Just go thru the steps to install software on your system using the GUI,
and there will be a text field you can fill in what you want to search
for, and type in wizard - should only bring up one option, install that.

Sorry for the lack of terminology or program name you would use to
install software - just going from memory here.

I've messed up 4 CD's in trying to get it on the CD.
it gets half-way thru...and spits out the CD and gives me an error

First, it is quite possible that the cd size would show something bigger if
it
is using 1000K per MB instead of the proper 1024.

Second, to make sure the iso is good before you try to download it again,
there is a file on the mirror called md5sum. in there is a checksum from a
program called md5sum. You can get a copy of this utility free on the
Internet and use it against your iso. then compare the output from your iso
to the file from the mirro. If they match, your iso is good. If they
don't,
you need to get a new copy of the iso. If you were already running linux,
there is a utility called rsync which you can use to only download the part
of the iso that is bad, but I don't think there is a windows version
available, but I may be wrong.

Lets skip the 1024=1000 KB discussion not confuse the poor sod.

Seeing as you're on windows get MD5Summer. Or email me offlist I'll send
it do you. Its fast stupidly simple to use. I'm sure you know how to
use google to find it if need be.

Nero isn't hard to use, read the help files for Nero. They are in plain
english useful to read for burning ISO's with step by step
instructions. Lastly, use CDRW's. Save the environment your money. YOu
can then reburn over top these cd's later should you wish to upgrade to MDK

Not, happens all the time, somebody dinks with the mirror or a ftp
transfer
gets fubared, that is why all of the iso.s and a lot of the security rpms
have md5sums. So you can check em and make sure the d/l worked correctly.
It doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. Try a different mirror or
the same one with a new d/l.

It might not be the mirror, but the download. And Mandrake does not check
the
mirrors (except it's primary) because they are public mirrors and anyone can
mirror it because it is GPL software. They have absolutely no control over
any of those machines.

Get mdsummer to make you MD5's from your ISO's. Create them using MDSummer
itself. Then check them with MDSummer when its done. The MD5's that is
that it made. If htey come out OK your ISO's are fine.

if not...then ya something is fubared. Might even be something on your

You can see them by opening a command prompt on W2K and typing:

ipconfig /displaydns

You may get more entries than two or three though.

Let's ignore for the moment the fact that it would make more sense for
you to connect the linux machine to the DSL and use it as a gateway and
firewall for the windoze clients. Maybe that can be version 2.

If DSL is working from W2K, all you need to do is switch on internet
connection sharing there and then set the address of that machine as the
gateway for your linux box. You can set the gateway address using the
control center, using the internet connection wizard.

You will also need the address(es) of the DNS inserted into a file
 called: /etc/resolv.conf

 It should look like:

 nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
 nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The first address is that of the primary DNS, then the secondary. You
can have as many of these as your ISP provides.

That's all that's required, but as said above, it would make a lot more
sense to front-end with linux. Is your DSL modem ethernet connected or
USB? If it's ethernet, then getting the linux gateway config going is
really easy. If USB, then the answer is always it depends.

Anyway, make a start and post more questions. You'll find plenty of
people here who can help you make this work.

and a mandrake linux only machine
using a INTEL InBusiness 5 port hub.

every machine sees each other...but only the DSL connection is on
the windows 2k pro setup with verizon DSL.

I'm trying to get linux to now see the windows box...so that i can then
setup the dsl connection to share with the windows boxes...
I would appreciate some help with this...anyone care to lend a hand?

Brian

LOL...I tried the ROUTER way, using a D-LINK DI-704P
but when i tried to setup the software under windows..
it gave me a bluescreen to the point I had to re-format
etc. etc...stinks...so now I'm just using the hub...

1. Plug in a router/firewall/NAT between the DSL connection and the
hub. If you have an old Pentium kickin around with just a floppy drive,
that's all you need. There are plenty of kickass floppy-based Linux
firewalls you can snag for free.

2. Done.

or:

1. Configure your Mandrake box as a firewall/router/NAT which is a lot
more complicated and time consuming, IMHO, but will teach you lots about
how firewalls, NAT, and routing work. There should be an internet
connection sharing wizard in MCC though, I am not sure if it takes care
of all that.

I *always* recommend a dedicated firewall/NAT, no foolin around, learn
IPTables later.

IMO.
