Do you have your computer set up to network as well? If so, you may have

[newbie] Mandrake installer corrupts system?

2000-05-12 Thread Kirk McElhearn

For the second time in a week, I have managed to trash my system. Not
that I did anything really wrong - I merely had some problems and tried
to reinstall the system as an upgrade. When looking for previously
installed packages, it shows an error when it is trying to read an rpm
database file. After that, I can no longer boot into the system and need
to do a full install again.

Any idea what's happening? If this is a bug, it sure is a mean one...

Well, that turned out to be the problem. The LAN settings had a default
gateway, here's what someone else sent me:

I had the same problem will my dial up .

I found that Linuxconf version distributed with LM seems to insist on
setting a default route, if you configure a local network and a dial-up
connecton with it

being offline, run /sbin/route -n as root. there shouldn't be any entry
starting with '0.0.0.0' ... such an entry means that there already is a
default route on your system. In this case, run /sbin/route del default

check the file '/etc/susconfig/network' and remove any lines which start
with Gateway or Gatewaydev.

also check the entries in /etc/resolv.conf for correctness

I had some 0.0.0.0 gateways listed on mine and just deleted that on
line and all worked well after that
good luck ... hope this helps ... someone sent it to me

I eliminated the default gateway, and can now get both a ppp connection
and a LAN connection (although, my Lan is simply my Linux box networked
to my Mac by AppleTalk - it is very possible that other configurations
would not work...).

Hope this helps,

Kirklilo can't keep you from booting with a floppy because
you set the system bios to boot whatever device you want to be
the boot device. If you tell the bios to try the floppy first
or to only boot from the floppy then if there is a bootable disc
present in the drive, your system will boot with whatever is on
that floppy.

Doesn't lilo specify what type of file system will be on the floppy?
Maybe that's why I couldn't boot off a dos floppy...

You can boot your Linux installation from a floppy forever, but
I wouldn't say it's a particularly good idea, and I certainly
wouldn't say that it would be best. If it makes you more
comfortable, than it's probably a good short term solution, but
you'll eventually probably get tired of the slowness of a floppy
boot and begin using lilo (or lilo in conjunction with a
commercial multi-boot loader like Boot Magic).

What does Boot Magic do? Does it do the same as lilo, but under Windows?

It's not really that slow to boot from a floppy But it would be
easier if I didn't have to.

Well, like an asshole, I figured I could just install things and see what
happened... Well, I did.

I installed a hack called Aurora, that does nothing more than make the
screen look a bit nicer during startup, by giving a graphical front end
to the init process. First, this hack makes it so I cannot book directly
into X anymore, and I don't know how to fix it. Then, since I don't know
how to install it, it is still there...

So, I figured I'll just do a new install. But now, my computer won't
boot off the install CD any more (I checked the BIOS, it's ok). Then, it
won't boot at all, because I get the following message:

hdc: lost interrupt

over and over. (hdc is my Zip drive).

So, this hack has fried my computer. What can I do to save it?

(BTW, I can boot Windows)

I would like to add a SCSI card to my Mandrake PC so I can use a CD
burner. First of all, is audio CD burning smooth under Mandrake?
Second, any reccomendations on a SCSI card that would be compatible?

[newbie] upgrade from 6.1 to 7.0

2000-03-25 Thread Kirk McElhearn

I just upgraded to 7.0 today, and have noticed that everything is much
slower than before. Do I need more ram for this version, or is there
something else?

I would use DrakConf. But it is not a KDE program. ;-)

There is an icon for this on the desktop, but when I click on it nothing
happens...

According to the manual, not really.
USB support in general is still not that good
in x86 Linux variants as it is in Windoze.
But they are working on it, so chances are great
that newer kernel versions will offer better
USB support.

Well, does not really mean not at all? Or, sometimes...

I'd love to be able to use my Sagem USB ISDN adapter
