[newbie] MySQL users DB corrupted
I have a small problem where a power outage has corrupted the user database for mysql, now no users can authenticate/manipulate any databases hosted by the MySQL Engine... This is rather annoying since I am no longer able to administer the databases, and I appear to be unable to modify, or create users all together. The engine is running, and the availability of data is still there, but in a read only manner. I can pull data out, but unless I can authenticate, I cant enter any in! How can I fix this? Almost all of the admin tools I have found will not work without logging in. If there is no other solution, is it possible to import the existing database I have (used for inventory purposes) into a fresh mysql install? I cant export anything, and the database files are basically flat files at this point... A good web resource would also be appreciated! any help would be appreciated. RE: [newbie] APC BackUPS 500
Speaking of APC BackUPS, I have a 650 BackUPS Pro, with serial status reporting. How can I integrate the Smart portion into linux? I would love to know how to set it up so that when there's only a couple of minutes left of power, begin the shutdown sequence, and if power is restored, cancel the shutdown... I know there is software out there that does this, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (GkrellM support for this would be awesome as well!!) RE: [newbie] Kernel Panic on boot from Install CD on Athlon
Also, what video card is being used? What happens when you attempt an install in text mode? It would seem that if the problem continues across multiple distros, then hardware would be the first place I would start looking. Try a different video card. Also, you may want to look into the possibility of a bad install CD, I had a similar problem installing MDK 8.2, and then burned another copy and it worked flawless... a lot of research, time and effort was wasted on that one. RE: [newbie] package downloads need conversion?
Just so you know, I don’t believe that the DHCPD is what you need if you are trying to configure it as a client. Dhcpd is the daemon which provides the service to others. If you are not trying to make a dhcp server, I wouldn’t recommend that you install this package. If you go into linuxconf > network settings > defaults, and remove EVERYTHING (ip settings, gateways, dns, etc.) except the driver for your network card, and then choose the option of DHCP or (automatically configure) this should work… it is mandatory that there be absolutely no ip’s of any kind entered for the eth0 device… give that a whirl I say! RE: Well OT: Re: [newbie] Hahaha, did you see?
I have worked with MCSE's on and off for about 5 years now, and why is it that me, being a 23 year old has far greater knowledge with regards to computers, network administration, implementation concepts, etc. etc. than ANYONE I have ever worked with who holds the MCSE title? I worked with this one guy, who was getting paid just over 2x the salary that I was making who had no idea of what an IRQ is, why they are needed, why most devices needed their own. He had spent nearly a week at a client's site, billing that client for his time there, just to get a 3rd network card installed onto an NT4.0 box, until that Friday, I visit the site to see if he needed a hand. I offer my help, and his response was "what do you know? "Youre just a kid". I neglected to answer that, and proceeded to change the conflicting IRQ to one that was available. 3 minutes is what it took for me to solve a problem that a guy with a $15000 "education" couldn't do in a week. The bill worked out to a little over $3000 to the client for "a dumb kid" to configure a NIC in 3 minutes... is this the kind of service that's good for business? His entire lifestyle (wage, ie new car, decent house etc.) was based upon a title, not the product of his efforts. I'm sorry to all you out there that ARE MCSE's... I'm sorry that you had to spend so much money to be mocked by someone like me who can literally run circles around your knowledge of computers (There ARE some who actually do know a lot about computers, but I can guarantee that the knowledge you possess did not come from any of Microsoft's training regimes). What do you do when windows doesn't start? Is "re-install" the only solution there is? I ask those of you who ARE MCSE's this: In a production environment, is it acceptable for a reboot to be required on your server when you install an upgrade (aka. Service pack), change an ip, or create/delete partitions on drives? Is uptime #1 on your priority list? Is money for licensing costs an endless resource? What about Security/privacy, would you like your server formatted one night because the manufacturer of your product didn't worry about getting it right the first time, and just said "let's release it, and we can fix it later with 54 hotfixes and service packs"? Do you like the fact that any sort of "Customization" to the operating system itself will either get you sued or imprisioned? Have you ever wondered WHY Microsoft OS'es have such a bad reputation? If you ever actually use another OS, you will see what it is that creates this opinion. Try it! And you wont even have to pay anything to do so... The problem here is that you have become cattle... follow what everyone else wants, don't think for yourself, don't ask yourself what you will really achieve, or how you will really benefit the company you work for. I have been hired as part of the IT staff, and none of us have had ANY official Microsoft training of any kind. In the interview I was asked what my training level was. My response was "None, officially", then he asked if I would like to get my MCSE in the future, and I said a lot of what's in this post. Now I'm here. RE: [newbie] run windows executable in Linux ...
Silly Goose! Just because Linux is open source does not mean that the programming body cant charge a fee for software that runs on linux. Linux itself is GPL but you are able to write software for linux and then charge a fee for it, but under the GPL, the source must be included as well. Now I'm not entirely sure if any or all of these are GPL'ed or not, but remember! The term "open source" doesn't say "free of cost", it says "free to look at, modify, or change" there are many open source programs out there that charge a fee for the software/media it is distributed on such as mandrake itself! Actually read the license agreement that comes on disk 3 of the mandrake 8.2 distribution. Some of the software on this disc is not GPL'ed at all! But yet is still free to download from mandrake... Kinda the opposite here! Free software, not open source! Besides, think about what sorts of abilities these programs provide and try to tell me that they are not priced fairly. If Microsoft had software like Vmware, how much do you think the licence would cost you? Would it be released under the GPL? We all know the answer to this! RE: [newbie] Partition size question
The /usr partition is in fact where 99% of all programs are installed, and the / (root) partition can be as little as 300 megs, but this is done in this fashion simply for the purposes of storing configuration files (/etc) and other system related items (sometimes /var as well where logs are usually stored). Also, this can help increase security as well if configured properly. Although a word of advice, being that your drive space is quite limited, I would lower the size of your swap space to no more than 64 megs simply because with a 200mh system, what are you going to run that would require 250+ megs of ram? Odds are that your 64megs will rarely get touched anyhow! Cory Grey Coastal Pacific Xpress www.cpx.ca (604) 575-0983 -Original Message- From: Dan W. Been playing around for last couple of weeks with an install of Mandrake 8.2. The hardware is an older HP Vectra. 200 MHz Pent.; 80 meg RAM; integrated video (S3 Trio); one 1.5 G, and one 1.2 G hard drive. The 1.5 G drive is partitioned with a (about) 800 meg NT partition, a Linux / partition of almost 500 meg and a Linux swap of about 170 m. The second drive (slave on the IDE channel) is entirely the /usr partition. I've reinstalled Linux several times. Each as an experiment and learning tool. During the package install phase, the installer tells me I have about 1200 or so mb to install the packages in. That appears to be the /usr partition as it's followed the sizing of that partition each time I've varied it. So, if all installed apps go into that partition, what takes up the room in the root partition? The documentation says that about 300 mb is generally enough for the / partition. Is there no room for anything else on this partition? Dan W. RE: [newbie] how can i have Windows beside Mandrake ..
It is actually quite simple. First, install windows (It does matter which windows you are using… the steps for 2000 are a little different) note: Windows MUST be on the PRIMARY MASTER drive! Then make a boot disk for that version of windows you installed. DO NOT skip this step! Next, install mandrake, but during the install, when you get to the “partition assignment” stage, there will be a partition listed as FAT32 or NTFS. Give that a mount point of /mnt/windows or whatever you choose. Then once the files are all installed, you reach the “Boot configuration” stage. You will be given the option of using grub or lilo… I recommend lilo because of it’s simplicity. Then when you have to configure lilo, make sure that you have created a label called “dos” or “windows” and point it to the partition where windows is installed. I think that if windows is already installed, mandrake will automatically configure this for you, but double check anyhow. Then when asked make sure you create a mandrake boot disk as well!! This step should NEVER be skipped in a dual boot environment, because if windows ever overwrites the boot sector, you wont be able to access your linux partition without a lot of unneeded effort! Once all this is complete, and after the installation of mandrake is complete, everything should be ok. In theory, if everything goes well the boot disks you made shouldn’t ever be needed, but have them just in case everything goes to hell. Also a good reference for this information is the mandrake installation guide (found on http://www.linux-mandrake.com) or you can always check out the howto’s. I have provided a link to the howto pertaining to dual booting windows/linux here à http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+Win95/index.html I hope this helps a little!
