Subject: [newbie] Kernel upgrade, kppp problem

 Hi..,
I've recently upgrade my kernel and follow the instruction at
 www.linux-mandrake.com
for kernel 2.2.3-ac4 but after upgrading, I cannot use my kppp anymore.
I always had this 'timeout expired' error message even I manage to dial
the
 server.
Now what is the problem? Script?

 ~~ Avionix ~~

I have had the same problem with 2.2.3-ac4. Try upgrading to 2.2.5 and see
if it fixes your problem, as it did with mine.

[newbie] Cleaning up the ol' hard drive (Springtime!)

1999-04-03 Thread Paul A. Bernicchi

Hi all.

Those of you that know me know that I've only been with Linux a few months
now... and my learning curve has grown exponentially in that time. I
started with Mandrake 5.2 (2.0.36) / KDE 1.0 and have upgraded
systematically since - I am now using 2.2.3-ac4 and KDE 1.1 with the latest
packages to boot.

I fear that since I had to force a few installs in the past via RPM, and
that I am still not totally familiar with directory structures (read:
half-assed, jury-rigged installs grin), that I have, for lack of a better
word, a tons of crap on my hard drive. My God, the source code for
2.2.3ac-4 takes up like 50+ megs! ;)

Reason I'm asking is that, other than being a tidy guy that organizes on a
regular basis, I also have my install on a 450 meg hard drive - not that I
don't have access to about 6 gigs in other mount points, but you get the
point.

Any suggestions on how I can freshen up my installation, short of starting
from scratch? Also, I know that, by nature, ext2 is efficient, but is there
a defrag program out there?

Thanks for your help.

[newbie] Re:

1999-04-01 Thread Paul A. Bernicchi

Tomasz,

I'm not sure about DPMS support - make sure you have a newer kernel that
supports DPMS/APM.

As for your question about virtual desktop, in your /etc/X11/XF86Config
file, toward the end, you will find a line that reads _something_ like:
(pardon my paraphrasing; I'm in Windows NT right now g)

Display
 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024

Anyways, the bottom line is important; for the largest resolution in this
line is the "virtual" one used for the others. FOR EXAMPLE -- if you have
1280x1024 like above, if you use CTRL-ALT-- to switch to 1024x768, etc.,
it will be a virtual 1280x1024.

My solution for your situation (14" monitor) would be to just list 640x480
as the ONLY resolution. It's when you do add the 800x600 that you enter
"virtual city." ;)

Hope this helps - email me for more detailed information and I'll make sure
I'm actually IN Linux.

Hello everyone,I've been using Mandrake 5.2 for
5 days now and had no problems whatsoever. Configuration went OK and I got
most of the things I wanted to work. I still have a few questions though
and I hope someone can help me out:1) how to enable DPMS features? I
want my monitor to shut off after a specific time. I put 'OffTime 30'
in XF86Config but the DPMS is not enabled. If I do 'xset +dpms' in X,
it works alright but I want to have it set automatically. The manual for
XF86Config says that "power_saver has to be enabled". How?2) how
to turn off the internal modem speaker (mine is USR Sportster v.90/INT/D/F/V)
so that it's silent when it dials out? Is it posible at all? I often use
my machine at nights and don't want to wake up my wife :-)3)
how to get rid of the Virtual Desktop feature in KDE? I commented out all the
instances of 'Virtual' in XF86Config which fixed the problem partially.
Everything is OK in 800x600 but in 640x480 my screen behaves as if it
  were in virtual 800x600. (I have a 14" monitor so I can't use anything
  higher and sometimes need 640x480)

Re: [newbie] XServer for 3dfx chipset?

1999-03-25 Thread Paul A. Bernicchi

Hi Agi,

Well, there is. You can setup a late version of the Linux kernel
(anything newer than 2.1.119 should do) with vesafb and use the
XF86_FBDev server with it. Anthony D'Amico has a nice introduction how
to do this at http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/,
where he describes how to get the Banshee to work. Note that the section there
about installing the XF68_FBDev X server can be omitted. Instead use the
XF86_FBDev that is provided as part of XFree86 3.3.3.1. This works in a
very similar way for other VBE-2.0 compliant cards as well.
Hope this helps - it worked like a charm for me... as I am running KDE @
800x600x32bpp with no problems.
Take care,
Paul

Any ideas? I just want the ktheme manager... ;)

From the error messages in the compile, it looks like you don't have
some kernel sources installed. The items it's looking for can be
provided by one of two packages. Use the kernel-headers package if you
don't intend on compiling a custom kernel. Use the kernel-source
package if you think you might be interesting in compiling your own
 kernel at some point.

I don't know whether either of these two packages set the symlinks that
you'll need, though I'd imagine that kernel-headers probably does. In
any case, after installing either of the above packages, use the
 following commands (as root):

   cd /usr/include
   ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386 asm
   ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/linux linux
   ln -s /usr/src/linux/include/scsi scsi

Retry your compile and everything should be peachy.

Steve,

OK, it seems my symlink "asm" was invalid... I deleted it a created a new one.
The compile for kdelibs went smoothly, but still no luck with kdenonbeta.

Would you happen to know which package the file k2url.h is a part of? Mayeb
someone can just email it to me as a band-aid fix ;)

No, everything should work with the 2D portion of your card. Recompiling your

WRONG...

Clay, you would need to find a recent kernel (at least 2.0.36 that comes with
Mandrake 5.2) and recompile it to include VFAT support. You would then add an
entry to your fstab and/or lilo.conf to mount the FAT32 partition. It is
possible, as I have done it.

Nick,

If you have more than one resolution specified in XF86Config, the highest one
will be used as a virtual desktop, regardless of the current.

Confused? Example:

"800x600" "1024x768" "1200x1024"

will yield a virtual desktop of 1200x1024 in 800x600 or 1024x768. So the
highest one will be used no matter what.

Solution? Find a resolution you like, and make that the only entry in
XF86Config. It'll be the "true" resolution without having to scroll. If you
like to switch on-the-fly, however, I'm afraid you're stuck (unless anyone else
knows a workaround?)

[newbie] OK - Mandrake 5.2 and KDE

1999-02-18 Thread Paul A. Bernicchi

Thanks to all of you that graciously helped me out with my
previous problems. I've asked folks on #kde and #linux (EFnet IRC), but I
can't get a straight answer, and since Mandrake's support area is seriously
lacking (unless I'm missing something)...

I currently have 5.2 installed as follows:

/win98 on /dev/hda1 (VFAT compiled into
2.0.36)
/ on /dev/hdb1 (ext2)
/swap on /dev/hdb2

KDE runs well, even though I can't run it as root! I
for-some-reason get a fatal error #11when I 'startx.'

I'm trying to upgrade my K to 1.1 - for the themes, etc...
(plus the allied menubar looks neat) - I downloaded the ca. 30 megs of RPMs from
the FTP site. My problem is this:

- qt 1.40 is installed, as you know, by default on a
KDE 1.0 installation. I'm trying to RPM -Uvh the qt1.42 files, but I get
an error to the effect of qt 1.40 is needed by (kvt, kconsole,
aktion, kzip, etc.) I have also tried RPM -i. When I got
frustrated and tried to --force it with --nodeps, I got error msgs. galore, and
my 'startkde' was somehow deleted.

I know the correct order to install KDE 1.1 is QT --
KDESUPPORT -- KDEBASE -- KDEAPPS. When I try to install qt 1.40
again from my Mandrake CD, RPM says 1.40 is already installed! What
gives?

Has anyone else here had a similar problem?

Thanks,

Paul

Definitely!

If you like I'll send you my lilo.conf file that you would
install into the MBR by lilo -v -- as I have virtually the exact
same configuration (drive capacities are different).

You'll want lilo on the /hda1, which will either pass
control onto the Windows partition, or load the vmlinuz boot image on
/hdb1.

Let me know if you want it..

Michael,

I have FAT32 on my primary partition, but I have had no
configuration problems whatsoever. Of course, in order to access the
partition once you're in Linux, you'll need VFAT support compiled into your
kernel. My advice would be to stay away from Partition Magic or similar
utilities unless you're venturing into dual/triple-boot territory... ;)

Re: [newbie] copying and linking files from partitions

Is your Win98 partition mounted in Linux? If it's a
FAT16 drive then you'll need to mount is as 'mount -t msdos
/dev/hdxx (fill in 'xx' with your Win partition) /win98'

If it's FAT32, make sure you have VFAT support compiled
into your kernel, instead of 'msdos,' plug in 'vfat' -- this is what I
did.

All you need to do now is make a /win98 directory for your
mount point. Should be all set.
