Try passing single to kernel when you are booting. Like, if you are
using lilo, type linux single instead of linux at the prompt.

HI - I don't know what a linmodem is, but considering the
low cost of an external modem, buy one and use it instead !

Best book about linux I've ever seen is : Running Linux
from O'Reilly. It is very beginner-friendly and with a touch
of humour too. Enjoy !

I did make some models work fine under linux, but all have different
styles to be configured. Which modem are you trying to make work ?
What rpm did you use ?

Btw, many of the modems can not work with rpms, as they need to be
compiled against your machine.

in its simplist terms, a winmodem is a modem where half the hardware has
been replaced by software..

so certain stuff that would normally be done by the modem itself is done by
your PC's CPU via the driver software..

The problem is that not many winmodem manufactures make linux drivers or
even supply the specs so that one may be written.

makes it hard to get them working properly.

a linmodem is generally one that either had linux drivers supplied for it,
or someone has worked out how to write one for it themselves and have
released it..

I am of the belief that nothing does as well as a good old serial external
modem, it won't need a driver at all, and should have you up and away almost
instantly, it also puts alot less load on your PC, since your CPU isnt'
doing half the work of the modem.

be careful of USB external modems, alot of them are also winmodems.

Hi Roy,
Same basic configuration as me. Before we try anything more complicated, you
should go into the kppp , setup tab. In there, under 'device' you should try
the /dev/tty0 or /dev/tty1 .
Also, I have flow control set to xon/xoff. Under the 'modem' tab, there is a

   Hi Roy,
Same basic configuration as me. Before we try anything more complicated,
you should go into the kppp , setup tab. In there, under 'device' you
 should try the /dev/tty0 or /dev/tty1 .
Also, I have flow control set to xon/xoff. Under the 'modem' tab, there
is a 'query' button. You could give that a try and see if your modem is
 responding at all.
   I'm sure you're very close.

which modem you are using, which 'rpm' did you use, I might be able to

Re: [newbie] Linmodems

2001-12-16 Thread Joseph Braddock

Try this. Open a shell or terminal window. SU and then type/run modemconf.
This will display a window with an option to autodetect. Select it and if it
finds your modem, it will configure the /dev/modem appropriately. For
instance, under Windows98, my winmodem is on IRQ 3, under Linux, it is IRQ
15. Anyway, assuming it finds it, it means that a) you have the correct
driver installed and b) it should work for you after you accept the settings.
(if you get a command not found error, then you didn't SU before running it!)

Roy,

Which PDA package are you using? I found problems configuring Kpilot, but
Jpilot works just fine for me. Confusingly, Jpilot is under Applications |
Communications on the KDE menus, while Kpilot is under Office | PDA. Can't
quite see the logic of this.

Anyway, if you try Jpilot, just go to File | Preferences | Settings, type in
the name of the com port your are attached to and bingo (famous last words I
know).

Hope that helps
/Brian

[newbie] LinModems!

2001-01-04 Thread smithjw

Hi all,

I just stumbled upon a neat thing. People have started writing
Linux drivers for WinModems. And the one that came with my
system has a driver. Yay! I was really bummed when I found out
that I had a WinModem. And hopefully this will be an immediate
help. I do plan on getting a real modem here in the not too distant
future, but it's not a priority just yet. For anybody else who is
enterested I found out about these at the following sites:

http://linmodems.org/
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

Cheers!

[newbie] Linmodems

2000-09-05 Thread Deno

Linmodems
(http://forum.mandrakesoft.com/article.php3?sid=2905114341)

Due to wide avaliability of cheep junk-modems, "How can I get my winmodem working
under Linux" question has made it very high on list of Frequently Asked Questions.

For a long time, standard answer was "no, forget it", but this has changed lately to
"maybe", "some" and "to some extend", because some vendors provided binary-only
modules, and there has even been some progress on free-software front.

Although this question has already been discussed several times on this forum, I
decided to re-launch the story, because of two recent changes on linmodems.org and WG
pages:

First, there is a new table on gromitkc pages, with list of existing linmodem drivers
and links to tarballs. Thus, search for drivers has just been made easier.
Second change is that Mikhail Moreyra has written a driver for the CL-MD5620DT
(Ambient Tech) chipset, and according to linmodems.org it does PPP! I have no idea how
good this driver is, but if you have this winmodem, make sure to try out the driver.

So, times are changing in Linmodems land, but don't expect too much. Binary-only
drivers are bound to give you problems on next kernel upgrade, and GPL-ed ones are
still in vary early stage (though the above mentioned one could be further than I
thought), so you should still avoid these monsters if you can, and we will not be able
to give you any sort of support if/when something goes wrong.
