Re: [newbie] Another Sound problem

2001-11-03 Thread Joseph Braddock

I had intermittent sound problems under KDE until I told it to use OSS
instead of ALSA. The easiest way to check/change is to go to the
Configuration menu, then KDE, then Sound and finally, Sound Server. On the
General tab, make sure the Start aRTS Soundserver on KDE startup is checked
(if it's not, that's probably your problem). On the Sound IO tab, change the
method to Open Sound System (mine was autodetect). When you hit reply, it
will warn you something about possibly locking up apps using sound. If you
have any apps open close them and then tell it to restart the sound server.
You can go back to the General tab and press the Test Sound button to see if
it made a difference.

That happened to me once with xmms. I found out there is a setting
somewhere that sends the output to a file. I think it's called
diskwriter plugin or something similar. When I deselected that option,
I could hear the music again. Look carefully at all your xmms menus (or
maybe someone else knows what I am referring to and can tell you

Now if I log in as root, it works, but as different user...no. So I guess
I'll have to do it all again as the user.
Actually, you don't have to do it again as the user. What has to happen is
that user *must* be a member of the sound group (it's either sound or
audio, I think). If they aren't, they will not be allowed to play sounds.

To add someone to the sound group, you can go through to the program you
used to add the user, and add as an optional group, or you can edit
/etc/group directly.

3. Try reinstalling the sndconfig RPM, found on your Mandrake CD, by
