 Hello all,

Please forgive this basic question, I couldn't find the minimum
requirements for MD 10.1 anywhere. the worst part is I'm actually
 running 10.1 on this pc.

 Also,

Where can i find earlier versions of Mandrake Linux suitable to work on
 a Pentium 233 with 80 MB ram.

Its for my mother, who wants to have a go on the Internet, I set her
up with my old pc as above running XP but its infected with spy ware
after only 2 days from a clean install, Mum forgot to start zonealarm
 before she went online.

 Tim

I have Mandrake 9.1 running on a Penntium 200 with 64Mb Ram. It's a little
sluggish running KDE but I'm sure one of the lighter window managers would
work pretty quick.

Check your KVM switch. Many KVM switches have a key combination to put it
in
auto scan mode, which allows you to cycle through each PC with a delay
which you can usually set. It sounds like you might have inadvertently
found
the key combination needed for that...

I also have a KVM switch. I use CTRL CTRL F2 to switch between computers.
CTRL CTRL F1 sets auto scan and it switches every 4 seconds for me too.

To switch off auto-scan, I just have to hit CTRL CTRL

Well if you already have an internet connection that's up to par for a
server (As in it's high-speed and your ISP allows servers), and you
already have a box lying around (You'd only need a high-end server for
extremely trafficed HTTP sites, or maybe things like ASP pages), than I
would say setting up your own server would be ideal. Just grabbing an
old Pentium II or whatever, plopping a default mandrake install on it
with apache, and plugging your web site into /var/www/html is about all
it takes :-). Registering a .com address would probably costyou about
 $15 a year, as opposed to $50 (At a better-than-average deal) a year for
a basic web hosting package from an ad-free web-service provider (Like
me). Alternatively you can get a www.[yourname].cjb.net subdomain from
cjb or a similar organization for free, though if I remember there's on
occasional popup for IE users (Which makes up roughly 2/3 of browser
 users and falling).

Anyway, that's my yammer for the evening,

[newbie] wget / download managers

Hi all

Can anybody recommend a good download manager?

or can anybody tell me what i'm doing wrong with wget?

I've been using wget, but on dialup it doesnt seem to work to well.

It's fine as long as I stay connected, if there are any errors at the other
end or it loses itself, it resumes great.

But I just had to disconnect to use my phone, and when I reconnected wget did
nothing.

So I stopped it by using ctrl-c and started again...wget url

and instead of resuming, it started again from the beginning.

I suspect, based on my own experience with a dodgy DSL router (until I
figured out what the problem was) that wget is pretty network aware. If
you disconnect and then redial the connection, you are getting a new IP
address and wget does not make the connection between the old file request
and the new IP address. So, it basically just sits there waiting for the
old connection to start back up. If you got the exact same IP address,
wget might resume the transfer. I say might because it is possible that
the server you are pulling from will time out the connection and then I
don't think that wget can restart it without making a brand new request.

So I stopped it by using ctrl-c and started again...wget url

and instead of resuming, it started again from the beginning.

If you Ctrl-c, you may be interrupting the shell command but wget itself is
probably happily running along in the background waiting for the transfer
to start backup. You should try to issue a killall wget to make sure that
all active connections are killed before you try to restart the transfer.
I usually run wget from a shell script with all my command options included
by default, so that may just be me.

Then, run wget with a -c (for continue) on the command line and it will
resume partial downloads instead of restarting them.

By default, it does not overwrite files but will resume if you tell it you
want it to. Note, if you have a lot of sudden stops and starts, it is
possible for things to get corrupted and for the resume to either not work
or actually corrupt the file, only happened to me once when I was doing a
lot of background maintenance including messing with the internet
 connection but it did happen.

if you have already attempted to put it on /dev/hda1 or the MBR and

Where are you trying to put the bootloader?

Always give as much information as possible. But this might well be a raid

2002-02-01 Thread Hanan Z. AL-Shargi

Thank you Michel,

I downloaded star office in binary format from Sun's website, and as you
said installing it was as easy as clicking on a .exe

But since this was brought up, would any of the list gurus please kindly post
a short list clearifying how do u know how to install the diffirent types of
files ?

I mean something like a small list :
- file.rpm will be installed by the rpm - option command
- file.bin with bla bla command
- when to use the ./ , when do u need to chmod the file before u install
...etc

Many thanks in advance to any volunteer :-)

But really, installing either OpenOffice or StarOffice from the
installation binary is about as hard as clicking on install.exe in a
windows system. You should not need to install either from source.

 1. go to www.openoffice.org

 2. follow instructions there to download install641_linux_intel.tar.gz

2a. Go make several cups of coffee - this is a big file!

 3. Open a terminal and use cd to go to the directory where you downloaded
 the file , for example
 cd /home/a_user/downloads ENTER

 4. untar and gunzip the file (use the winzip-like kab application if you
 like, otherwise just use
 tar -xvzf install641_linux_intel.tar.gz ENTER
from the command line, without the quotes of course). A directory called
install with lots of files in it will be formed. cd to it:
 cd install ENTER

 5 Now run the command
 ./setup ENTER

 6. Follow the on-screen instructions

 Go in to /etc/rc.d/init.d/

 and edit the file "halt"

at the very bottom line, remove the "-p", so that the line ends up looking like
 this:

 eval $command -i -d

That should do it. You'll wind up with text at halt or shutdown that says

Here's a quick rule of thumb, don't install every
package, especially ones that you don't know or
specifically need, you could be creating security
holes.

Go look around for security documents, it'll show you
things that you need and don't need. Also,
mandrake7.1 (and 7.2) has a security level feature in
in drakconf, set it to maximum.

Good luck buddie, I have a problem with my Adaptec 2940UW also, the only
thing I gotten from anybody on ANY message boards, forum or newsgroup is a
song and a dance. One gentleman suggested I change SCSI controllers, I'm
took a different route I'm downloading Redhat 7 as we speak. It's funny that
version 7.0 worked soemone tweaked the kernel or something I think to add
'raid' capabilities and the problems started. I thought Mandrake would be
the best distributions but (as I noted before) I'm looking at others. I
admin SCO Unix boxes at work and they have less general functionality than
linux for the most part but at least they do work with Adaptec controllers.
In Mandrake's defense Adaptec does not support the Linux community. But not
many people are going to ditch hundreds of dollars worth of equipment are
they?
Let me know if find out something.

Oh by the way on the Mandrake website (trouble shooting for Mandrake 7.1 I
think) there's a 'special' cdrom.img file that includes support for the
aic7xxx controller family. It might work for you.

RE: [newbie] Upgrading kernel

2000-07-10 Thread Wilson, Al

Thank you, Charles.

I will have to wait till I get home to get the exact errors. The problem was
that the system would not boot. An entry had been added in the Grub list for
the new kernel, but when selected, booting would stop at some point along
the way. I was not able to boot from the rescue diskette, either. That is
why I re-installed. As I said, I will try upgrading tonight and see what
happens. Maybe I should learn to do it the proper way!

One interesting thing that I noticed on the last re-installation was that
part of the installation of the security programs actually worked. All the
other times, it would fail saying that it could not connect. This time, it
seems that most of the programs installed. The two openssh programs failed
due to some error reported by Mandrake.

Where are the RPMs stored? Are they added to the existing RPMs on my drive?

So many questions; so few answers.

Thank you,
Al Wilson

Re: [[newbie] Installing tar.gz files]

2000-02-21 Thread Al D

to install a tar.gz file simply give the command in an e-term tar zxvf and
this will extract the directory and then once this is done then look for a
something called configure and run that in root. remeber you must type the
absolute path like /home/star/program name/configure and then if there are no
errors run gmake and if no errors pop up there run make install and then run
make clean and keep the directory because if you need to uninstall a program
just go to that directory and type make uninstall
