RE: Recommendations - Laptop for Virtualization

2011-05-16 Thread Ken Schaefer
I'm using a Sony Z (which you can't get anymore unfortunately)

However a lot of the corporate models will have:

a) Main drive bay

b) Option to put a second drive in the optical bay

c) Powered eSATA (put another SSD in a PeSATA case)

I'd avoid having a regular mechanical drive at all if you can avoid it (unless
you really need bulk storage of installation media etc.) I do keep a 750GB 2.5"
drive around for that, but I put my most commonly used installation ISOs on a
32Gb SD card. I have 256GB internal SSD, plus 2 x 240GB SSDs for the VMs. Most
VMs seem to be around 10-20GB, so that gives you the ability to store a large
number.

Cheers
Ken

on RAM, CPU, and video. It will come in about $2k US. I will also be getting
an e-SATA drive setup (most likely a build my own as it will allow me to
replace the drive later) to put all the VM's and Virtual manager server and
direct boot from the e-SATA. If you have the extra money I would look at a
Dell Precision laptop. You can get a lot more RAM but the cost of the base

Today VMware announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement
to acquire Shavlik Technologies, a leading provider of easy-to-use,
effective cloud-based IT management solutions for small and medium
businesses (SMBs). With this acquisition, VMware will leverage Shavlik's
expertise in SMB IT to provide broader and more compelling cloud-based
capabilities to manage, monitor and secure physical and virtual
environments. With simple and affordable cloud-based offerings, VMware
empowers SMBs to focus on running the business rather than worry about
IT.

Today's announcement builds upon the successful relationship built
between VMware and Shavlik via VMware GO(tm), a joint SaaS offering
assisting SMBs with rapid deployment and management of VMware
vSphere(r). In addition, Shavlik's on-premise solutions provide
comprehensive IT Management, Compliance Management and Security options
for customers wanting to deploy this solution behind their own firewall.

On behalf of VMware, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome
you to VMware and look forward to working with you. Whether you are new
to VMware or a long time customer, we value your business and want to
provide an update on what to expect now that Shavlik's products and
expertise have transferred to VMware.

VMware and Shavlik have proven track records in delivering easy-to-use,
cost effective IT solutions that enable hundreds of thousands of SMBs to
take advantage of modern, transformative IT models like virtualization
and cloud computing, without requiring the skill and staff resources of
larger enterprises. Together, the two companies will build upon this
success with a complete portfolio for managing, monitoring and securing
IT environments, offering SMBs:

* Centralized IT Management Services - Enabling SMBs to manage
core IT functions through a single pane of glass, centralizing asset
management, security, business continuity and data protection
capabilities
* Simplified Deployment and Automation - Enables SMBs to rapidly
evolve existing systems to virtual and cloud models without requiring
significant in-house skills or resources
* Automated IT Management - Delivering efficiency and automation
to SMBs for core IT management functions, including patch management,
compliance, configuration and more

VMware is committed to providing you with continuity and investment
protection including smooth upgrade paths to greater functionality and
access to high quality services. We intend to accelerate innovation
related to these critical offerings, and collaborate with you to
continue to deliver value for your investment. You will continue to be
supported by the Shavlik Technologies sales and support personnel as you
are today.

We look forward to serving you and enabling your journey to a

Many times you can put a spare hard drive in the same bay as the CD rom
goes.

Also, if an external drive is ok, look for an esata connection.

I have an old Precision M90 on my desk right now running ESXi 4.1. You

Subject: Recommendations - Laptop for Virtualization

Hi All,

I need to purchase a laptop to run a virtualized test environment on.
So it will need a CPU that supports VT of course. I'm thinking quad core
would be best to handle the VM load.
I'd like to have the option of running an SSD for the primary drive and
a large SATA drive for storage.
I'm having a hard time finding which laptops support 2 hard drives.
It would be nice if it had mobile broadband (WWAN) support, so I could
just pop a SIM card in it - I keep breaking my dongle ;) but I doubt
I'll find a high powered laptop with that option.
Any recommendations, opinions would be great.

Thanks,
Mark

As said, just expand the drive using the VI Client and then use diskpark
from within the VM to expand the drive online.

I think I've used extpart once but that was only because it was a boot
drive, for additional volumes just stick with diskpart as it's included
with Windows.

Starting with W2K8, diskpart can expand boot partitions too. But in, w2k3, if
you're expanding the boot partition, you need to attach that drive to different
server as a non-boot drive.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

The archive file is only at 700MB.
No emails are set to expire
Messages are set to move rather than delete
The archive file is in fact the right archive file

My theory is he's somehow deleting emails without realizing it.

RE: Adding Drive space in vSphere client

2011-05-16 Thread Garcia-Moran, Carlos
+1

Quickest method, add space to the VM's thru the console, and then use dell's
"extpart" to expand the space within the OS, Done this tons of time's I've
never had an issue

#2 use Gparted ISO to boot the guest into and expand partition with it.

#3 super safe , add a 2nd drive to the size you want, clone A to B with size
expansion, remove A, boot server back, re assign drive letters

Cheers!

Subject: Adding Drive space in vSphere client

I have a few virtual machines that I need to add more disk space. These are NOT
boot drives and OS is Windows 2003.
What is the "best" method? Dell used to have a utility but it's pulled and
apparently not "safe"?

That's why I'm asking.

My response contained an answer in the first match. As the poster of a
question, I would *treasure* any response that leads to an answer, no matter
how passively aggressive as you call it, or "instructive" as I would call it,
the answer happens to be. And it took all of 1 minute out of my day.

For John Cook, check the first match of the results... it contains a PS script,

Have you tried forcing the mail to be plain text by setting this option on the
recipient in Exchange server? There's a checkbox labeled "always send to
receipient in RTF format" or something similar. (I'm speaking from Exchange
2003 experience; assume this is still relevant to newer versions)

I saw you mnetioned plain text, but wasn't sure if that was done client-side or

Hi Guys,

I'm very confused and hope someone can help shed some light on the
situation.

I have a client who has AutoArchive turned on within Outlook 2007.
Connected to Exchange 2003.

Suposedly and I haven't seen this myself emails are autoarchiving and
NOT being put into his archive folders.

For example under: Inbox\Projects\Client X there are several emails that
have been auto archived.

Checking Archive Folders\Projects\Client X shows none of the missing
emails.

Can anyone provide a suggestion or two?

Shawn

RE: Auto Archive Loosing Email

2011-05-16 Thread John Aldrich
Double-check which archive folder Outlook is using. My *guess* is that it's
using a different "archive" folder than the user is expecting (i.e. user has
an "archive" folder showing in Outlook, but Outlook is probably archiving to
a different folder than the one showing.)

Hi Guys,

I'm very confused and hope someone can help shed some light on the
situation.

I have a client who has AutoArchive turned on within Outlook 2007.
Connected to Exchange 2003.

Suposedly and I haven't seen this myself emails are autoarchiving and NOT
being put into his archive folders.

For example under: Inbox\Projects\Client X there are several emails that
have been auto archived.

Checking Archive Folders\Projects\Client X shows none of the missing emails.

Can anyone provide a suggestion or two?

Shawn

I would look at using Cusrmgr.exe from the Windows 2000 resource kit, if
you want to do a quick en-masse home directory update

But if the home directories was mapped via DFS, and you didn't lose the

Subject: Server failure and restore procedures

Hello Folks,

I had a server failure over the weekend (2008): a hard drive failed and
that somehow killed the server. It was raid 5, but somehow the raid
config insisted it was raid 0. Weird. Server was old anyway. Off to
pasture...

I use DFS to copy user files onto a large storage server so I can copy
those files elsewhere and create new shares in a pinch like this. That
worked fine.

Anyone have a powershell script to update the users' home folder en
masse? I'm not up to speed on powershell, and that could have saved me
some time.

Anyone have a method to quickly update GPOs with path information? For
example, change server1\share to server2\share ?

As for my drive maps that point to DFS shares, I suppose those will go
to the next server in another site? I have a few DSF name spaces with
one server at HQ a member, the one that failed, and other members are
servers in other Sites.

Server was not a DC/DNS/DHCP server so removing from AD will be easy
enough.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Tom

Re: Server service will not start on windows 2008 R2 enterprise

2011-05-16 Thread James Rankin
I saw that error (ERROR_NOLOGON_WORKSTATION_TRUST_ACCOUNT, error 1808)
before when I was having some problems with logon actions. I was trying to
create shortcuts on a redirected desktop that pointed to a shared area on a
NetApp filer. For some reason, the security context seemed to be a little
screwed-up. I got around this by copying the shortcuts locally first and
then moving them to the shared area later in the logon process.

I'm a little confused as to what correlation the Server service could have
with a shared area on your filer, though - AFAIK the Server service deals
with hosting shares, rather than accessing them, that's the job of the
Workstation service - but it seems a little coincidental. Do you have folder
redirection configured in any way? Is there a drive being mapped out to the
filer at login? Is there some sort of shared storage connected to the NetApp
from the server?

I also remember that this error was generated specifically when creating
App-V shortcuts using AppSense, so I don't know if you are using either of
these technologies as well.

It might be an idea to run a Process Monitor as you try and start the Server
service to see exactly what it is trying to do, and if it is trying to
access a network location in some way.

Sorry couldn't be of more help,
