[newbie] Argh-Software manager is killing me!
Okay, like a lot of people, I liked install and remove integrated together but I can live with them being split up...BUT Many, many times I go to install a package and it says: Everything already installed (is it supposed to be like that?) As su, I issued a rpm --rebuilddb, but it didn't help. Is there any way to get the Software Manager to realise whats correctly installed and not? I've always liked that character from Peanuts. - Source: Dilbert It appears to me that the update prog compares what you have installed on your computer and only downloads the files pertinent to your set up. Otherwise you would get a whole bunch of stuff you don't need. I used gftp and made one of the 9.0 security mirrors a bookmark and then did a select all and downloaded the whole danged thing. Now when there is a new security alert I go to gftp and select my bookmark and then once it is loaded I do toolscompare windows and then the select and it only downloads what is different. The neat thing is it works kinda like rsync cause if a package has changed but the name didn't ( I know not likely) or the package version changes I can d/l the new file and then delete the old or if it asks overwrite the old. I keep the file as Update9.0 on my second hard drive and any thing that bungs up the hda doesn't affect the updates. So if I have do a reinstall I don't have to download the whole thing again. (take a breath now, should have made a paragraph). Another little quirk of mine that works for me. No it doesn't. Get the message that it can't find the mirror list, that I have to wait and try later because network could be down or server unreachable or whatsoever... Tried this for two weeks (can surf and email without probs) and finally inserted a mirror manually in MSM, typing rather long command in console. Now it works, but I never got the MDK mirror list that's on the MDK website for updates automatically. [newbie] Mandrake Software Manager problem
Experimenting is a good way to learn, isn't it? Unfortunately, I messed around with the entry for CD1 in Mandrake Software Manager (MSM), deleted it and than added it again. Now when I try to add software from CD1, the system keeps asking me for CD1, even when the CD is in the CD player. Ejects CD1 and asks for it at the same time. Doesn't seem to recognize CD1 any more. Can I set this MSM back to the original values (kind of reset to default, uninstall and then reinstall MSM via terminal,...) without having to reinstall MDK 9.0 all over again? Re: [newbie] Qn: Software Manager: replacing the Mandrake CD sources
thanks to Dimitris Loannou and Brandon Vanderg, and an un-named person who emailed me directly, i managed to do what i set out to do. for the benefit of anyone other newbie w/o a cdrom drive, the key bit of info is to point the mirror to the directory containing the Mandrake RPMS, eg ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/8.2/i586/Mandrake/R PMS/ and set the relative path to hdlist correctly, in this case ../base/hdlist (i think the .cz part of hdlist.cz can be omitted) once again, thank you everyone. - Original Message - From: Stormjumper [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 3:35 PM Subject: [newbie] Qn: Software Manager: replacing the Mandrake CD sources hello, i installed Mandrake 8.2 Download Edition on an old system using the 3 downloaded cdroms, then subsequently remove the cd-rom drive. is there any way i can configure the Software Manager to point to sources on the web for packages in the cds? right now, i've added a few (valid?) sources, but they can only give me security upgrades and bug fixes. if i try to install any packages that exist(ed) on the install cd(s), i'm prompted for the mandrake cds. thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Quick Software Manager Questions (3)
Hello, I just read Derek J.'s message about how to make Software Manager update its database so I can start browsing the list of packages on my cds or the web. I assume that this is done before looking at the cds so that any newer versions be found. So is the Software Manager smart enough to know that if I am looking at foobar 1.2.03-3 on cd#4 and foobar 1.4..07-5 is available through the update to tell me this or somehow stop me from installing an old (but newer than what is already installed) version from the cds? Also is it smart enough not to let me install either version of foobar if foobar 2.0.2 is already installed (or at least warn me that I'm about to go backwards)? I have looked at the cds a little bit in the last couple of days and would like to try the update but want to know for sure I understand how it is going to behave (or not). Last question: I know not to try to update my kernel using this method. Are there any other files/programs that I can't update with the Software Manager or warnings such as not updating the desktop I'm currently logged into? I believe I read that it doesn't actually count until the file in question is reloaded (as in a reboot) but am not sure. -- Wes Gregg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registered Linux User # 252649 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Using Software Manager remotely
I have a system set up that I'm trying to use headless (without a local keyboard, monitor, mouse). Most things work fine, except, it seems, for the X-window applications that require root authorization. The application that I'm particularly interested in is Software Manager. When I run it remotely, it asks for the root password and then seems to die a silent death. When I run it locally, everything is fine. I'm using eXceed as my X-window server. RE: [newbie] Using Software Manager remotely
I've set mine up to run the whole KDE desktop within exceed. I have a short script that sets my display variable to my eXceed server and then does a startkde command. export DISPLAY=192.168.0.1:0.0 startkde I'm running telnet to do the startup (internal LAN) because I had trouble with the rsh and rexec methods. Running rpmdrake from a su'ed command line does indeed work. That a workable solution, since I don't need to do it very often.
