How many users do you have on your box? Issue ls -al in /dev/sound
to see who owns the files in that directory. I had quite similar
problems with mdk 10.0. After logging into the box, a user own those
device files. However, those files are not released. So when the
next person logs into the system, those files are still owned by the
previous user, and the sound system does not work at all. I have to
log in as root and issue chmod 666 * in /dev/sound/ so that other can
read and write to those device files. I close the mixer and then
restart it. There is sound again. /dev/dsp is a soft link
 to /dev/sound/dsp.

 Subject: [newbie] Sound problem.
 Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2004 20:43:26 +

This has probably been answered before, but I can't find it in the
archives, on twiki or on Derek's site.

I have a program which needs to access the sound system for a
digital output. When I try to run it, I get the error messages:

Unable to open the audio device. /dev/sound/dsp

There is a /dev/sound/dsp and also a /dev/dsp (to which I have tried
changing the setting in the error box).

Starting it in a terminal, gives:

inexact sampling rate: request for 8000 resulted in 48000 Cannot
open audio device /dev/sound/dsp: Invalid argument

 I have tried changing
 System-Configuration-KDE-Sound-sound System-Hardware
to a custom sampling rate of 8000, but still the same error
 messages.

Until I upgrade the computer, it is on-board sound, not a sound
 card.

 Any advice, please?

 Many thanks

 Keith

Thanks for your help, carefree.

I do have analogue sound - well I did until a few days ago when my CD
drive packed up. A replacement is on the list.

There is only me uses the computer. My wife isn't interested in using
it.

Sorry, but I have done as you suggested and there are still the same
error messages. I have even tried running the program as root. No
difference. However, on starting the computer now, I get this
additional error message, titled Informational - artsmessage:

Sound server informational message.

Error while initializing the sound driver.

can't get requested samplingrate (requested rate 8000, got rate 48000)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Originally, ls -al showed that root owned everything in /dev/sound

Any further advice, please?

Cheers

Keith

Just browsing the TWiKi, and I found that the attachment on:

like to post it here, or update the attachment. The process looks
fairly easy - just hit the action link.

It looks like the page could do with a tutorial as well. I might get

Anyhow, what I want to know is what is the best way to recover data

running. Can I install it as a slave disk an access it through a new
Mandrake installation or perhaps a live CD distribution? Or are there
other ways?

I realise this isn't exactly a Mandrake specific topic but there is
more concentrated computer wisdom here than any other place I know so
I hope you can steer me right.

The method that you mention is perhaps the safest, ie. install it as a
slave disk, etc. I have done that sort of thing many times. As long as
you are methodical and logical, you should be OK. I have done this with
Redhat 5.2, SCO OpenServer, SCO UNIX 4.2, MS-Dog, and various versions
of Mandrake from version 7.1 up. Most recently I did it with Mandrake
10.1beta2. It is a good way of upgrading your system as well as a way of
recovering data from an ailing drive.

Once you have installed your new drive, simply run drakconf (diskdrake)
and set up the mount points and off you go!

Hi Guys,
First off, apologies for posting from a Windows box. I'm slowly
rebuilding a system after a major hardware catastrophe (see earlier post).

After looking at a few options for data recovery from a linux system, I
finally opted for the System Rescue CDROM at
http://www.sysresccd.org/download.en.php

Installed the hard disk as a slave and booted up from the CD.It worked a
treat when I finally figured out how to mount the partitions. Got
everything I couldn't do without and then some.

It may be a while before I get a new linux box up and running as I'm
pretty busy just now. But when I do, I shall be moving up from 9.2 to
10.1 Community.

I'm looking forward to it.

In my case, the solution was to:
1) Register to Mandrakeonline with a new login name (it was already
taken by someone else - hence your log in password was wrong in my case)
2) I was given a Mandrakeonline activation code by e-mail
3) After a login to my Mandrakeonline account with my web browser I went

use my Mandrakeonline service to this computer (for a month, because

First thing that comes to my mind is that somehow urpmi was unable to
read your CD. Please check if you are able to read content of this CD
(with Midnight Commander, for example - mc command - or ordinary ls
/mnt/cdrom). If you are able to and still somehow have problems with
urpmi, you can use rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-10mdk when you
are in RPM directory of your CD. That way you should be able to install
this particular package.
But keep in mind that you will propably want to update your system to
10.1 Official ASAP. To do that, add 10.1 Official media to your
repository lists (without 10.1 Official update, you'll add it *after*
you're done with moving to 10.1 Official). Google Easy URPMI to find a
web page that makes this easy. Now the latest kernel version for 10.1 is

So I have the program running using alsa in one distro, but not running
using alsa in another distro. Very odd.

Incidentally, selecting custom setting of the sampling rate in the
hardware section of KDE sound settings, kills the sound completely.
There are no system sounds.

That's as far as I have got.
Cheers

Try using the second of the pair of ports that are being created. In
other words, try /dev/USB5, instead of /dev/USB4. Or you can try using
/dev/pilot, and see if hotplug is setting things up right. On 9.2, the
symlink /dev/pilot is created when you press the hotsync button. I am not
sure about 10.x, but it is worth a try.

[newbie] Duplex printing hp deskjet 970cxi

2004-12-05 Thread mike
I have a Deskjet 970cxi printer with a with a two sided module
(looks like a double roller gadjet that fits on the back of the
printer).

I would like to be able to print on both sides of the paper for book
or tablet printing. I found the commands for printing using manual
loading of paper. But I would like to utilize the printers automatic
feed through the module. I have cups installed and printer works fine.

Does anyone have any experience with this printer or two sided printing?

Or point me in a direction to look?

I have been doing some searching and reading but not much luck yet.

Thanks
Mike

My Handspring Visor Edge works just fine with default configuration in 10.1,

How have you configured KPilot? I would suggest that you use the
default /dev/pilot. If you can't find /dev/pilot in the directory, don't
sweat it, as it is created on the fly by hotplug at sync.

All you should need to do is open Kpilot, and press your cradle button to
sync. Check for the note about not being able to find /dev/pilot before you
sync, that will tell you that the Kpilot daemon is running.

Which version of Mandrake 10.1 did you install? Community or Official?
If you installed Community version (which really could be called late
beta), you should:
1) Remove all media (urpmi.removemedia -a as root)
2) Add medium base to Mandrake 10.1 *Official*. Use Easy URPMI site's
instructions to do so.
3) Update every package (be patient) with urpmi --auto-select as root
(or MandrakeUpdate or RPMDrake with choosing view all applications,
according to their update availability or something to that effect).
4) And after that, install the latest kernel (2.8.1-12mdk); reboot with
a new kernel - now or later
5) Now after you have upgraded your Mandrake tools, the list of Mandrake
mirrors and their locations should work well; use MandrakeUpdate to
update all your software to the latest version
Your Mandrakeonline should be now working well, too - if you have paid
for the service and Mandrake's servers work well.
Keep in mind that Mandrakeonline works only with *Official* version.

Thanks.
I followed your suggestions:
first I made sure I was able to read the content of the CD,
just with 'ls /mnt/cdrom';
then from the directory
/mnt/cdrom/install/stage2/live/usr/lib/rpm
I did
# rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-10mdk
, but got the following message:
error: open of kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-10mdk failed: No such file or directory
. Any other hint?
Thanks again,

Oops!
My typo! You should use
rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-10mdk.rpm
instead or use Tab key to autofill the file name (in Bash).
I am sorry!

5)For installing rpc files do hotsync twicethe first time round they

7) This can all be done with InfraRed too but that's a new bag of fish;)

I have installed mdk 10.1 over a week ago and am unable to do auto
update or do software updates. The kicker bar icon shows red with a
question mark. If i click on it .It takes me to the configure wizard.
and when I put in my mandrakeonline usr and pasword it gives me your
log in password was wrong message. I can go to mandrakeonline with my
browser and log into my account and set up a profile, but there are no
machines registered.
If I go to the software updates (Configure my computer) and choose one
of the update servers I am unable to download the update list, on all
of the servers world wide. I can download stuff, just downloaded the
deb iso's and email so no problems with connecting to net in general,
just the mandrake update stuff.I have installed the Linux Format DVD
disk version.

I suggest you contact your Mandrakeonline service provider (that is,
Mandrakesoft or Mandrakesoft's reseller in your country; in my case it
was Amavis - and I am in Poland). They should give you a solution to
your problem.
In my case, the solution was to:
1) Register to Mandrakeonline with a new login name (it was already
taken by someone else - hence your log in password was wrong in my
case) 2) I was given a Mandrakeonline activation code by e-mail
3) After a login to my Mandrakeonline account with my web browser I went
to my hosts page and activated my host (computer). Now I was able to
use my Mandrakeonline service to this computer (for a month, because
that was what I got with a boxed version of Mandrake).
And until you solve your problem with Mandrakeonline service, you can
always use MandrakeUpdate without any payment. :) Updates there are as
quick as on Mandrakeonline servers.
I hope that will help you!

I am also kind of a newbie in Linux, but it seems to me that your
cdrom is not correctly configured/working under Linux, might be worth
checking that out if you're sure that VMWare should boot from CDrom
first.

I don't think VMWare boots from cdrom by default, go in the BIOS
settings when you turn on your VM (usually by pressing F2) and put the
CD on top of the list (usually by pressing +), save, exit, reboot.

I know when I set up my hp deskjet 6122, in order to get the duplex
printing, I had to go find a module/driver/whatever you call it made
specifically for the hp printers to get it to work duplex. Google is
your friend here.

I need to actually find it again, since I recently did a reinstall,
and haven't tried to reinstall the driver. If/when I deal with that
again, I'll give you links and/or names of what to look for. I do
remember having to install the module/driver/whatever from source, I
didn't find any nice happy rpms. But it wasn't hard, I managed to do
it without one of my friends hand holding me through the process,
because the site I found it on was very specific about how to do it.
^_^

Good luck.

On my cooker system I run CVS claws but on this, my 10.1 system I either
run the stock Mdk rpm Or the 10.1 rpm available from my site, in this
instance, since I have uploaded no update, it is the 10.1a claws I am
running.

I have no doubt you are suffering the problem which you detailed but the
same is not exhibited or reproducible here.

Can you launch claws from a term and then post the output relevant to
the crash.

  Derek,

I just bought a slightly newer computer (PIII-533), and it happens to
have a video card that NVidia claims is supported by their latest driver,
a Riva TNT2 64, so I decided to try the nvidia driver. I have been
using the nv driver, which works fine except for lack of 3D

I downloaded the latest driver from the NVidia site. This is 1.0-6629,
whereas your page refers to 1.0-6111. But I followed your instructions
anyway, in case the bug you mentioned was still there. But in
usr/src/nv/nv.c, it appears that PM_SAVE_STATE has already been changed
to PM_SUSPEND_MEM (I can find the latter string but not the former), so I
  guess the bug is fixed.

It compiled and installed without any errors. Only a warning about the
kernel being built with rivafb as a module, and that this module
  conflicts with

Thanks for that info Ron. I'll retire that page now the info is out of
 date.

Hmm.. I tried out the new 6629 version of the Nvidia driver today.
It compiles OK, but when it starts the splash screen does not go away. I had
to revert to the 6111 driver again.
