RE: 17 Patches coming out from Microsoft this month.

2011-04-07 Thread Brian Desmond
I can never figure this out. What's the difference to you whether they ship 2
patches or 17? This seems like just your basic sensational headline to me. It's
the same deployment effort. I doubt you're fully qualifying each patch
individually and communally in a full test environment where you'd see
substantial increase in test overhead.

Thanks,

Re: Opinion on rebuilding Raid 5

2011-04-07 Thread Jon Harris
When you do replace the system add a couple of drives for spares but gloss
over that detail unless really questioned on it. Your new machine would
then have 2 hot spares. I usually would also bundle in the full 5 year
service contract on replacement servers for this reason as well when working
for the state. Don't lie but don't highlight the upgrades. This usually
will not get the bosses upset and make yours and their lives a little
easier down the road when you go asking for something.

Don't add to your risk, let it rebuild completely, even if it means waiting

If you don't have a hot spare then NO!

If you do have a hot spare, then it should have kicked in when the
previous drive failed, and you would currently not be seeing any
rebuilds with the drive you already replaced...

I'd recommend against it.

There are exceptions.

Note that you aren’t required to pay mileage expenses. The IRS
allows people to deduct vehicle expenses (or a portion thereof),

What are your thoughts? Should or would you set daily minimums

You can look to the Gov for reimbursement amounts.

As far as policy goes, I think it's pretty typical to only reimburse for
travel above and beyond the employee's normal commute. I wouldn't set such a
strict policy (monthly allowance) that would prevent your reps from
providing customer service, but that's just me.

Re: ?? on Field service reps / Mileage expense

2011-04-07 Thread Daniel Rodriguez
I think the norm is as follows;

Mileage is counted from office to customer site. Rate of mileage
reimbursement normally is around $.48 per mile, or what the IRS allows.
(Some companies pay less, but you can deduct the difference on your Federal
Taxes.)
If the Field Rep goes from house to customer site, subtract 10 miles, (some
subtract 30 miles) from their daily mileage. Some companies do not allow you
to include the mileage from home to first customer site. Just site to site.

I have never worked for a company that provided a Monthly Gas Allowance.
Some companies are a bit leery about providing that, as the amount they
provide may not fully cover the amount of gas that you really use for
business purposes. From what I have encountered, though, a Monthly Gas
Allowance is an option normally given to the sales force of a company, as
they may 'see' clients, and perspective clients on a day to day basis.
Whereas the service force will do more mileage based upon the amount of
calls that they do per day and where they have to go to perform service.

Hope that helps. Others?

Does not surprise me. We've had a couple servers blue screen, and the
memory dump pointed to KLIF.SYS in one of them.

My Kaspersky guy tells me that (for this specific system, at least) we
are a bit behind on revision patches. I'll have him check the other ones
we've seen go 2019 recently.

IF your controller supports it, ADG (RAID6) is even better than RAID5 +

If you don't have a hot spare then NO!

If you do have a hot spare, then it should have kicked in when the
previous drive failed, and you would currently not be seeing any
rebuilds with the drive you already replaced...

I'd recommend against it.

Wouldn't you be better served by running raid6 with a single hot spare?
Running raid5 with data drives at 1tb or larger is a nightmare no

MmSt

So if we see MmSt as the top tag for instance consuming far and away the
largest amount, we can look at pooltag.txt and know that it's the memory
manager and also using that tag in a search engine query we might get
the more popular KB304101 which may resolve the issue!

You can also use Ken's Article

Note that the SbAp module is occupying 165577272 bytes of nonpaged

Lately, we;ve had a number of systems exhibit event ID 2019, "server was
unable to allocate from the system non-paged pool because the pool was
empty". The system eventually becomes unresponsive, and I have to
reboot, to clear it. Something is causing a memory leak, but I'm having
trouble figuring out what.

I ran "memsnap -p memsnp.txt", to capture kernel pool information.
Later, I went back and ran it again, and then did a "memsnap -a", to
analyze. And the lines with the biggest change are something with a tag
of "MmSt", with a change of ~2M bytes, and "SbAp" with a change of
almost 9M.

But what am I to make of this info? Where do I look to figure out what
"MmSt: and "SbAp" are? And what program/process they belong to, so I can
track down the culprit?

What does Dell Server Support say? I can't remember the details, but a
firmware and OpenManage upgrade later, my "failed drive" was back up and
running. I can't remember the details because it was 2-3 years ago.
This was a 2550 which whose service contract had run out like 3 years
previously.

Despite the bad press Dell sometimes gets in this forum, the techs are
only concerned with whether or not they can get your server back up and
running, not whether or not you have a valid support contract. (Parts,
however, would be a different matter...)

Then again, a firmware upgrade would involve another trip back to the
remote site...

only concerned with whether or not they can get your server back up and
running, not whether or not you have a valid support contract. (Parts,
however, would be a different matter...)

Then again, a firmware upgrade would involve another trip back to the
remote site...

There is a CentOS live CD from Dell called OMSA that can be used for certain
models to run updates, BIOS upgrades and certain firmware updates. It also has
the dset and online diags on it but you can configure a network interface and
SSH the system, so you can run things remotely.

If you don't have a hot spare then NO!

If you do have a hot spare, then it should have kicked in when the previous
drive failed, and you would currently not be seeing any rebuilds with the drive
you already replaced...

I'd recommend against it.

I'd recommend against it.

Opinion on rebuilding Raid 5

2011-04-07 Thread John Cook
So I have a Dell 2850 with 6 drives in raid 5 and one completely failed and
another is predicted to according to the OpenManage software. I replaced the
failed one and it's rebuilding but I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on
whether or not I can replace the suspect drive before the other one completes
it's rebuild as this is a remote office and I really don't want to drive back
out here just to swap a drive out.

RE: Need help with DFS

2011-04-07 Thread Free, Bob
In my mind, that is not necessarily an error, more of a condition. As in "my
sysvol is in journal wrap state"

Google journal wrap.

Basic description-

The USN journal is a log of fixed size that records all changes that take place
on NTFS 5.0-formatted partitions. NTFRS monitors the NTFS USN journal file for
closed files in FRS replicated directories as long as FRS is running.

Journal wrap errors occur if a sufficient number of changes take place while
FRS is turned off such that the last USN change that FRS recorded during
shutdown no longer exists in the USN journal during startup. The risk is that
changes to files and folders for FRS replicated trees may have taken place
while the service was turned off, and no record of the change exists in the USN
journal. To guard against data inconsistency, FRS asserts into a journal wrap
state.

Well, it's saying that there's an error in the "jrnl_wrap" for NTFRS. I've got
a call in to a consultant to help with this, but he's not going to be available
until about 2:30. :-( That being said, one of the servers was down for awhile
Tuesday night, which might also have contributed to the problem (power
outage...the server was shut down automatically by the PowerChute
software.) Realistically, I think it was likely the "unsafe" shutdown that
occurred when I tried to force the second server to come back up before the UPS
was ready.

RE: Need help with DFS

2011-04-07 Thread Phil Garven
You may need to do the following
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762

On the server with the issue setting the global BurFlags registry key to D2
should tell that server to recreate its replica from any available source (the
other server that is working)

In the rare case that all replicas are in the same state you then need to use
the value of D4 on one server to set it to be authorative then use the D2
setting on the other servers to get them to update from that one.

I've only had to do this once so I'm far from an expert in the area

When I did it, it made copies of the old data before recreating the new replica
so watch out for disk space issues

Regards,

Phil Garven

Need help with DFS

2011-04-07 Thread John Aldrich
Ok, I apparently accidentally broke DFS replication yesterday testing my UPS
-- it shut down one of the two servers unexpectedly and now DFS won't
replicate. I have followed the instructions here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753479(WS.10).aspx and tried to
restart the replication, but it isn't replicating.

Any ideas? Windows 2003 R2, fully updated.

HELP!!!

I'd like to export them to the file system only. Some of these documents

Check out CrashPlan Pro. Just came across it but haven't utilized it
yet - I probably will test it out soon.

You can do cloud based or host it yourself.

I currently use Mozy Business for remote users, and a home brew backup
solution for local users, but I might switch everyone to CrashPlan.

We currently use Druva Insync to back up our laptop fleet. As the
license is up for renewal I'm looking at what the options are.

I'm looking for something that is transparent to the end user in so much
as once installed they don't need to ever do anything beyond connect to
the network/vpn once in a blue moon.

Cloud is out, we want it hosted on our servers, and we want something
that is centrally managed and will email/alert us (and possibly the
user) automatically if a user doesn't backup for X days.

I wondered what those of you that do this are using and how you find it?

We have tested backup exec system recovery 2010 and it works like a champ. It's
only meant to be for Windows machines.

Full backups are quite well compressed and take not much time. you can
configure it once and forget (you can rotate old backups). It can back up on an
external USB disk or on a CIFS share.

The impressive feature was that full backups can be used as a disaster recovery
backup with a CD Symantec provides (an extra that you have to pay with a
different licencing but it's worth it). The most impressive thing of the DR
option is that you can even restore it on a different hardware (I tried from a
Dell to a HP) and apart of installing new drivers, it works smoothly.

Miguel

RE: VMware disk latency

2011-04-07 Thread Ryan, Randy
I'll toss out what we just recently discovered on an IBM 3500 SAN.

After much log generating and reviewing counters showing excessive disk latency
in VMware, IBM Hardware Tech support reviewing logs and finally getting to LSI
to have them look at the controller info, LSI discovered 1 of the disks had an
issue with writing to the disk cache. Nobody noticed it and the counters
didn't seem big enough to make a difference. After all, it was just one drive
out of 12 in a Raid 5 array, what difference would that make? Well, replaced
the drive and it dropped the latency from above 300ms for the array down to 5
to 10 ms.

Long story short, check your drive diagnostics for any issues before you lay
the blame on your other hardware.

Yes, and that is why I asked. HP has several low end controllers for those
boxes and they are mind boggling POS's.
Toss in a good battery backed (cache enabled) controller and see the difference.

Joseph, I can't find the build info for that box, but it looks to be a built in
SATA controller. (SmartArray E200i)

Does that sound like a viable option?

Thanks,

Subject: OT: VMware disk latency

I have an ESXi4 setup on a HP ML350 G5 running a RAID5 array of sata drives for
the primary datastore and a drobo iscsi array for the secondary datastore. 2
VMs on each datastore. 4 VMs total. All w2k8.

When I do a large file copy to any of the VMs from a share on a different
physical machine there is huge latency, and not just on the machines hosted on
the drobo. Okay, not the fastest disk arrays in the world, but I wonder if my
bottleneck is elsewhere though. Durring the file copy, latency on the physical
disks shoots up to 200-500 Milliseconds. But on the Virtual disks, the latency
is literally 10 times that, with the other machine on that datastore
essentially mirroring the physical disk. Subsequently, the machines
effectively stop responding.

Durring a file copy to vm1 the latencies look like this:

Physical DAS latency 300 ms
vm1 vdisk on DAS latency 3,000 ms
vm2 vdisk on DAS latency 300 ms
Physical iSCSI latency 0 ms
vm3 vdisk latency 0 ms
vm4 vdisk latency 0 ms

Is this to be expected? Why the ten-fold discrepancy between the actual disk
and the virtual disk?

Any insights would be appreciated,

-Bill

Outlook archive doesn't seem to let me select just the inbox.

Any suggestions?
