FWIW i know ppl have taken the stuff you line cars with *some sort of
foam rubber* sealed the inside of their cases with that to reduce
noise quite a bit.

It's called Dynamat it is a sound deadening material. It is rather good
too.. I have never tried it on a computer case, but I read an article on
one of the overclocking websites about it. I have seen it in a lot of cars
though and know it works there.

 Other states have
better gun laws than this state (read: less restrictive on law abiding
tax paying citizens), such as Texas, Tennessee, and a few others I can't
 remember.

Here in Georgia, in the city I live in Kennesaw, GA there is a city
ordinance that you cannot live inside the city without owning a Firearm.
There is not that many home break-ins here, most of the crime we have is
traffic violations in the city of Kennesaw, there are the occasional
break-ins but those are of stores, not homes.

Anyway I think all should be allowed to own weapons, especially for defense
of your home.

RE: [newbie] OT over reacting

2002-05-06 Thread Michael . Hughes

Well it actually came on the installation CD's, then again since I am new to
linux that may not be what I am looking for and could explain why it doesn't
work.

When I did my install (clean). I choose expert mode and selected the option
to install individual packages and one of them was wine. Which told me it
was for emulating windows. figure this might be helpful to me as a beginner
so I installed it and the man page for it.

I have looked on http://winehq.com and they have a download section for the
binaries and source.

from what some people have said they might be on
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/

Sorry I can't be of more help, with locating the packages, but I would still
appreciate the tips :)

Thanks

Mike

Personally I don't agree with anyone flaming someone because of the email
signature. Who cares what their opinion is. Also he does have a right to
his opinion especially if he lives in the USA, this is guaranteed by the 1st
amendment in the Constitution ( As noted below).

Also Microsoft does suck, I have used windoz products for a number of years
now and I have just started to use Linux in the last year. I never have to
reboot my Linux box, but I have to reboot any windoz box at least once a
day.

And the only reason I still use windoz is because I like to some games every
now and then. If the damn game companies would port stuff to Linux I would
get rid of windoz all together.

Just my $.02

shockingly, freedom of speech is something that the open source ppl
think
highly of.

welcome to linux.

2002-05-03 Thread Michael . Hughes

I hear that...

If it does go Enron then they also have to prove I have that on my systems,
at which time will have nothing but Mandrake, Redhat, SuSe, or anyone of the
other flavors out there. Believe me I am not paying a dime to that co, nor
am I going to jail for them either.

But, none the less you did make good points. I don't agree with the license
agreement but the only way I can use is to click yes. I haven't found a way
to get around that yet.

Anyway if I could get winex to work I wouldn't need to use that inferior
product anyway.

If they start to go Enron, then
you can expect an all out user hunt.

RE: [newbie] dual boot with XP

2002-04-22 Thread Michael . Hughes

you have to put /boot on /dev/hda, I put my in the first 150mb of my hard
disk and then I created a Partition for Windows XP about 5gb and then the
rest is for Linux

/
/home
/var
/swap
/tmp

etc... and then I use LILO as my boot manager. Also make sure you use
FDISK to make the 150mb partition active or else LILO won't load. At least
this is what I had to do.

As for editing the boot.ini

As 'root', edit '/etc/lilo.conf': the first line of lilo.conf reads
boot=hda, change the 'hda' to where ever the '/boot' partition is located
(find out with mount).

Run lilo

Make a copy of the new boot sector with
dd if=/dev/hda[x] bs=512 count=1 of=linux.lnx
Note: 'hda[x]' is whatever the '/boot' partition is.

Copy linux.lnx to the windows 'C: drive'
cp linux.lnx /mnt/windows_c

Modify the 'boot.ini' on the 'C: drive' by appending a line for Mandrake
pointing to the location of the copied LILO boot sector:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=C:\
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT=Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro
/fastdetect
C:\= Microsoft Windows 98se
C:\Linux.lnx=Mandrake 8.0

Reboot.

Login to Win98SE. Open a command line window and run:
fdisk /mbr
to restore the Windows boot sector.

[newbie] Problem loading X

2002-04-19 Thread Michael . Hughes

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 last night, again after deciding that I wanted
to dual boot again. I have set it up to boot to LILO and from there I can
go into Windows, Linux, Floppy, etc.

When I choose to go into Linux it boots up to the shell prompt. This is
what I want it to do. From there I want to be able to type a command to
load X. I prefer to use Gnome for my window manager. I tried typing X at
the prompt, while this seems to try to start X it freezes up the system and
I can't get it to respond to anything. I get a grey screen with an X in the
middle and it tries to load for about 30 sec then it stops, I have let it
sit there like that for 15 min nothing else happens. I rebooted and tried
to type startx and this didn't do anything.

On my Redhat machine I have a similar problem when just typing X to load it,
but startx usually works fine. Can anyone help me load gnome from the shell
prompt.

Thanks

RE: [newbie] Install 8.1 and XP in a dual boot

2002-04-16 Thread Michael . Hughes

OK I installed this damn MS OS on my 1st hard drive. and I installed
Mandrake on the 2nd hard drive.

I put the /boot filesystem on /dev/hda1 and Windoz is on /dev/hda2

The 2nd hard drive is all various Linux file systems.

here is my problem. I would like to have LILO as the defualt boot loader.
I have installed it but the only way to get to it is to edit the boot.ini
file for windoz so that I can boot to linux and then I get the LILO boot
menu.

I want to do away with the windows boot loader but I can't figure out how to
do this.

the /boot partition is the first one on the first hard drive.

my Lilo.conf is setup properly to boot from /dev/hda1

Can someone tell me how to do this???

Thanks Mike

Install Xpee first, then MDK 8.2. After that you can reinstall Xpee (as
you usually have to) as many times as you like.

[newbie] Installation Problems

2002-04-12 Thread Michael . Hughes

Hi,

I just installed ver 8.1 on my system.

This is a dual boot and during install it asked me to install LILO which I
did. then it said to remove media and it rebooted the pc.

Goes through POST, then starts to load everything. Gets to the point where
it tries to boot from the CD ROM, then tries to boot from the Floppy Drive.
At this point the screen has

01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 in a continuous
loop going across the screen

The light for the floppy drive is on constantly. it is not blinking.
Normally this is due to cable being installed wrong, but the cable is right
cause if I boot to windows it is fine.

I can boot to windows if I use my windows boot disk.

I can boot to Linux if I use the Linux boot did it asked me to create.

but it will not boot up normally to LILO and give me the boot options that
it should.

Windows is installed on hda 40GB
Linux is installed on hdb 40GB

Computer config is Dual P3 1GHZ, 768 MB RAM, CDR, Floppy, 2 hard drives, and
zip drive, GeForce2 video card.

The install went smoothly as far as I can tell I didn't get any errors
during install and everything seemed to be recognized properly. There is no
SCSI equipment in the machine.

Has anyone seen this before. I cannot get it to stop unless I turn the pc
off.

[newbie] Question about a Linux box in an Windows Domain

2002-04-09 Thread Michael . Hughes

If I have a Windows domain and want to add a linux box, do I need to have
Samba installed on it.

I have a small network at home and am going to add the Linux box I built to
it.

Network config is

Router
|
Hub
|
--
| | | | |
 Domain PC1 PC2 PC3Linux
   Controller Box

The Domain Controller is Providing DNS, DHCP. The Router does NAT
translations.

My question is do I need Samba to install on the domain?
Can I just plug in and then configure proper settings like a static IP, and
DNS server IP, Gateway IP, etc...

Thanks Mike
