Re: [newbie]
You may not be too impressed with Linux until you have used it for a while, and start to realize how nice it is to be able to find a way of doing nearly anything you want to do with your PC, and then there is the added bonus that the shell won't crash on you at the drop of the proverbial hat. There is a lot of work involved in learning a new OS, but at least with Linux, the OS does not hide the hardware from you, and you will learn how the PC works while you learn Linux. To me, this is as it should be. I am a newbie myself, perhaps 4 to 6 weeks with Linux, and already, I am spouting off trying to help others with what I have discovered. I would also encourage you to fiddle with linux for a while. I believe you will like it better than windows. The first positive point is that help is always available, from this list and elsewhere. I've been pretty impressed with the patience some of the linux guru's have shown me in getting linux straightened out. So don't learn a little and then stay there, get out and experiment and when you completely crash your system there will be some folks who will straighten it out for you. Secondly, I think you will find that you like linux better than windows once you learn to grok it a little. I was fiddling around in windows yesterday and found myself missing the ability to click a button and switch to a different virtual screen to run a new program. It is small things like that which take a while to appreciate. Good hunting, Rick -- "I don't want to swim in a roped off sea," JB

Suppose one selects a desktop 'theme' to use as one's background, how does the user unpack and use this as background? Richard OK Richard, I recommend you buy the Sam's book Teach yourself KDE. It will help you configure most everything with KDE including themes. I found it particularily usefull for setting up the kde e-mail program. Which I like. The book runs about 20 bucks. Now I'll try and answer your questions. If you are running mandrake 6.0 do the following. To configure themes click on the big k on the bottom left of your screen and go to settings, desktop, theme manager. You can click on the theme you want and then at the top of your screen (in the theme manager) click on contents and you can see the various items you can install with that theme. I mixed and matched mine. I liked some of the sounds from the subtle gray theme and just clicked on that one item to load it then I went to sounds and changed a few to get'em the way I liked. I downloaded the riven theme from the kde themes site and I'm using those as my background. I left the rest of the items with the default. Anyway click on the items you want and then press apply at the bottom of the window. If you are not using Mandrakes version, buy a cheap bytes copy and give her a try. The theme manager with mandrake is pretty straightforward. Mandrake is my favorite flavor of linux. If you do not have a theme manager, the Sam's book does a pretty good step by step guide to installing a theme. By the way if you download a theme apparently you can move the tar directly to the themes manager (use the import button). I unpacked the tar and then moved those individual items to the theme manager and made a mess. If I'm wrong on this someone correct me. As for the modem use the kppp program. I recommend going to root and setting up the modem then going to your individual user and setting up the modem again. Setting the modem up first in root seems to avoid a few problems. I also recommend setting your speed to at least 115000 on the modem. I let some of the true linux guru's here give you more detailed guidance on setting up Kppp. I think you will find that it is easier than configuring a modem under windows. I had nothing but crashes and multiple other problems with it in any and all the distros I've tried. (I'm currently using Mandrake 6 and absolutely love it). The KDE mail, news, and browser all work great and I found no real need for Netscape anyway. It was slow and problematic for me when it _did_ work at all and on several occasions even caused me to have to reinstall Linux (although, a more experienced user could probably have repaired the situation). Anyway, just my two cents worth...Please be merciful. David P. Greenberg David, Don't give up on netscape. If your using mandrake, click on the updates icons and download all three parts of netscape 4.61 at the same time. It will automatically install itself. I found that most of my problems with netscape ended when I went to 4.61. I think you will find that not all web sites will open with KDE's broswer. I look forward to seeing the browser improved with the next reincarnation of mandrake. It's true that Netscape sucks - can't wait for Opera (www.operasoftware.com) to release their Linux version. Anyway, you don't need all 3 parts - you need netscape-common and then either netscape-navigator or netscape-communicator, not both of these. The difference between these two is that Communicator has the mail/news client, while Navigator does not. The reason I recommend downloading all three parts when using the mandrake update is that when I tried to download using only two of the netscape parts the installation came back with an error. When I clicked on all three there was no problem. Rick -- "I don't want to swim in a roped off sea," JB

[newbie] Sweet smell of success real audio G2 part III
A, I've got it working. Real audio sounds great with linux. I had to download and install Netscape 4.61 and alter the files according to the instructions on real audio's web site. Now real player works as a plug-in to netscape. I guess you have to just keep plugging away to eventually figure it out. I still have a couple of more projects to go before I'm completely over to linux but I'm getting there. Next project is getting my cd-burner working in linux. I'd like to copy the files I've downloaded for linux 4.61 and real player G2 to a cd. Can anyone point me in the right direction here. Thanks, Rick "Mulerider" Murphy -- "I don't want to swim in a roped off sea." JB
[newbie] Getting Real Audio to work phase II
Well Troops, I believe I've got the real player G2 installed right. I downloaded a wav file and got the G2 to play it. What I need to do is somehow get both it and netscape configured to auto load the programs when I click on them. Will the G2 player work with Netscape 4.6 or do I need to go to 4.61? Has anyone successfully configured the G2 player? If so what are your preference settings for proxy and connections? I've configured netscape navigator to launch realplayer when a real media link is clicked using the instructions from realplayers web site but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Rick -- "I don't want to swim in a roped off sea." JB

If it won't extract then open the file as super user, right click on the file and go to permissions and check all the blocks giving your local user permission to use it.
