[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Yes

2009-11-28 Thread Shawn Matthew Billerman
Hi all,

My mom and I were able to relocate the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE this afternoon
between 2 and 3 this afternoon at the Kings Park High School, where it was
with roughly 200 Canada Geese.

We were unable to locate either the Cackling or Barnacle Goose in this
flock, and although we did not check Sunken Meadow State Park, we were
told by another birder that neither goose was there either.

It was interesting to note that the Pink-footed Goose was vocalizing a lot
this afternoon. Has anyone else noticed this?

Good birding,
Shawn Billerman

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose update

2011-11-18 Thread Curt McDermott

dHi All,
I wanted to update the status of the PfG for anyone considering
searching for it this weekend. To my knowledge, the bird was last seen on
Wednesday morning by Rob Bate and Rich Fried.
It is very possible that this bird is still around and has just not been
relocated yet. There are many local farms and fields in which the bird can
hide. When searching for the Goose, Stage Rd. (GPS will have it in either
Goshen, Middletown or Mechanicstown) off of Goshen Tpk. is another good place
to look as it often holds hundreds to thousands of geese. Milo Rd. off of
Airport rd.(Middletown/Mechanicstown) is another spot that had hundreds of
Canada Geese on wednesday as well as a juvenile White-fronted Goose found by
Jeff Goulding. The fields near the Orange County Fairgrounds as well as those
on the property of Middletown High School are other areas that could hold
geese. Lastly, the 6 1/2 Station Rd. Wildlife Sanctuary (located on 6 1/2
Station Rd. in Goshen, NY for those not familiar) is just over the hill from
the original spot where the bird was found.
Good luck if you go and please continue to post strike outs or success in
finding this bird.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose Update

2012-02-22 Thread Derek Rogers
As of 7:40 AM, the Pink-footed Goose was NOT present in the Holtsville soccer
field.

I decided I'd try for it in my way into work. When I arrived, Rob Bate and Rich
Fried were already on the scene working there way through a small flock of
Canada Geese.

Hopefully more recon and routine site checks will turn up the goose. There were
several groups landing in the field last night.

Last night, the Pink-footed Goose seemed to be on high alert of my presence and
would shy away with the sub group in which it was foraging. I kept a good
distance and recommend the same for any potential future viewing opportunities.

Good luck if you go,

Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose photos

2012-02-22 Thread Luke Ormand
I was able to get a few decent photos of the Pink-footed Goose in
Holtsville this evening. If you go and are interested in getting a little
closer for photography without making all of the birds fly and walk away
there's a fence that runs along the eastern sides of the field and for the
most part you can walk on the opposite side of the fence which allowed me
to get within 100 yards of the bird (instead of the 300 yards I was at when
viewing from the road). Photos can be seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose-NO

2012-02-23 Thread pjlindsay
I spent an hour shuttling between the Medford Athletic Park and the
Holtsville field (Suffolk Co.) this morning (7:00-8:00 AM) as geese
continued to fly in from the south and east, but the Pink-footed Goose
was not among the 120 or so Canadas at Holtsville or the 40 or so at
Medford. I tried last evening as well but by the time I got free of the
rush hour traffic (5:50 PM) I only had enough light to check the
Holtsville location, where I found a guy with a dog and a
radio-controlled monster car on the field and, naturally, no geese.

I would appreciate any updates, negative or positive, as I'd like to try
again when I get the opportunity.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose—NO

2012-02-23 Thread jgluth
I too tried for the Pink-footed Goose without success. I searched for ~1 hour
(~9:45 - ~10:40), starting at the Medford Athletic complex followed by the
Holtsville soccer field, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, and Sachem High School. The
only geese I saw were 45-50 Canadas at the Medfordcomplex and another 5 flying
over Fairmont Road as I drove north from Horeseblock Rd. to Granny Road.
Despite a lack of birds this morning, the ball fields at the High School look
like a particularly promising spot to check for the PFGO if it'snot at either
of the sites it was previously seen.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - No!

2013-03-05 Thread Bill Purcell
No luck finding the Pink-footed Goose at the Camel Farm in Orange County on
Monday or Tuesday. I was there three times both days between 11 AM and 3:15 PM
(afterwards the sun is in your eyes on clear days). Lots of geese to sort
through but they all had black necks and white cheek patches. A visit this
morning at 10:25 AM was too early since were only about 40 geese present. I
spent the intervals on Oil City Road where there also lots of geese, all
Canadas, and I found very few geese in surrounding areas.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Orange County

2017-02-07 Thread Richard Guthrie
Ken McDermott called minutes ago to report that he is seeing the previously
reported Pink-footed Goose with a small group of Canada Geese in a horse
corral at 712 Sandhill Road near Warwick, NY.

The road, though lightly traveled, is narrow at that site is at a curve
limiting sight line distance for oncoming vehicle traffic. So appropriate
caution is advised.

of Canada Geese on the grass at Orange County Trust bank on the corner
of Schutt Rd Ext and Dunning Rd in Middletown. My husband Lee raced
home to get his camera (We don't have cell phones so no camera with
us.), but the birds were gone when we returned. We've been driving
all around the area looking for them to no avail. The goose is
smaller than a Canada. Its bill is short with black at the base and
tip with pink in the middle. It has very pink legs. We couldn't see
the feet in the grass. The body is light brownish with the head a bit
darker. Eyes are dark. White under tail coverts. White edge on
wing. We've seen these in England. They differ from White-fronted
which has orange legs, all pink bill (Juveniles can have a black
tip.), and white on forehead and behind bill."

Kevin McGann and I went to Middletown to see if the Pink-footed Goose was still

find were on the pond visible from the foot trail off 6 & 1/2 Road.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Queens County...

2012-01-25 Thread Andrew Baksh
Late this afternoon while out looking for Cackling Goose in Queens, I found
a Pink-footed Goose. The location may not be very familiar to many, so I
have tried to map it out and posted additional information on my blog. See
here http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/

Good luck if you go and please be mindful that the location is not ideal
for high traffic along the edges, so please enjoy your views without
trampling the vegetation. Other birds of note in the area include, Palm
Warbler and Wilson's Snipe.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Holtsville, Suffolk

2012-02-21 Thread Derek Rogers
At 4:45 PM I observed a Pink-footed Goose foraging in a large soccer field in
Holtsville.

The field is located along the North service road of the Long Island
Expressway, just west of Blue Point Road. You can't miss it.

The goose was still present at 5:30 PM when I left the site. It was among
approximately 500 Canada Geese.

I managed some decent digiscope photos and got some video footage as well. I
will post the photos in my Flickr page later this evening and will share.

Hopefully this field is part of the birds daily foraging pattern. What drew my
attention was not only the number of geese present in the field but also the
groups I observed landing in as a drove past the field heading west on the
expressway. This prompted my interest in turning around for a closer look. I'm
glad I did!

Greetings All,
The bird is indeed being seen near 712 Sandhill Road but this location is in Ulster County, east of SGNWR as the goose flies. Many thanks again to Bruce Nott for discovering this county first yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose in Nassau County

2018-12-17 Thread Gus Keri
Hi everyone,

Apparently, there is a confusion about the name of the pond where the goose is
at. The first report said it's Lake Success. But if you put Lake Success in
Google map, you get a lake that is north of the Northern State Parkway (NSP).
The goose is at the pond that is south of the NSP. In the middle of the
triangle that is made by NST, Marcus Ave and New Hyde Park Rd. (exit 25 on NSP
toward Marcus Ave.)
I couldn't find the name of this pond anywhere.
Any time you click on one of the four water bodies in Lake Success Village, you
see the words "Lake Success" pop up.

The confusion continues with reporting this bird to eBird. You see all kind of
names for this location.
I hope someone who lives in the area could clarify to us the proper name.
And I think eBird should assign a hot spot name for this location.

I spent two hours today until the goose decided to wake up and swim around.
Enjoy this video of the Pink-footed Goose:

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose -- thoughts on finding

2009-11-09 Thread Christopher Wood
Hi All,

Tom Johnson, Carolyn Sedgwick, Jessie Barry and I spent the better
part of the day enjoying the Canada Geese, gulls, flyover passerines
and traffic at Sunken Meadow State Park. Despite spending much of the
day there, we did not see the geese until 3:02PM.

Tom Johnson first saw the Pink-footed in flight with ca. 200 Canada
Geese and the Barnacle Goose at 3:02PM. We were waiting specifically
for the bird since Tate saw the bird come in around 3:10 the day
before. It quickly landed in the marsh out of view (just as Tate
reported previously). We headed to the intersection that is just north
of the bridge over the creek, walked about 100 meters west, entered
the woods and walked to the edge of the reeds. We were able to find an
area where we were eventually able to get very good views, distant
photographs and some surprisingly adequate video (See
http://flickr.com/pinicola). We only briefly saw the Barnacle Goose
from here.

I suspect that others will have the best luck if they either arrive
very early in the morning and look for the birds as they depart,
orarrive around 2:30PM and wait for the birds to fly into the marsh.
Birds often develop a routine and based on Tate's report and our
experience that you will have the best luck around 3:00. The best area
to wait may be just up the hill (south) from the bridge.

We did spent time driving around many golf courses, baseball diamonds
and parks but didn't run into the geese. I suspect with a bit more
effort, others will find where these birds are feeding when they
aren't at Sunken Meadows.

Best wishes,
Chris

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Friday, Dec. 4

2009-12-06 Thread Shawn Matthew Billerman
Hi all,

I received an email this morning from Chris Feeney who was birding New
Jersey and Long Island this past week. He wanted me to post that he found
the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE at Sunken Meadow State Park on Friday, December 4.
Chris saw the bird about 2:30 pm in the field to the left of the main
admin building.

Good luck to all those who try for the bird. Hopefully it will stick
around for the Christmas counts.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Pennellville (Oswego County)

2013-03-18 Thread tigger64
Though it was not the first goose flock I looked through today, it was the
first goose I put binoculars on in that particular flock. Originally found on
CR-264 just north of the CR-54 intersection in Pennellville, the geese took
flight after other birders arrived but was found close by on CR-54, then behind
the Pennellville Post Office, then in a knee-high corn field on CR-10. Good
coordination and communication by birders led to most getting to see the bird.

The bird has bubble-gum pink legs that were conspicuous among Canada Geese, and
a small, mostly black bill with small pink area (none of my photos managed to
capture the bill well). The bird has an interesting tail pattern and is
overall noticeably paler when flying with Canada Geese.

The loop formed by CR-264, CR-54, Peter Scott Swamp Rd, Godfrey Rd, and
Biddlecum Rd is recommended for future searching.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Riverhead (Suffolk)

2014-11-09 Thread Derek Rogers
The Pink-footed Goose remained in the company of roughly 500 Canada Geese when
I left the site around 3:45. It was some of the better views I've gotten of
this species with good light and relative close range. The goose called several
times during the hour in which I viewed it and occasionally snapped back at the
bullying Canada Geese.

Seems early for Pink-foot but I'm reminded that geese have been on the move for
a while now. Back on 10/19/14 I noted 2 collared Canada Geese from the West
Greenland program, indicating that geese from the far north have decided to
move early this year. Also, reports from the UK indicate record breaking
numbers during this fall's Pink-foot migration. Perhaps an early sign of more
to come as their population continues to increase. Here is a link to a BBC News
report from Montrose Basin that gives an idea on some of the numbers they are
seeing: http://m.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-29691238

Some images of today's goose can be viewed on my Flickr page:

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose, Bronx Co. 12/22

2016-12-22 Thread Thomas Fiore

Thursday, 22 December, 2016 - Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx (N.Y. City)

On the Parade Grounds field adjacent to Broadway, north of about West
246 Street, I found a Pink-footed Goose, in amongst well over 1,000
Canada Geese, very late this afternoon - many photos were taken, from
a distance!

The goose flock here is shy, and can be spooked if approached too
quickly or too closely; if you go seeking this Pink-footed, please
keep a respectful distance (if any geese start to move off at your
approach, it means you are getting too close for them); when seen,
around 3:15 thru just past 4 pm, the Pink-footed was mostly nearer the
south part of the big goose-flock, and even though it moved more into
the center of the very extensive field, this was in keeping with
general "drift" of the Canadas, as they all fed & milled about, a very
few also resting on the grass.

These geese may (or may not) roost on the Van Cortlandt lake
overnight, and may come to feed on the Parade Ground at some point in
the morning (which may or may not be very early, based on some past
goose observations at this site). There was also a Snow Goose
present that went off to the east (perhaps to the Van Cortlandt lake),
& that then came back later.

I did not give full attention to all of this 1,000+ flock of geese,
and it is possible other species (such as Cackling or even some
other), may have been present; once the Pink-footed was suspected,
most focus was on that for this late afternoon. Andrew Baksh and many
other birders will be out counting (including this area) on Monday,
12/26, for the Bronx-Westchester CBC which is compiled by Michael
Bochnik.

Good luck if you try, and please, please, give the geese enough space
to feed & not flush due to any birder's actions, thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose in Malone (Franklin Co.)

2017-11-09 Thread Joan Collins
I am posting on behalf of Hollis White (he is having trouble posting to the
list). Hollis and Denise White found a Pink-footed Goose at the Malone
Recreational Park yesterday (Wed. Nov. 8, 2017) among the hordes of Snow
Geese (a major birding attraction at this location in Nov.!). Hollis plans
to be at the park again today. This appears to be a first record for this
species in Franklin County.

I heard about this sighting from Willie D'Anna (thanks Willie!) this
morning. (Hollis sent a photo of the goose to a friend in Canada, who
forwarded it to Willie and he identified the goose.) I called Hollis this
morning to confirm the location and he asked me to post on his behalf.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Coxsackie, The Greene County

2017-12-06 Thread Richard Guthrie
At around 4 o'clock this evening, while manning my station for the Winter
Raptor Survey at the Coxsackie Flats I scanned through a large group (1,200
- 1,500 birds) of Canada Geese in a harvested cornfield on a short dead-end
road: Barrus Road - which begins at the southern end of Bronk (same family
as The Bronx) Mill Road and Old Plank Road (County Rt 9).

I spotted a mid-sized uniformly dark sooty-brown goose with a pale
horizontal stripe along the flanks and silvery edges to the folded wing
feathers. It had no white features on the head or neck and a smallish dark
bill - a Pink-footed Goose.

The goose was about 360 ft. (110m) to the east of the road, actively
feeding on scattered corn cobs along with the Canada Geese and one Cackling
Goose. I watched it for about 15-20 minutes, easily picking it out again
anytime after I had lost track of.

There is a small group of mobile homes along a short spur off Barrus Road
and two other houses along the road. The house directly across (west) from
the cornfield has a high fence around it, presumably to keep the two large
dogs in. The dogs are very noisy if anyone is walking along the road but
otherwise very friendly (at least when the homeowner is present). When I've
met the homeowner in the past, I've found him to be very friendly and
interested in my bird work that I've been doing. But those dogs

I remained in my car as I was observing the geese since the nearest Canada
Geese were very agitated. I was afraid that if I got out the whole bunch
would lift off taking the Pink-footed Goose along with them. Because of
roadside shrubbery, I could not get a clear photo of the goose. All the
geese were still there when I went up the road to turn around and leave.

I suspect that the geese come into that cornfield to feed and roost for the
night. I don't know for sure, but I believe they all go over to the nearby
correctional facility grounds where there are some - restricted access -
fields and ponds. A large group of geese flew in at around 4 o'clock. I
can't say whether the Pink-footed Goose was already in the field by then or
if it came in with that bunch.

In winters past, large groups of Canada Geese would first go from the
correctional complex fields down to the Hudson River at the Coxsackie Boat
Launch Park to hang out for a while before going to their night roost. This
has not been happening this season so far, perhaps because hunting season
is still open.

Bottom Line: I suspect that it will be difficult to see this goose, if it
does return to that field, unless you stay in your car and hope that none
of the few neighbors inadvertently disturbs the larger flock of Canada
Geese. But I also believe that if everyone stays in their cars, all will be
good. Let's just hope that the Pink-footed Goose returns.

In fairness, I don’t think that body of water has a name.
I seem to recall that it’s more like a sump (rather unnaturally rectangular)

The original report by Steve Schellenger was referring to Lake Success the
village in the town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, not a lake. It's a
well-known area to those of us who grew up in Queens and Long Island.

*A Pink-footed Goose was found late Sunday 12/16/18 at 4pm on the Queens
County CBC on Marcus Ave. in Lake Success. It was on the ball field on the
north side of the street between Lakeville Rd. and New Hyde Park Rd. with a
flock of Canada Geese. This is in Nassau County.*

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose Suffolk County Long Island

2009-11-04 Thread Jerry Lazarczyk
Hi Angus,

I will be leaving directly for the Pink Footed Goose which I just saw in Maine
as a Lifer this past week. Please call 716-548-0798 if there are any updates as
I will be on the road. Are the Western Kingbirds still around?

Thanks,

Jerry Lazarczyk
Grand Island NY

Exciting news!

For what it's worth, the 3 Pink-feet in Cumberland, Maine were still
present this morning, so this clearly a different (fourth) bird.

Good photos of the bill might help us to determine if this is a
returning bird or not. Also, I encourage folks to post updates on the
bird, positive or negative, if able to visit the area in the next few
days.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - NO; South Shore Birding

2009-11-25 Thread birddan

This evening from 3:20 to dusk Samantha Holschbach and I searched without
success for the Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow State Park.  We found a
flock of 65 Canadas on the edge of a closed parking lot; that was it for goose
activity.  It seems we've missed this bird by one day.  No Accipiters seen
either.

Earlier we birded the south shore of Long Island from Point Lookout to Robert
Moses State Park.  No unusual species, but plenty of opportunities to study all
three scoters, Common Eiders, Common & Red-throated Loons, Long-tailed Ducks,
Red-breasted Mergansers, Northern Gannets, Ruddy Turnstones, Dunlin, American
Oystercatchers, and Black-bellied Plovers.

2009-11-28 Thread birddan

Samantha Holschbach and I saw the PINK-FOOTED GOOSE at the Kings Park High
School baseball field at 10:30 AM.  It was in a flock of about 120 Canadas.

For over an hour before that we searched Sunken Meadow State Park but did not
see a Cackling Goose among the 130 or so Canadas.  Most of the Canadas were
feeding on the grass bordering the closed parking lot to the east of the park
office.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Merritt's Pond - Yes

2014-03-08 Thread robert adamo
Ben Cacace's posting of yesterday's NYC Area RBA Report was enough for me
to not start painting our kitchen set, which I sanded yesterday, while ?
found the above ! Once there, (~1015) it didn't take long to find the
Pink-footed, which was on the far side (looking from between the 1st & 2nd
houses on Peninsula Path). New species for me at this location ( since
Thursday) were a single Pied-billed Grebe, and a pair of Pintails. The male
C. Merganser was still there, but I couldn't re-find the hybrid goose.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose - Riverhead Yes 3/9

2014-03-09 Thread Barbara
One of the Pink-footed Geese is currently in the field on the north side of
Reeve's Ave, just east of Roanoke Ave, in a flock of about 750 Canadas. Quite
a bit of heat distortion.

A single Greater White-fronted Goose and a Cackling Goose were seen in the
southernmost field on the east side of Roanoke Ave earlier.

Best of luck to those who try.

Plumb Beach in Brooklyn also continues to host a pair of Nelson's Sparrows,

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Fort Tilden (not chaseable)

2022-10-27 Thread Steve Walter
Among the migration activity today at Fort Tilden, Queens were some very
high migrating Canada Goose flocks. Looking at one small group, I noticed
one that seemed out of whack. I managed to get some pictures that I could
blow up . To me, it looks like a Pink-footed Goose. A picture can be seen on
the e-bird page https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S121416069 . If I'm
wrong, you can correct me.

Some of the other notable results for those that like diurnal migration were
6970 Red-winged Blackbirds and 142 Purple Finches. Also a very few Pine
Siskins and the first of the season Eastern Bluebirds. It may not be well
known that the latter annually migrate through the western end of Long
Island along the shore.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose and Snow Goose - Van Cortlandt

2016-12-28 Thread Jesse Sargent
The Pink-footed Goose continues with one Snow Goose at Van Cortlandt Park.

Upon first arriving at the Parade ground a small dog flushed up the flock
making them vacate the field. After tracking the group I found that all of
the geese have found refuge in the baseball field next to the Stadium.

The flock seems content since the field is fenced off from joggers and
unleashed dogs.

Good Birding,
Jesse Sargent

2009-11-03 Thread Angus Wilson
Exciting news!

For what it's worth, the 3 Pink-feet in Cumberland, Maine were still
present this morning, so this clearly a different (fourth) bird.

Good photos of the bill might help us to determine if this is a
returning bird or not. Also, I encourage folks to post updates on the
bird, positive or negative, if able to visit the area in the next few
days.

[nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose etc., Riverhead and Shinnecick (Suffolk)

2014-02-23 Thread d Futuyma
In late morning, 2 immature Iceland Gulls on beach at Road L, along Dune Road
west of Ponquogue Bridge, and 3 at Shinnecock, just west of inlet; also 3 Snowy
Owls seen from road, one on the large sandbar north and slightly west of the
Inlet. I then searched at length for the Pink-footed Goose , finally
encountering Dave Klauber and Bobby Rossetti, who were looking at it in a flock
of Canadas along Roanoke Avenue north of Joyce Drive -- where there had been no
geese an hour earlier. Soon after, we descried a Cackling Goose among the
Canadas.
