Sophos is constantly catching variants of Fake AVs in our environment.
Not saying it catches all of them, but I definitely see it catching a
lot of them.

RE: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-14 Thread Dave Mattingly
Good Afternoon,

We recently changed from eSet NOD32 to Shavlik Netch Protect. It uses
the Sunbelt Vipre AV engine. Solved my patch/AV/Malware issues
(majority) all through one app. I agree with supplementing with Malware
Bytes or another malware scanner just to be safe. I understand GFI is
incorporating the Vipre engine in their upcoming patch management
product release . These sites are pretty good for measuring month to
month performance of the different products. Personally I like

Re: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-14 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
In non-corporate high-exposure environments:

I've come across quite a few new variant malware that weren't being detected
by any AV installed or at my disposal (I typically offline clean with ESET
and Kaspersky, followed-up with Malwarebytes) - but when I uploaded the new
suspect files to Virus Total, the *only* positive response from all the AV
vendors checked came from Sunbelt/Vipre.

So, in these cases, the only *two* products detecting and cleaning the new
malware were Malwarebytes and Sunbelt. Sunbelt being the only *AV* vendor
detecting anywhere near the same malware as Malwarebytes.

Of course, YMMV.

RE: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-12 Thread Alex Eckelberry
We had many talks with Gartner. All I can say is that they didn't seem to
understand that we don't want to add 1,000 endless features to make the
feature checkbox game. We will continue to impress upon them that we never
want to be like anyone else. Gartner does not actually use the products they
evaluate. They watch a Powerpoint presentation by the vendor.

When I went out to design VIPRE with our team, our philosophy was less is
better - in other words, we wanted to design a Porsche, vs. an SUV. In
talking to admins, we found that the biggest headache was performance. Well,
the reality is, you add all kinds of cute toys to your Porsche, it's going to
turn into a pig.

I'm going to be parsimonious with whatever features we add to VIPRE. Gartner
dinged us because we didn't have things like a Wifi mode (whatever that is) and
USB device protection. True, we don't. Personally, I feel that a lot of what
they wanted from the product would be better found elsewhere (much of it for
free through GPO) or through dedicated point products. Nevertheless, we will
continue adding pieces of functionality as it make sense, but I am far more in
favor of continuing to refine what we have. I get much more concerned about
the quality of malware detection, the usability of the console, intrusiveness
of agents, and many other things that are part-and-parcel to what an admin has
to deal with, rather than adding additional features. Believe me, it's enough
just to make sure you have the basics right...

But yes, we could do a better job getting more reviews and more analysts
covering us, and now that GFI owns us, this is starting to happen (because
money really helps).

However I am of the feeling that reactive AV is losing its effectiveness,

Subject: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

We are looking to replace our current AV (McCrappy Total Protection for
Endpoint) with something that is more light weight AND catches all of
the bugs. I was pretty excited about Trend and LANDesk's Kaspersky
engine...until either testing or listening to SE's describe the product.

I would appreciate any and all feedback on the AV vendor you use and if
you recommend them.

RE: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-11 Thread Randal, Phil
Big issue is manageability in a corporate environment.

All products have their quirks. Would be nice to see a good feature matrix
prepared by a non-vendor.

McAfee ain't so crappy anymore with VSE 8.8, though we're getting too many
false positives with Artemis, even at a low sensitivity level.

Sophos is good on detection; it's one of the first to detect the latest round
of DHL email malware being spammed out in great quantities at the moment.

Cheers,

Phil

+1 for Sophos.

I'm a big fan - easy deployment, easy to manage via console, catches a
ton of stuff that Symantec did not and I got great pricing from our

Re: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-11 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
And I've seen the exact opposite, where AV tools including MSE, did not
adequately protect against newer drive-by exploits.

Malwarebytes however blocked the source of the malware completely based on
IP.

YMMV, but I see lots of residentials where Malwarebytes is the difference
between winning or losing.

I would also recommend Vipre as it is very unobtrusive and easy to
configure.

However I am of the feeling that reactive AV is losing its
effectiveness, and that AV combined with good whitelisting is the best
way to try and keep systems clean. And, of course, not giving anyone
admin rights who doesn't need them.

RE: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-11 Thread Paul Hutchings
Yes. We had Trend OfficeScan previously and I felt we were getting too
much sneaking past it.

I looked at several products and Avira came out best for us. It's very
light and these days we virtually never have to run cleanups on PC's
(though to be entirely fair I use good URL filtering so that people
don't get to infected sites to start with). They also release updates
very frequently i.e. hourly most days.

The management console can be a learning curve and IMO is the one thing
that doesn't give a good first impression - stick with it and it works
well though.

I can only suggest try it - I know when I trialled various products
there were a few that I went into thinking this must be good because of
their reputation only for the problems to start manifesting themselves
after a few minutes/hours/days.

RE: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

2011-03-11 Thread pdw1914

We've had Sophos up and running for about 6 weeks now. It does use up more
resources than Vipre, though.

Jim-I have yet to find a way to deploy the agent w/o using the console. With
Vipre it was easy to create an agent and then use that to deploy on a single
machine. Sophos is a bit of a pain (from what I've experienced) on deploying
to one pc.

Big issue is manageability in a corporate environment.

All products have their quirks. Would be nice to see a good feature matrix
prepared by a non-vendor.

McAfee ain’t so crappy anymore with VSE 8.8, though we’re getting too many
false positives with Artemis, even at a low sensitivity level.

Sophos is good on detection; it’s one of the first to detect the latest
round of “DHL” email malware being spammed out in great quantities at the
moment.

Cheers,

Phil

Subject: Antivirus Vendor Replacement

We are looking to replace our current AV (McCrappy Total Protection for
Endpoint) with something that is more light weight AND catches all of the
bugs. I was pretty excited about Trend and LANDesk’s Kaspersky engine…until
either testing or listening to SE’s describe the product.

I would appreciate any and all feedback on the AV vendor you use and if you
recommend them.
