You would need to enable File access auditing in Audit Policy (under Security Policy in GPO-land). You would then need to create SACLs (Security ACLs, used for auditng (permissions are DACLs)) on the objects in question (files/folders), auditing Success for WRITE_DAC. That's the theory, anyway. In practice, NT generates all kinds of audit events for permissions that were simply requested but never used, and it turns out that lots of things (including Windows Explorer) request everything for everything they do. Microsoft eventually introduced some separate event IDs for actually *using* the thing being audited. I don't remember if that had shown up by 2003 or not. And without subcategory audit policies (I'm pretty sure those are not in 2003) you still get a ton of useless audit events to slow down the system and fill up the log. -- Ben ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin

Re: Task Scheduler question in W2K8R2
That gets to be a more involved question. Yes, the default for this setting out of the box is disabled. We are in the process of working towards CIS compliance. On W2K3 systems this setting is required for compliance, and since it doesn't affect Scheduled Tasks on W2K3 systems there were no issues. Now on 2008 systems it does have an affect, so we need to work with our compliance group to have an exception to the CIS standard. Not a huge issue, just something we were not aware of. RE: SSL hack
Ok, I have some insight on this one from a very trusted source. 1) It requires a successful man in the middle attack which is not that easy to do with SSL and it requires you to be on the same subnet as the victim or the SSL host. 2) The attack has been around for years, the only thing new here is that someone sort of built a tool to do it and is getting press coverage. 3) Very low risk. 4) Part of the exploit will be killed very quickly now that it has gone public. I am putting my SSL certs back in now. From: Andrew S. RE: Age Discrimination in IT
I think it's more of a function of the SE than age-related. Also, sometimes technology moves in a way that causes some to lose interest. Sometimes interest changes too, when I was younger I was all over the various chipsets, CPU's, etc (lol, like 386SX or DX!), and over time I've become far less latest hardware aware than latest ability to do something new. The only time I do much on the hardware side is when I need to make a recommendation, I spend a day or two getting up to speed on the latest hardware. Re: Network Scanner Recommendation
Budget? Three years ago purchased a Fujitsu Fi-6010N. It has worked very well for us. It is a secondary scanner (mostly use MFP devices), but it has scanned well over 50,000 pages without any need for service. I have a kit to replace some parts that are worn out. I bought it around the 50,000 page mark, which is the recommended service interval, but have not had any complaints or problems reported, so I haven't used the kit, yet. You can get service contracts for it, too. I think we spent ~$3,000 for it. We have a couple of Toshiba copiers (one mono, one color) that also functions as network scanners. You can load 50 pages into the feeder, runs at 50 pages/min, duplex scans. If you need a copier or need to replace a copier, it's a good way to get network scanning that's very robust and reliable. Makes an excellent network printer, as well. -- Bob Hartung Dir of I.T. RE: SSL hack
In fact in the lab they talked of using a Trojan to sniff for them. To be fair, 99% of the time I'd probably just install a keylogger/screengrabber if I could get a Trojan on, but there certainly are circumstances where sniffing and attacking SSL would be preferable. Expect to see the time to exploit dropping very quickly as this attack is refined ... BTW .. did Firesheep fundamentally change anything? Hell no .. 'cause no one (in the scheme of things) understands it and the big websites know only a relatively small number of in the know people will jump up and down. SSL is still not even vaguely standard across the board despite such an easily automated cookie theft attack. I’ve read a few threads on here regarding alternatives to tape, but haven’t really found what I’m looking for. Right now, several of my clients are using a removable drive system from Addonics called the Ruby Drive Cartridge System (http://www.addonics.com/products/ruby/ruby_dcs.asp). This system is nice because it connects via esata or usb and uses 2.5” harddrives as the storage medium. Backups are very fast through esata. Our fileserver backs up about 140GB in about 35 minutes with this system using cheap 500GB drives. The only problem with this system is the manufacturing quality and consistency. I’ve gotten a few cartridges that won’t plug in properly to the cradle, and others don’t slide in and out smoothly. It really seems like it’s cheaply made. Are there any other removable drive systems out there that use 2.5” drives like this? I’m really surprised that I have not been able to find a higher quality system than this one. RE: Virtualisation software
Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the free server core) doesn't require CAL's in and of itself, you only need CAL's for the VM's you are running on it. On the bottom of this page is a link for licensing details: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/hyper-v-server/buy.aspx From that page: A Windows Server 2008 CAL must be purchased for every user or device that accesses or uses Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, except under the following circumstances * If the instances of the server software are accessed only through the Internet, without access being authenticated or otherwise individually identified by the server software or through any other means. * If the server software being accessed is Windows Web Server 2008, Windows Web Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 Foundation, or Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation. * If external users are accessing the instances of the server software and if a Windows Server 2008 External Connector license for each server being accessed has been acquired. * If up to two devices or users are accessing the instances of the server software for the purpose of administering those instances. Last but not least * If Windows Server 2008 R2 serves solely as a virtualization host (CALs for the appropriate edition of Windows Server running in the virtual machine(s) are still required). Doesn't take stock market it takes priorities, like not feeling compelled to keep up with the Jonses :-). It also depends on your definition of retirement. I'm 45 and am retiring when my house is paid off in 16 years or so. Retiring to me means working when I want to and for whom I want to. If I have to work 1-2 days/ week for income purposes but I get to pick the days and the hours then that's retirement in my book! I know two of the big healthcare vendors, those that supply HCIS to providers, have a hiring policy just like that for the programming side. Low pay, long hours but a great thing to put on a resume. Having gone through this two years ago most of the applicants I was competing against were in the sub 35 age range and when ever I got an interview the major questions were about pay and how low I would go, and a lot less on skills. I know at least one place I did not get an interview but an insider told me they only hired those right out of college or high school as they did not want anyone questioning the management staff about decisions. I'm with you on that, David. I couldn't even say what the newest pc chipset was. Yeah, to be blunt, that budget is unrealistic. I hated spending as much as I did on the Fuji, at the time. However, I have not messed with it since I set it up. RE: DC's and FRS errors
Have you gotten this resolved? We had an issue here where 1 out of 4 of our DCs was not replicating (W2k3 domain). I had MS help me with the issue, back in February, and it ended up being broken mount points in the Sysvol folder. They told me that it seemed like someone had manually copied/created one or more of the Sysvol folders on the DCs. I don't know, if that happened, it was prior to me starting here. They had me backup Sysvol on all of the DCs and run a utility that rebuilt it and created new mount points. Might be worth the small price to just call them and knock it out quickly. I can always go to the powers that be and tell them that this is what they need and why and see what they want to do. http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Fujitsu-Scansnap-network-fi-6010n-i-scanner/1912903.aspx This is the same model as what I have. It's come down about $1,000, IIRC. It has a high duty cycle, which was a high priority for us. My boss wanted to go the $1,000 scanner route, but I pointed out the distinct possibility that it would probably require a greater interval of service, and my argument was set. Thankfully, spending the extra $$$ has paid off well. It scans both sides of a sheet at the same time, discarding empty pages. I did not pay for a service contract on it, my boss and I thought the gamble was worth it. She gambles on things like this, and tends to be lucky. Since I got the scanner I wanted, I didn't push the service contract. I've had a WP 7 phone since last year, and love it. Mango will make it even better. It's a vastly underrated platform. Actually, that's not true-people who have actually tried it seem to be pretty happy with it. Unfortunately, few regular (non-IT) folk have a clue about it thanks to crappy marketing on Microsoft's part. But I digress. Thankfully, spending the extra $$$ has paid off well. It scans both sides of a sheet at the same time, discarding empty pages. I did not pay for a service contract on it, my boss and I thought the gamble was worth it. She gambles on things like this, and tends to be lucky. Re: Age Discrimination in IT
Went with a friend during lunch (he is a MS employee) to the ATT store to get some cases for our phones. The sales guy was harping on the iPhone and he was talking smack on Windows in general (vulnerable, etc)[it was a fun conversation for all involved]. I shot back with patching helps and get MSE for AV and he goes MS won't let me update cause of my hacked copy of Windows. I then asked my friend, Hey, don't you get an employee discount? and he said Yes, that would be Microsoft. The look on that poor guys face was priceless. I asked him how it felt to be back in high school. His reply was that he was having flashbacks. I think we ruined his day. It's not just that it's noise... The initial changes between CPUs was a lot more significant than they tend to be today. And the releases were less frequent. And you didn't have 900 web site reviewers stealing them off the back of trucks in order to get you the absolutely first exclusive review. In many ways, the hardware is not quite the differentiator for most use cases as the software. At least not the CPU. It's still run to see changes year to year, though. RE: IT: How to Tell Remotely what Service Pack (Office, and Windows) remote PC is running
Yes, it can be done; but it's a bit more challenging. You have to be able to interrogate the remote system. That requires that either remote management be enabled in the client firewall, or that the remote registry service be enabled and its exception enabled in the client firewall. Regards, Michael B. I have been using Exmon to find the user, Outlook version and Ip address. Todd Lemmiksoo On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 2:31 PM, Michael B. PowerShell would line-for-line match vbscript for the Excel code. Regards, Michael B.
