I ported our land line to Callcentric a few years ago. At the time they were
one of the few carriers that could accept the port from our exchange.

Does voip.mshttp://voip.ms offer other plans than they show on their website?
I can only find that the DID flat rate is $4.95 to $5.95 and outbound is either
$0.0052 or $0.0125/min.

RE: OT: I need a Landline! You read that right.

2011-07-13 Thread Sam Cayze
OP here. Well, just got off the phone with my Sprint Rep. They want $130
for the 'Airwave'/MicroCell and $5/Month to use it, with a 24 month
commitment.

Update on Google Voice, I'm playing around with this more and discovered
it's more powerful than I thought. I've found a way to have a USB Deskphone
ring if my Cell # is dialed, and I can place calls through that phone via
Google Voice (Same number as my Cell). I might play around with that more.

If I can't cut it using that, I'll get the Airware, or utilize some of the
VOIP offering you guys suggested.

Thanks for the tips!

2011-07-13 Thread David Mazzaccaro
I have 3 Airaves. Here are 2 from my monthly bill.. zero monthly cost,
zero commitment.

Do you have a large Sprint account? I have over 100 lines w/ them,
perhaps that helped?

Also - I explained that we would have to switch providers for the
President of the company because of lousy Sprint coverage at their
house... perhaps THAT helped?

I remember it was tricky to get to the right person, my regular sprint
rep had nothing to do with getting me the Airave(s).

There was a separate department that only handled them.

Good luck!

Thanks David, we only have about 30 lines, and I admitted that it was MY
doing that lowered my signal strength. (That's just how I roll.) That
probably didn't help my cause :)

Thanks for the tidbit though, I might ask around at Sprint and see what they
could do. Even at the price they quoted, we can cough that up.

Sam,

Can I ask you a couple of questions about Google Voice? Was it difficult to
setup with the USB phone? Are you using Outlook integration with it?

Reason I ask is someone just asked me to help him with trying to dial from
Outlook 2010 using Google Voice through a USB headset. Trying to do some
research on it and thought you might have some valuable insight.

Thanks,

installed. VOIP/SIP/Digital through Comcast, I’m considering it all. But,
I’m not too well versed on the options avail. I still support an old PBX at
our office, and built a SIP fax service/server, but my telco experience is
pretty limited outside of that. I’d like to avoid Comcast (Personal reasons
and I often cancel it and go through our Municipal WiFi).

 ** **

Any suggestions you guys have off the top of your head? A good service
that sticks out that you would like to plug?

Something that incorporated with Google Voice would be a plus… (Not sure
anything does). I do use the new Sprint/Google Voice offering, so I can
mask the new number with my Sprint number, and I can easily have my Sprint

 Thanks. Open to ideas.

ATT microcell if you have them. Otherwise why not get some sort of
VoIP? I've had Broadvoice for 6 years and it's been very reliable.

Is a microcell a possibility? That way you continue to use your phone,
it just transmits data over your broadband network...

RE: I need a Landline! You read that right.

2011-07-11 Thread Ken Cornetet
ATT microcells are limited. In fact, you must enter the mobile numbers of the
phones allowed to use it (you can have 10 numbers).

I have one and it works very well.

Caveats:

1. If you daisy-chain it (plug it into an Ethernet connection, and plug
a PC into it), it does naughty DHCP things. It caches DHCP information from
the DHCP server, then pretends to be that DHCP server to the PC. Maddening when
you are trying to troubleshoot. Yes, I learned this the hard way.

2. It needs to be close to a window for the GPS to come up. If it can't
see satellites, it doesn't come up. There is an antenna jack, but the docs are
kind of vague on obtaining and using an external GPS antenna.

3. Your phone must be 3G capable.

4.Non ATT GSM phones (Trac, StraightTalk, Net10, etc) won't work on it.

5. Range is very limited

I'm probably going to replace my land-line with skype. Low per minute cost, and
no monthly cost. There are a ton of other VoIP vendors out there with very
reasonable rates.

If you want the full-blown nerd solution, have a look here:

looked you cannot limit who can use it. I think it is a 911 issue..

So...
Thought I'd build a nice new home office in the basement. After layers of new
insulation, soundproofing, and drywall, my cell phone no longer works down
there! Oops :-\

Considering how much I telecommute, I need to get some sort of landline
installed. VOIP/SIP/Digital through Comcast, I'm considering it all. But, I'm
not too well versed on the options avail. I still support an old PBX at our
office, and built a SIP fax service/server, but my telco experience is pretty
limited outside of that. I'd like to avoid Comcast (Personal reasons and I
often cancel it and go through our Municipal WiFi).

Any suggestions you guys have off the top of your head? A good service that
sticks out that you would like to plug?

Something that incorporated with Google Voice would be a plus... (Not sure
anything does). I do use the new Sprint/Google Voice offering, so I can mask
the new number with my Sprint number, and I can easily have my Sprint number
ring the new number too.

Thanks. Open to ideas.

The Airware? Zero cost? Looking it up...

I did kinda like the idea of having an actual hardware phone with
handset and good quality speaker phone. I have a hard time on cell
phone even with a nice headset - especially for long conference calls.

But these are a great suggestion.

 ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security

Re: OT: I need a Landline! You read that right.

2011-07-11 Thread Andrew Laya
Rather than run a business phone line (read expensive) into my wife's
office, she has a VoIP adapter and a regular cordless phone, and uses a
service from acanac.ca. $120 for the year is a whole lot cheaper than what
the local Telco wants for a business line. Not sure what their offerings in
the US are like though.

Andrew.

Is a microcell a possibility? That way you continue to use your phone, it just
transmits data over your broadband network...

I'm using T-Mobile, and they recently added a new feature to their
Androids: Calling over WiFi.

It counts against your minutes (and I don't care, because I have
unlimited calling), but you just set up your machine for the SSIDs
that you have or encounter, and it dials just fine.

I'm just starting to test this today, but at work it Just Worked.

Of course, who knows what's going to happen once they get swallowed by
ATT, but it's a cool feature for now.

Is a microcell a possibility?  That way you continue to use your phone, it
just transmits data over your broadband network...

 So…

Thought I’d build a nice new home office in the basement.  After layers of
new insulation, soundproofing, and drywall, my cell phone no longer works
 down there!  Oops :-\

Considering how much I telecommute, I need to get some sort of landline

Any suggestions you guys have off the top of your head?  A good service that
sticks out that you would like to plug?

Something that incorporated with Google Voice would be a plus… (Not sure
anything does).  I do use the new Sprint/Google Voice offering, so I can
mask the new number with my Sprint number, and I can easily have my Sprint
number ring the new number too.

 Thanks.  Open to ideas.
