Re: File services hangs
Did you install a new software last time? This could happen if you are runing programs, which are dealing with memory not just the best way ( i.e. few old versions of Wingate). Access to file and print services has recently started hanging...on a daily basis. When the services hang I can't even log into the server or connect in any way using naming services. It has to be manually powered off to reboot. There are no traces of any problems in the logs. No evidence of Dr. Watson. I'm Stumped and at a loss of what to even look for in Technet or the archives. RE: perfmon to log
Hi John, Have you tried Performance Data Logging from the NT Resource Kit? it allows you to capture any NT counters and log them in a CSV formatted file. I've tried using perfmon's native log format but when I choose Data From that log file, I see the Logical Disk group category but the subcategory box is empty. One possible reason is that *some* but not all of the servers I'm trying to collect data from do not have diskperf turned on. Obviously that needs to be addressed, but does one bad apple in a perfmon session spoil the whole session? I can't get data on any of the servers, not even the ones with diskperf set correctly. RE: Ideas for firewall
Yeah, we use it enterprise wide (8 Sites) on Nokia Hardware and find it to be perfect. Especaially on the Nokia boxes, there are different scaleable (can I spell?) options, and we are looking into their DSL Firewall for some remote users in Europe. We have inter-office VPN's setup between the Firewalls as well as having all our European Field Sales team come in through a VPN connection (Checkpoint SecureRemote) and are testing SecureID with it too. So my recommendation would be to go for it. But I would have to say that I have no idea what it cost us, as we bought all the Firewalls in one go from the US office to get decent pricing... Just my 2 cents (or pence...) G. Re: Get Quest Spotlight for free - at least that's what they claim
I tried the eval version too and it's concept is simple and straight to the point. Very clean and understandable interface. The prices however are totally overpriced considering that it's "nothing but" a fancy GUI for the NT Perfmon. The Price for SpotLight for Exchange was something like 3500$ per server or something in that range. It was also licensed per processor / per number of processor. Good product, messed up marketing. It should have been licenses one Admin + agents or something (there are no agents it reads perfmon counters). Spotlight for NT was around 300$, and that's per server. Also quite expensive. Hope someone else grabs up the idea and releases a smiliar tool for a decent price. regards Uso - Original Message - From: Neil Harvey To: NT System Admin Issues Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 1:39 PM Subject: Re: Get Quest Spotlight for free - at least that's what they claim I have seen a demo of this and it is very very good. I am going to have to go back through it and see if I can find the option for Web server. I don't recall seeing that. My next task is getting rid of the errors for stuff not matching. Peter - Original Message - From: Rodarte, Tomas To: NT System Admin Issues Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 12:18 AM Subject: IIS 4.0 WWW Access Fails Intermittently We have been having a strange problem lately on one of our IIS 4.0 web servers. This server will run for a few days without a single problem or error... and then out of the blue a Dr. Watson error appears. Below is the log entry for the Dr. Watson error from the Event Viewer: --- Event ID: 4097 The application, exe\inetinfo.dbg, generated an application error The error occurred on 9/22/2001 @ 3: 7:33.399 The exception generated was c005 at address 60b1fefb (nnciqdn) --- I have searched on MS Support Knowledge Base and on the Internet with no solutions that have fixed this issue. If anyone has run into something similar and may have some insight, please share this to the list and me. Looking at the DRWATSON.LOG file I found that this memory reference the Oracle client. I am going to have the Oracle DBA's re-install the client and have the web developers verify the code that uses the client. I included some of the DRWATSON.LOG at the end of the e-mail. Here some more information about this. When this crash happens, I cannot successfully start the WWW service again without closing the Dr. Watson error or killing the DRWATSON process remotely. Once this is killed, I can then restart all IIS services successfully. FYI: I'm new to the list, but I enjoy reading the e-mail that comes from it. I hope to be able to help others, and others to be able to help me sometimes. Thanks in advance! --- Microsoft (R) Windows NT (TM) Version 4.00 DrWtsn32 Copyright (C) 1985-1996 Microsoft Corp. RE: File services hangs
Title: RE: File services hangs Kliment has the right idea. Our server would hang due to a memory leak that an application had. You might want to run Performance Monitor to see if your memory usage rises steadily for no apparent reason. If so, you may have to shut down services or applications individually to find the leak. Otherwise a scheduled reboot may be in order (not a recommended solution). RE: What to check if my IIS server has been compromised.
James, In addition to all the other checks people have posted, you may also want to head over to eEyehttp://www.eeye.com/html/ and grab their free Nimda scanner (thanks Mark, et al!) to run after you've done all your patching/repairing. We have a fairly large development subnet here, I run the scanner against it daily. Some of our software developers are in too much of a rush to "bother" patching their IIS test boxes. These boxes are all internal on our network (172 IP range), nonetheless Nimda and Code Red can run amuck from the inside as well. When I find a box that hasn't been patched, I email the box admin and give him/her 15 minutes to patch it,after that I shut off the WWW service and turn off the port on the switch they are connected to...they usually find the time to patch things after that. -Jim Jim Holmgren MCSE, CCNA [EMAIL PROTECTED] Network Engineer Advertising.com Anytime, anywhere, any Internet channel-- we touch tens of millions online each day. Re: IIS and CA in 2000
Title: IIS and CA in 2000 No I wasn't. Yes I am now: Following apply it appears that the patch removed the CertSrv virtual directory from localhost - these things are sent to amuse us. Just re-create a virtual directory called CertSrv and point it to the certsrv subdirectory of %systempath%\system32\certsrv. Of course your machine is probably hugely different from mine (which will be rebuilt this weekend it is so screwed up) that you may have other issues. Form there: In your browser go to http://localhost:91/CertSrv/default.asp Select Request a Certificate - hit Next Select Advanced Request - hit Next Select the second option: "Submit a certificate request using a base 64..." - hit Next Copy and Paste the entire contents of your certreq.txt file into the "Saved Request" text field. On the Certificate Template drop-down select "Web Server" and hit Submit. If your CA is appropriately set-up you can on the next screen download and save the DER (or Base 64) encoded certificate - which can then be picked up by the IIS Assign Server Certificate Wizard. If not: you need to start the CA Management Console and manually issue the certificate request by right-clicking the request in the Pending List - you can then use http://localhost:91/CertSrv/default.aspto 'pick-up' and save the certificate from the server (or export it manually from the CA Management Console). In IIS when you 're-start' the Wizard just give it the name/location of the .cer file that was generated containing the encoded certificate. Can I maintain data drives after virus reinstall?
Concerning this nimda beast: My head is hurting from chasing it for the past eight days. I need some thoughts on areinstall ofMS NT4 and 2000on my clusters. I would have to rebuild all the shares, reinstall the SQL, andrestore the databases, to say the least. However, my databases all point to gigabytes of source files. Well, I guess I know why do you ask that. I have two IIS 5 servers. Both of them have the .asp extension associated to Notepad. You may say that's why .asp is not working but no! If you are opening an .asp page with windows explorer, yes Notepad will open it. But if you are accessing the page using Internet Explorer, notepad is not employed. Title: IIS and CA in 2000 Thanks Chris.I am going to give that a look. I am a little confused as to whether I need to re-install the q301625 after (first) un-installing/re-installing Certificate Services and (second) W2K SP 2. I have alwaysbeen told that a good rule of thumb is if you have to insert the W2KServer install CD and it copies files from it you need to re-install the latest Service pack. I am not sure if this is the case with q301625.BTW, I had already un-installed and re-installed Certificate Services/W2K SP2before I got your reply. It is all back up now. I am still having one issue that I need to deal with. I am still getting the error "The security certificate was issued by a company that you have not chosen to trust. View the certificate and to determine whether you want to trust the certifying authority". I click view the certificate, then I run the "Install Certificate" and it imports and installs successfully, but I still get the security alert each time I exit Internet Explorer and restart Internet Explorer to access the site. OT: Sending 0ut 0f 0ffice replies w/ Outlook
I really ate to post OT like this, but I can't seem to find the answer to this one. How do I configure Outlook (XP/2002) to automatically send out-of-office replies if I'm NOT using Exchange as my e-mail server? Is this even possible? I've found lots of info on how to do it with Exchange, but not without. And if it's possible to do without Exchange, how do I go about making sure that I don't send them to mailing lists? I've been so critical of others who do this that I would be terribly embarrassed to do it myself! RE: disabling 'connect as'
.. I'm a little confused as to your configuration? Are all the servers/workstations 2000? RunAS is a service on 2000 which could be stopped and set to manual to start. However, if the user has privileges to restart this does no good and why I suggest a policy to disable. If the user has a valid account he/she shouldn't have to use connect as or run as if you have security set properly. The only way to stop reinfecting your servers is to disable all shares until the users computers are virus' free which I doubt you can achieve. Users tend to scream when they can't get to information. Guess I need to hear more information. Network Login
Hi Guys, Got a small problem. One of the PC running win95 is not able to login to the NT Domain. When a User tries to login into the domain, he gets the message You are not allowed to logon from this workstation. But there's no problem for Domain administrators to logon from this 95box. This PC is connected to a hub which is connected to the switch. If I hook up the PC directly to the switch(Through the patch panel), Users are able to login. There are no workstation restrictions for the user. Any ideas would be of great help. Thanks in advance Pradeep Jose * This email may be confidential, privileged and/or protected by copyright. yup, but it has to be either NT or Win2k. Run the install from the Exchange server CD, choose custom install, and just install the Admin component (and Books Online would be good to have, too). Then install the same Exchange service pack that you have on your server(s) on the machine, and you're good to go. Roger Iron Chef - Migration -- Roger D. RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] New on NTSYSADMIN?
You should only need one rule: Anything sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] should get moved to the folder of your choosing. [text] added to the subject line munge up some other things, and we had them removed over a year ago. Alternately, if you are an Exchange user, sub a public folder to the list to receive all the mail, and then sub yourself with the nomail option. Read it from the PF and respond from your own account. W2K Server problems - Satellite
I've had a Starband 360 installed on our Windows 2000 network. It has been installed on a Windows 2000 server, an HP NetServer E800. This was a working domain server, but with only one NIC, the one which was built-in. As the installer came from a great distance, we decided to use the built-in NIC. We set the TCPIP parameters as desired by Starband - get the address from Starband, use their DNS and gateway. Obviously, this disabled the network, but we finally had broadband. We bought the Starband because they allow networking. They specifically recommend WinProxy. We bought a license for 5 computers. We also bought a NetGear FA311 10/100 PCI Network card and installed it. We now have two problems: 1. I can't seem to get the network running on the second NIC. I can ping in both directions by both name and number. (however, there are LMHOSTS files in both workstations and server). I have changed the network server address from 192.168.100.10 to 192.168.0.1 and listed that address for both DNS and gateway. That machine is the domain controller. When I try to connect to a share on the server, I variously get a not available or in use message. I tried removing a workstation and re-entering it. I tried removing the NIC and putting it in a different PCI slot although there are no conflicts showing in the system hardware diagnosis. 2. When I boot the computer with both NICs enabled, the Starband shows at first that it is working (small icon in the right side of the taskbar) and then it fails. If I disable the other network card, it works fine. It appears as if the Starband is detecting the second MAC card and turning itself off, although the Starband tech folks say that shouldn't happen. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks, Larry -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to unsub? Do that here: http://www.w2knews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=unsub Need a good FAQ? Try this one first: http://www.ultratech-llc.com/KB/

Title: IIS and CA in 2000 Shannon, Adil is right - W2K will complain if something goes wrong - usually only the result of crap application installprograms or determined manual messing around. Can you check if your CA is in the Trusted Root list - should be already ifyou installed CA as a stand-alone (IE\Tools\Internet Options\Content\Certificates - "Trusted Root Certification Authorities") I assume you did install as a Stand-alone CA? I have alwaysbeen told that a good rule of thumb is if you have to insert the W2KServer install CD and it copies files from it you need to re-install the latest Service pack. I am not sure if this is the case with q301625.BTW, I had already un-installed and re-installed Certificate Services/W2K SP2before I got your reply. It is all back up now. I am still having one issue that I need to deal with. I am still getting the error "The security certificate was issued by a company that you have not chosen to trust. I click view the certificate, then I run the "Install Certificate" and it imports and installs successfully, but I still get the security alert each time I exit Internet Explorer and restart Internet Explorer to access the site. Title: RE: Repetitive posts It is hard to tell when a question has been answered. I sent a response to a question early this morning, but my response didn't hit the server for quite a while. By the time it did hit, there had already been several responses from other list members. (Which I think is great!!) One thing that I do like to see is when a question gets answered that the question sender sends a response letting everyone know that he has resolved his issue. This will kill the thread. RE: Create a Registry File
Khurram, What I think you are asking is how to create file (.bat, .exe., etc.) that will make modifications to the registry. If that is the case, then what I have used for years is Wilson's WindowWare Winbatch with the compiler (http://www.windowware.com/winware/wb-first.html). I have used it to automate installations of applications, modify registry keys/values, check software revisions, create desktop shortcuts, map network drives and just about anything else that you could think of to assist users in a Windows environment. I'm not a programmer, so if I can do these things, anyone can. Hope this helps. Gary Pearson, MCP Expert Tech Solutions, Inc.
