On the fuel filter, I've run an inline filter for the past several years
mounted on the frame just a few inches from the tank cutoff valve.  Easy to
change out when needed.

I just cut the line and spliced with rubber gas line hose with hose clamps on
each end.  Then just went and got a clear plastic gas filter from the FLAPS.
I can get a number off of it tomorrow but it's just a medium size clear filter.

[old-chevy-truck] Truck Noise

2013-09-22 Thread Ken Cluley
Hi All

I think I posted something on this a few months ago.  I continue to have a
noise that I believe is coming from the lower part of my engine - maybe in the
oil pan area.  The noise is a rattle or bang that is pretty noisy when I first
start the engine but decreases as I rev the engine but then returns at idle.  I
have a 1954 full pressure 235.  The oil pressure remains normal even when
driving the truck and the temp is ok.  Can an oil pump make this sort of noise?
The engine was completely rebuilt about 2000 miles ago by a top notch
mechanic.  I've added a link to a youtube video so that everyone can listen to
the noise.  You'll hear a slight pinging but it's the banging noise that has me
concerned.  Here's the link:  http://youtu.be/irrv-cUrsV4

2013-09-02 Thread Ken Cluley
Years ago when restoring my '50 truck, I bought the basic wiring harness from
Chevy Duty (now Classic Chevy Truck Parts of America).  It was $99 and it
worked perfectly.   Extremely easy installation with labeled wires, schematic,
etc.  Been driving the truck for the past 8 years with no issues what so ever.
It's not cloth insulated like original (this one is plastic insulation) so if
you're a true purist it might not work for you, but it's a nice harness.

I'm going to lean with the guys that say keep it original.  There are a few
things that you can do to make it more drivable while still maintaining the
originality of the truck.  Put radial tires on it - far improves the ride.
Consider changing the rear end gear ratio to something along the lines of
3:55-1 for ease of highway driving.  You might even go so far as converting to
front disk brakes.  Otherwise, keep 'er stock!!

I have a 54 Chevy 3 window. nbsp; The original owner was a Texas farmer who
kept it for 40 years with no major changes to the truck - it is well worn but
very original. I bought it 20 years ago and stored it until my retirement a few

to 1) keep it as close to original as possible (for example 6 volt electric),
2) do a modest upgrade (for example 12 volt/ add a radio/change door locks/etc)
or 3) really goose it up (for example, go V8 short block/stick on the floor/
lots of chrome/etc.nbsp; My goal for the truck is to have a great looking and
reliable daily driver that I can leave to my son someday. nbsp;I might drive
it in the local fourth of July parade but it won't be entered into a Concours
d'elegance competition. I am neither a collector nor car restoration enthusiast

Agreed. This looks darker than the Hirsch paint, which is too dark.
I was told by an old timer that there was some variation in the gray that
was applied at the different factories, and while the darker can be
acceptable, many Chevy strict constructionists might not agree.

First formost :

Look inside the radiator to see if there's crud built up around the tubes ~ if
so , you'll need to flush the cooling system and prolly do a Citric Acid
cleaning too .

Maybe replace the thermostat . at the very least , always drill a small hole in
the flange of the thermostat so it cannot airlock .

Only use distilled water with your coolant mix , I recommend a 40 % coolant and
60 % distilled water mix , mix it outside the  vehicle then add it .

overheating also means it's time for  another valve adjust .

Had the truck out today.  Runs great BUT! I Heard a noise . . . turns out it
was over heating.  I was just a couple blocks from home.
I'm letting it cool down in the drivway and will check the coolant. The
gauge stayed below 200 degrees, but I know better than to trust it.

Anything I should be aware of as I check the radiator and coolant?

Drove it to work today.  No problem (other than slow start, I'll work on that
on Sunday).
No heating issue.
Will do a flush ASAP

It's not newly rebuilt.  It has maybe 500 miles on it in the last 20 years,
before that I don't know.
How do I check if it is a Ring or bearing clearance issue?  How do i check the
Bore sizing?

Sounds like engine is tight.  Is this engine newly rebuilt?  How many miles on
it?  Is it bored oversize? Rings or bearings may not have been correct
clearance if bored or crank turned.

Hope everyone has a great 2013 truckin'..

It has a key start, no foot pedal.
It takes a long time to get it to start.  Yesterday I turned the fan by hand
to try to the starter.  My thinking was it had a bad spot in it.  That came
from somewhere deep in memory and could have been nonsence to do.
 It did start though.
The starter turns very slow when hot or I should say that's what it sounds
like.  I will test it this weekend and watch.  I am reasonably sure that it
is not turning when Hot at the same speed when cold.
When I first got the truck the battery cables and Negative pole were the
first thing Nate checked when he came over.  I will make sure they are clean,
 tight, and making good contact.

I assume your ’50 still has a “stomp starter”.

First you need to define “a bear to start”.

When hot and trying to start, does the starter turn the engine over very
 slowly?
Does the starter turn the engine over at a “normal” rate, but the engine just
 doesn’t start?

You do have decent sized battery cables ( 00 gauge, both of them ) and the
negative cable is attached to the engine block, preferably at one of the
 starter mounting bolts, I assume.

So, I added fluid to the radiator (It was very low).  Stared the truck.  let
the fluid flow and added as needed.  I let it run for a 40 minutes and no
problem.  Temp gauge would rise a little and then drop.  I think I'm okay
with all that, but will flush the whole system this weekend just in case.

Now, here is the next issue.  When I run the truck for a while and it if good
a warmed up, I'll stop for a few minutes and when  get back in, the truck is
 a bear to start.

So, what causes hard starting when truck is warm/hot?

On Jan. 5, 1951, Virgil, of rural Oklahoma, took title to a brand new 3600,
ser.#5JRL1940, engine #AJCA106104, for a dealer price of $1,501.45.  This
information was on the original title, which was signed over to this Kansas boy
at Virgil's estate auction on April 22, 2010. Virgil farmed, and being a man
who lived through the worst of the dustbowl, took care of his stuff.  His
pickup was in the barn every night. He serviced the engine, which runs as
smooth today as the day he drove it home.  The original wood is still in the
bed, in excellent condition.  Glove box, headliner, gauges, spare tire carrier,
heater, sheet metalall there because Virgil took care of it. The leather
tool pouch was probably sold in a box of miscellaneous stuff because I didn't
know they existed. I guess I'm feeling a bit nostalgic tonight because this
3600 is just on the verge of turning over the 100,000 mile mark.  1600 miles
per year average. It probably never went
much further than the 10 miles to Alva to unload some wheat or bring home some
parts. I'm guessing it spent a lot of time in granny gear, running along side a
combine as it unloaded wheat into the bed. I was born March 1, 1951, and I hope
I'm in as good of shape, even though I know that my new truck will likely
outlive me. So after a couple of years of tinkering, reading, and learning so
much about this great series, I have also learned to appreciate how much
knowledge is out there on this forum, and for how you so willingly share it.
This spring, I will start the process of completely disassembling it, making
each part look new, and putting it back together. I hope all of you can endure
my many questions.  I assure you I am grateful.

You can easily engage the starter on the engine side of the firewall with a
long screwdriver or pry bar to leverage the linkage from the floor button to
the starter.  Then you're right at the engine so see all the good stuff

Thanks so much for all the help!

I just found a 12 volt tester in my tool kit. Guess I'll need to go out and buy
a 6 volt one.

Now, one question. I'm doing all this by myself. The Truck has a push starter,
and it's hard to sit stomping on the starter and tweak the engine at the same
time.

I guess I could do a dead-man's setup, pushing the starter down with a block of
wood, then hooking up and unhooking the battery to get things running. That
would enable me to get things rumbling, jump to the engine compartment, then
jump back to the battery.

I appreciate all of you help me climb my learning curve. It's  steep one, as
you can guess.

If nothing lines up on the bed end , reverse the bracket 180° try it again .

[old-chevy-truck] Parts

Welcome Jerry

You'll find the folks on this site are not only very knowledgeable but always
willing to help.  I went through about a three year restoration on my old chevy

guys.  The fact that this is a project with your son is even more exciting!
Please post some pics on the group photo link so we can see what you're working
with.  I will tell you that if you have vent windows it's probably post 1950.
You may also want to visit www.stovebolt.com.  Great site for tech tips,

I'm new to this site and am getting ready to begin work on an old GMC flatbed
truck that I found out in a neighbor's cow pasture.  I believe it to be a 1/2
ton truck, but not sure.  Since the ID plate is missing, I haven't been able to
accurately identify just what I have.  It has vent windows in the doors, short
running boards, in-line six engine, with three on the tree shifter.  I've found
an original flatbed for it and also an original GMC in-line six engine that
runs and has a 4-speed transmission attached.  Everything is now just waiting
on me and my son to start turning wrenches.  Just thought I would say, Hello,
and see if anyone knows where any stamped VIN numbers are on the frame, so I
can determine just what I have.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Cale,
I don't know about dampening the cardboard...I would be afraid of it getting
messed up but it sounds like a good idea. However, I didn't dampen mine. What I
did do was this.
First, I put the rear metal strip in place but with just a few screws and
turned the screws in only far enough to hold it. Then I made sure the metal bow
was open enough on both sides to slip over the cardboard. I put the bow on the
rear piece and clamped it on the cardboard. Next, I sat on the seat withthe
cardboard on my lap then raised it over my head and pushed it into the rear
metal strip. I checked for fit and tucked things in on the sides. Finally, I
pushed the front piece into the bow and fit it in the front, tucking things in.
It wasn't as easy as it sounds but it wasn't really hard, either.
One other bit of advice. Don't do this on the hottest, most humid day of a
Tidewater Virginia summer without a trace of a breeze blowing like I did.

I'm to the point in my headliner project that I'm ready to start thinking about
the install of the headliner and re placement of the rubber around the door
openings in the cab. So far I've stripped out the rock hard door rubber and
removed the old headliner, prepped and sealed the roof with rust encapsulator
and installed heat/sound insulation on the roof. I just need to install the
replacement headliner and window lace, which I already ordered from classic
parts. I've been reading up on install advice on the stovebolt site and
previous posts here. Anyone have any advice on installing the headliner?
(besides using a windshield install tool and dampening the cardboard to make it
more flexable) I've heard headliner installs can be trying. Any any advice on
installing the new door rubber into the channel on the cab? I thought at first
I would try to slide it though the length of the channel because it seems to be
too wide, but it won't go in easily, so I
think I am going to get it into place and try to jam it in. Any special tools
for this job? Any help appreciated...I'll let you know how it turns out.

James, thanks for the generous offer. If I was a 100 miles away, I'd be
knockin' on your door this morning, but I am in extreme SE  corner of AZ.
Got lots of good responses to my question. My plan is to jack the tranny up
slightly, block it, and separate the engine and pull it out. I have removed
passenger side front fender, inner fender, radiator and support frame and all
the other stuff that hangs on the engine. The hood will come off this weekend
when my son can help---then the fun starts.
Thanks a bunch for your offer and advice.

I got in on this thread late.  Sounds to me like the engine is toast.  I am
still in Northwest MO and I have a 235 block out of a 54 engine I'd give you
just to make space if you were nearby enough to make it practical.  I've pulled
a few engines and it takes more time but fewer valium and tylenol to first
remove the transmission and then the engine, unless you have the cab off, too.
The hood usually has tocome off as well as the radiator and the radiator
support.  I have seen removals where the radiator support top piece was cut,
but I don't like to do it that way.

Rick, Ken and Bill, Thanks for your input. Your advice is exactly what I wanted
to hear. I think I misunderstood my friend when he said to pull the whole thing
as a unit.
Got another question for you all. CYLINDER RE-BORING.
Cyl. #4 is in bad shape. Looks like maybe a broken ring pretty well scored it
up. Thought maybe I could have the engine rebored, but after cleaning up the
top of the pistons, I see .060 stamped on the top. That means it has already
been re-bored? And what is the liklilhood that I can have it bored another 20
or so?
Not looking good.
As always thanks for your input.

2011-09-06 Thread Ken Cluley
Well, I pulled my 235 (twice - long story) with 3 speed tranny attached.  Of
course, I had removed the hood.  The clearance was adequate but we had to do a
little fishing of the units as they were being raised and lowered to keep
from banging into stuff.

I would not do it that way. I am very cautious and like taking things out in
pieces; tranny out the bottom, engine out the top.

Seems like an engine with a trans hanging out the back is a long thing, and
they'd be heavy (heavier) together.

Some vehicles like the MG Midget do it that way but then you have to allow
for vertical clearance as you're going up and out.

In the files section of the group page there is a wiring diagram for a 1950

should be able to print the wiring diagram and follow the numbers to hook up
the rest of your stuff.

I bought a partially finished 3/4ton with a new wiring harness that is partly
hooked up.  Trouble is I got NO instructions with the truck and cant find any
directions in the boxes of parts that came with it.   The guy who sold it to me
is not the same guy who bought the harness and did the work.

There is enough of it hooked up to start the engine and operate the charging
system but I have lots of extra wires hanging down from the dash-maybe turn
signals or may they are the tail lights.  Not sure where the dome light and gas
gauge wires are.  The hanging wires are labeled with numbers-- in the
30's--like 31, 32, 33, etc.

The folks at Classic Parts were nice enough to send me instruction for their
wiring kit but it does not match.

Does anyone have instructions for another brand of wiring kit to share that
might accidentally match what I have?

Thanks,

Steve

wow. i just got off the phone with classic parts (aka chevy duty).
they have a smoking deal on 55-59 speedo for $99.
i called, it's in stock. woohoo.

i ordered it on line thru their website last thurs
and they offer same day shipping...
no email, no thanks, no we shipped it.
so i call on monday. we don't have your order. :(

so i reorder it while i'm on the phone.
same price, same same day shipping.
no email, no thanks, no we shipped it.

i just got off the phone with them.
the speedo has not shipped.
no reason as to why same day shipping needs a call 5 days later.
it will ship today if they can get their ducks in a row.

anyone else experience this with classic parts?
is the economy that good that they don't need to ship parts?

i'm just venting.

I have the following to sell.all should fit any advance design Chevy

1.       Fulton sunvisor - all brackets and without dents, although the old
paint is flaking:  $250

2.       Front grille guard - chromed  (chrome in decent shape with little
rust and would be an easy rechrome job):  $125

3.       Weiand dual carburetor intake:  $200 (includes one Carter carb).and
old original (not a repop)

4.       Oil bath filter in good condition - fits the Carter carbs - dent
free:  $50

5.       Two windshield washers (both with the push button release) (only
one has a spray nozzle) (both have decent frames and with good decals (one
is a GM decal, the other a Trico):  $50 each.

6.       Pair of corner glass in good condition.no cracks or chips:  $75 for
the pair

7.       Swamp cooler A/C - hangs in the window.has mounting rod:  $150

8.       Speedo (0-80)(will definitely need refacing, but chrome is in
pretty decent condition.beyond that, not sure of accuracy:  $30

9.       Right rear fender in good condition.no rust out on either
end.basically free of rust (will not ship.must be picked up in Boise area)

10.   Grannie 4 speed (in 3rd, it will pop out if you don't keep pressure on
it, but with little time, that became something I did without even thinking
about it.don't spend much time in that gear), but other than that, was in
very good mechanical condition.  Free to anyone willing to pick it up.

Have pictures I can send if interested.  Will be posting on craigslist as
well (Boise area).  Prices do not include shipping.  Have not figured
shipping  out yet, but if interested, I'll get you the cost as soon as I
can.

Hi group,

A few months ago I finally finished my 1940 project. I have posted an album
with before and after pictures. It's named Mikes 1940 half ton.

This was a 5 or 6 year spare time project. I had never tackled anything like
this before, so I'm a little proud of it, and have had a ball driving it
around. Before the snow came, my wife and I were driving it everywhere. It
has proven to be completely reliable so far.

I have counted heavily on this list to help me, and I appreciate you guys
tolerating my sometimes dumb questions, and for the great help and answers.

When I bought this truck, I also got a lot of spare used parts with it. That
proved to be really helpful.

IF YOU AGREE WITH THE CONGRESSIONAL REFORM ACT OF 2011 PASS IT ON TO FRIENDS
AND YOUR CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS!

Subject: Congressional Reform Act of 2011

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3
months 8 days to be ratified!  Why?  Simple!  The people demanded it.
That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to
become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty
people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the
message.  This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

1. Term Limits.

12 years only, one of the possible options below..

A. Two Six-year Senate terms

B. Six Two-year House terms

C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2.  No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when
they are out of office.

3.  Congress (past, present future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security
system immediately.  All future funds flow into the Social Security system,
and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans
do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.  Congressional pay
will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the
same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American
people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective
1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.  The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go
home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take
three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message.  Maybe it
is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS! If you agree with the above, pass it on.
If not, just delete

Hey all, I've sorta been hiding in the quiet for a while, well, a long
while, lol. I made room and got the 53 in the shop last winter and was going to
have it at least driveable by this spring, well, spring came and went, along
with summer and the poor thing still sits with the seat and fuel tank now in
the bed, as far as it had gotten before life's hafta do's got in my way. I was
really wanting it far beyond its present status by now, and this winter I'm
getting serious about it. I've already rounded up some help from our local
club, and am beginning the process of planning ordering things. I've had many
ideas what to build it as in the 7 or so years I've been staring at it, and
have decided I want to make it all bone stock, and though I liked the idea of a
pearled blue paint, decided I want to keep that a stock color too and do this
right. I searched the links already and found that one site, but it won't let
me print out the chips so I can go stare
 at them against the truck

Anybody have or know where I can get some printable ones?
-Chris

Rec'd from a correspondent in mail group of heroes.

Give a big Hoo-ah! to the US Navy and the Army Doolittle Crews for their
raid. What courage, what uncommon bravery. Yet note the author's  assertion:
They simply did their job. Each of them felt that they were in the company
of heroes, but not a hero themselves.

This is a great read.

It was a different time, though not necessarily a time of lesser danger than
now. We simply responded to an attack on America by declaring total war on
the perpetrators and their allies and pursued them until their capacity to
make war was totally destroyed. We were a bold and great people then. Today
about half the population acts like a pathetic bunch of PC-whimps!

Compare Pre-revolutionary France [of the late 18th Century]: Now our
Secretary of State acts like Talleyrand, our President acts like Louis XVI,
his Wife acts like Marie Antoinette, and the Congress acts like the useless
Estates General. The King dismissed Patriots like Lafayette who wanted to
create a free France, but the collectivists, revolutionaries, and anarchists
of the day had different ideas and brought mayhem and destruction. Ten years
later Napoleon ruled France as a total dictator and roamed Europe trampling
other nation states under foot almost at will. The aftermath of Napoleon's
defeat created a vacuum, fertile ground for Karl Marx [1818-83] and his
theories to take root. We have been fighting communism ever since. Read an
unbiased history to discover what happened to all these folks... it is worth
your time!

But I digress

Our pathetic, Left-dominated education system fails to tell the stories of
these old warriors ... or for that matter, old warriors from Korea, Viet
Nam, the Hot-Cold Wars of the 60s,70s 80s, GWI and GWII, and Afghanistan.
Our children [some even well into their 50s] have absolutely no sense of the
sacrifices it takes to keep us free, and have only known the good life. Is
it any wonder that the country languishes in 10% unemployment, but won't
take those measures that will turn this country back into the engine of
freedom in the world.

Fewer than 1/3 [like Steny Hoyer] of our Congress Members have ever served
in the military. Very few of those who served are combat veterans. Men under
55 year of age were not subject to the draft. Fewer than 7%-10% of men
[depending on age group] under 55 are veterans. This is a pathetic statement
of willingness to support and defend the Constitution and our Republic. It
would seem that most talk about giving back to our Country did not apply
to military service. Compare this to the 70+% who served during the WWII,
Korea, and Vietnam era.

Draw your own conclusions about the future of America if the Progressives
finish their agenda of social engineering in the USA.

My dad had  an auto  mechanic's shop downtown close to the  main fire

I really like  cars,  and I was always busy on some project, and  it wasn't

Hey Ron

Good luck on the project.  Nothing like when you hear the old engine fire up
for the first time.  There's a wiring diagram in the Group files section -
you may want to check it out.  One of the first things I did to my '50 AD was
to install a new wiring harness.  At the time most of the vendors sold them for
about $100 and it gave me some piece of mind that I wouldn't have to deal with
shorts (fires!) or the like.  Keep us posted.

I hope to finally have a bit of time to try to get my truck running this week.
When I bought it this spring, it was some what in pieces with no battery, coil,
carb or generator.  Starter and radiator were not installed.   I have a carb
now and I think I can use the battery and coil from the 49 3/4T Chevy I also
own, just to see if I can get a fire from the old 235.  Now my question is, if
I am correct in assuming the truck is in fact a negative ground.  My
understanding is that the Chevy's are negative ground but the GMC's were
positive ground?  Also any other sage advice as I try to get the thing to run?
The engine is not stuck, I know, but I did have someone tell to be sure to oil
the rockers before starting it to make sure they are well lubed, since it takes
the oil pump a bit to get oil up to the rockers after the engine starts.

Oh, and I was quite pleased and not totally surprised to the find the ignition
key from the 49 fits the 54.  One more thing I won't have to search for to get
the truck going.

TIA

Ron

I used the Sherwin Williams two part epoxy product in my garage about 6
years ago and it is holding real good. No tire pick up, no damage from
dropping tools or chipping. We get snow around here every now and then so we
tend to track some of the sand they use for intersections in and as long as
I wash it off it holds. The only thing is that it has lost some of the sheen
due to the cleaner I use; Oil Eaters.

It cost me about $300 to cover a 3 car garage plus prep expenses. In my
opinion the secret to a lasting coating is on the prep work, which requires
a good degreaser, acid to etch the concrete after a good clean up and lots
of elbow grease, be prepared to lose a few pound doing the prep work.

Stay away from the crap stuff they sell at Home Depot, just find your local
Sherwin Williams store and get it there. I think the product that I got is
called tile clad or something like that.

Enjoy and remember the secret is on the prep work.

Hey All

This is a little bit off topic,  but I'm building a new workshop/garage for the
old truck and I want to put an epoxy coating on the floor.  Any suggestions or
recommendations on the brand or style?  Workshop is about 16 x 22.  Would have
liked something bigger but that's all the room I have.

Thanks for all your help

I'll add my 2 cents.  I had my running boards powder coated.  They're probaby a
little more glossy than original but the powder coating is so much more durable
than regular paint.

I recently painted RED RYDER'S running boards with a combination flat black
paint, which was both the primer and the paint, all in one, and it looks like
they were powder coated in flat black.  I did this with a sponge brush.

The running boards were, indeed, painted black. What sheen I don't know. I
put black vortex on mine cause it looks good and stands up much better than
paint. The spare tire on a Chevy goes on the left. On a GMC it was on the
right. I think it was like '52 or '53 that side mount spares became an
option. One thing that few people realize is that there is a shim that went
on the RIGHT spring assembly to compensate for the added weight on the left.
You can see it referred to in the factory Assembly manual.

My truck came to me painted all red including the running boards. I am
under
the impression that they were originally a semi gloss black regardless of
 the color.
Anyway I took it to the local body shop and he questioned if the original
was a black ribbed rubber. I have not seen that in any of the restoration
catalogs but I thought I would throw the question out to the group.

I am getting ready to mount the spare tire rim on the side of the truck.
Any
thoughts on putting it on the left or right?

I'm not sure what goes there originally but I put some thin insulation in there

Hello All,
I pulled the original headliner out of my 51 1/2 ton a few weeks back.  I had
already purchased a headliner from classic parts with intent to install it when
I pulled the old one.  The original was a mouse poo pinata...in pretty rough
shape.  When I took it down there was some sort of a 1/2in thick pad towards
the rear of the cab and some fiber batting or filler towards the front of the
cab near the windshield...all of it was chewed up and mixed with a heavy dose
of mouse droppings.  I wasn't aware of anything that was supposed to be under
the headliner, I'm not sure if the fiber filler was intended to be there or if
it was brought in by the rodents.  What goes where?  In what order? and who do
I buy it from?  Most of the carriers just seem to offer the headliners, I
haven't seen any foam pads or fiber filler for sale.  Thanks in advance for the
help.

Hi there group I have a 1 ton 1953 with a stock rear end with a 5.14 ratio and
it has the 8 lug rims with 235/80/16 tires and the I beleive stock 4 speed 12 C

It is also a 10 lug rear end but the 2 bolts on either end are closer together
then the rest of them.

It has the full pressure 235ci from a 56 truck.

I`m restoring this truck to stock but I do want to run it on the hiway at about
60 MPH, with out blowing the motor at some hi RPM. Is there a gear set that can
drop it down from 5.14 to around 4 or lower. Or a rear end that will drop into
the spot with out changing anything.

Please help  Gerry

My problem is solved. I bought an original, unrestored 1952 Arizona truck
license plate, that I can now use as my official everyday plate. I am
beginning to think that I am smarter than I look.

BTW, there's a guy in Vernon TX that restores license plates to new condition.
He can do either matte finish as original or glossy if you really want them to
stand out.  He did mine and they're better than new.  If I remember correctly
he's a little pricey at $35 per plate but the work was outstanding.

I found ebay to be a good source for old plates.  I was able to get a 1951
Texas Farm Truck plate for my truck in almost new condition.

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Heater control valve

2005-09-19 Thread Ken Cluley
Re: Heater control valve
Chris

There was both the recirulating type heater and the fresh air heater. The
recirculating type was somewhat round and mounted directly to the firewall.
The fresh air type is larger and mounts on the upper passenger kick panel where
a metal plate is located attached by 6 screws. It also has two mounting points
on the firewall. The fresh air heater draws air from the outside through the
passenger cowl vent. I've attached 3 pics of a heater I restored for my '50
3100. HTH.
