You can check the malware blocking capabilities of any product or service by
going to a place like malwaredomainlist.com.

I don't see them blocking many sites.

You're right, though, in this threat environment, every bit helps.

Even with Enterprise, you can't go to User-level logging. You'd have to
buy a 3rd party product such as GFI's Webmonitor to get user-level.
GFI's product doesn't require ISA any longer, btw...

Right now my dns is set to forward all requests to root servers, no caching and
no zones other than that board.imcu.com zone we set up last week.
Otherwise my forward lookup and reverse lookup zones only have dynamic updates
from internal IP's...
So if I set my three DC's to forward to OpenDNS the users would get all their
internal DNS lan traffic fine and all real Internet traffic would resolve DNS
through OpenDNS??
If I understand everybody ok. The link OpenDNS setup send me too was a link to
MS stating to delete the [.] zone but I don't see one of those on my DC's???

All you need to do to use it successfully is to setup your current DNS server
for Active Directory, to forward to OpenDNS for all remote zones.

Then, your clients will get all internal addresses as they do now, and will go
to OpenDNS rather than your ISP or looking up the addresses via the Root
servers for everything else.

Works like a charm. Been using it at home, work and at our church for over a
year at this point now.

You're correct that your internal LAN traffic will remain the same, and

modify the forwarders to point to the OpenDNS servers - and it works

You probably have private zones which the public DNS cannot see.
AKA split DNS.

Wasn't it just last week I was warning you about that? Wow, karma's
a bitch, eh? I told you so, etc. ;-)

Hopefully you've got one internal nameserver (or set of nameservers)
that is authoritative for all those private zones. Configure all your
internal DNS clients -- including Windows servers which are DNS
clients -- to query through that nameserver. Configure that
nameserver to forward queries to OpenDNS.

If you've got multiple caching resolvers in your network, configure
them for selective forwarding (available in Win 2003 or later) to
forward the private zones to the internal nameservers, and everything
else to OpenDNS.

Is the IP address properly configured? OpenDNS needs the external IP of
your network. If you have a dynamic IP you'll need to use the updater
utility.

Also, remove any other external DNS pointers or you'll still be able to
hit those sites.

I usually just test by trying to hit www. Playboy.com. If it's blocked
you're good to go.

I just used my external IP address for both networks I’ve configured with
OpenDNS. Selecting the Adult category blocks those sites just fine.

Are you getting any filtering at all? Does your edge device forward to
another DNS server perhaps?

Hello all…

I’ve just changed to OpenDNS yesterday. However I’m having a heck of a time
getting the adult site blocking to work. I’ve followed all the instructions
and guides from the forums and knowledge base but still no joy. Has anyone
had this problem and know a solution?

I’ve sent email to tech support but that was yesterday and still no
response.

Thanks in advance for a any tips/advice.

My external IP of my firewall is registered with them and I have my
Content Filtering setting in the OpenDNS dashboard set to low. I've set
the forwarders on all my internal DNS boxes and in my firewall to their
IP addys. Even when I specify a porn site to block like pictureview.com
it lets it through. I figure I'm doing something wrong but I can't
find an error. And playboy.com comes through too.

Try the Custom filtering option and select the specific categories you
need to block.

I don't recall it taking more than an hour to see the results, but it a
few months ago. OpenDNS is gaining popularity so may be slowing down.

  My
external IP of my firewall is registered with them and I have
my Content Filtering setting in the OpenDNS dashboard set to low.
Ive set the forwarders on all my internal DNS boxes and in my firewall
to their IP addys. Even when I specify a porn site to block like
pictureview.com it lets it through. I figure Im doing
something wrong but I cant find an error. And playboy.com comes
through
too.

  Are
you getting any filtering at all? Does your edge

Re: OpenDNS?

Same here, and it (filtering) works great. If you do it right, you
can also cut down/out a lot of web page advertising.

I'm also using it as a forwarding service at work, and my average DNS
query times were cut by a third. Yay global cache!

I use it at my call center in my DNS forwarders. I am not sure whose
proxy avoidance list is more accurate between OpenDNS and Websense, but
using them both I think is better than just one.

I have found it to be very responsive as well and don't mind the ad
pages on mis-typed / unavailable web sites.
