Juergen et al, (*and I mean everyone*!), This is so amazing. My 'hats', my 'Apache Hat', 'my IBM Hat', are off to you guys. If I may be so direct as to say, we have come together in a new way, fashioning the future from the past. This may sound simple, but it is not. I think we can agree on this. This is just the beginning. We have very many steep hills to climb and more trust to build and more arguments to wage. That's the norm, right? Our users depend on us now, we must not let them down, while we invite them to join and work with us at the same time. And we will continue to improve our work here as a healthy project and a vibrant community. My special role as a release manger was only a tiny piece (and nothing special) of the overall work we as a *community* have achieved with this first release. I could list many names and I am sure I would forget some. So I would like to say thank you to all who helped in the last month to bring our first release on the road. I will list only some key areas where we have achieved a lot: - migration of the website, the wiki, the user forum, the extensions and template repository, bugzilla - setting up new internal wiki at Apache, new pootle server, new project web page - IP cleanup of the code - setting up build bots - preparing regular dev snapshots and final RC - great QA work - archiving older releases and not yet integrated cws - establishing a powerful mirror network with new partners - work on documentation to reflect the new name and latest changes - ... The release is only the successful crowning end of a huge huge effort and a lot of work to migrate everything from Oracle infra-structure to Apache and partners. We all know that it was not only the source code that was migrated/moved but much more and especially the way how we improved over time our collaboration on different tasks makes me very proud and I am really looking forward to continue this work with all of you. We have strong characters in the project with different communication styles but I think we should always look twice what individuals are really doing here in the project and for the project before we adjudicate on somebody. I felt myself always as part of the OOo community and I never have moved to somewhere else ;-) (sorry I couldn't resist) Thanks to all of you Juergen Very well said !!! Re: [RESULT][VOTE] Release Apache OpenOffice 3.4 (incubating) RC1
Congratulations to all and thanks to Juergen, too. But the words are not enough; what is, is use. To that end, I've used the Mac version (and also Linux, though less so) daily, and it has been great. I've also used it with Google Docs, with Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, with Calligra (KOffice) and others. The application has not disappointed and also not crashed. (I wish I could say the same for other application I find myself using.) One other point. The release process for OOo was as efficient as it could be but also painful to many. I don't think that I've heard similar expressions of frustration and pain here. That's *great*. Is it is just an assessment of support/sentiment, or is there more involved? The ballot has this phrasing: But we invite all people to vote (non-binding) on this RC. We would like to provide a release that is supported by the majority of our project members. +1 Release this package as Apache OpenOffice 3.4 (incubating) 0 Don't care -1 Do not release this package because... I suggest that there are binding PPMC votes on this ballot. They are binding with respect to whether or not the release candidate will be submitted to the Incubator PMC for its consideration. While non-PPMC/-committer participants can of course vote their sentiment, there is something more valuable to be achieved in this process. Committers and PPMC members are expected to cast informed ballots. If any contributor casts a -1, it should be accompanied by a clear, specific explanation and suggestion of actions that would cure the situation. Here is something that all project contributors can participate in, with or without voting: PARTICIPATE IN QUALITY-ASSURANCE COVERAGE OF THE CANDIDATE It is valuable to download the source code and confirm that binaries can be built. It is valuable to download the binaries and confirm that they install properly under a variety of conditions. It is especially valuable to verify functions and operations that are important to you as an user of OpenOffice.org who desires to use Apache OpenOffice 3.4 as an upgrade. If this is your first try at testing a release in any way, all the better. It is also useful to confirm whether the same problem reported by someone else is also occurring for others. Rather than have many people conduct and confirm the same successes, it is useful for contributors to explore areas not previously reported on. It is particularly valuable to examine areas where there have been difficulties in the past to see if there is any change: improvement or degradation. Lily Zhao, Oliver-Rainer Wittman, and others have created wiki pages that can be used to help people organize their QA investigations and reports. There is a general page on the Apache OpenOffice Community Wiki with a table for addition of results: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+3.4+RC+Build+Test+Report. This is for general trials at installation and inspection of functions, rather than specific test cases. To add to this table, a Community Wiki registration is required. (Note: please use the page above for casual test reports, including of installation failures, rather than adding comments to the Release Candidate and Developer Snapshot pages. Help us collect these in a small number of places.) Test cases are defined on the OpenOffice.org Wiki at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/TestCases/. You can add or update test cases. Registration on the OpenOffice.org Wiki (different than the Community Wiki) is required to update these pages. Test results can be added on the OpenOffice.org Wiki at http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/TestResults. Registration on the OpenOffice.org Wiki is required. Editing is the same as for any MediaWiki installation, just like Wikipedia. There is an overall Release-QA-Plan for background: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Release-QA-Plan. - Dennis BACKGROUND CONSIDERATIONS - WHAT MAKES A RELEASE CANDIDATE ELIGIBLE TO BE A RELEASE? When a release candidate is voted on by the IPMC, it is *not* a statement about the quality of the release with regard to its function and reliability. It is an assessment of specific measures releasable code must satisfy, regardless of its function. There is no direct relationship to quality of the release as usable software. The IPMC determination is more about the completeness of the source, the IP clearance of the source code, and that everything necessary to build run-time versions of the code is provided. The binaries, the most important part for users, are assessed mainly for having been built from the released source, being certified as such by the release manager(s), and satisfaction certain additional requirements concerning dependencies, notices, and honoring of licenses. It might be that a serious quality issue, a release-blocker, is identified

Re: [DISCUSS] Re: [VOTE] Release Apache OpenOffice 3.4 (incubating) RC1
Hi, I'm a longtime user of StarOffice and OpenOffice and participated many years in d...@de.openoffice.org and in testing OOo and will continue this with AOO. Am 23.04.2012 16:09, schrieb Juergen Schmidt: ... The download page should at least mention that this installation set will replace a former installation of OpenOffice.org 3. What do you think people will expect when they download the software from downloads.openoffice.org? When you know the answer you will have probably the answer to your suggestion ;-) Juergen ... As I somtimes write books (f.e. manuals for OOo) with hundreds of pages, images (screenshots etc.) and links, as a user I expect, that I can retain the old version and test the new one until I'm shure, that I can safely continue my work with the new version. (You know: what's new in the new version? New bugs!) When the feature to replace the old version in any case was introduced (IIRC with OOo 2) I had a long discussion in d...@de.openoffice.org, but the bad decision (IMO) was not corrected. Nobody who is working on large documents can risk to change his writing tool. They will not replace f.e. OOo 3.3 with OOo 3.4 and so much intensive testing will not take place. OOo installing with param -a or /a was a means to use a new version (without system integration on Windows) parallel to the old. I hope that this is also possible with OOo 3.4 and later with AOO 4. Can anybody confirm this? -- Regards Günter Marxen

See this page, where several options are listed: http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#notes-disclaimer Keep in mind that page is clearly labeled as a DRAFT. http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#status The DISCLAIMER file is certainly in the correct place in the Source distribution. Well, I was not correct here. It is in the SVN, but fails to make it into any of the distributions. I did a MacOSX build, reviewed the NOTICE, LICENSE, rat-exclude and rat output from a nightly build. An amazing job was done with the Headers and the RAT report! Here are my concerns: (1) DISCLAIMER ought to be included in all packages. We'll have to see if this is a SHOULD or a MUST. (2) LICENSE contains copyright statements which ought to be part of the NOTICE file. Again we'll see if this is a SHOULD or a MUST. (3) When building from source there was no warning about the inclusion of Category B? I think that the Building Guide should be edited to more clearly explain the ext_sources and ext_libraries. I know we have the information. It is more making this clear. Again, I'm not sure if it a SHOULD or a MUST for a build to pause and get explicit permission to download category B. Regards, Dave I think that I answered the question, but I would like to ask our project Mentors if this will be an issue in IPMC voting. I've seen enough on general@i.a.o to know that it may be for some and not others. So, while this is not a problem for me, if it is likely IPMC will request an RC2 over this we should know now. Regards, Dave -Rob The SDK and Binaries are missing the DISCLAIMER file. Is a missing Incubation DISCLAIMER in a binary package enough to prevent release? Nobody who is working on large documents can risk to change his writing tool. They will not replace f.e. OOo 3.3 with OOo 3.4 and so much intensive testing will not take place. OOo installing with param -a or /a was a means to use a new version (without system integration on Windows) parallel to the old. I hope that this is also possible with OOo 3.4 and later with AOO 4. Can anybody confirm this? Yes, it is still possible for version 3.4 by the same way. I don't remember, whether it is possible to copy over the user folder. If you notice problems with extensions for example, you should start with a new, default user folder. No plans exist yet, whether a AOO 4 will replace a AOO 3.4. Kind regards Regina

But since you bring it up, there is no requirement for a DISCLAIMER file. There is however a requirement for making the user aware of the incubation disclaimer. I think we need to make it clear to the user that this is a project under incubation. There are several ways of doing this. Standalone DISCLAIMER is one way. Adding to README file is another explicitly called out in the podling release guide. (2) LICENSE contains copyright statements which ought to be part of the NOTICE file. Again we'll see if this is a SHOULD or a MUST. Do you have some examples? As I understand it, unless it is a required notice per the license, the only copyrights that go into NOTICE are the ASF copyright and the Oracle one which was relocated from the source files when the ALv2 headers were added. We're not required to put every copyright statement in NOTICE. If you build with the default build flags, then you get no category B code. If you want category B code then you need to explicitly add those command-line build flags. Maybe the impact of these flags needs to be clearer in the Building Guide? I don't think you really want the build system to actually pause and wait for human input. That might complicated the Buildbot Regards, Dave I think that I answered the question, but I would like to ask our project Mentors if this will be an issue in IPMC voting. I think probably not, but this may be an edge case. The application pop-ups do mention Incubation and every page linked back to thewww.openoffice.org shows the Disclaimer... Regards, Dave -Rob

And that was besides my own experiences with OOo 1, 2 and 3 another significant reason not to do any trials with OOo 3.4 until now. As said, nobody working seriously can afford to loose (parts of) his work by using a new version because of new bugs. But some of them are willing to test new versions with copies of the text. I think we can handle this efficiently. But we would need to take some precautions. Start with making a branch of RC1 in SVN, if RC1 is approved. If we then want to update a single language or a single platform, then we can make those changes in the branch. Or RC2. A branch this big will require coordination with Infra. we will need a branch anyway to have a code line for bugfixes etc. based on the release and the main trunk to continue the development to the next release. Juergen I think we would still require a release vote for any additional files we publish, such as updated translations, etc. So the same 72-hour voting process. Makes sense to me. But I don't think it would require that the IPMC do an in-depth review of the entire release, and it should not be necessary for us to do a complete regression test. I'd hope the IPMC would be satisfied to look at the SVN logs and see that only translations had been changed, and that would be enough to justify their approval. Before we hope, let's get through a release with IPMC approval. Depending on how we do, a push for graduation makes sense. In that case our PMC votes will be enough. Regards, Dave -Rob Herbert

+1 (PPMC, binding) and ditto Pedro's and Rob's comments on we should be proud. I installed and ran some tests with the 32-bit Linux RPM binary. I had been using a developer build since Apr 4 (can't note the svn release number at the moment), and things were looking pretty good then to me. Today, when I tried to do an update to that, I did run into a few issues and had to un-install the Apr 4 version and clean install this newer version. However, I think this situation may have been due an initial installation problem with that older 3.4 install. I will document my perceptions on openSUSE in the revised installation instructions and hopefully some of the other Linux folks and I can work on what's what with the install. It's wonderful to see the outcome of all this work come to a successful conclusion. On Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 7:21 PM, Kay Schenk kay.sch...@gmail.com wrote: snip OK, I have a question on this one. MUST we download and build or can we vote on an already built (binary) version? There was some discussion about this, and, yes, there are notes about this on general information for Apache releases, but...I jsut noticed the vote from Hagar Delest which implies he used a binary so this is why I ask. You are not required to build the AOO RC in order to vote. Remember, participating in the review and approval of releases is one of the most basic responsibilities of *all* PMC members. We have selected PMC members with a wide range of relevant skills, not all of them are coders. So not everyone is expected to build. But I would expect that everyone who votes will find something that they can do to help verify the RC. For example, installing, verifying a translation, reviewing the LICENSE and NOTICE file, reviewing the RAT scan output, etc. Remember, unlike a much smaller project at Apache, we cannot assume that there is even a single person who understands all aspects of the product. Not even one. Those who can build on Windows might not be the same ones who can verify the Gallacian translation, and those who understand the details of the LICENSE requirements might not have access to a 64-bit Linux machine to test that install. So we need to rely on others. So, a +1 to me means three things: 1) I have verified what I can verify and it looks acceptable for a release. 2) No one else has reported a credible, substantial issue with the RC. 3) I believe that there has been sufficient overall review of the RC. So obviously my vote can change based on what others find and report about the RC. In particular I plan to test a few install scenarios and if they work out, I'll vote +1 later today. But if someone later finds a serious issue, then I could change my vote. -Rob

This will be the first incubator release for Apache OpenOffice and a key milestone to continue the success of OpenOffice.org. This release candidate provides the following important key changes compared to former OpenOffice releases: (1) Code clean up to remove all copyleft components and external dependencies (2) Reworked or introduced LICENSE and NOTICE file to reflect and document the used licenses of the code itself as well as of external 3rd party libraries (3) MD5, SHA1, SHA512 hashes and GPG signatures for all of artifacts For a detailed feature overview please see the release notes under https://cwiki.apache.org/**OOOUSERS/aoo-34-release-notes.**htmlhttps://cwiki.apache.org/OOOUSERS/aoo-34-release-notes.html . -Rob Thanks Rob for the clarification (I had the same doubt expressed by Kay Schenk). I installed and used the build on my openSUSE 11.4, 64 bits box without problems so this is a huge +1 from me (PPMC member: rgb-es @ apache) Regards Ricardo

I am relatively confident I could, in fact, build AOO 3.4 having done such things many times in the past, but it would definitely take time away from other things I need to be doing to get ready for our release. -- MzK Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -- Robert Heinlein
