RE: XP accessing Sharepoint document libraries via webdav

2009-06-25 Thread Ken Schaefer
In theory "yes", but the built-in XP webdav redirector has a bunch of bugs, and
also doesn't support HTTPS. The IE webdav redirector does support HTTPS.

WebDAV redirector was completely rewritten in Vista, and is a lot more robust.

Hi chaps,

I have a 2008 sharepoint server at siteA and at site B i have 10 XP machines.
I'd like XP to be able to access the sharepoint doc libraries using webdav over
the internet in the same way that Vista can, ideally even mounting a doc
library as a mapped drive.

Is this doable in XP SP3 ?

I find that Microsoft's PS and PCL drivers *are* generic, Microsoft
simply ships printer definitions that specifies printer-specific
parameters such as the printer's printable area.

At my employer Microsoft's "HP LaserJet 4 PS" driver works marvelously
with most of what we have on hand ;)

If you'd like to provide a dump of the crash I will look at it for you.

It is very hard to narrow down. I've read where others are having issues with
print as well. Maybe the R2 would be better. One question is, we are an XP shop

HP's printer support is worse than their printer drivers. This is
why we're not buying HP printers anymore. Lexmark's hardware and
drivers seem comparable, and their support is better (if still less
than stellar).

For our existing fleet of HP drivers, we hacked together a generic
PCL5 driver from the HP LaserJet 4 driver Microsoft includes in
Windows XP. (We could do this because we have the source code for
that driver, since it's really just a text file.) I can post if you
like, but I don't know if it will work for your printers or Server
2008.

RE: Bleep'n window server 2008 terminal server

2009-06-25 Thread Brian Desmond
Spooler crashes are unlikely to be Microsoft's fault but instead the driver
maker.

If you'd like to provide a dump of the crash I will look at it for you.

Download the Debugging Tools for Windows -
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/Debugging/default.mspx
Install them to c:\debuggers
Open a command prompt to \debuggers
Cscript adplus.vbs -crash -pn spoolsv.exe

This will have a dump file written to a subfolder of c:\debuggers next time it
crashes. If you zip this and send it to me I will look.

Thanks,

It is very hard to narrow down. I've read where others are having issues with
print as well. Maybe the R2 would be better. One question is, we are an XP shop
and I'm not sure if the driver issues stems from there. The so called 'easy
print' is suppose to fix that. Because of the spooler crashing all the time I'm
guessing the freezing is related.

I'm really bummed, I like the remote apps, the new management applets just
about everything but it is totally unreliable!!

Thanks for feedback.

Yah, I saw all the additional logs Vista added. I gather that's
great for app developers. But we've also been told for years that all
the problems with the security log would be Fixed In The Next Release.
 Bah. Humbug.

Getting OSS solutions approved for the particular computers this is
needed for would be... problematic.

Any commercial solutions you can recommend that *don't* require a
network, a server, and/or a domain? Specifically for the logging of
changes to DACLs and SACLs.

RE: Filter Vista security log to show only audit failures?

2009-06-25 Thread Michael B. Smith
Eh, the main changes in Vista (and Server 2008, and Win7 and Server 2008 R2,
etc. etc.) were to provide the "programmer" with more control and fewer
limitations.

For example, you no longer have an effective 300 MB limit on the size of event
logs, as you did pre-Vista.

For example, you can have blobs and anytext in the description for event logs,
as you couldn't pre-Vista.

Believe me, I hear what you are saying and I agree. Just make sure you attack
the proper issue. :-)

Third parties are the solution (and yes, there are FREE as in OSS solutions in
this space).

That was it! Thanks!! I spent an hour digging through the MSFT
docs and searching the web and couldn't find anything. You always
have the answers, Bonnie! :)

> I think it's a pain compared to the old way, but I'm sure they have SOME kind
> of reason for changing it.

I'm sure they have a reason, but was it a good one? :)

I'm *REALLY* unimpressed by the security logging changes in Vista,
especially after MSFT was telling us for years that Vista would fix
all the deficiencies in the Windows security log. I guess they
figured that sprinkling magic business pixie dust (also called "XML")
on the logging subsystem would be all they needed to do.

If anything, Vista is worse than before. It used to be that the
"User" column only showed the relevant user ID for some events. The
rest of the time it was "SYSTEM" or whatever. I had hoped Vista would
change this. It sure did -- now the "User" column *NEVER* has any
useful information in it!

  Other complaints:

Trying to implement permissions auditing, I kept seeing messages
with a "Task Category" of "Subcategory could not be determined".
WTF?!? Microsoft, you *wrote* the fraking OS, how can you not know
what generated the event? I'm supposed to trust an audit subsystem
that can't figure out where it's own events came from? This is Event
ID 4670, description says "Permissions on an object were changed", for
those of you keeping score at home.

If you enable policy change logging for any of the filtering
subsystem subcategories, you get hundreds (if not thousands) of log
messages during startup as each rule is loaded. Who the frell thought
that would be helpful? Fortunately for me, I'm not using the
filtering subsystem on these computers, but I'd be scared if I was.

Trying to enable auditing on changes to file permissions is still a
lost cause. Vista *still* does access auditing on *open*, against the
open call's parameters. It appears that, in practice, just about
every program (including programs that come with Windows) asks for
WRITE_DAC on file open, even though the program never touches the
DACL. The practical upshot is that Windows generates an audit message
for *every file opened for writing*, when what you wanted was
notification of DACLs being changed. Microsoft, this has been a
problem since at least NT 4.0, how many decades is it going to take to
fix this???

Privilege auditing is still a joke. If you want a flood of useless
messages, enable this one. Microsoft event admits this: “Do not
enable auditing for privilege use because of the high volume of events
that this configuration would generate.”
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc875806.aspx) MICROSOFT,
WHY DID YOU DO THIS IF IT WASN'T GOING TO BE USEFUL??

If you have your own domain and download Wordpress, it is very easy to

Re: Filter Vista security log to show only audit failures?

L. wrote:

I've been fixing them for awhile and the LCD part is the easiest, well
after some practice that is J But for most of the guys here techwise I
don't think it be that hard. 2 screws outside 6 inside and 3 cables pops

If you're daring, you can buy the glass and digitizer from them for $60.
But I would not recommend trying to fix it yourself. I destroyed my old

a toilet. Everything is MICRO SIZE in there, and the connectors break

Normally its $100.

If you're daring, you can buy the glass and digitizer from them for $60.
But I would not recommend trying to fix it yourself. I destroyed my old

Re: Bleep'n window server 2008 terminal server

2009-06-25 Thread Tom Miller
How are you printing? Do your users have shared printers on their
desktops, direct IP on desktop, or do they select shared/direct printers
installed on the terminal server?

If you have Desktop Experience (or something like that) installed, the
client will use Easy Print where possible. There are some applications
that do not support Easy Print. Great Plains, a Microsoft product (go
figure) that we use here does not support it, yet.

There are different ways to get the printing working. I have the Print
Server role installed on my Terminal Servers, but no printers. I then
added all the printer drivers that users might require. So far so
good.

You can always give MS a call. Each incident is only $250, not too bad
compared to other vendors. I had to call MS about printing a month or
so ago because my users couldn't print at all. Turns out it was a
desktop issue.

TS 2008 is much better than 2003 in my opinions. The remote gateway
role is very nice.

Don't hold back, Phil. Tell us what you really think. :-)

Did it do this from the get-go or after you loaded up the printer
drivers? I've had printer drivers cause problems on my '03 server.
I've never seen them lock up the server though. As long as you have the
'03 to fall back on, why not start from scratch and see if you can
identify what's causing the problem?

I used it in a test environment on a beta edition of Hyper-V (running it in
a VM) and it worked quite well.
I have noticed with my G5's that if I don't update the NIC driver that RDP
is very jumpy, and often disconnects for no reason. However, once I updated
to the latest NIC drivers the problem went away. I don't know what hardware
you're running TS on, but you might take a look to see what driver updates
might be available for you. I don't know that it would effect printing
specifically though, but it is probably worth a look.

RE: Bleep'n window server 2008 terminal server

2009-06-25 Thread Phil Thompson
It is very hard to narrow down. I've read where others are having issues with
print as well. Maybe the R2 would be better. One question is, we are an XP shop
and I'm not sure if the driver issues stems from there. The so called 'easy
print' is suppose to fix that. Because of the spooler crashing all the time I'm
guessing the freezing is related.

I'm really bummed, I like the remote apps, the new management applets just
about everything but it is totally unreliable!!

Thanks for feedback.

Hi Phil
I run my TS08 in a Hyper V virtual machine. I've got Canons, Ricohs,

install the printer on the server). I love the published apps, the remote
app web page, etc. No issues here. Works great for me.

Re: Blogging

2009-06-25 Thread Peter van Houten

+1 for Wordpress-formatted blogs. Plenty of free [well supported] themes
and most of them are pretty configurable.

If you have your own domain and download Wordpress, it is very easy to
set up and use. Your ISP will have to supply a backend database as part
of your hosting account. Importantly, backup of your blog content is
well documented. Upgrade of the Wordpress software is also in place and
pretty straightforward.

Yep! Joomla doesn't come with "built-in" blog functionality and to me
works more like a CMS than a Blog. For instance, I'd consider
MyItforum.com more of a CMS solution than a blogging solution. I say if
all you want to do is write and tag articles then go with Wordpress for
blogging.

I had a screen crack by the phone hitting the floor on its corner... Darn

Mission Repair does a great job of fixing that, BTW. Reasonable prices, and

Search on a tool called Rancid.

It's free, just SSHs out to your devices every and dumps the config

That's not change management per se though. Any number of commercial tools will

Hey all,

Windows Vista. Event Viewer. The security audit log (Windows Logs
-> Security). I want to filter so that only "Audit Failure" events
are shown.

I can click "Filter current log" in the "Actions" bar on the right.
I get options to include/exclude "Event level" checkboxes. I see
"Critical", "Error", "Warning", "Information", and "Verbose", but not
"Audit Failure" or "Audit Success". I find that if "Information" is
included, I see everything; if excluded, I see nothing.

  What am I missing?

The concept is similar, but the Incase doesnt have a built-in clip of
any sort. But what I find more important is that its a full enclosure
for protection. i.e. If the phone falls flat on its face on a flat
surface, it wont get any damage to the screen.

Odd that no one has yet to mention DotNetNuke but I agree with using Wordpress
over Blogger. The question you have to ask is whether you want to host it at
Wordpress.com, which has a few limitations, or create and maintain your own
domain and pay hosting fees. I say if you plan on having more than two sites
but don't have your own server to host from then get with GoDaddy and select a
decent hosting plan. Then configure Adsense and other Ads to try and recoup
those costs. That's if you plan on trying to make money from your blogs.

Anyone know how to enumerate the sig on only what _is_ mounted, so when a disk

I almost did not buy it for that exact reason. That being said, you can
still use the stick-on screen protectors with this case. I don't see any
issues with privacy as I turn the screen off after I use the phone.

The battery capacity is larger than others I saw when researching. That
and the fact that I've had other CaseMate items that were good, sold it
for me.

YMMV

This is the big problem with this case.

Q) Can you put the iPhone in the holster with the face towards the
inside? This would protect the screen and privacy. Please advise.
Thanks.
A) The iPhone 3G fuel can only be inserted with the screen facing out.

If I could face the iPhone screen towards my body, I'd buy it today.

Re: IPhone 3g

2009-06-25 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
+1. Many core Apple apps can multitask. The iPhone just doesnt let
3rd party apps do it.

Jailbreak your phone and a whole new world opens up to you. If not to
multi-task, at least to get status icons on the top bar. Two
Jailbeak/Cydia apps I would *highly* recommend for any tech or
productivity-inclined person:

1. sbsettings - two-finger status bar touch functionality to slide
out a customizable task tray. The tray can contain toggles for things
like WiFi, BT, iPod, and many other extremely useful things. This is
fantastic for managing functionality in terms of power use and
over-all convenience.

2. StatusNotifier - status bar icons for new mail, sms, vm, etc.
Immensily useful to always be able to see if you have unacknowledge
communications while using any app.

These are two things that I dont understand why the iPhone doesnt do
natively. They are simple and small apps that dont harm the phones
performance, and are yet immensly useful.

For Jailbreaking, I recommend QuickPWN. They had a break for the 3.0
beta and are close to the fll release for 3.0. It is by far the
easiest/fully-automated Jailbreak that there is. QuickPWN actually
saved my iPhone from being bricked because of a legitimate 3.0 beta
problem that otherwise would have gone back to Apple to fix.

The timer/stopwatch does continue to work if you exit the application.
Likewise, the iPhone will continue to play your music if you exit the
iPod application and do something like access the browser. To prove
that these things are true, I just started a stopwatch, exited to iPod,
started a song, exited to Safari, loaded a web page, continued to listen
to the song, exited back to the stopwatch and saw that I spend 1:45 of
my life debunking this while still listening to the song (I was typing
this message at the same time, it needn't have taken that long).

The thing that you should take away from that is that "no multi-tasking"
is a bit over-hyped. The iPhone absolutely can multi-task, Apple just
doesn't let developers do it. It's all about battery life. There are,
however, rumors that Apple is open to allowing select vendors run
background tasks and is in talks with them about it. I have no idea if
the rumors are true or will bear out any results. Again, you are free
to agree or disagree with the philosophy, but their goal is to preserve
battery life, and the reality of it is that it is pretty elegantly
handled.

Re: IPhone 3g

2009-06-25 Thread Jonathan Link
This is the big problem with this case.

Q) Can you put the iPhone in the holster with the face towards the inside?
This would protect the screen and privacy. Please advise. Thanks.
A) The iPhone 3G fuel can only be inserted with the screen facing out.

If I could face the iPhone screen towards my body, I'd buy it today.

I recommend iPhone roadwarriors get a battery pack like the 'Power
Slider' made by Incase:

My experience with it: Excellent life extension, comfortable to hold,
easy to slide in/out of pockets, and it sustained a 3ft drop onto tile

iPhone or even the case itself.

DotNetNuke is pretty complicated. Joomla seems a bit easier to implement
and manage.

Odd that no one has yet to mention DotNetNuke but I agree with using
Wordpress over Blogger. The question you have to ask is whether you want to
host it at Wordpress.com, which has a few limitations, or create and
maintain your own domain and pay hosting fees. I say if you plan on having
more than two sites but don't have your own server to host from then get
with GoDaddy and select a decent hosting plan. Then configure Adsense and
other Ads to try and recoup those costs. That's if you plan on trying to
make money from your blogs.
I shudder at the thought of Wordpress linking to Live Spaces but whatcha'
gonna do?

I use WordPress for a few sites I host off a WAMP server and it's super
easy. If on Wordpress.com simply create a new account, select a template,
customize it, add your plugins, create some pages, and start blogging.

Re: IPhone 3g

2009-06-25 Thread Sherry Abercrombie
I've got about 20 iPhones here, they haven't caused any additional calls to
Help Desk, or any additional support on my part. The hardest part of
allowing them to access email was setting up the documentation to give to
the user to show them how to connect. They must have approval from their
manager before we allow the access. All users have mobile & OWA access
disabled until we receive a request and managers approval to allow it.

This has saved us about $2000 in BB licensing alone, not to mention the cost
of the devices that the user is spending.

I'm kinda ambivient about the iPhones, they seem really cool, and have lots
of apps, but it's not something I personally must have. I may upgrade to
one when my personal cell phone has an upgrade available, or I might just
get a BB for myself. Well see about that sometime in Nov.

For what I need at this point I think I will stick with the WordPress/Live
Spaces setup. I am only learning at this point.

Odd that no one has yet to mention DotNetNuke but I agree
with using Wordpress over Blogger. The question you have to ask is whether
you want to host it at Wordpress.com, which has a few limitations, or create
and maintain your own domain and pay hosting fees. I say if you plan on
having more than two sites but don't have your own server to host from then
get with GoDaddy and select a decent hosting plan. Then configure Adsense
and other Ads to try and recoup those costs. That's if you plan on trying to
make money from your blogs.
I shudder at the thought of Wordpress linking to Live Spaces but whatcha'
gonna do?

RE: IPhone 3g

2009-06-25 Thread Steven M. Caesare
As for "debunking", I didn't claim that the iPhone couldn't do it.. I
was responding to the "users don't really multitask" comment with
practical examples where having multiple processes running
simultaneously are handy...

So are you saying that if you buy multiple apps, they can't run
concurrently?

As another example... I have a 3rd party GPS tracking application I run
in the background while on trips and running other 3rd-party apps,
including a database application and having another mapping app in the
foreground. That wouldn't work?

RE: IPhone 3g

2009-06-25 Thread Mayo, Bill

Again, you are free
to agree or disagree with the philosophy, but their goal is to preserve
battery life, and the reality of it is that it is pretty elegantly
handled.

Except that on my winmobile device, I like to be able to have a
timer/stopwatch going while I check email... the music player going
while I'm surfing, etc...

Were you aware that WordPress is some how gotten connected up with Live
Spaces? I was looking at that earlier.
