[newbie] USB external hard drive

2005-01-16 Thread Owen Berio
I have tried several times to get Mandrake version 10.1 to recognize my
external USB ( Maxtor Diamond Max) hard drive. If I turn it on before
or during bootup it seems to freeze the booting process. It is not
recognized. Actually listed hardware states it is a unknown device. If
I turn it on after booting it has a red pilot light.
I have even removed the drive from the case and booting without the
drive gives a green pilot light but the device is not recognized in the
hardware list. The case does not have any jumpers to change but the hard
drive does. Could the problem reside here?
The box recognizes my USB mouse and printer automatically.
Any suggestions/
Owen

[newbie] Security Update Woes

2004-04-18 Thread Owen Berio
I have just reinstalled the down load version of 9.2 for the fourth time.
In the previous installations all appeared well until I installed the
 security updates.
The initial installations identified correctly my cd rom, floppy, hard disc,
etc. Most gratifying was xD card reader was identified as mt/windows and
it worked. Opening sequence was file/mnt/windows/dcim/100olymp/*.jpg
But when I d/l and installed all of the suggested/listed security updates
utter ruin was the result. The xD card reader icon requested a program to
read the device . I tried everything on the KDE menu without success.
The floppy no longer responded. There was actually a lock attached to the
icon.
The Kmai was missing from the mail menu.
Kppp was also missing from the Network/ Remote Access menu.
I did searches for 100olymp and dcim . Nothing was found, as though the
two file/directories were removed from the system.
Security updates somehow made my system so secure I could no longer use it.
Please, what can I do? I want to keep my system current with the necessary
updates.

[newbie] Icon for connecting to server

I just reinstalled version 9,2 in order to correct one problem. The original
problem was corrected but in the process another was created.
In my previous installation I had a icon for connecting to the internet. It
dialed my provider and connected using my name' and password.
Now I no longer have it nor can I find anyway of connecting except by using
root to configure your computer each time I need to dial my provider.
There has to be another way, but how?

Owen you should be able to open konqueror and navigate to the /mnt

removable media or some such extra device. If you click on that and then
the dcmi folder ( or whatever it calls itself with xD) it will bring up

Owen,
When you login, type X, and press enter to start the X server. After
you're in, go into Mandrake Control Center. Go into System, then Display
Manager to choose a graphical login. The boot screen is Lilo, which is
what most people use(I think.) I'm not sure what it was like before, as
I've never used Mdk9.1, but if you want to use Grub, go to
BootBootloader to configure it.

Second, the BIOS on my Microsoft box is limiting the ability to format my

I am changing the motherboard with one I hope has a more recent BIOS.
Then I will probably be back to impose once again.

 Is this doable?

RE: [newbie] Formatting External Hard Drive

2004-01-13 Thread Owen Berio
I guess I broke it but good.
while trying to find a mount point that works I think I wiped out the
formatting on my primary hard drive. It had two partitions but only the
partition with Mandrake was formatted for Linux and had a mount point.
The other partition was DOS formatted.
  Here is what I had for the two partitions;

/ Mandrake backup
Mount Point: /Mandrake backup
Device: hdc5
Type: Journalised FS: ext
Size 51GB (44%)
Formatted
Mounted
/Win2000 backup
Mount point /Win2000 backup
Device: hdc6
Dos drive letter; ( C just a guess)
Type Fat 32
size 51 GB (44%)
Formatted
Mounted
Although it stated the partitions were mounted I never could find
them If I tired the icons on the desktop for my floppy drive and CD
disappeared.

When I try to reboot I now get the following message:
UFS; Can't find ext3 file system on dev ide 0 (3,6)
Mount: error 22 mounting ext 3 flags.
Kernel panic:
No init found.
Try passing init = option to Kernel
Question do I need to reinstall the whole thing?
If I do reinstall should I try to install the secondary HD at that time or
should I wait until all of the updates are installed. (I'm using 9.1? The
reason I ask is my phone connection is terribly slow and requires about
three to four nights to install the updates.

[newbie] Changing screen resolution

2002-11-06 Thread Owen Berio
I'm using a A-B switch box between two computers. One is dedicated to
WIN2000, the other is dedicated to Mandrake 8.2. The box allows me to utalize
the same monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Even though the monitor resolution is set the same for both boxes, some of
the menue boxes run off the screen when using Mandrake. The situation is so
bad that even with the title bars removed the icons for minimize,
maximize, close on the top of the screen cannot be seen. The same goes for the
bottom where the boxes for, o.k. or cancel are normallyfound. The sides are
rendered the same so that the resize or move cannot be accessed.

Any suggestions how I can solve this? I don't want to change my resolution
from 600 to 800. Six hundred is what I use in Windows, anything smaller I
find hard to see. Mostly I'm using KDE

[newbie] Defrag?

2002-11-05 Thread Owen Berio
After two weeks of trial and error I began to wonder about defraging my
Mandrake dedicated box. I have version 8.2 with a standard installation.
Does this version have a defraging utility?
TIA,
 Owen
