this problem, so it may not be seen by the developers as a priority.
