Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
the primary name (as in item 9 below) is the complete name of your computer, as assigned to you by your ISP... The thing is, I don't think I was assigned that. Looking at my sheet from US West with all my account info, I don't see any primary computer name. There is a user name and password (which is a bunch of letters and numbers), DNS, POP etc. When I connect with my Mac OS Powerbook, I don't have to put a primary name anywhere. (Although there is DHCP Client ID, which is my user name.) So I'm not sure what to put.
Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
Also, I have set up my Powerbook to run Debian Linux and connected through DSL no problem, configured automatically. The host name I used for that was the default bame 'debian'. But I now think maybe somethings up with my ethernet hub, so I'll try plugging DSL modem straight to computer.
Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
kinda sounds like your DHCP Client ID might be what US West uses...try username.domain (something like joholland.uswest.com perhaps)...that might work...much hassle is caused by the various ISP's using different terms to mean the same thing...let me know if that works and i'll be able to pass it on to the next person needing the info... frank - On Mon, 17 Jul 2000, Joshua Holland wrote: the primary name (as in item 9 below) is the complete name of your computer, as assigned to you by your ISP... Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
how is the hub fed??...have you a firewall/router between it and the DSL modem??...if not, then are you shutting down the modem and allowing it to lose the MAC number of the powerbook, before bringing it up with the mdk system??... Re: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
if your dsl modem is feeding into an ethernet card (some feed usb instead) the set-up ought be very similar... the primary name (as in item 9 below) is the complete name of your computer, as assigned to you by your ISP...the portion before the first dot (reading from the left) is unique to your computer, and is often a bunch of letters and numbers...the portion after the first dot is the domain name of your ISP... your user name is the name you type in to identify yourself to your ISP...often something like jtsmithwinkle, or a made-up handle like gorethunker, THEpid, or leftnostril... your computer host name is that part of your "primary name + domain" that comes before the first dot... hope that's clear...if not, let me know and i'll garble forth some more... frank On Sun, 16 Jul 2000, Joshua Holland wrote: would this be the same for DSL connection? [newbie] Ethernet problems.
Dear All, Hello again. Can anyone help me find the easiest way to get on the internet with my newly installed FriendlyNet Asante 10/100 Fast PCI 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter? The Cox cable technician came yesterday, installed it for my Windows 95 but could not get it to work in my Windows 95. He says the driver would not install because I had some corrupt files in Windows 95. He blamed Linux for it. Personally, I do not think he really knew why it was not working. I asked him to help me with the Linux installation but he knew nothing about Linux. He got started with it and he did something with Kudzu then gave up. I do not know where he left off. I have gone through all of the archives and info on the net that I could find about using a cable modem with Linux. I am a true newbie and I just do not know the first thing about doing this. All I know is that my the domain name is cox-internet.com. The IP Address is automatically assigned by the server each time you log on. The Outgoing Mail Server is smtp.cox-internet.com. The Incoming Mail Server is pop.cox-internet.com. The FTP Server is ftp.tcainternet.com. I have Linux-Mandrake 7.0 complete with the DrakX graphical installer. Do you use Kppp for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Marcia

Can you see your zip drive at all or just can't access it? If you don't see it at all, there is a thread just a couple of days ago that worked for me. Basically you have to manually enter the drive in the list and then tell the system to find it. It's a SCSI device on the parallel port. Not a big deal, modify two files and you're done. Worked good for me. Also, if you've got one of the later Mandrake CD's you can open the install, go to the section where it installs things like drives and simply answer yes to the SCSI question. It'll automatically set up your zip drive for ya'. If this is too much I can send you the details. My data is at work so can get it tomorrow if needed. You can do it, check the archives for the Newbies at the Mandrake site, it shouldn't be older than about a week. See ya' B. B. Stanfield KC5PIY A J Benamu wrote: I got my internet running... which service are you using? I've got @home and all I had to do was assign eth0 my IP address, subnet mask, both DNS servers and the gateway IP address. @home gave me all that information on the receipt that the installation guy left for me. RE: [newbie] Ethernet problems.
WAIT! I have @home and I just got this configured in linux last night. On the receipt that they installation person left are your DNS addresses, IP address, subnet mask and gateway address. If you don't have that piece of paper or can't make sense of it, call @ home and ask them for that info. Open the network utility in DrakConf. Enter your computer name with the name @home gave you like this: c652933-a.sttln1.wa.home.com where the above reflects the information they gave you. Choose manual in the configuration for eth0 and enter the IP address and subnet mask there. Go to the DNS section and enter your primary and secondary DNS addresses. Go to the gateway section and enter your gateway address. Quit until it wants to apply the changes. Let it do that. You should be able to access the internet immediately. alas...some are destined for greatness and some are relegated to using windows all their lives. Don't give up so easily. Windows might be easier, but Linux, once it's configured and running it's lightyears more stable and fun once you get to know it. It's also much safer than Windows. And as an added bonus for signing up with Penguins Army you're already eligable for the "Linux is immune to Windows virii of any kind" bvonus prize. Any way you slice it Linux has it all if you're willing to follow the learning curve going straight up until it levels off some. -- Mark I love my Linux Box... [newbie] Ethernet problems with 3COM card
I am having a problem with my 3COM EtherLink III ISA 3C509b-TPO card. From what I have been reading, I am supposed to see some kind of 'eth0' text in the boot up text (dmesg). However, I am not seeing anything about eth0 at all. When I try to run dhcpcd I get the following message in the dhcpcd.log file... Oct 6 22:26:02 davidem dhcpcd[1468]: dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable I then tried tcpdump -evvn -i eth0 and recieved the following text... tcpdump: WARNING: SIOCGIFADDR: eth0: Cannot assign requested address tcpdump: listening on eth0 tcpdump: pcap_loop: read: Network is down I am guessing that all that means that my ethernet card is not getting seen by Linux. Has anyone else seen this problem? Do I just need to set an irq? If so, is there a way to see what irq's are currently being used and pick one that is safe? How do I set the irq for the ethernet card in Linux? I haven't found any HOWTO's for this problem. Pointing me to one that would help me get the ethernet card up and running would also be helpful. Thanks for all your patients... (I hope I have the HTML stuff turned off now, sorry about that guys! :) Dave --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
