... very entertaining, I was taken in totally, because as a month old newbie I went through that phase ... bought some Mandrake 10.1 disks ($6), they worked OK at first, but then degraded ... ended up with: (1) .. an old Mandrake Red Hat 6.0 that works on my desktop .. (2) .. a SUSE 9.2 working in VMWare on my laptop ... ended up downloading the 3.3gig .iso file, turns out VMWare can read the .iso file right off my hard drive, don't have to fool with burning CD's etc .. (3) ... the struggle getting from command mode to KDE in (1) above really taught me the Linux (UNIX) fundamentals, plus reading your wonderful mailing list each day ... (4) .. once you get into KDE, everything's a breeze ... [newbie] One step forward, two backward ...
Guys ... .. well, was getting pretty comfortable with my VMware installation of 10.1 on my AMD64 laptop (256m3g ram 60gb hd, 2.0gH), was booting into CLI, then startx (from root) into KDE, 1024x768, installed Firefox, all going well ... decided it was time to change the 3 to a 5 in the inittab file to boot up into KDE directly ... then all went down hill from there ... ... booted up fine, but from my user, not root, and booted into Konquerer where I had made no settings of any kind, no Firefox, Bookmarks, etc ... could not change the 5 back to a 3 or make any other changes in inittab, because no permission from user level, have to be in root ... could find no way to getback to KDE ... on each reboot try the system degraded, files no longer accessable, etc ...after many failed tries of getting back to root, I deleted the entire installation, delete/defragged/created a new VM platform, attempted to re-installed 10.1... 30 seconds into bootup I get error trying to load second stage ram disk ... last few install log items read: * trying to load /sysroot/tmp/image/stage2/mdkint_stage2.bz2 as ramdisk * mounting /dev/ram3 on /sysroot/tmp/stage2 as type ext2 * fopen(stage1.c:383) failed: I/O error * unsetting automatic ... have tried all the options I could think of, no luck ... looking at the install log, everything seems to be going fine until the failure ... ... should have asked you guys, you probably could have gotten me back to KDE just fine, I wouldn't be in this fix ... HK I can understand the installer having a problem with this drive. You might be able to do something in the expert mode, but you might also delete some of your data... I would be tempted to back things up, wipe the drive, and start over. Create one partition for Windows, and leave the rest for the installer to play with. Another option would be to add a second drive for Linux. Let Windows keep the first drive, and have the installer install to the second hard drive. I didn't realize you were running 6.0, but it induces that nostalgic feeling in me. If, by any chance, you are dual-booting Linux and another OS, an easy way to transfer files is to create an extra FAT32 partition in the middle to share files. Most OS's can read and write to FAT32. HK I wish you would have told us you were running 6.0 - we could have pointed you to where you could download the CD images for 10.1 for free, or purchesed them fairly cheap. (You can download the first 3 CD's from the Internet.) Now, as far as transfering files between Windows and Linux, it depends on how you are running Linux. If you are running it in a VMware window, then you may want to create a share on the windows machine, and use smb4k to map the share on Linux. You can alsu use the mount command from the command line interface, but smb4k is probably going to work better for you at this point. If you are dual booting Windows and Linux on a machine, you can mount the windows partition directly in Linux. In fact, the installer usualy will set this up for you. Diskdrake will also do it for you. If you are using the NT file system, then it will be mounted read only - you can transfere files to Linux, but there are some problems writing to NT file systems. (Has this changed?) There are no problems reading/writing FAT file systems. Depending on the nVidia card you have, 10.1 may work with it out of the box, or you may have to install extra drivers. There have been a lot of messages about this. I don't have personal experence with the cards that require this. As far as your install problems directly to the hardware, instead of installing in VMware, we should be able to work around them. The bit thing is to describe the hardware, and be willing to try a couple of options during install. Most people don't need to do this, but some hardware requires more effort then others... I usualy have less trouble installing Linux then I do Windows, unless I have one of the restore CDs for the machine that basicly restores a working image to the hard drive. If it's FAT32, no problems whatsoever. But Windows cannot write to Linux (I think it can't even see other filesystems than NT and FAT - but I'm not sure, have never used Windows). Another solution : If you have the dough, by an external USB hard disk with at least one FAT32 partition. Should be accessible from either OS. Glad you got the other things sorted out. (as root, I know that much) HK On your laptop, the first step is to enable file sharing in XP. Then you have to deside how much of your XP drive you want to share. You may want to create just one directory for moving files between the two systems. You may also have to make some adjustments on the firewall in XP to let Linux connect from inside VMware. I think this is still covered in the VMware documentation. In any case, it is the same as setting up XP to share a directory with other machines in the local network. It also helps if you use the same workgroup name in XT and smb4k. As a test, you should be able to see the directory you have set up from your desktop system when both it, and the laptop are on the same network. If the two machines running Windows can not share files, then Linux running in VMware is probably going to have problems as well. A second way would be to configure Samba under Linux, and have it share out a directory. You would have to use XP to transfere files between this directory and the XP file system. One quick way to set up a directory for sharing is to double-click on the hard drive icon on the desktop, navigate to the directory you would like to share. Right click on it, pick Properties, and then Local Net Shating. You will probably have to enter the root password, and enable this. It may also ask to install some packages. Let it. Kaj, I don't have a GUI yet, that's my main problem .. rebooted, when I got to sign-in, typed mcc then my root password, got type root pasword for maintenace ... one other thing, the other day I got locked up, had to bale out without logoff or exit ... since then, during boot-up, have gotten this (dev/hda5 is my root directory): dev/hda5 contains a file system with errors, check forced dev/hda5 unattached inode 108633 dev/hda5 unexpected inconsistancy, run fsck manually give root password for maintenance... ... maybe need to start over, re-install Mandrake ??? Kaj, he hasn't managed to boot into X at all - that's where this all started. My theory was that there was a problem with graphics drivers and/or monitor and that he should run the drakes from the cli to get them set up right, but he hasn't managed to do that, either. Thanks, h k Where do you live ? I'm a little confused about what you're trying to do... (1) Why connect from the CLI ? - If you absolutely must then (as root) : ifconfig eth0. That is if you use ethernet as your interface ? - Otherwise I'd recommend the GUI way for newbies, just : mcc, then give root password. Go to Network Internet and make your choices. (2) I don't have Nvidia, but I think you can use it in fb mode (frame buffer) without the Nvidia drivers until you get things sorted out. (3) I don't thing you need to run xconfigurator, only XFdrake. (4,5,6) You'll need to run XFdrake as root. Lastly, a dumb question : Do you have a x server running ? [newbie] How get from dos mode into KDE mode?
... sent this last night, but think to the wrong place ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ... so far I have: (1) made a 2.5 meg Linux Ext2 partition and a .5 meg Linux SWAP partition with Partition Magic ... (2) Using the Mandrake installation disks, got to Congratulations installation is complete! ... installed about 400 meg of files, including KDE, GNOME and associated graphics stuff ... (3) have successfully logged on into what I call the dos-like mode, been able to use ls /bin -al |less, |more linuxconf man man cd, su, exit Xconfigurator (struggle picking a comparable video card, finally found one) (4) can reboot back and forth between Windows 2000, XP and Linux on same machine with no problem, everything still works just fine ... (5) have not been able to get out of the dos mode and into the windows mode, namely KDE ... how do I do that ??
