[newbie] Blackbox-Konqueror wierdness

2003-03-07 Thread Roger Sherman
Having a strange problem with Konqueror in blackbox...when I first boot
the PC up, or restart X, if I log into blackbox, Konqueror won't start
from the blackbox menu, unless I start it from a terminal first. After
that, it works fine...but in KDE, it works from the menu, icons,
everything. Thoughts?

I would check the menu file to ascertain that the correct path is written
there. Compare it to the path in your KDE icon or menu.

Sorry - I should have been more clear. After I call Konqueror once from a

Sorry - I should have been more clear. After I call Konqueror once from a
terminal, it will then work every other time when I call it from the menu.

It's rather strange that it would/should do this, but it would appear as
though some things need to be modified in order to have Konq eithe be
found a bit faster, or have Konq find it's dependencies a bit faster.
One thing that I ALWAYS do on EVERY system I get my grubbies on is to
make sure the following lines are in the /etc/profile:

KDEDIR='/usr'
export KDEDIR

..and as well, I modify my /etc/ld.so.conf file so that all possible
libs are in there and then re-run ldconfig to rebuild the cache
(example):

/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt2/lib
/usr/lib/sane
/usr/lib/qt-1.45/lib
/usr/lib/wine
/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.0.5/lib
/usr/local/java/lib
/usr/lib/qt3-gcc2.96/lib
/usr/local/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.0/post
/usr/lib/OpenOffice.org1.0/program
/usr/i386-glibc21-linux/lib/
/opt/quasar/firebird/lib
/opt/quasar/sybase/lib

And even moreso - since you're running KDE applications from withing
Blackbox, you might want to run kdeinit in the blackbox startup - this
initialises the KDE DCOP server and services; hence when you've got it
up and running already in the background as Blackbox is running, any KDE
application you fire up is going to fire up quickly and more smoothly.

Also check your menu files for Blackbox to make sure that the exec
entries are correct and not wrapping the executable with another
program...that's helpful.

Meanwhile, it's now Saturday, and y'all still in Friday, so I'll go
watch cartoons.

[newbie] blackbox config ques

2002-10-16 Thread Angus Auld

Greetings, are there any blackbox users in the house? I've been experimenting with
blackbox on my Mdk 9.0 a bit (0.62.1-3mdk), and I think it's pretty interesting. I
also have bbconfg-1.8-2mdk installed too.

I will have to do some reading up on bbconf to learn the in's and out's of it.(how to
add entries to my menu primarily)

However, what I would like to ask is how do I config my mouse settings, like
acceleration and threshold? Do I have to edit a file or what? Nothing in bbconf for
mouse settings :(
Is there a plugin available to do mouse settings?

TIA for any feedback.

I've recently gotten to really enjoy using blackbox as a KDE/Gnome substitute

That doesn't work unless it's set up in the config file. =)

I was informed by another gentleman that the .blackboxrc file needs to
have the proper line entered to turn this feature on. I'm perplexed it's

 I have another box PII 300 128 megs ram 16 gigs but I don't
want to change it till I see if I like it.
You can just start an xinit session (just starting X without any window
manager) by typing xinit on a command line. If you already have a running
X, add the "-- :1" (without quotes) paramter to the command line.
When you have your xinit running, you can run any wm you want from within
the xterm displayed in it. So, if you have blackbox installed, you just
type blackbox in the xterm.

and what is the easiest way to install I went to the site
 and there's 2 kindsSource.tar.gz download
Source.tar.bz2 download

 which do I use?
Those are exactly the same. Only the method to decompress the sources will
change :
with the .tar.gz file, you uncompress it with :
tar zxf Source.tar.gz
or gunzip -c Source.tar.gz |tar xf -

With the .tar.bz2 file :
tar yxf Source.tar.bz2 (I'm not sure of this one)
or bzcat Source.tar.bz2 |tar xf - (this one will sure work)

Whatever file you choose, you will end with a directory with the sources
in it. Usually, you just have to cd to that directory, then run :
./configure
make
su -c "make install"

But it is safe to read the README or the INSTALL file provided with the
sources before doing that.

But if you have a mdk distro, the easiest way would be to install the rpm
package. (Isn't it provided with the mdk CD? I'm not sure, since I don't
use mandrake anymore).

I also noticed that there are not any docs
that I can see for install instructions.
I hope my above instructions will help you. But if it isn't the case, go
to to the blackbox site for more info (http://blackbox.alug.org/)

  I am a newbie but

Re: [newbie] Blackbox Window manager

Hya.

I use BB for the moment. It's easy to autostart apps, regardless which
windowmanager you use. Just edit the file called .xinitrc in your homedir to
start some processes in the background.

Let's say I'd like to start an xterm, an xosview and a netscape together with
blackbox, then my .xinitrc file would look like this:

  xterm
  xosview
netscape-communicator #or whatever the command is
  blackbox

As you can see, all commands except blackbox start in the background. At least
one program must run in "foreground", otherwise the script will terminate.

Read the apropriate man-pages (man startx) for more info.

I just changed my Xclients file to read:

   #!/bin/bash
   kpanel
   kfm -d
   /usr/local/bin/blackbox

Of course you don't have to add the lines kpanel and kfm -d , I added
these so that the desktop icon for kde and the kpanel would appear. These
are my own tastes. The blackbox binary was located in my /usr/local/bin
file. Make sure that you place the bsetroot bin somewhere where the OS can
access it ie. /bin . Then just save this to your Xclients file, remember to
back up the original Xclients file in case something goes wrong. Then just
run startx from the command line prompt and you will be on you way.
left/right clicking the desktop will pull up the blackbox menu, which
probably needs to be edited to work properly with your system (..very easy
to do), or the iconify menu.
Have fun, and spread the word. Blackbox is the fastest and easiest to
   modify GUI out there.

  Thanks Sean,

It works and I am evaluating it. I appreciate the kpanel and kfm
additions. It seems faster, but not markedly so. I find it cumbersome
to shut down - is there a way of having it start (run level 5) and
shutdown by default if I decide to go with it.

If you want to shutdown from blackbox, right click the desktop and click on exit
in the menu. Don't confuse the blackbox pulldown menu with the kpanel pulldown
menu. If you just want to shutdown your computer, you can exit blackbox and then

shutdown, or wite a little script and give it executable permissions:
 #!/bin/bash
 shutdown now

Or just type in shutdown now from any command line.
I don't know how fast your computer is, but mine is 133Mhz, so I am able to
notice how much of a memory hog KDE is compared to Blackbox. There
may be no noticable difference on faster computers. But you can use xmemon (..I
 think)
and visually compare the two. But, again, this may not matter to folks who are
running 300 + Mhz computers. I also like the way Blackbox is so small and
easily configurable. But thats me. Enjoy.

Here is the dumb question. I read the install and run notes but nothing
tells me how to actually start it ie get it on my desktop. Has the
install not worked or am I missing something obvious?

 Please be kind.

I just changed my Xclients file to read:

 #!/bin/bash
 kpanel

Regards.
