Hey Mike, you guessed correctly. This is the way the program works.
Supposedly you should still have access to the original message before
it was encrypted.

[newbie] Configuring default firewall

2005-01-16 Thread Paul Smith
Dear All

I am using the default firewall of Mandrake 10.1 and I would like to
configure it in the following way:

* It must allow an outbound (originating at the host and connecting to the
server) a TCP/IP connection with destination port 1723.

* It must also allow protocol 47 (known as GRE) both inbound and outbound,
with the server. There are no port numbers involved; it must be
protocol 47.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

PS: Since I am a GMail user, please be sure that you reply to the list.

[newbie] partition

2005-01-16 Thread Martin Hardie
Hi

other than my unasnwered kword problem ... what is the ebst way to resize a
partition and make another one?

I have parted and started it up and got this message:

(snip: GPL junk)

Using /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
Error: The partition table on /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc is
inconsistent. There are many reasons why this might be the case. However,
the
most likely reason is that Linux detected the BIOS geometry for
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc incorrectly. GNU Parted suspects the
real
geometry should be 4870/255/63 (not 77622/16/63). You should check with your
BIOS first, as this may not be correct. You can inform Linux by adding the
parameter ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc=4870,255,63 to the command line.
See
the LILO or GRUB documentation for more information. If you think Parted's
suggested geometry is correct, you may select Ignore to continue (and fix
Linux
later). Otherwise, select Cancel (and fix Linux and/or the BIOS now).
Ignore/Cancel?

is using parted the best way or is there a simple safe alternative?

Martin,
You can use MCC to setup your partitions. Open up Mandrake Control
Center, Mount Points, Partitions - and adjust to your needs. I've
even used it to setup fat32 partitions so as to install that
other less-than-desirable O.S. (after installing MD first) - but
that isn't for the faint at heart - especially in that order.

do you have a plf source defined in your URPMI setups?
if not, you will need to search google for easy urpmi and then carefully read
and follow the instructions on the first link the search offers..
once you have a plf source defined, just (as root, in a text console, with out
the quotes,) type urpmi libdvdcss2

Hey Mike, you guessed correctly. This is the way the program works.
Supposedly you should still have access to the original message

Thanks Charles,

No, not yet. Part of the problem with kde apps is that the kde team decided
recently to split things into more manageable chunks. It seems that one
consequence is that sometimes you don't get everything you need, because it
seems to assume that you will have it from another part of kde - maybe I'm
wrong, but that's how it seems to me.

Before you give up on this install, go into SoftwareInstaller and browse all
files starting with k selecting any that look as though they have any
interest for you. Some have obvious names like kdecore or kdebase or some
such, but others are not obviously going to give you libs, yet they may well.
Sit back while they install, and see if that makes any difference.

[newbie] postgresql problems

2005-01-16 Thread JR
I'm trying to install Cubit which requires postgresql. But I keep getting this
error:
psql: FATAL: IDENT authentication failed for user pguser

when I type
  psql -U pguser

I've googled on the error and made changes to pg_ident.conf and pg_hba.conf as
suggested but I still get the error, even thought I restarted the service.

I also followed this howto:
HOWTO use the PostgreSQL server in few steps
by Christian Belisle [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This file is included with the Mandrake PostgreSQL's packages.

After you installed the packages, here is the procedure to
start quickly but nicely.

1- Become root user on your machine. (su)
2- Become postgres user. (su postgres)
3- Create a user (createuser)
4- Be sure that the postmaster is running (service postgresql status)
5- Logout from the postgres and the root account.
6- Test it. (psql -U [username])

I'm actually surprised at how difficult this is to setup. Or more accurately,
I'm surprised at how hard it is to get the info.

Thanks folks,

Jarlath

[newbie] oooqs and GNOME - for information only

2005-01-16 Thread Len Lawrence
Under GNOME and Mandrake 9.2 I have managed to get OpenOffice to start up in
3 or 4 seconds, which is fine. But, out of curiosity I installed oooqs from the
PowerPack DVD and invoked it. The first problem was that it started
kbuildsycoca,
which always takes time and usually spits out a dozen error messages, so it is
obviously designed for KDE. The second problem was that it hung after reporting
several KIO connection errors, which probably means that it is incompatible with
GNOME anyway. This is the first time I have ever hit such an obstacle. I
wondered if there were any other KDE applications which fail under GNOME.

Has anyone tried this app yet? If so, were there any problems?

Desktop Environment :: K Desktop Environment (KDE)
System :: Installation/Setup

About: Konstruct is a build system which helps you install KDE releases
and applications on your system. It downloads defined source tarballs,
checks their integrity, decompresses, patches, configures, builds, and
installs them. A complete KDE installation should be as easy as cd
meta/kde;make install. Optionally, you can install additional
applications like KOffice, KDevelop, or Quanta (for example, cd
apps/koffice;make install).

Changes: The unstable version now installs KDE 3.4 Beta 1. All included
packages were updated to their latest versions.

Dumb question time...
1: By USB to PS2 adapter, do you mean one of the adapters that come with
some mice to let you plug a USB/PS2 mouse in a PS2 poet, or an adapterer
that gives you a PS2 port on a USB connection?

2: If you are plugging into a PS2 port, did the adpater come with the
mouse, or is it from a different mouse?

3: Has the mouse ever worked with this setup?
The reasion I ask is that the adapters that let you plug a USB mouse
into a PS2 port only work with mice designed to be used that way. From
what I understand, they just connect the PS2 power and data connections
to the power and data lines on the USB connector, and don't do anything
else. So if your mouse doesn't know how to talk to a PS2 port, and send
information like a PS2 mouse instead of a USB mouse, it will not work.

[newbie] USB external hard drive

2005-01-16 Thread Owen Berio
I have tried several times to get Mandrake version 10.1 to recognize my
external USB ( Maxtor Diamond Max) hard drive. If I turn it on before
or during bootup it seems to freeze the booting process. It is not
recognized. Actually listed hardware states it is a unknown device. If
I turn it on after booting it has a red pilot light.
I have even removed the drive from the case and booting without the
drive gives a green pilot light but the device is not recognized in the
hardware list. The case does not have any jumpers to change but the hard
drive does. Could the problem reside here?
The box recognizes my USB mouse and printer automatically.
Any suggestions/
Owen

Sorry for my ambiguity.

1: By USB to PS2 adapter, do you mean one of the adapters that come with
some mice to let you plug a USB/PS2 mouse in a PS2 poet, or an adapterer
that gives you a PS2 port on a USB connection?

The mouse interface is USB. Adapter is so I can plug it into a PS2
port.

2: If you are plugging into a PS2 port, did the adpater come with the
mouse, or is it from a different mouse?

It's an adapter that came with the Microsoft mouse. In fact, all USB
mice that I've purchased from MS come with this teal colored USB--PS2
adapter.

3: Has the mouse ever worked with this setup?

Come to think of it, this is the basic MS Wireless Optical Mouse. I've
used the adapter on other models. I use others on a KVM that only has
PS2 and it works with no issues. You make a good point. I shouldn't
assume this mouse works in a similar manner.

But you don't have an audigy. Shouldn't this be snd-emu10k1, like this

 alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1

and this should not be there

 alias snd-0 snd-emu10k1

Also, there are tow install and remove entries. There should only be one of
each.

This is what I think the lines in modrobe.conf should look like based on my
working system that uses snd-cmipci. You have two sets of entries and it is
asking for two different things.

alias sound-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-emu10k1
 { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
remove snd-emu10k1 { /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; } ; /sbin/modprobe -r
--first-time --ignore-remove snd-emu10k1

OpenOffice.org Quickstarter is a small application that runs in the KDE

So this is a KDE stuff .

I use a iOne Lynk mark 7 plugged into a KVM switch and it seems to work for

the USB reciever and within 5 seconds press the button on the bottom of the
