You can call me crazy. What I do is install Linux-Mandrake, RedHat,
TurboLinux each on a separate harddisk in a removable tray. This is purely
for learning. I use Win95 at home, Win 95 + 98 at work. If any of the Linux
got mess-up my working OS is intact. Just IMHO. Regards

Liz,
FYI,
I use kppp; when 'pppd died unexpectedly' I set the following :
modem time out = 360
modem busy wait = 1
modem pre-init delay = 1
modem post-init delay = 3
guard time = 255
pppd time out = 360
YMMV, HTH

Hektor for your info,

In Win 9.X you need only to activate an external support software to enable
Chinese in an English software. In Linux - there two ways :
(1) get cle from http://cle.linux.org.tw/ this is plugin for Big5 code,
which you are looking for. I have no practical info on this because I do
not do Chinese in Big5.
(2) get a Chinese-Linux (for Big5 and GB2312) from one of these :
www.redflag-linux.com; www.bluepoint.com.cn; www.xteamlinux.com.cn;
www.turbolinux.com.cn ; presently I am trying out TurboLinux 6.1 (Chinese)
myself. Regards

Jason,
Thank you for your advice.
As root, I issued command in console mood : chmod 4755 /usr/bin/kppp. Then
login as user to use kppp, still no go. Back as root to check, found the
permission of kppp has an leading ' l ' ; in the general tab says :
pointing to 'consolehelper'.
It appears that my RedHat is more 'sick' than I thought; I will try to
uninstall/ and re-install kppp package to see what happens. Others complete
reinstall ;-) Will let you know again.

Presumed it is permission problem, I had set all Kppp and pppd related
files : chmod 777.
Still no go.

Just for reference.
If the printer is not in the supported list, using a print filter with your

2000-11-15 Thread L. H. LOO

Grace,
Try my way : make a bootdisk from your Win98 - must have drivers to use
your cdrom drive. Use this disk to boot to DOS, that is when boot process
is completed you see A:> on the monitor -> insert linux cd into the cdrom
drive -> type cd C: {if you cdrom has been detected as C: else change
accordingly} ->cd dosutils -> cd autoboot -> cd mdkinst ->{type} cdrom.bat
-> press [Enter] on keyboard; installation should start. Follow the
installation menu. At one stage you are 'asked' for the 'Extension CD'; if
you do not have it press [Esc] on the keyboard, press [Esc] again to exit.
This is long winded, but that was what worked for me. HTH

Since you have two harddisk, suggest putting your disks in removable

Linux-Mandrake 7.1, & Red Hat 6.0 each on its own - will be doing that

Hi,
If you want to install Mandrake over RedHat, just boot your computer with
the boot disk from Mandrake (or a pure DOS boot disk). Proceed with
Mandrake installation - (as if nothing is there) - Linux-Mandrake will
detect the existing linux and 'ask' you for permission to
over-write/delete, 'say OK' and carry on, every thing will be fine. IF you
are going to remove linux (any distro) and install some other OS, then surf
to :
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-6.2-Manual/getting-started-guide/sl-q-and-a-removing.html

I did both above procedures and both worked for me.

Yes, There is nothing wrong to post a message asking help in that person's
mother tongue. I have seen postings on the net in Chinese(GB2312),
Chinese(Big5), Indonesian National Language, and Malaysian National
Language and lastly in English. I myself read the first two Chinese and
English, since I donot know the other two I leave them to people who knows
to answer.
Why blame the poor fellow who wrote "Solicitar informacion".
Just my 0.2 cents.

PMJI, Yes, this 63-year-old Chinaman does that, but very often instructions
writers write for *themselves* to read - forgetting that readers are
*dummies*. As a result, after RTFineM newbies are still in the dark-age.

Re[2]: [newbie] How to delete an ext2 partition under DOS

2000-08-30 Thread L. H. LOO

Further to my earlier posting - I have just used fdisk (msdos version)
under pure dos - "delete non-dos partition'" - to delete the 3
partitions SuSeLinux created on a 400MB harddisk and formatted it under
Win95 with no problem. May be you can do that also. But be very careful
with which partition you want to delete. Your first posting gave the
impression that you only wanted to delete _one_ partition.
Good Luck.

Nothing wrong with your eye-sight. The message is not Big-5, neither is it
GB2312. I used Cstar2.97 to read it in both codes but *no go*. Cstar will
"read" Chinese created by Richwin, or TwinBridge or others if one of the
two codes is used. The message has Chinese characters but not giving any
meaning. BTW is it Korean ?

With what ? I presume you used the win9.X start-up disk. Does you boot disk
contain cdrom drivers.Try to access your cdrom drive, then cd\dosutils,
execute autoboot.bat from there.
NO GO ?
Then you have to create a linux installation disk, again boot-up with your
win9.X boot-up disk, must have cdrom drivers to activate the rom drive, say
your cdrom drive is drive D:
follow these instructions ffrom RH 6.0 Installation Guide:
C:\> d:
D:\> cd \dosutils {press ENTER}
D:\dosutils>rawrite {press ENTER}
Enter disk image source file name: ..\images\boot.img {press ENTER}
Enter target diskette drive : a: {press ENTER}
Please insert a formatted diskette into drive A: and
press  -- ENTER -- : {press ENTER}

after drive A: light has gone out your linux installation boot disk is ready.
Reboot your computer with this disk in drive A: and follow instructions on
the monitor.
Remember to choose *workstation class installaion*
I have installed RedHat 6.0 following above routine.
Good luck, mail me direct if you wish to.
