[newbie] Print Server

Hi all. I'm wondering if there is anyone here who has had experience
with the Hawking Mini Print Server. This is a small device that attaches
to the back of my printer and allows me to access the printer from any
machine on the network. Works extremely well in Windows but I have no
idea how to configure it under Linux ( Mandrake 9.0 and Redhat 8.0 ). It
uses the IPX protocol and the port is named LPT:PS9CB0-1.

Install rp-pppoe. All you will need to know for that
install is your user name, password, and what eth card you will be using.
In my case Imade sure I chose eth0, which is the only eth card in
my box. When asked for a DNSnumber type 'server'. Choose 1,2,or 3
for the built in firewalling. Then, in a terminal type 'adsl-start' and
see if you can move about the web. It's that simple.

[newbie] printer does not show up on Windows machine

2001-01-05 Thread Glenn Johnson

I installed Mandrake 7.2 with CUPS and samba. I have applied all

restart the smb service with "service smb restart" then the printer
shows up.

Any idea of how to fix this?

2000-12-10 Thread Glenn Johnson

Joe, I'm using BA Infospeed also, and aside from stumbling on the first
few attempts to set it up, I basically have had no trouble. I too use
the Roaring Penguin software. You need to make sure that your net card
is not initialized at boot time, and that it has no IP address asigned
to it. Run the roe setup program, and answer all the q's. Make sure
you answer 'server' at the point where you actually have that option.
Finish up the install and reboot your system. Try to log on. If you
can't get on or you can get on but can't route, you need to make sure
that the nameservers are configured in /etc/resolv.conf and
/etc/ppp/resolv.conf. If they aren't listed in these 2 files, add them,
save the changes, and reboot again. Try to log on again. This is usually
what I need to do to get my internet connection working.

Add a couple aliases in your .bashrc file for the adsl-start, adsl-stop,
and adsl-status commands. This beats typing those commands all the time.
I used the following:
aa=adsl-start
ab=adsl-stop
ac-adsl-status

Not very imaginative, but they work!

Let me know how you make out.

Joe, under DrakConf section 'startup services' make sure that 'ADSL' is
un-checked as well as 'network'. Next, in the LinuxConf button, click
'networking'. In the client tasks tab click 'Basic Host Information. Under the
tab for Adaptor 1, see that there is no ip address for the card, and 'manual'
is checked. On my computer, the 'enabled' box is checked, but as I remember,
that should not be checked. Reboot Linux and see if the net card is not
initialized now. If it isn't, try to log on and browse the web.

Alternatively, you can go to a terminal and run 'netconf'. This will give you
many of the same setup options as DrakConf.

Keep me posted...

drive (WD 3.2 gig at 5400 rpm) did show a modest increase in performance, however, I
am currently not using that feature. Maybe I'll set HDB again with hdparm, combine
it with the IDEBUS comment, and see what happens. Thanks again Ronald!!!

Re: [newbie] DSL setup

2000-09-11 Thread Glenn Johnson

Yes. You need to type (as root), 'adsl-start' and you will see a few dots
echoed, and then it will (should) say 'Connected!'. At that point you can
surf the web, get your mail, etc... To disconnect you type 'adsl-stop'.

I'm assuming you have a dynamic IP address? I do (Bell Atlantic). If so, you
need only to untar the rp-pppoe package, change to the directory created,
run command "./go and the software prety much does the rest. Answer a few
questions, then read the included 'HOW-TO-CONNECT file. After I did this I
could connect but I couldn't go anywhere online. I believe there was a
problem resolving host names (correct me here if I'm wrong, group). I used
Windows' ipconfig utility to get my current DNS server number, back to
Linux, added the info to my /etc/resolve.conf file ( nameserver
123.45.678.90) , connected again and I was good to go. Works like a charm!

The best advice is to pay STRICT attention to the 'HOW-TO-CONNECT' file. Do
exactly as it says.

A question to the group: How can I make it so I can use the adsl commands as
a regular user. Right now I have to su to run them if I'm logged on as 'joe
user'. If I try it as 'joe user' it says 'no such file' or something like
that.

We have our DSL line through Pacbell and they do not support Linux (if
you should have a problem) and I believe that most of them will say that
they don't support Linux. I have figured out the reasoning for this and
that is because Linux has a much faster bandwidth than Windows does. I
tested this out when downloading the 7.2 Beta -- on Linux it downloaded
at an average of 148 K/sec when doing it on Windows it was 52K/sec BIG

Most cable providers use DHCP to assign the IPs to attached hosts, but
 some

Most cable companies seem use the MAC address of the cable modem itself

Check with your cable provider, and try to get as much information out of

Paul, you need to get a program called rp-pppoe-2.2.tar.gz from Roaring Penguin.
Their web site is www.roaringpenguin.com. Download the newest version and
install it per their instuctions. It's a very easy program to set up. Answer
the 5 or 6 questions when you RUN the adsl-setup program (actually, it runs
itself at the end of the questions) and you should be good to go. I use this
program myself. When I first tried it out I could connect but couldn't move to
any web pages. I found that I needed to add my ISP's dns server address to my
/etc/resolve.conf and all was well. That done, I connect and surf to my heart's
delight. To disconnect you type ADSL-STOP. Good luck.

Oh, one other thing, pay VERY close attention to their 'how to connect' text
file. This will help to resolve any other problems you may encounter. They
really seem to know what they're talking about. :)

I'm sure that that would work, but I'd need an awfully long cable, considering that the
Windows machine is in another room! :D

Optionally, you could run samba on the the Linux box. This will make
the Linux box appear as a Windows server to the Win98 box. You can
share your printer, drive space, etc. Go to www.samba.org for more
info. The latest version is 2.07, vs the 2.06 that comes w/ Mandrake
7.0, and the new version comes (reportedly) w/ a html version of the
O'Reilly 'Using Samba' book, widely considered to be one of the
 definitive works on the subject.

A little more work, but ultimately worth the effort.

If you have trouble setting up the print sharing, I see no reason why an A/B
printer switch couldn't be used. just change the cableing so each computer is
on the "output" end of the switch and the printer is the "input" side of the
switch, then label A as Win and B as Linux. I haven't tried this...but the
switch is BI-Directional, so it shoould work. Maybe someone else has some

Just a suggestion, and MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS, but it should work like this.

[newbie] Asking questions

2000-05-05 Thread Glenn Johnson

Hey all. Before I post a request for help, I would like to know if
I should restrict my posts to 1 question per message. I have several
questions regarding Linux Mandrake 7.0.

Thanks,

[newbie] Quake

2000-05-05 Thread Glenn Johnson

I've been playing Quake under Linux for a while now with no problems.
Tried to play last night and got the error 'can't load library
LIBM.SO.5'. Is this familiar to anyone?

Thank you

[newbie] Recompile kernel

2000-05-05 Thread Glenn Johnson

Hi all. Another question. Am I likely to see a performance increase if
I recompile the kernel? My cpu is an AMD K6/2 400. The Linux system
sees it as a 586.

Thank you all...

[newbie] Many Questions

2000-04-25 Thread Glenn Johnson

Hi all. Got a few Mandrake related questions, but first a comment. Mandrake has
to be by far the BEST package that I've installed to date. I've tried Caldera,
Redhat, Suse, Storm, Debian, etc. They are all pretty good, but none of them
worked as well as Mandrake. When I was done with the Mandrake install, the
only thing not working (hardware wise) was the sound card, until I ran
sndconfig. Now I have sound too. This distro even supported my ATI Rage video
card, with NO interaction on my part! Any how, first question: Anyone having
trouble with the CDDB not working in the cd player program? I can't seem to get
it to connect to the CDDB on-line to retrieve CD track titles. There's not a
whole lot of settings in the program, and I've played with them all. Any ideas?

[newbie] Video mini problem

2000-04-25 Thread Glenn Johnson

Hey all. Here's another curiosity. Although I stated that Mandrake supports my
ATI Rage video card, the screen is off center, shifted to the right side. I
usually get around this by running XVidtune. That works well, but only last the
session. I dual boot Linux/Windows, so I frequently reboot. my machine. Is
there a way to make the XVidtune settings permanent?

[newbie] Netscape

2000-04-25 Thread Glenn Johnson

Hi all. Wondering why Netscape never goes to my home page upon loading. It
always seems to go to some sort of internal 'about' screen. I HAVE set the
preferred home page in preferences. If I click anywhere on the 'about' screen,
then it goes to the home page.

[newbie] GCC

2000-04-25 Thread Glenn Johnson

And yet another question. I've downloaded a few programs and tried to install
them to no avail. After I untar the file, I type './configure'. There is some
activity, and then a message that states the following:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

What's up with that? Does this mean that the GCC program is not installed or
not working properly?
