Re: [newbie] MODEMS vs Winmodems
snip Joethe real winmodem problem is better explained below by the two selected quotes from Rick Moen's linuxmafia.com website: http://www.linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/ good link, thanks 'nother snip Theoretically, programmers could write substitute engine software for non-MS-Windows operating systems. This would have to be done separately for each OS and for each modem-type crippled in some distinctive way. Further, it would entail reverse-engineering each such design's programming interface, without cooperation from manufacturers who classify this as proprietary information. In any event, programmers seem highly unlikely to bother, because they find it far easier to buy real modems, instead. not to mention a jail term in the USA due to the DCMA. But is it possible? You betcha! A few words of caution first: You must chose an already empty partition. There is no easy way to preserve any existing data. Also, you are limited to four primary partitions per hard drive. This is a hardware thing, not a Windows or Linux thing. Again, for the sake of preserving your existing data if you're unsure of anything-- any doubt at all, abort before you commit your changes. There is lots of documentation out there about preparing your partitions for Linux. Try a search on Google for 'Linux Partition HOWTO'. Do an install in Expert mode. When you get to the point where you're selecting the your primary Linux partition, click the 'Type' button and you get a bunch of options, below the drop-down list of partition formats is another drop-down list that lets you chose between 'Primary' or 'Extended'. Localhost is your computer name, not a user name. You _can_ log in directly as root (that's the superuser's name), but it is recommended that you do everything as a user and su (switch user) to root only when you need to (e.g. when installing RPMs). I am getting lazy. I too have the CD's. I noticed when checking out the rpm's installable, installed windows nothing that I have installed is showing. If the RPM is on your system doing an upgrade manually will ignore or override RPM? I guess we are to assume that the RPM and manual installs if done correctly will place files in the same locations on the file system? I did find a site that explained the drawbacks of using RPM. Do you know of a way to get the items off of the CD's without using RPM's? I'm not too sure what you mean here. If you want to look _inside_ RPM packages, you can do this with mc (Midnight Commander), a console file manager. Tools like Mandrake's Software Manager, GNOME's gnoRPM and KDE's KPackage all interface with the RPM system, and so can correctly install RPMs. Upgrading Mandrake as a whole (e.g. from the CDs) respects the existing RPM database, and upgrades rather than replaces it. Also, you can use the console RPM app to install packages. Kathy Peter Rymshaw wrote: The serious problems with gnome seemed to be fixed (I did find still another gnome RPM. Re: [newbie] letting computer run overnight without overheating
it has been my understanding for some long time that Linux (as a server OS first) was designed to run 24/7 and infact will run some services in the middle of the night (3AM or so) that speed it up the rest of the time, like updating the locate data so it can find files faster On Thursday 20 September 2001 09:09, you wrote: Eric Lin wrote: Most computers in school are ran 24/7, but they are mostly all air conditioned and mostly are not placed near books. Does anyone know if it is safe for a home user to leave his/her computer on continuously? It can be safe, presuming you take suitable precautions and understand the hazards and tradeoffs. (And, offering advice on a subject like this can be risky. You need to understand the risks and make your own decision. The following may not include all the factors or information you need to consider. There are several things to consider: * Safety of the computer * Safety of your home * Energy consumption Safety of the computer: A potentially big topic, there is a difference of opinion -- some people think that leaving your computer on all the time will prolong its life, as opposed to turning it on and off. Each on and off cycle tends to strain various components associated with the computer (like power supplies, the CRT (monitor), etc.) Leaving things like disk drives running all the time will tend to wear them out. Ideally, you want to configure some things about your system -- set the power managment features of your computer to: * spin down your hard drive after some appropriate time (1 to 5 minutes of no activity?) * put your monitor into suspend or whatever they call it after some appropriate time * suspend your computer afer an appropriate time (contents of RAM is written to the disk, and the processor is stopped or slowed down significantly) You might also consider getting a Transmeta Crusoe chip as your next CPU, in a motherboard that can support its power management features. The enemies (sp?) of electronic equipment are heat and surges. Surges come from turning the equipment on and off (as well as from external sources). Heat comes from leaving the equipment on. Safety of your home: Make sure your computer is positioned in a place where ventilation is adequate, and ventilation ports in the cabinets (especially the CRT) are not blocked, especially not blocked by combustible material like piles of paper. Maintaining good ventilation and avoiding heat build up helps to prolong the life of the computer and your home (from fire). But, nothing can guarantee that something won't happen to cause a fire, so take appropriate precautions. A fire alarm is important. I haven't heard of fires being started by a home computer, but it is an electronic device which uses electricity, creates heat, includes combustible components, and includes components (plastics, for example) which can produce poisonous gases (phosgene) during combustion. (Note that all of the same things are true of your TV, stereo, microwave, etc.) You may not want to have the computer running when no one is at home. Energy Consumption: If you have a computer with a 300 watt power supply that happens to use all 300 watts continuously (unlikely, especially if no one is using the computer), and a monitor, external modem, whatever, you could conceivably use 500 watts of electriciy per hour, which at $.10/kwh would be $1.20 per day or $36 a month in excess energy costs, and the creation of pollution etc. associated with the creation of that electricity, depending on how it is made. Realistically, I think it is more likely that a computer uses 100 watts or less (much less if in standby or suspend) with the monitor and so forth turned off. So now maybe you are looking at $7 / month in power costs. (The 100 watts is strictly a guess -- I've never tried to measure it or seen any published figures. -- I happen to run 5 computers during the day and 2 on a 7/24 basis, and I don't think I see an extra $30 per month in cost. (But I've been doing it for so long, I don't really have valid old figures to compare against.) Conclusion: I can't make the conclusion for you, you have to consider the hazards, risks, and costs, and make your own decision. Others may have additional points that I've overlooked. Re: [newbie] Accessing my files at home ??
my advice is to run appache on the home computer, set any folders you want to be allowed to get into in the config, and run a connection thru a Dynamic DNS server, so you could log into linxbox.ods.dyn.dns.org (or whom ever you sign up for the service with, you can search google for dynamic dns servers and find a few). that way, you dial in, connect to the dynamic dns server to set the name to yor current dns, and you can go from there and look like you were savy enough to have created AOL if you had the time a few years ago. it really is easy (about one saterday day to learn how, since if you have installed all the toys with Mandrake 8.0 powerpack it will already be installed and waititng for you to setup the configuration. you can then set up a cron job to check the dialin connectiopn and connect to the Dynamic dns server and make sure it is correctly updated. you can also set your PPP conncetion to redial if the signal is dropped, and the cron job will reconncet to the DNS and update automagiclly. I personally think that you might then want to check out PHP-Nuke after you get the server setup and your folders accessable. If it's not, the network cards don't work, and the tcp/ip protocols on thserver aren't enabled, thereby eliminating the Internet coneection. That's one of the big reasons that many people find an old 486 or early generation Pentium pc and set it up as the Internet server or Gateway/Router. The only way around this is as I suggested or to by an actual router and configure it to do the same job as your windows box. One of the nice features of using an old PC is that there are a large number of linux-based gateway/routers that can also be used to act as a firewall, thus protecting you from most types of hacks. You can also run a web-site on many of them. Lanman On Sunday 16 September 2001 02:19 pm, you wrote: is it true that i have to have the server comp. I sware I do NOT have the power to stop any of this. We did NOT elect this president. I am no more to blame for the things the Bush family has perpetuated on the world than the farmer in the field in Afganistan, only trying to feed his family. Re: [newbie] Re: [LINUX_Newbies] USA TERROR ATTACK!!!!
my first thought was that they had played a little too much with M$flight sim, since when I get bored with it I too fly into the wtc to crash and get out of the game. a few too many hours with M$ Flight sim, and they would not have that much trouble spotting the target and knowing how to fly (not land or takeoff mind you) a passenger Jet. I disagree. People hate us because we are successful. (microsoft comes to mind) My thoughts are that the US needs to obliterate a few countries to get the point across that we will not tolerate this type behavior against ourselves or our allies. (assuming we actually have any) and that sure did end the problem with Iraq didn't it? no? you mean Ben-Laden is mad that we did not get out of Sudi-Arabia after we wooped ass on Iraq (and isn't it intersting that IRQ problems have the same constanates and IRaQ? and most the hardware problem I run inot are cuased by IRQs? is co-inky-dink? I think not. This is yet another stereotype that I had expected. Why are Americans, on the whole, so belligerent? Serving a military career appears to be the best way to get into government in the USA. With presidents like Eisenhower (who was a general) and Bush (Snr, who held a high position in the CIA), it is no surprise that US foreign policy has been so confrontational during the past fifty years. What scares me most is that people actually _vote_ for these guys and not for somebody who is more responsible. I am being a realist here. If world leaders were as emotional as you are here we would have wiped each other out through a global war. I said that I sympathise with the victims' families, and that I don't condone such violence. I stand by that. However, is 10,000 dead people really that many, when you take into account that US foreign policy is responsible for the suffering and deaths of many millions worldwide? Read my other posts in this thread for details on this. Do you really believe that you can fight fire with fire? Violence begets violence, and the first to suffer are the innocent. This has been seen time and time again in wars worldwide, including the two world wars, the Korean War, the Third Indochinese War (often called the Vietnam War), Iraq and the Balkans wars. In today's age of guerilla warfare, drug trafficking and terrorism, the distinction between soldier and innocent has blurred to the stage where traditional military strategy does not work, unless you wish to massacre entire villages (as American troops have done in Korea and Vietnam). We need to tackle the _root_ of the problem. The main root of crime is poor education and poverty. Therefore the best way to tackle crime is to improve education and the standard of living. Similarly, the root of these bombings is US allowance and support of practices which lead to poverty and brutal, authoritarian rule. The US government (not necessarily the people) supposedly has ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but only for their own people. They couldn't care less about the world's underprivileged, because exploiting them can lead to the pursuit of happiness for Americans. The United States government gives about 1% of its annual budget as foreign aid, far lower than any other industrialised nation, despite it having the largest economy in the world. The Bill and Belinda Gates foundation donated more money towards world health issues in 2000 than did the US government. The hallmark of over-capitalism is massive inequity, and we are seeing this occur both within and outside the USA. Many Americans appear to be afraid of mentioning that point, despite the fact that their children cannot receive a decent education in government schools. I read recently that the education system in a particular state (I forget which one, I think it started with P) was bankrupt, and at the same time Microsoft was auditing them for software licenses. Of course, with such a cash-strapped system, they had been forced to pirate software, and now they owe millions to M$. I shall now expect to be labelled as a communist simply because I am concerned for my fellow human beings :-) Note that while I'm focussing on the USA here (because of the terrorist attacks), this hardly means that other nations have a clean sheet. On the contrary, all of the advanced democracies (including my own country, Australia) are to blame, but the USA is by far the worst of a bad bunch. If you wish to know where I'm coming from, I'm writing with several years of geography, economics, government and international relations training under my belt. There is far more to this than the Anglo-American neoliberal standpoint (which is what they usually teach you in schools in nations like the US and Australia), and it is important to try to approach the problem from different angles in order to understand it properly. I would hardly call myself an expert, but I feel that I know
Re: [newbie] Re: [LINUX_Newbies] USA TERROR ATTACK!!!!
On a couple of notes here, as an American who has served in the Military, and been in Spec. Forces, and studied a little current events and history, I wonder if we could appear to have learned something from WW1 and WW2, in that the way to _END_ (regardless of the military outcome) the war is to give hope and a future to those whom considered you the enemy. Look at the marshal plan and what it did for Europe after WW2. Do you believe the proud German people would have not started another war in 20 years if they did not recognize that they had more hope with commerce than bullets? I wish we had the sense to help the common folks in the countries that will be attacked BEFORE we have to attack them. Making a peace that would last with the same people whom are still upset about the crusades would not be _easy_, but it might be worthwhile. The real problem (as I see it) is that they might have to agree that I have as much right to the air to breath as they do. On the same but slightly different note, if MY genocide is the only thing YOUR religion will allow for ME, then where do I draw the line as far as YOUR genocide? If you want to kill me, you are gonna have a bloody mess on your hands before one of us is dead, and what happens afterwards with both the bodies? I see a lot of room for comparison between the Vikings in the first thousand years AD and these terrorists. How hard is it to fight a foe that believes that by dyeing in order to kill you they get to go to heaven? War on any Nation that believes that my children do not have the right to exist, and is willing to raise and wage war in order to prevent my children from living and sharing the air, is not only justified, it may be the only choice other than laying down and dyeing. The real question at some point becomes, at what point do we acknowledge that we only have those choices. I have never wished to killsomeone, but even if the war has questionable beginings, (and I don't think to many questions will be asked by history any more than we asked if we were correct to battle Japan in WW2) I would not hasitate to kill anyone that I believed intend to harm myself or my family. I would LOVE to see (and the chance of this happening are damn slim) Pres. Bush decide to back the world court and allow American and any other head of state to be tried for war crimes. I am pretty sure that might give the enemy a chance to show themselves, and release some frustrations on the proper people in an lawfull and orderly fashion, and not on people considered to be innocent. I was upset by the Afgan Gov. statement warning the US Gov that if INNOCENT AND SINLESS people are killed, more suicide bombings will occur. I am pretty sure that some innocent and sinnless peple (as sinless anyway) were killed. I do agree that if you protect the people whom want to kill me, you might be protecting people whom you do not really have the ability to protect. in fact, by my standards, if someone is shooting at me, and hidding behind you, and you say, do not shoot in my direction, because the person behind me trying to kill you is a friend of My Gods, then if you do not denounce HIS right to kill me, I may as well send you both to meet your God. I want peace as much as anyone, and have more disrespect for my countries Goverment than most ex-GIs and I have been out of the Military for 20 some years, but if I can not help you to respect me and allow me my peace, then I will treat you as equal to how you treat me. If I am not allowed life, then neither are you. No Person should be more important or less allowed life and joy than any other. One Of the greatest problems I am aware of in America, and the point of MY hositilty towards my own contry is that I FIRMLY believe that a persons right to joy should trump a corporations right to profits, and in America, not only have our Courts and Goverments decided that profit is MUCH more important than indivduales right to joy, but we have made laws that prevent a corporation form being put out of business, even if the intentally kill people for the sake of profit, and even if the profit (after expensises including exec. salary) is miniscule and not enough to compensate for the life taken. WE must have accountablility even in OUR leaders. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] A meaningfull Subject-line would help us all
so why don't you save Civilme's posts as html files, and post them on a free website like geocities?. On Tuesday 11 September 2001 14:12, you had thoughts to the concept of: I do something similar to what you are talking about. I roll my own help files, by saving those posts that I think will be of any help in the future. In the open source spirit, I read them or at least skim over them enough to get an idea of what to title them. I then save them as a file (with my new title and the ext _info). What you are suggesting, is probably not going to happen and even if it did, I would continue to make my own titles, so that they will have *my* idea of what they should be titled, rather than someone elses. After all, *I* will be the one that has to find it when I need it. The big problem is that, as a reference-archive, it sometimes stinks - wth subject headers such as 'Lets go' and 'Nearly got it' Why not pay this superb list the respect it deserves by supressing the comedian that lurks inside all of us and *always* use a meaningfull Subject description. Then, even in years to come, we could fairly easily find some obscure technical solution or whatever. All elementary really. If you disagree (perhaps you believe that Linux *should* be as difficult as possible to learn and that even these helpfull messages should be cryptic) then fair enough. I'm sorry I mentioned it. If, on the other hand, you feel that we might all benefit from this brilliant suggestion then why not give it a try. Oh yes - and tell a friend :-) Incidently, it's normal to courteously ask someone not to use HTML so why not ask them to use a meaningfull header line for future posts. Anything to make life easier. not a problem, delete the lin4win folder, set the BIOS to boot from the CD and allow it to setup the partitions automagiclly, send your friend a few sticks of ram, and tell him not to install over windows, but to give linux it's own file system. emulation is bound to slow down any system On Tuesday 11 September 2001 18:47, you had thoughts to the concept of: Someone I am trying to help via email has installed Mandrake, one of the later versions, over his windoz. He did manage to send me what his df replied, The main thing I noted he has a partition for lin4win (sp) and I wonder if that is what happens when installing over windows option ?? My last few problems are as follows; 1) After removing the panel and right-click menu, I no longer have a simple way to Log-Off the users, short of using the CTRL-ALT-Backspace keystroke. I assume that since log-offs can be done by clicking a button on the panel, that there is a command that will work, but I have no idea what it is. The logout command - when run from a console will not work, and it suggests that I use exit, which only closes the console. What I need is a command that will start the log-off process by using an icon. 2) I need to eliminate the right-click option when the mouse-pointer is positioned over an icon. The disk originally had two partitions on it before this check. /etc/fstab reports the disk still has two partitions. is fstab a static file or is it dynamically created based on how my computer is currently set up? Do I need to alter it? I then ran mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda1 and it proceeded to format the drive, which appeared to go ok. But going back to fdisk, it still reports the disk is fat32. about a million people are going to tell you (and they are correct) that the GIMP is every bit as good as photoshop, and they do not have the US gov. put people in jail for talking about how poor their encryption is under the DMCA. you might also consider that while dreamweaver sites appear just hunky dory in IE5.x, they are NOT standard HTML and do NOT appear the same in all browsers, which is one of the goals of the HTML spec. I am not all that familiar with the abilities of UltraDev, so I really can not comment on that. but like I say I am not a big fan of flash, bells and whistles taking up the bandwidth when really what i want is informantion Plug and Pray in Mandrake is pretty good, (try kudsu) but it uses the pci spec, (as opposed to M$ closed source (protected secret) PNP specs) and so you have to turn off plug and pray aware OS in the computer BIOS so that the BIOS will go ahead and initialize the cards and assign Irq. in your case, I would think you might have to have the BIOS assign (or reserve) the IRQ for your network cards isa slot. What happens is this, I turn the box on, it boots up, does the Harddrake probe, then goes into the detected new hardware. I hit enter to configure the device, it tells me it is about to, then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I can reboot the computer with ctl-alt-del and that's about it. I don't have any trouble running X from the command line, if I skip the detecting new hardware stage. Any advice? Ryan Steffes It is pretty obvious that you have a conflict in IRQ between your graphics card and your video. Windows assigns them different interrupts through Plug'NPray, but linux does not, depending instead on the BIOS and on the PCI 2.0 specification that says devices can share interrupts (not all devices comply though the 3C905 models do). The easiest solution is to move the network card to a different slot in your box or to play with the assignment of IRQs to PCI slot numbers in the BIOS setup. If the network card is next to the video card, there is your problem. If the network card is next to the video card, there is your problem. that gateway is for the computer you are on, so the gateway would be the IP your ISP assigns via dhcp, the gateway to the client computers (the rest of your home network that is connecting to the Internet) would be the linux box eth0 IP. Re: Re: [newbie] Mounting CD burner
SCSI Emulation is in two parts--first a message to the kernel to tell it to assume emulation is done Second is a modprobe of scsi and a link to the appropriate SCSI device The first part is simple in /etc/lilo.conf or in drakboot (Control Center Boot Config) make sure you have this in the append hdc=ide-scsi if for example it is hdc. Now in /dev you need to do the following cd /dev rm cdrom2 ln -s scd0 cdrom2 if, for example, the /etc/fstab entry uses /dev/cdrom2 for your CDRW. Finally somewhere you need a modprobe ide-scsi It can be dropped int the next to last line of /etc/rc.local (an extra one won't hurt if your system is already doing one) It is a little known fact that ordinaty plain vanilla CDROMs can also be scsi-emulated in the same manner. Our tests over the past 5 months show this works just as well as the dual structure we now support. Civileme On Monday 03 September 2001 23:45, Mark wrote: I am having the same problem as David. In my very humble opinion, this e-mail list is one of the best sources of support you are likly to find for any OS and if help can be had, you is likely to find it here. but first, we need som more info about the problem. which type of install did you chose? (recomended or expert? server, developer or workstation/desktop? I'd place the USER fault at about 80+%, apps maybe ~10% (more if it's Windoze, less for open source like Linux), and the OS last at less than 5%. I consider use or ignorance of Win(tel)-hardware or other marginal hardware as a USER fault, as I do the introduction of the closed source and/or proprietary drivers they almost always require, even with Windoze. Is that a useful opinion? You be the judge. BUT, I've experienced over the years that when I approach problems as USER (me!) then application then OS, my results are far better at getting a resolution, than the reverse. I've also noticed that those that seem to always have the most problems, always want'a try the reverse order, considering lastly, that maybe they just might be the problem, and inventing all kind's of misconceptions to back it up.. It's called the interface between the keyboard, chair, and mouse ; Yeah, YOU, and me. !! If you need OS support or hand holding, I suspect you're approaching problems bass-ackwards. As always, YMMV ;) I suspect if you ask a support person, they'd classify it as USER USER user ;~ Yeah, that's why I love this mailing list! - it's awesome, esp when you spend hours or maybe even days going around in circles and then someone points you in the right direction. I agree, and certainly in my case anyway, its ALWAYS the user that's the problem. I don't know enough about how linux works to even consider thinking it might be an OS or app problem! this reminds me of not having plug and pray aware OS to OFF in BIOS. and maybe while in BIOS setting the ISA IRQ to reserve it. It's also important to understand that there's no answers available from this list, only opinions. Some of them just happen to be, or are intended to be helpful ;-} *Tom Brinkman On Wednesday 22 August 2001 19:20, Tim Holmes wrote: Well the only response to the message you sent was the best on. The reason why I didn't respond to your post. The solutions that would cause the least amount of headaches would be to buy a REAL modem. Even if you did get the WinModem working, you'd be sending posts asking why it disconnects like it does. All because poorly written beta drivers for something never intended to run under a real operating system. But, just to humor you, since you seem to feel neglected at the lists failure to help you, I'll offer some help for your problem. You may need a newer and/or recompiled kernel to accept the module for your modem. Not knowing which version of Mandrake, or what kernel you're using, I couldn't speculate as to what is needed. When you found that your modem actually has a driver for Linux, still doesn't mean it will work for your machine, with your kernel, or even with Mandrake. Mandrake is becoming more and more popular, and more mainstreamed (As much as Linux can be at this point in time.) but those drivers were written and compiled for RedHat 6.2 or RedHat 7.0. Maybe even Debian, so you may even need to compile the driver yourself in hopes of getting it to work under your Mandrake machine. But let's not get into the state of mind where people think if there's a driver, especially beta, then it's supported under Linux. And this is a Users List. Just because you post an question, doesn't mean it's going to be responded to. If you don't get a response, try posting it to the EXPERT list. Or try going to MandrakeCampus.com, or going through more doc pages. I've posted quite a few questions to the board that nobody replies to. Either they don't read it, or they have no clue on how to help. Keep that in mind as well as take some recommendations with a grain of salt. What worked for them, may not work for you. Is there some way that I can setup a harddrive partition to be a gig or something, copy the installation there and install it? I'd try downloading the iso and mounting it. Disk Copy or Toast Pro (even if you have no burner) should be able to mount it. Then run the mounted iso as if it's a CD and when it asks where you want to install, tell it to go to the new partition you made for Linux (I'm assuming linuxppc will ask you that, I don't know first hand). If you have to buy Toast Pro, you're probably better off just buying a copy of Linuxppc. I'm thinking of getting a powerbook and putting linuxppc on it myself. Matt __ Do You Yahoo!?
