I've got the same crap going on here. In the last three CDs I've
 burned

 * The CPU meter hits the roof. It maintains 99% usage the entire
time. Under 8.2 burning duties never exceeded 1.5%.
 * A 16MB fifo buffer while burning a 600MB CD, stuggles to keep
full, rarely maintaining 25% content. During my last try, it
emptied 90 times! The drive was 6% away from having to employ
burnfree. The CD before that did use burnfree 15 times.

 Other points:

 * xcdroast, eroaster, and cdrecord get the same results (duh)
 * My USB SmartMedia reader is device 0,0,0. My burner is 1,2,0.
 * Nero had no problems in WinXP with the same hardware and media.

 What's going on?

Jason, I changed the permissions in pics to include execute

[newbie] autologin to wrong desktop

2002-01-25 Thread Harry Ellis

My Mandrake 7.2 automatically boots to user Harry, which
is good,
and Enlightenment, which is inconvenient. I want to end up
in KDE.

It always did until I played around with Enlightenment for
awhile. The
odd thing is that if I ever change users, KDE shows as the
default,
and the computer loads into KDE when I type my password
without me
having to change anything,

1. I have logged out of Enlightenment, gone into Harry
with KDE, played
around, logged out, unchecked and rechecked save session,
and shutdown. The
autologin on a new boot goes directly to Enlightenment.

2. If I change to Harry from anywhere, KDE is the choice
showing. I never
have to select it. It loads KDE. But not at boot time.

3. When I looked in /etc./sysconfig/desktop with an editor,
it says KDE.

4. If I go through KDE Control to systemlogin manager,
there is no
convenience, as apparently there is in later KDE's. (Mine
is 2.0). I can
find no gui for autologin, if that's what it's called.

5. Looked at /home/harry/.wmrc with an editor and it says
KDE.

Now I am willing to live without Autoload if I can go
straight to my penguin
heads (the technical term for those who didn't know it) so I
can choose the
user.But I don't know how
to do this either. That would be quicker than going in and
then out of
Enlightenment. But I would prefer an autologin to Harry with
KDE.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

Harry the mildly depressed

 Seems to be looking for:

Do you haev the kernel source code loaded? Often there are includes in
/usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm that symlink to /usr/src/linux/
include, and if so, you'll need the kernel source - or at least the
kernel headers installed.

 Hi Harry,
I remember this happened to me one time also. What I did was remove the
package (kpackage, as root) and reinstall it. Then it worked.
I use it only to show what's new, then I download things by hand, one at
the time (online time = money here).

For instance, I just downloaded the kernel-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm package
and installed that offline. I don't take chances with things like
that. (btw, the upgrade went purrrfectly)

Patti,

It sounds as if you haven't removed the version of Netscape that came
with the ML distribution. You need to do an rpm -e netscape, from a
console window, as root. Then, you need to point your launcher to the
file /opt/netscape/netscape. That should do it. I had the same thing
happen with my distribution.

Hold the shift key down when selecting the file to download. Sometimes,

You should be able to right click on any part that is left, and check

Re: [newbie] 7.1 Upgrade MBR of HDA

2000-07-24 Thread Harry Flaxman

First of all, fdisk /mbr wouldn't fix the damage that the installer had
done. I got an invalid media type on drive c:. The directories
wouldn't list. Norton 2000 wouldn't fix it either. How do you figure
it is user error, when GRUB wiped my mbr and it wasn't repairable. I
tried all to get that drive back, but couldn't.

Linux or Mandrake (7 or 7.1) problem at all).

In this case if he had successfully run (DOS) fdisk /mbr, his
system couln't possibly have booted GRUB, since the entire mbr
would have been overwritten, and Winblows would then boot, since
if it finds a blank mbr on boot, it writes one. Since he can still
'see' his Windoze files from Linux, a Winsux re-install isn't
neccessary.. a proper fdisk /mbr from a clean dos prompt is.

there's 3 levels of dos prompt in Winsux... DosMode, Dos by
mashing F8 on boot, and a real DOS 7.1 prompt obtained by
preventing any win files from loading during the initial boot up.
The latter is suitable for flashing your bios, or successfully
overwriting the master boot record, or running old DOS games that
W9x doesn't get along with anymore.

The boot disk made during a Winblows install should produce a
 clean DOS 7.1 prompt (W95 = DOS7.0). If that's not available
there's sites on the Net where a DOS (5.0 thru 6.22) boot disk
 containing fdisk can be downloaded.

[newbie] 7.1 Upgrade MBR of HDA

2000-07-22 Thread Harry Flaxman

Well, here's another problem I ran into upgrading to 7.1. I tried
specifying LILO when DrakConf asked me which bootloader to use. The
lilo configuration returned a syntax error. I went ahead and chose
GRUB. when I booted to my first hard driveLILO stopped after the I,
so I used my handy dandy dos boot disk to do a fdisk /mbr. C: drive
returned an error, and I couldn't get a directory listing on it. Upon
rebooting...I got GRUB, and tried to choose windows to boot from, and I
get a loop...no winslows boot. GRUB booted me into linux, and upon
examining HDA1 there, all of the winslows data files are accessible. I
just can't get fdisk to do anything to the drive now, and can't boot
into winslows. There are a couple of utilities there that I use from
time to time.

Has anyone run into a similar situation?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response Torrey. This is the third time I've wiped
winslows in a year. I have all my critical stuff on cd/rw..so it won't
be a big deal getting what I need back. I hate to use that os
anyway...it's too slow and inflexible. Norton 2000 couldn't fix the
GRUB problem. I just reformatted the whole 20 gigs. Let this be a
warning to anyone upgrading a dual boot system to 7.1.

but Windows was inaccessible. I could boot DOS with a floppy disk, but the
C: drive was no longer readable from DOS. Using System Commander, I was
able to restore the Windows boot record, but System Commander can't do
anything with GRUB (it recognizes LILO just fine). Quite a mess. I can
boot Windows normally again, but have to use a boot floppy for Linux. I
tried resetting GRUB, and also using LILO, but it just trashes the boot

GRUB does is apparently not so easy to undo, and there is no way I can find
to uninstall it. I have *never* had these problems with any other
distribution, including Mandrake 7.0 Seems rather irresponsible of
Mandrake to use alpha software for its default boot loader, but that's what
they did. Sure doesn't seem ready for prime time to me.

[newbie] RPMs Causing Grief

2000-07-16 Thread Harry Flaxman

I have been having problems with install RPMs where it seems the install
is abending and hogging memory on my machine. I've recently tried
installing the KDE2 rpm's on my machine. If I do it from a console, I
eventually get a message 'can't load interpreter' scrolling down the
screen, and the rpm install just stops. I have to force a shutdown,
which is scary. This happens with other rpm's as well.

If I install from kpackage, I get the same thing. X-windows crashes
back to the console with the message, 'can't load interpreter'. It
appears, by watching xosview, that all my physical and swap memory gets
full.

Am I missing a switch here to install these things properly?

Thanks.

Hi Charles,

Yes, my provider helpdesk says they do use PAP. Pls excuse unclear wording
in my letter. As for trying each and any setting in all their
combinations... well, I would prefer to know what I am doing and why, and
my time is somehow limited... That's why I paid for "official" Mandrake
hoping I would get some E-mail support. Oh yes.

Besides, IMHO default configuration should work or at least be not too far
from working one. And - yes, I do know about help button ;) in more than
just one or two different systems... Didn't find right answer there but
sure tried before asking Support (which didn't answer) and now asking this
group. As well as did several web searches and found lot's of questions
about the same problem but quite few real answers... My guess is that lot's
of potential Linux users might be scared away and not asking/trying anymore
after being unable even do this simple thing - connect to their Internet
providers using default (or close to default) configuration and methods.

Thanks for trying to help, anyway.

I have absolutely the same problem, and unfortunately increasing timeout

Unfortunately Mandrake support is very slow to respond - if ever, don't

popularity
is playing bad scaling games with Mandrake... So hopefully somebody who
has already solved this dialup problem will please explain what to do.

One thing is sure - there definitely _is_ nasty Dialup problem in Mandrake

Re: [newbie] partition (drive) access (Dana)

2000-07-09 Thread Harry Flaxman

Charles,

I just repartitioned that drive that I was having problems with. I put the swap
partition at the end of the drive and the windows partition at the beginning.
All of my problems have disappeared. Windows always recognizes that drive now.
Maybe it's because it is a large drive, I don't know. I just know that that
solved my problems. Running dual with Windows 98 SE, and ML 7.0.

Windows could care less when you install it or were you install it.
On diferent drives and systems I have bootable Win partitions on the
beginning, middle, and ends of the drive mixed in between BeOS, Linux and
 multiple versions of Win.
Win might like to think it is the boss but what it doesn't know won't
 hurt it.

   Alan,

Thanks. I am able to reformat under Windows and copy files to it, but
whenever linux is run, Windows loses it. It is strange. Like I say, it
seems like a m$ bug of some sort. I have checked the partition and it
   is not hidden.

I guess that's what I've been looking to do so that the Alsa sound

I originally configured. my Mandrake 7.0 accidentally with NO SWAP
device. It was misconfigured and somehow the system thought it was on
hda6, which it is not. I have repartitioned one of my hard drives ,
hdc1, to be the swap file. The fstab entry is proper. The device has
been partitioned and formatted under DOS. I have tried this with no
formatting and formatting. I get an error message that the kernal
doesn't support the filesystem swap. hdc1 is not mounted, and the OS
goes to turn on swapping and fails. If I look at linuxconf under
KDE.it shows the device being set up for swap. I get no swapping at
all, and my system just keeps grabbing real ram until it fills up.

Oh yes, I have tried mkswap and get an error that 130048 is larger than
device which has 0 size.

Wondering if there were any tips on this one, that someone could give
me.

Thanks.

the small internal speaker that plugs in the ASUS P5A motherboard does
not seem to be operational. The only reason I miss it is that I can no

clueless as to where I should go to resolve it.

Hello all,

I was messing with...ahem...learning about different XF86config settings.
The last one I tried was invalid. This I know because now when Linux

it to get out of the loop it is in. Is there a way that I can override the
automatic booting into X at startup?

Any Help much appreciated!

[newbie] Netscape a memory hog?

1999-09-04 Thread harry ellis

Once in awhile in Netscape, especially when offline, the system freezes. I
suspect I've run out of memory. I'm running with 32 megs of ram and a swap file

however. (No hard drive activity.)

Is lack of memory the likely culprit, or is this something more serious?

[newbie] Netscape 4.61 load problem

1999-09-04 Thread harry ellis

I downloaded the new Netscape 4.61 through the Updates site (and a very easy
process it is!) but now the Netscape program seems to load only when I'm online.
When I'm not online, sometimes it shows up when I click the icon, but other
times the hard drive light flickers for awhile, but the program doesn't show
up. When I go online it usually shows up after a bit.

Is this an accepted feature of Netscape on Linux, a bug, or something wrong
with my config? I like to work offline because we have only one phone and I'm
married. Need I say more?

Has anyone else experienced this?

[newbie] Netscape address book

1999-09-04 Thread harry ellis

I sent myself a copy of my email addresses in a letter from my Win98 computer to
my Linux computer. I'm pretty sure that when I was root I could click on these
addresses while in Netscape and easily transfer them to the Netscape address
book. Anyway, my address book is fine in Linux root.

But now, in my non-root access, I
can't find any way to get them to jump to the address book from a similar
letter. I don't know if I'm missing something or the new Netscape 4.61 I
downloaded has a problem with this.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

[newbie] StarOffice 4.0

1999-08-18 Thread Harry Ellis

I can get a free copy of StarOffice 4.0 on a cd from our library. The book
it comes with suggests it needs linux library version libc 5.4.22 or higher
to 6.x, but EARLIER VERSIONS MUST BE AVAILABLE to StarOffice.
I have installed Venus 6.0. So is the library version I have "backwards
compatible" with StarOffice 4.0, or do I have to download libc 5.4.22 and
make it available to the office suite?

Or should I get a friend to download the new version, which is
unfortunately even larger (I'm running out of space), but presumably
compatible?

Thanks in advance

[newbie] Modem connects; no Internet

1999-08-15 Thread Harry Ellis

My US Robotics 33.6 modem dials my ISP, they "talk", the Kppp reads
connected, but nothing works.

I've installed Venus 6.0 as the only os on a stand alone pentium, trying
both the Linuxconfig and the Kppp to connect. I'm hoping someone will
recognize this as a problem they've previously solved.

I can see packets going out when I ping with a remote DNS, or try an
Internet address in Netscape. Same with mail. But when I check "details"
while connected, the information is always the same: 19 packets in
(always), no more packets in, and a growing number of packets out while my
computer keeps sending.

I've talked to my ISP (they were not excited about Linux) and apparently
PAP, Dynamic, DNS,Domain Name, News, Mail are all correct. On the website
of US Robotics I found the dip switches for my modem are apparently correct
for Linux (at least for Slackware). My ISP, Sympatico.ca, says that Linux
can be hooked up to their service, but they don't say it very
enthusiastically.

I'm hoping there is a box I can checkmark, or a number I can change, and
magically this problem will go away. I've reinstalled a few times to clear
out any mistakes I've made, and I even installed an older Redhat (5.2) and
hooked up using Linuxconfig with the same one way results.

Two weeks of reading and searching has not helped me. The Mandrake creators
have put together an attractive, easy to install package, and I especially
like the KDE gui. But if I can't get online I can't really use it. And that
would be a big disappointment for me. Has anyone seen anything quite like
this? I've noticed similar problems in the letters but not quite this one.

Here's hoping Harry
