now that was all nice till you got to the PS and then fronted your opinion
exactly the same way you told others not to (or not to listen to).. or did i

linux: (the community as a public vocal group) is (from what i have observed as
a longtime lurker on sites/forums/lists and as a user for about 3 years from
redhat 6 to mdk 7.2 and uptil now 8.2..and only just getting a handle on it)
full of people who want you ignore the vocal minority who scream and jump up n
down, but then add their voice to a not the same but not too different either
argument. its an OS people! a tool, a better way of doing things. ITS NOT A

[newbie] KDE/Gnome broken in 8.2 for me

2002-03-31 Thread mike cola

tryed 2wice now to install 8.2 on my box that was previously running 8.1 no problems
at all (and 8.0) before that, and it all goes smoothly enough until i get to
restarting and logging in.. kde gives me a error saying the dcop server is not
running, and gnome just returns to the login instead of actually logging me in. kde
apps also are able to be run but dont open properly, giving errors of could not open
network socket and then again says check to see that dcop server is running again.

so i am stuck using blackbox (which isnt tooo bad i do admit but the lack of desktop
icons is kinda annoying , tho im sure they can be created somnehow that i havent
discovered yet) when i would much rather be using KDE..

any help[ gladly appreciated...

Hopefully my last one too :)

I have Mandrake 8.0. I bought it being a newbie not knowing how to use
ISO files didn't feel like d/ling it. I've since d/led 8.1 but want
to practice on 8.0 for a bit first

So my question is I can use Licq as Root. I have attempted to change
the permissions on Licq (which file is the *.exe, so to speak!?)...and
well it just won't stick...

That is i go to start Licq as a normal user, it won't do it again...by
default on install..fresh install of 8.0 Man, Licq will only work for
Root!?

mmm not much of a help with this problem but maybe try to use gaim. i use that with
8.1 and i find it far superior as now i can talk to friends on icq/msn/aim with no
dramas at all.

i was getting all kinds of lil glitches with licq on 8.1 but i did have it running on
8.0. unfortunately i cant actually remember what i did to make that happen sorry.

the list said
Switching to ReiserFS requires making a backup of all your data, reformatting
the partition and restoring your data. I suggest that you do a fresh install
of Mandrake (Freq 3 was just released so now is a good time), using the
installer to format your partition as ReiserFS. You can even modify your
partitioning structure if you so desire.

i bought my mdk 8 cds at a computer fair... any idea of how to tell exactly which
version of 8 they are? like the freq# or is it likely they are just the basic release
of 8? i have 8 installed at the mo and am about to reinstall over the weekend and
change all the partition sizes.. but id like to get the latest updated stable
version.. without having d/l it as i cant do that due to still waiting for the adsl
geezer to come do my install.

[newbie] adsl/ethernet adapter... (more problems with the NIC now)

2001-07-21 Thread mike cola

actually i spoke prematurely... the card fails to load on startup...
so i took out the details i entered in linuxconf and thought i'd give it a go using
mandrake control centre and it fails on the third step of the configure, when yiou
choose which driver to load.

i'm at a total loss as to where to go from here. i don't really want tohave to get
another NIC as i have 3 (all realtek8019's so can't really swap em around)

RE: [newbie] Getting the network to work

2001-05-31 Thread mike cola

i don't know if anyone else mailed you re this (or if this will go via the list but
the NIC (if it is an ISA card at least)you have to use a DOS prog to set the IRQ
/memory settings.. i'm not sure i understand it but the process is described in better
detail here; http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html
i have a card ISA based on the same chipset and it took a bit of playing around and i
can't remember what i did but it works now. mail me off list if you need the dos
program and can't find it..

SUBJECT
I've just installed Mandrake 8.0 and it was very easy - compared with the
last time I tried Linux, about four years ago, when getting X running took
a whole weekend.

But I've run into a problem with my network; I want to run SAMBA on the
linux box (AMD K6-3, 450MHz, 256M) and connect a variety of other machines
to it, and have tried the excellent O'Reilly trouble-shooter at
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/ch09_02.html, which has
led me to believe that:

The problem seems to be getting Linux to recognise the NIC (a realtek
8139).I think the right kernel module is 8139too, and if I do lsmod it
appears but is unused.

but ls /dev/eth0 returns no such file or directory, and eth0 doesn't appear
in lsmod either.

I have put a line in /etc/modules.conf alias eth0 8139too, and that doesn't
seem to do the trick.

HardDrake correctly identifies the card (presumably via a PnP bios call);
but Linux doesn't talk to it.

Has anyone else had similar problems, and if so what did you do to solve
it?

(the network worked fine under Win98 btw so it shouldn't be a hw fault).

RE[newbie] java. why doesn't it go? (still no joy)

2001-05-19 Thread mike cola

thanks to everyone who has helped me with this. i've now managed to extract the tar
file but the instructions say to add the location of the sdk to the PATH settings.
Where do i find path to modify it?

i'm slowly but surely getting the hang of this. Looking forward to getting this up and
running now.

mike

I have not followed this discussion, but if you have a tar.gz file and you
unzip it first, then you don't need the 'tar xvzf' command, but just the
'tar xvf' command (since it is just a .tar file)
To unpack a tar.gz in one command you could use 'tar xvzf'
See 'man tar' for more information.

Concerning this java sdk .bin-file:
This is a shell script, which automatically extracts the files for you, so
try chmod to 755 and then execute it.

Regards,

Leander

[newbie] java. why doesn't it go?

2001-05-16 Thread mike cola

i'm currently attempting to study java at college but whn i try to compile i get the
message error: Cannot find type 'javax/swing/JOptionPane'. is this due to LM 7.2
using an old JDK ? what version of the JDK is standard in 7.2? i've tried to upgrade
to ibm's jdk 1.3 but i think the download was corrupted as i get the error (in
Gnomerpm) that the rpm doesn't appear to ba an rpm.. i downloaded the JRE and the SDK,
is there a specific order that they should be installed in (i'm going to try to d/l
them again)? i also d/loaded Forte, the ibm IDE and while it installs fine i can't
seem to find it in the menus and it has a folder in the /usr/local/ directory but i
don't know how to run it from there. All answers to these problems gladly appreciated.
espescially since i want to use my pc to write up a project due in a couple of weeks
without having to resort to using my crap old windoze box.
thanks
mike

Re: [newbie] java. why doesn't it go?

2001-05-16 Thread mike cola

yeah, i have downloaded these but can you tell me what is the difference between a FCS
file and an rc1. what do these acronyms mean? i d/l both types in the jdk, but how do
i uncompress a bz file. i know it has something to do with bzip but i'm unsure of how
to install from these as i don't know what they are.
thanks

Okay, first of all, Mandrake comes installed with
kaffe which is basically a clone of Java 1.1 (I
think). It's old and tends to be rather inconvenient
these days.

You want to remove that before you install the new
java. Well, maybe you can have both, but I always
remove kaffe.

rpm -e kaffe

You may have to do:

rpm -e --nodeps kaffe

Now I would install the newer java. Most people agree
that the Blackdown java is one of the best for Linux.
On the Konqueror site they actually recommend
Blackdown over the others and state their are
sometimes problems with IBM's and Sun's latest 1.3. I
use Blackdown and so far it has been very successful
for me.

When you install the SDK, it should install the JRE
for you. Therefore, you should not need the jre.

You can get the blackdown java for linux here:

RE[newbie] java. why doesn't it go? (still no joy)

2001-05-16 Thread mike cola

i used the bzip command below and that gives me a straight .tar file but when i try to
tar -zxvf that it says gzip: stdin: not in gzip format. any ideas what i might be
doing wrong. i also have a j2sdk-1_3_0_02-linux.bin file which i got from somewhere
elese, any ideas on how i use a bin file? i'm just starting to learn how to use the
file system and sometimes i still get totally lost.

.. for instance , when i go to the list of packages are there a HUUUGE amount of
packages installed but they don't appear on the menus or run when i type in the
program name at the command line? how do i just start a prog from a menu browser (like
to say run an .exe in windose from file manager when there is no icon/menu entry)?

Actually, I wondered about that too. rc1 will mean
Release Candidate 1 which means it is not the final
release. It is past beta testing, but not considered
final.

I don't know what FCS is. It had the more current
date and it is what I am using.

To uncompress a .bz file do the following:

bzip2 -d somefile.bz
