[newbie] Samba works as domain server question

2002-06-13 Thread Tuan tran

Hi,
I'm using Linux as my file server for all windows
computer via Samba. I have no problem with workgroup.
It works fine. Now, I want to setup my linux box works
like domain server (it means all windows users on my
network must logon to this computer). After I setup
smb.conf file, I use can not use Windows computer
access my Linux box. It said Domain not found! I test
smb.conf and it works fine. Therefore, I think I must
setup my Linux box as domain server first, isn't it?
If yes, WhAT SOFTWARE do I need to install in able to
setup my own domain? How do I test it? And can we use
Webmin to setup test?
Any input is a big thanks

Thank you.

[newbie] Postfix POP

2002-05-23 Thread Tuan tran

I'm trying to setup my own mail server by using
Postfix and have few questions need to ask.

1. By using Postfix I can send and receive email via
my mail server machine, isn't it?
2. I have setup a MX record (my_mailhost.mydomain.com)
at the place which I choose to pack my domain name; do
I need to write any line at main.cf file?
3. In able to send receive email via other client
mail program (ie. Outlook) I must enable Xinet,
POP3. isn't it?
4.I setup Postfix pop3 at my server computer and
know they are running; Can I TELNET from other
computer to check to make sure they work properly?
5.If I also turn on IMAP will it cause POP3 works
incorrectlly? And I've heard that IMAP can be use to
set up Web Mail, isn't it?

Yes. Go to the postfix site, and check the following

 * myhostname (the name of your box, e.g.

 * mydomain (the name of your domain, e.g.

No, you actually only need to open port 25, unless you plan to access
your
e-mail via pop3 from outside your local network.

How can I setup Postfix to listen those 2 ports
(for sending and receiving mails)?

Postfix only needs port 25 (which is SMTP) -- port 110 is pop3, which is
a
totally separate piece of software and a different protocol. Postfix is
a
'mail transport agent' (MTA), and handles transporting e-mail from the
source address to the destination address.

If I setup an account on Postfix,
i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] , do I have to add user name ME on my server
computer?
user name ME has to either be added as a normal user or must be an alias
in
/etc/postfix/aliases .

To use client mail program like Outlook to send and receive mail via
my
mail server, what do I need to setup on Postfix and what program I need
run at startup (i.e. POP3 IMAP.!!??).

For postfix, you need to configure it to allow access from whatever
client
machine you are using so that you can send e-mail through it from your
mail
user agent (MUA) such as Outlook, Eudora, etc. As for receiving e-mail,
you don't have to do anything.

To have a fully functional mail server, you need to be running postfix
(or
sendmail) and either imap or pop3 or both.

Do I need to tell Postfix
which ports to listen to or by default it will listen on ports #25 and
#110?

No -- by default Postfix listens only to port 25 (SMTP) -- it doesn't
listen to port 110, which is a totally different protocol (which is
handled
by a different piece of software.

Thank you,
Tuan

RE: [newbie] SAMBA and WEBMIN inaccessible

2001-10-29 Thread Tuan Tran

There's something else you're going to want to look for, or your
webadmin will NOT allow you access to
the interface.

As ROOT, edit the file /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf

I believe it's line 11, that by default reads:

ssl=1

Unless you have ssl configured and the cert created, you will not be
able to gain access to the webmin.
If you change that line to read:

ssl=0

You will be able to get by using http://hostname:1.

Once you've gotten that far, keep in mind that webmin will ONLY recogize
the root user, and the root
passwd specified at install. If you have since changed the root passwd,
the new passwd will not work.
So I hope you either remember the original root passwd, or haven't
changed it.

As far as ssh goes. Stick with it! It's more secure then telnet unless
you're using another kind of
telnet. I know FreeBSD comes with a secure telnet that uses SRA secure
login.

Subject: RE: [newbie] Help me please.Software Raid on linux
for Newies Instructions. 10 easy steps.

Hi, These instructions are brief, and 7.2 tested, but should work much
the same way with 8 and 8.1. your question was about mirroring which is
slightly slower then a single drive, but you will have data redundency
(same info on two drives.)
RAID0  - splits data on to two drives for inproved performance.
RAID1  - Mirror data on more then one drive to create redundancy.
(slower)
RAID2  onwards, mixes mirroring and striping to give benefits of both in
different mixes, usually needs 3 or more drives.

I will concentraite on the first two RAID inplimentations.
1. Hook both your drives up.
2. Boot from MDK CDROM and select Expert install.
3. Choose Diskdrake when you get asked.
4. Create a 20MB partition of EXT2 on drive1, and point it to /boot.
(boot is tiny and doesn't benefit from Raid.)
5. Find the area on disk one that you want to be the first Raid-0 array,
and select Add to Raid It will be called md0 by default (md means
multiple disk)
you can then set what level of RAID you want. leave the chunksize of
64k. (its the size of strips accross the drives. 64k is a good default
for large and small files.)
6. Select equal size partition on drive 2. and Add to Raid select md0
for target.
7. Do the same on both drives with the swap, (ie create equal swap
partitions on each drive creating md1 for both..
8. Click the RAID tab in diskdrake click on  the RAID arrays free space
(md0) and choose REISERFS, (or whatever FS you want.) then do the same
for md1 except select linux Swap..
9. Set the mount point for md0 to / (ie the root partition).    I think
the swap will be allocated automatically.
10 Install linux as per normal from that point, MDK should do the rest
for you.

Thats it, when finished you will have your linux box booting in software
RAID, if you chose mirroring it will be a tiny bit slower then one drive
(because its writing data twice), but if you chose striping it will be
probably 10-60% faster then a single drive.

Hope that helps someone, I have written that as generic as I can in the
hope that it will help more then one person.

ATA 100 HDD 7200RPM, will it run faster than SCSI? Do
I need to setup anything when install Linux-Mandrack
8.0 or 8.1 on these HDD?
In cause 1 of them goes bad. How can I recover this
situation?
Thank you
Tuan

Re: [newbie] ATI XPERT 98 card

2001-04-09 Thread Tuan tran

I use this video card and have no problem @ 1024 X
768. I think it failed beacause you picked 3D mode. I
tried 1 time and got blank screen like you got. If you
choose automatic install, The program will let you
test graphic card at each mode.
Remember: do not try 3D mode @ Linux-Mandrake 7.2. It
doesn't improve display quality.

 Hello all,

I, myself, also just installed an ATI card, but
mine is the XPERT 98 version. It too, is listed in
the list of video cards to select from. It gave me
the option to change the resolution (the reason I
bought the card to start with because the internal
version left me stuck at 800 X 600). The monitor,
17 inches, is brand new as well. I chose the 1024 X
768 resolution and style for the monitor. Linux
rebooted itself, and I no longer see my graphical
interface showing the accounts I setup to log on
with, along with what GUI I wanted to use. I'm at a
black screen prompt asking for login name. How do I
bring my graphical log in method back?
Note: It did say that "your card will work well
with 3D using this version..." and "will work well
with 2D with this version..." - "which one do you
want?" I chose the 2D version. It also said, "I
can auto load X Windows for you - yes or no." I
 told it yes.

 Thanks for your time,

 Christopher.

 Anyways, did you
decompress the tar file you downloaded before trying
 to configure it
 (tar -zxvf apache_1.3.17.tar.gz).

 Hope this helps

Subject: [newbie] Problems Configuring Apache on LM
 7.2

I was tring to run configure on apache 1.3.17.
permissions are 777. I ran ./configure in the
 correct directory.
The response was "bash: ./configure: No such file
 or directory"
I am logged in as root, and the user and group
 are both root.
The first line of configure is # !/bin/sh, the
 same as other configure
that have been run, such as the configure for PHP
 which worked
perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas on what
 could be
  wrong here?
