Garyso do you really need Star Office? I ask because whatever anomaly is causing this is getting you down and maybe a compromise is the best way out. Wasn't recofiguring X enough to fix things. Did you look for damage to the /etc/X11/XF86Config file? Possibly backing this file up before installing and restoring it when problems occur? I knew that the solutions I suggest are not remedies, but patches and work-a-rounds. sorry I can't be a better help. Alan P.S. Maybe some of you should put me out to pasture: I learned wordprocessing with WordStar 2.2 on an Osborne tan case under CP/M. I hex patched printer driver strings when I didn't know if that was supposed to be a zero or letter O. You knew I had to be some kind of crazy to install Linux so many times, didn't you? Seems crazy to me. Me too... I had Quattro/Quattro Pro in DOS (Happily), Windoze (forced), and Linux (happily). WP in Dos/Win/Linux. WP Office is just.. Better.. I only wish it was witten in native Linux MarkP

I've registered my copy of Word Perfect, and with my video properly configured again tried to install Star Office when Word Perfect was already in place, and it still corrupts Xwindows to the extent that I have to reload Linux to fix it. Summarizing many installs of Linux and WP/SO: 1) generic video or fully configured makes no difference, 2) whether Word Perfect has had its registration number entered or not makes no difference, 3) hdparm either default or c3d1, and desktop configuration makes no difference, 4) whether other RPMs have been installed or not makes no difference, and 5) the order of WP and SO makes no difference. The last couple of times I've gotten "install failed" at about 80% complete, which I had not gotten earlier, and I don't know what is responsible for that change. In all cases, everything seems fine until a reboot. I can't think of anything that might be responsible for this failure to get both WP and SO installed. GaryI certainly can't say what it is that caused your problems, but I have both SO and WP running on my mdk 7.0 system and have experienced no problems. Mine were installed from disc 5 of the MandrakeSoft Powerpack 7.0. Same here... Gary, I would hate to tell you this but I have installed and still use WP and SO together on the same machine, same Linux distro without a problem.
