User profile not unloading on TS box
Hi, We have a user on a 2003 TS box who has a problem logging on each morning. They get the standard warning about the profile not loading and get presented with a temp profile. What appears to be happening is that their NTUSER.DAT file is in use, and so the system cant instate their roaming profile from the server. The userenv.log with verbose debugging turned on shows; 09:48:20:692 ReconcileFile: Failed to delete file C:\Documents and Settings\username here\NTUSER.DAT with error = 32 I've used Process Explorer to look at the handle for that file, and it is in use despite the user not being logged on at the time. The process that's using it is apparently 'system' but I've gone through all of systems sub-processes and can't see any of them that have an active handle to the ntuser.dat file in question. I've also installed User Profile Hive Cleanup which has proven to be about as much use a chocolate tea-pot really. The only time I ever get any action from it is when I restart the service, and even then it doesn't meantion anything about this user or their profile. I've turned on Callstack logging but it's been a week now of this user not being able to log on each morning and so far UPHClean hasn't logged a dicky-bird. Does anyone else have any idea as to how I can find out what is keeping this file open after the user logs of? Rebooting the server and kicking off the other 20 users ceased to be an option after day 2. Windows based secure disk eraser
Hi gang, Does anyone have any recommendations of a secure disk erasing package for Windows? We currently use DBAN for erasing disks, which is fine where the disks are in the workstations or servers (we use it to wipe machines before giving them to charities etc) however, when we just have a hard disk its more of a problem as we mainly use laptops. I'm after something that will let me slap the disks in to a USB/e-sata caddy and then wipe them to at least DoD standards, and ideally with a similar number of options to DBAN. So far the only one I can find that looks reliably...e...reliable is Active@ KILL! (love the name). Any others? RE: reading SpamAssassin results
The total score of the filters adds up to 6.2 points, which is over their threshold of 6.0 You get 1 point for having an extraneous content-type header You get 1.4 points because you have some inline GIF in the mail you are sending out (e.g. a logo or something). There's lots of JPG/GIF based spam (where the spam message is text in an image - to get around spam filters that look for specific types of text) You get another 1.8 points because your email is Quoted-Printable but doesn't wrap at 76 characters. Those seem to be the main contributors to your score. Start SpamAssassin results * 1.0 EXTRA_MPART_TYPE Header has extraneous Content-type:...type= entry A content-type that SA isnt recognizing as legit. Perhaps the header field is being broken during the SMTP session. * 0.4 HTML_MESSAGE BODY: HTML included in message HTML email gets a positive scoring in a lot of spam filters. Quite normal. * 1.8 MIME_QP_LONG_LINE RAW: Quoted-printable line longer than 76 chars There is no legit enforcement of a plain-text line-wrap limit this low - although 72 characters is a pseudo standard. Depending on how this is scored, this could be a legit way to bolster a possible spam score. DCPromo over WAN link???
Is there anything wrong with doing DCPromo over a wan link assuming it's a halfway decent connection? I'm building a 3rd DC that will go into a DR warm site at a remote office. The remote office is connected via bonded T1's(3 megs) with a Riverbed wan optimizer, so it's pretty quick. We're talking an AD environment with under 500 people. I've read through some of Microsofts whitepapers on bringing up a DC at a remote location and they seem to suggest 2 options: - Use a switch with dcpromo to pull the AD data off a backup CD or tape instead of across the wire. - Build the DC at the main office, and change the IP address when it gets to the remote location. I'm thinking, why can't I simply take it out there, and run dcpromo over RDP? Anyone see any problems with doing it this way given this scenario? Thanks in advance, Jon . ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

RE: Server. 2003 recovery console
This could be from a variety of reasons. Its tanking once it starts loading drivers etc. What happened before? Any updates? Believe it or not, a repair install is a very safe thing to do, and it almost always works. Image the box for backup, then try it. I had this very issue from two situations, once where a bad sp install setup the wrong hal, and once where the hal got corrupted. Easy to fix from a PE disc, but took some digging to deduce. jlc -Original Message- From: John Cook [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 7:30 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Server. 2003 recovery console I have a 2003 server that went belly up over the weekend. Troubleshooting IIS 6 Permissions
I've set up a new IIS 6 site on a Server 2003 machine, and permissions are giving me a headache. Static HTML files are no problem. But when running a perl script (ActivePerl ISAPI), I get prompted to enter credentials. It has been years since I last set up a web server with perl, and I'm sure I'm overlooking something minor. I gave the IUSR accounts execute permissions on the necessary DLL files in the perl directory, which I recalled having to do from the last installation I did. But I'm obviously still missing something. I ran procmon on the server while trying to run the perl script, but it didn't show any failed attempts to access files. Any suggestions for how I can figure out exactly what's going wrong here? RE: reading SpamAssassin results
CID means you have an inline image. ARIAL2 means you have a 2 point arial font tag SARE is the Spam Assassin Rules Emporium, a set of commonly used rules for catching different types of spam in SA. So it looks like you are getting double hit for images in the email and I am not sure why the rDNS fails as cips.org seems to work fine (unless this is another domain we are talking about). I would say this SA rule set is a little more aggressive than I would be, but not super uncommon. Take a look at your headers and see what is broken there, and perhaps take a look at the footers/signatures that folks are using and see if they are causing you trouble. I am curious about the quoted printable line, how is that resolved, is that fixed in the MTA or is that a client setting (ME2?) Good luck, we fight this battle ever so often. A lot of times, admins throw in a set of old rules or don't ever update them unless something breaks. Its always easier to tell the sender to fix their end, rather than examine the rule set and make sure it continues to make sense. One of my all time favorites, I was attempting to apply for a job at Cliff Bar and Company and they advertised to send your resume to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , but their MTA wont accept email from hosts not on their white list (which at that time included hotmail and my two home domains each hosted on a different provider with reverse DNS). Needless to say, I am not working for them :) Troy -Original Message- From: Laurence Childs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 5:08 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: reading SpamAssassin results Hi All Wonder if any one can help A remote site is claiming that all mail that we send to them is being classified as SPAM They have sent me these SpamAssassin headers as an example but I can't find any tutorials on what they mean: X-Spam-Score: 6.2 (++) X-Spam-Flag: YES X-Spam-Report: 6.2/6.0 Start SpamAssassin results * 1.0 EXTRA_MPART_TYPE Header has extraneous Content-type:...type= entry * 0.4 HTML_MESSAGE BODY: HTML included in message * 1.8 MIME_QP_LONG_LINE RAW: Quoted-printable line longer than 76 chars * 1.4 SARE_GIF_ATTACH FULL: Email has a inline gif * 0.1 RDNS_NONE Delivered to trusted network by a host with no rDNS * 1.5 MY_CID_AND_ARIAL2 SARE CID and Arial2 End SpamAssassin results Anybody able to point me to a list of what these entries mean or decode what the problem may be so that I know where to start looking Thanks Laurence IMPORTANT INFORMATION Internet communications are not secure and therefore CIPS does not accept legal responsibility for the contents of any e-mail message sent via this medium. What does hardware checked out OK mean? Did you run the Windows Memory Diagnostic in Extended Test mode overnight? Can you boot a BartPE or UBCD4WIN CD successfully and access the boot drive? Machines don't go belly-up by themselves. It takes a software change or a hardware failure to cause this. Assuming the server is properly protected (firewall/antivirus) and not used improperly (e.g. surfing the net), the odds favor hardware failure. A Repair install won't affect 3rd party software but I only give it about a 50/50 chance at fixing this. AFAIK, this is done by the MTA. The content-type header usually has a Type of boundary= and|or charset=. Those are the only ones I care about anyways. type= is valid as well. Without seeing the full header, its hard to deduce what SA didn't like. FWIW, RFC's show it used as type:=, but that doesnt look right to me. I would remove that from SA, as nothing in the headers is set in stone. You can match against misuse, but to match against an unrecognized content-type seems really sketchy to me. Definitely go with the Diamond. I had the chance to use one for a bit at TechEd this year and it was so nice I actually considered switching to Sprint, in spite of their craptacular support group, due how nice a phone it is. One of the really nice features is the motion detection that senses when the phone is placed face-down on a surface and switches the phone to meeting mode. Real slick , and a nice form-factor. Re: Server Core and Windows Server Backup
I appreciate the help Michael. 1. Yes, the destination folder does exist. However, I also get the same error if I run wbadmin get disks just to get a list of the disks...so I'm thinking that perhaps there is something wrong with the service? I haven't changed any permissions on the server either on the disk or in the registry since it was setup. 2. The last scheduled backup would have been through Backup Exec. And yes, it completed successfully. 3. Am I supposed to manually allocate space for VSS to use wbadmin.exe? I hadn't seen this in the documents I've looked at for using wbadmin. 4. Yes, the volume is idle while I'm trying to perform the backup. I'll look into allocating space for VSS to see if that makes any difference. On Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 6:59 PM, Michael B. Initially I had installed the Backup Exec remote agent on the machines, but we are moving to DPM. I installed the DPM agent on the machines, and installed the Windows Server Backup feature, but I wasn't getting a backup of my system state. So, I went to the machines to try and use wbadmin to do a local system state backup to see if I could perform one apart from DPM. Here is the syntax I am using, and the error message that is given back to me: E:\wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:e:\Backup The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. I get the same error if I attempt to perform the backup from the C: drive (to the folder on the E: drive.) I uninstalled the Symantec remote agent using MSIExec. I uninstalled the WindowsServerBackup role, rebooted, installed the role, rebooted, and tried running the above command again, yet I still have the same result. To install the feature I simply entered: start /w ocsetup WindowsServerBackup Looking in the event logs I see where the Block level backup engine service successfully started. After about 5 minutes the event logs show that the BLB service successfully stops. If I look at the services, I see the BLB service is set to manual. Before I run the wbadmin command the service is stopped. After I run it the service starts. I get no errors related to the backup in the event logs beyond what the program spits back out to me (see above.) Has anyone had any similar problems? Any suggests, or care to point out anything obviously stupid that I have done so far? ;-) Thanks for any help! DDNS on wirless or not?
Greetings, The company uses windows 2003 DHCP and DNS. There are users who use docking stations and frequently doc and undock. In this case there are two separate IP ranges and it appears that in a multiple dock and undock situation, DNS will be updated the first time but will wait for lease expiration for update the next. Is there an option to override this? They are considering disabling the DDNS on the wireless side. There is the ipconfig /registerdns but I think they don't want to tell users to do that Thank you in advance! ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

Unable to receive email from Exchange 2007?
I've got a client with a non-standard SBS2003 server that was originally configured by someone who didn't know what they were doing with SBS (I.E. they didn't use any of the wizards.) I've pretty much cleaned it up, but now they have a customer that uses Intermedia hosted Exchange (Exchange 2007) that gets Requested #500 Syntax error, command unrecognized ## when trying to send to my customer. My Google-foo landed me on an Experts Exchange Question (Q_23389507) that suggests This was a DNS issue with the owner of the Domain. Someone had put an entry in to the MX for a secondary at a filtering company for no apparent reason. The syntax error was their way of reporting we don't filter your mail. Thus why owners have administrators and don't make their own changes. I'm unclear if this means an issue with Intermedia's customer ( urban-resturants.com) or with my customer (tmtdevelopment.com). Can someone who is currently using Exchange 2007 email [EMAIL PROTECTED] let me know if they get the same 500 error? RE: Unable to receive email from Exchange 2007?
Looks like you have two MX records listed for tmtdevelopment.com in dns mail.tmtdevelopment.com fail mxqueue.easystreet.com success that could be an issue. I assume your spelling of urban-restaurants.com was incorrect as your spelling has no MX. The MX listed for the correct spelling is smtp16.msoutlookonline.net / exmf016-3.msoutlookonline.net which also seems to be having some issues. I was able to send an email outbound to that tmt address so that is working, though I would remove the incorrect MX record from DNS. That means your customer is working, though there is an entry in DNS that is just taking up space and not responding. The other guys need to do a quick check on what IP/DNS names for that domain should be dealing mail. It should be a simple fix to change DNS to be the correct mail servers. Hope that helps -Troy -Original Message- From: Jim Majorowicz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 1:06 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Unable to receive email from Exchange 2007? Troy, Thank you for taking some time to help with this. The mail.tmtdevelopment.com server is the primary server I administer. Are you saying you see a problem with SMTP on this server? The easystreet.comserver is a fail-safe should something go wrong with the DSL or the server itself. However, I did get your test message. Yep, something like that... If iirc, DeltaCopy does have an ACL Repair feature for when this happens. They realized the problem and intergrated a workaround. But the can't fix it since it is a flaw in the cgwin wrapper it self... RE: Unable to receive email from Exchange 2007?
Hi Jim, Sorry I had an issue earlier telnetting to the mail.tmtdevelopment.com server, but I no longer am having that issue. Your setup looks fine, the issue lies with the other folks. -troy -Original Message- From: Jim Majorowicz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 1:35 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Unable to receive email from Exchange 2007? Troy, Thank you for taking some time to help with this. The mail.tmtdevelopment.com server is the primary server I administer. Are you saying you see a problem with SMTP on this server? The easystreet.com server is a fail-safe should something go wrong with the DSL or the server itself. However, I did get your test message. I'm unclear if this means an issue with Intermedia's customer (urban-resturants.com) or with my customer (tmtdevelopment.com). Can someone who is currently using Exchange 2007 email [EMAIL PROTECTED] and let me know if they get the same 500 error? Those look to be around $300, which is a little more than the $125 Linksys price tag, but it looks like it packs in A LOT more. I can handle that price tag. Thanks Carlos! A client was running out of server space, but many GB is static (\Install folders, for example) so they went with this: http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/linkstation/linkstation-pro-duo/ Sure is cheaper than a new server or even SAS drives. Re: remote copying
Yep yep. That all sounds right to what I went through about 5 years ago running Rsync ala Cygwin. I had to constantly run some cleanup scripts to fix the perms - or the file system could become inaccessible. Thank goodness for the Resource Kits... Its very comforting to hear that the problem is acknowledged and a fix is built-in! On Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 4:47 PM, Sam Cayze [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yep, something like that... If iirc, DeltaCopy does have an ACL Repair feature for when this happens. They realized the problem and intergrated a workaround. But the can't fix it since it is a flaw in the cgwin wrapper it self... I can attest to having ACL problems with Rsync on NTFS volumes in the past. There is an inherent flaw in the differences between NT and *nix. Fortunately for us, it's not production data, it's backup data, so ACL's don't really affect us.
