Hi all. I'm wondering if there is anyone here who has had experience with the Hawking Mini Print Server. Install rp-pppoe. All you will need to know for that install is your user name, password, and what eth card you will be using. In my case Imade sure I chose eth0, which is the only eth card in my box. When asked for a DNSnumber type 'server'. Choose 1,2,or 3 for the built in firewalling. [newbie] Bell Atlantic Infospeed DSL
Joe, I'm using BA Infospeed also, and aside from stumbling on the first few attempts to set it up, I basically have had no trouble. I too use the Roaring Penguin software. You need to make sure that your net card is not initialized at boot time, and that it has no IP address asigned to it. Run the roe setup program, and answer all the q's. Make sure you answer 'server' at the point where you actually have that option. Finish up the install and reboot your system. Try to log on. If you can't get on or you can get on but can't route, you need to make sure that the nameservers are configured in /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/ppp/resolv.conf. If they aren't listed in these 2 files, add them, save the changes, and reboot again. Try to log on again. This is usually what I need to do to get my internet connection working. Add a couple aliases in your .bashrc file for the adsl-start, adsl-stop, and adsl-status commands. This beats typing those commands all the time. I used the following: aa=adsl-start ab=adsl-stop ac-adsl-status Not very imaginative, but they work! In the client tasks tab click 'Basic Host Information. Under the tab for Adaptor 1, see that there is no ip address for the card, and 'manual' is checked. On my computer, the 'enabled' box is checked, but as I remember, that should not be checked. Reboot Linux and see if the net card is not initialized now. If it isn't, try to log on and browse the web. Alternatively, you can go to a terminal and run 'netconf'. This will give you many of the same setup options as DrakConf. I was looking in the LILO docs but found nothing pertaining to IDEBUS, although I thought that lilo.conf might be where just such a comment would go. Only Windows on that drive. I saw no changes in performance there. The HDB drive (WD 3.2 gig at 5400 rpm) did show a modest increase in performance, however, I am currently not using that feature. Maybe I'll set HDB again with hdparm, combine it with the IDEBUS comment, and see what happens. Re: [newbie] DSL setup
Yes. You need to type (as root), 'adsl-start' and you will see a few dots echoed, and then it will (should) say 'Connected!'. At that point you can surf the web, get your mail, etc... To disconnect you type 'adsl-stop'. I'm assuming you have a dynamic IP address? I do (Bell Atlantic). If so, you need only to untar the rp-pppoe package, change to the directory created, run command "./go and the software prety much does the rest. Answer a few questions, then read the included 'HOW-TO-CONNECT file. After I did this I could connect but I couldn't go anywhere online. I believe there was a problem resolving host names (correct me here if I'm wrong, group). I used Windows' ipconfig utility to get my current DNS server number, back to Linux, added the info to my /etc/resolve.conf file ( nameserver 123.45.678.90) , connected again and I was good to go. Works like a charm! The best advice is to pay STRICT attention to the 'HOW-TO-CONNECT' file. Do exactly as it says. A question to the group: How can I make it so I can use the adsl commands as a regular user. Right now I have to su to run them if I'm logged on as 'joe user'. If I try it as 'joe user' it says 'no such file' or something like that. Glenn Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux User #175132 Usually powered by Mandrake Linux 7.1

We have our DSL line through Pacbell and they do not support Linux (if you should have a problem) and I believe that most of them will say that they don't support Linux. I have figured out the reasoning for this and that is because Linux has a much faster bandwidth than Windows does. Most cable companies seem use the MAC address of the cable modem itself for LAN identification, but a few are actually using the MAC address of your internal network card. This will cause problems if you need to change the network card in your computer. Check with your cable provider, and try to get as much information out of them as possible. It may not be easy...the support techs I've had to speak with at optonline don't seem to have a clue about networking issues. Re: [newbie] FW: help with setting up pppoE
Paul, you need to get a program called rp-pppoe-2.2.tar.gz from Roaring Penguin. Their web site is www.roaringpenguin.com. Download the newest version and install it per their instuctions. It's a very easy program to set up. Answer the 5 or 6 questions when you RUN the adsl-setup program (actually, it runs itself at the end of the questions) and you should be good to go. I use this program myself. When I first tried it out I could connect but couldn't move to any web pages. I found that I needed to add my ISP's dns server address to my /etc/resolve.conf and all was well. That done, I connect and surf to my heart's delight. To disconnect you type ADSL-STOP. Good luck. Oh, one other thing, pay VERY close attention to their 'how to connect' text file. This will help to resolve any other problems you may encounter. I've tried Caldera, Redhat, Suse, Storm, Debian, etc. They are all pretty good, but none of them worked as well as Mandrake. When I was done with the Mandrake install, the only thing not working (hardware wise) was the sound card, until I ran sndconfig. Now I have sound too. This distro even supported my ATI Rage video card, with NO interaction on my part! Any how, first question: Anyone having trouble with the CDDB not working in the cd player program?
