You may be looking for Zinf ( www.zinf.org ). It is a replacement for
XMMS which is also capable of capturing streams to MP3 format and
storing it on your hard drive, without any additional software required
( ie; StreamRipper ). Give that a shot.

Is there any way to get streamripper to not split the screen into separate songs and
just make one big long mp3? The stream I'm listening to doesn't seem to change the
track name at the right spot and i get mp3's with the 2nd half of one song and the
first half of the next. OR: is there a way to have it put a number before the
filename in succession for each it saves (so i get 01-filename1mp3, 02-filename3.mpg,
etc) so you could decode to .wav and cat it all together?

I found it weird, but then found I never use it - it's a kind of
hangover from cassette players. You can just hit pause and slide to

totem is OK mostly for that. I've had difficulty playing VCDs, will have
to reinvestigate that one. But if you look at the cooker archives
there's lots of people who had difficulty with totem, and totem is
slated to be 'the' media player. It would be kinda nice to have just one
that worked well all the time.

How is zinf as a replacement for xmms? It's gtk2. I've got zinf
installed now, and am toying with the idea of replacing all links to mp3
files get streamtuner and so forth to open zinf, and then maybe the
timing problem with streamripper that I described. zinf looks OK but it
really needs to catch on, especially in the plugin department if it's
going to replace xmms, which has a ton of stuff available. Like for
instance xmms-diskwriter, I use that a lot in preparation for CD
burning. It's pretty much the fastest and the only way I've discovered
especially to convert VBR mp3's to wav format.

I just started up zinf and it's finding music files for me ATM but even
though I asked only to search $HOME, it's looking over the entire drive
:(.

well, check in requires/provides then :). I built 2.2.5 from source, and
I remember seeing it look for gtk-2.0 libraries and includes. But maybe
that's not the same thing as gtk2.

zinf is pretty clunky, now that I've tried it a little bit. The finding
music stuff needs a bit of work, it's finding a lot of streams called
'-q' and other things I have to go in and delete.

I'm trying to record the streams, but it either is not working or is
storing the recorded files into an unknown folder.
 The command looks like this

 gnome-terminal -hold -e streamripper %

 Thanks for any tip.
Are you using streamtuner to pass the info to streamripper?

[newbie] WinAmp 5 clone

2004-03-13 Thread Patrick Dempster
Hi Folks,

Can anyone point me in the direction of a linux clone on winamp5, I've been
using xmms for years to play my mp3's and such. But the other day while
working on a windows machine I discovered that winamp provides lists of radio
tv stations that stream(?) their stuff and I was wondered if such tool
existed on linux?

Thanks in Advance,
Paddy

I just installed it, but every URL I've tried so far gives me error -54

...this is from within Streamtuner, ie. when you click the 'record' button?

Have you tried this? I wonder if this is a cooker thing, as I gave the
thing a go twice last week, both on shoutcast stations. I found later on
that one of the sites I used was monaural (was a classic rock station)
but the other one was Virgin Radio UK. Virgin was probably not a good
test site to use in any case with streamripper because it's a commercial
radio station with a lot of talking going on - they even talk over the
first few seconds of the songs just like many domestic radio stations in
the US do (gives more time for commercials). I ran streamripper on it
for 24 hours and got a CD's worth of mp3 tunes.

So maybe it's not a good empirical test, but one thing I noticed is that
the timings were all off - many songs had snippets of other songs at the
end of them, and since streamripper puts each song into its own
filename, it would be a nightmare trying to repair the mp3s with
audacity and try and match up the snippets with the beginnings of the
 songs they belong to.

I'll have to try this again, but it just seems there's a buffering issue
or something that opens the new file too quickly.

  JoeHill

Also there is realrekord (plf I believe) has hooks to record realaudio
content (that didn't work too well) but has a (very small) database of
stations to try. streamtuner/streamripper is a good choice but
shoutcast/icecast/live365 are mostly not radio stations that would be
 found in Windows media player.

I could of course use some more stations to try :). But my approach so
far has been to collect little header files with the stations url and
other options, then pass that to an mplayer command line. I can make a
simple pushbutton icon on the desktop, name it with the call letters of
the station go from there. If I get too many radio stations I'll of
course have to come up with groups like classical rock country and
so forth :). Not as elegant I suppose as going through a list of
stations in WMP, but it's a lot better than going through increasing
levels of hoops from the radio station's page in Mozilla just to get to
 the player link.
