Re: [Origami] Froebel's folds of beauty
In David Mitchell's reply to Ilan's invitation to the current CfC monthly challenge, on September 5, he explained a bit about the term Froebel Folds of Beauty. Thank you, Dave. That's a subject I'm particularly interested in, although I often don't enjoy making my own . Wow! I thought they were always folded from a windmill base. If i understood you correctly, they are also made from a blintz fold? You also use the term "doubly-blintzed", are you referring to the initial steps to make a fortune teller or the windmill base? Thank you very much in advance, Dave. -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/NeorigamiComKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) Re: [Origami] Single-sheet cube stands?
Thank you to all who replied privately or through the list. By the way, I made a mistake in my email. I meant that the ones on Gilad's Origami Page are either modulars or are NOT older than Nakashima's video. Oops! For now, the oldest version I've found is by Kunihiko Kasahara, "Decorative Stand" in The Art and Wonder of Origami (2004). It's not the 80s, like David Mitchell mentioned, but I haven't been able to find an older version than that one. And, there's always the chance that Mr. Kasahara had created in decades before the book, and might have even published the diagrams back then in a Japanese book or magazine. Thank you, Matthew Hayward for pointing me to those diagrams. If anyone knows of one prior to 2004, I'd appreciate it if you let me know. -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/NeorigamiComKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) [Origami] Single-sheet cube stands?
Hi. Do any of you know of any single-sheet cube stand models, prior to Jo Nakashima's posted on November 4, 2010? https://youtu.be/fVj9J8SCqtE I looked in The Origami Database and Gilad's Origami Page. Re: [Origami] Books about paper folding (origami) in English from the 1950s and before that?
Thank you Dave Venables and Mitchell for your respective replies to my email. Legman's bibliography is very interesting and useful. I appreciate the suggestion very much. The following quote is by David Lister. You can find it here: https://www.britishorigami.org/cp-lister-list/lillian-oppenheimer The word "origami" was also mentioned as the Japanese word for paperfolding in Robert Harbin's book, "Paper Magic" in 1956 (...) At the same time, the word "Origami" appeared in the titles of several books in English by Japanese authors that were just beginning to appear in the United States and Europe. Which might be those "books in English by Japanese authors"? I checked for Japanese family name's in the bibliography, but none of the book titles seemed to be in English. [Origami] Books about paper folding (origami) in English from the 1950s and before that?
HI Aside from Robert Harbin's Paper Magic from 1956, what other books about paper folding (origami) in English are there, from the 1950s and before that? I know about Paper Toy Making by Margaret W. Re: [Origami] Creating a stand for things like medals
Sy Chen suggested I look for phone stands in origami in my search for origami holders for medals, plates, and other flattish round objects, and also mentioned he once also tried creating one. First of all, it was a great pleasure and honor meeting you in person, and thank you for trading a book with me. I love my new book! There are definitely many more phone stands in origami than for medals and plates! I have checked like maybe six designs. Unfortunately, I don't know the creator's name of most of them. From the ones I saw, only Makoto Yamaguchi's has a raised tip on each side, which would also work for objects such as medals. It can lift the medal in two points, one on each side, while also offering space for the bottom curved edge. All other phone stands I found offer instead an edge at table height, which would allow a round object to rotate and accidentally fall down. Michel Grand pointed me to Easel by V'Ann Cornelius. What a cute simple model! https://www.orihouse.com/until2012/newyork200206/32.html What I've noticed is that if the medal or plate is to heavy, it's curved bottom can make the sides of the easel open up and the round object will fold back on it. I feel I'm going the right direction with my model in process, and I'm surprised I found more origami bookend models than stands for this type of objects . Sy, might you remember what didn't you like when you were trying to create one? I am curious, but aside from that, your answer will probably help me in my project. Thank you once again. -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/NeorigamiComKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) [Origami] Post OUSA Convention - Offering an intercity bus voucher
So today is a week from the opening of the convention and my wife and I are now doing vacation stuff in the country. We had a last minute change of plans and had to cancel a bus trip we had already payed. I received in exchange a $23 USD voucher in exchange. It's good for a whole year and it's enough for one ride between certain cities; you can also pay extra and travel farther. One of you could use it for going to the OUSA Convention next year ♥️, for example. Would one of like to buy my voucher? I'd REALLY appreciate it. It's for Greyhound buses. If you agree, please contact me privately. My email address is gera...@neorigami.com Thank you so much in advance.
[Origami] OUSA Convention - Trade an origami book with me?
I have a copy of Pajarita Extra 2015 in absolutely perfect condition. Here's a picture of the copy I own: https://photos.app.goo.gl/sYaLCcUAqX3FFeHK8 It includes a wide variety of models, creators, and styles. Here is its entry in Gilad's database: https://www.giladorigami.com/origami-database-book/2860/Pajarita-Extra-2015 I also have a copy of The Art and Wonder of Origami by Kunihiko Kasahara in very good condition. The bottom edge of the front cover is a little bit worn (see the picture), and both the front and back cover have minimal bend marks. All the pages in the book are in perfect condition, and I can include the CD if you wish to have it. Front cover: https://photos.app.goo.gl/kuL8DFq4YEfKuLsk8 Back cover: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7UhdbZXyvAwZyviC6 Another amazing book my Mr. Kasahara, with different types of origami–models between simple and intermediate level–and very interesting bits of information. The book's entry in Gilad's database: https://www.giladorigami.com/origami-database-book/1446/The-Art-and-Wonder-of-Origami-by-Kunihiko-Kasahara I'd like to trade each one at the OUSA convention for origami art–coffe table–books or origami books that include a lot of text to read, rather than being full of diagrams, but please not math (it's simply a topic I'm not that fond of). Here are some I already own as examples of the type of books I'm interested in. - Complete Origami, by Eric Kenneway - New Expressions in Origami Art, by Meher McArthur - Paper Life, by Laura Rozenberg - The Art and Wonder of Origami, by Kunihiko Kasahara (I'm offering through this email one of my two copies) - Tomoko Fuse´s Origami Art, by Tomoko Fuse et al. And here are a couple of examples of books I still don't own and would love to receive as part of the trade! - Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami, by Meher McArthur and Robert J. Lang - Masters of Origami: The Art of Paper Folding, by V'Ann Cornelius et al. - Paper Life, by Laura Rozenberg (I have the ebook, but I'd love to have a paperback copy, either in English or Spanish) - Paper Magic: The Art of Paper Folding, by Robert Harbin (I am allowed to dream. Aren't I ?) But if you would like to offer me some other book that you think I'd be interested in, please do. Whichever the book, I do ask for it to be as well kept as the ones I'm offering. If you want to trade with me, and will attend the convention, please email me directly instead of through the list. Re: [Origami] Where does the comparison between origami and music come from?
Thank you once more to everyone who replied my question, both through the list and privately. I now see, to my surprise, that different people have come up with the same analogy. I wanted to concentrate on Lee's very rich email on the subject. Thank you, Lee for it! There's a reference to folding and music in an essay by Tolstoy titled What is Art? Wow! What does it mention in regard to both? I also wanted to echo his question to Peter (Engel) if this relation between origami and music was a topic discussed between Yoshizawa and you. I'd love to know! It's been a while since I watched Between the Folds. I didn't recall the references to both art forms in it, although I must confess they don't suprise me either. Re: [Origami] Where does the comparison between origami and music come from?
I received different answers regarding my question about the comparison between origami and music, both through the list and privately. Thank you all very much. I wanted to explain a bit more about the comparison I've "heard" in various occasions, which I'm asking about. I've often taken part in online conversations about origami and art, for example on The Origami Forum (back in the day) or on an origami WhatsApp group or Discord Server. Usually someone states that origami is closer to music than to other visual arts, such as painting and sculpting. Then that person argues that, unlike in visual arts, in music there are composers who make songs–just like creators in origami–and interpreters who play them and sometimes add their own style–just like folders in origami. Often, these comments are then connected to copyright in art and how it should be applied to origami the way it's applied to music. I've heard this exact ideas enough times to start suspecting that it was originally proposed by one person, and after time, the idea became popular. Have you heard, or read, them as well? Am I actually wrong and this composer/creator - interpreter/folder analogy wasn't first proposed by a particular person? Thank you in advance. Re: [Origami] The Third Joisel Award - Voting is Open
Lorenzo is asking why don't the names of the nominated creators and folders appear on the award entries webpage. This page https://cfcorigami.com/award-entries-2023 I'm not a part of the awards' organizers or anything like that. I am just an origamist that is very interested in this project as well as other projects related to the origami community. Now, I can tell you that the awards try to exclude the names of the people nominated, during the voting and judging phase, in order to reduce the related bias during the process. Conscious or unconsciously, some participants might vote for a nominated work because it was made by an origamist they admire, or not vote for another because it was made by someone they don't like so much or someone they just don't know. That wouldn't be OK. Here's a quote from the awards related with that: "Rules and Definitions (...)All nominations must include (...) 3. In reply to Laura's message from earlier today. I'm sorry for implying you had suggested a translation. Indeed, what you actually suggested was that I didn't need to translate its name when teaching it. I only meant, with my email from yesterday, that you believed the students could perfectly understand its association with a puzzle despite being from a single sheet. Sorry if that didn't come accross. It was me who wanted to give it a name in Spanish and, although that wasn't your intention, your words did help me a bit to decide what to call it. Re: [Origami] Name of the puzzle purse in Spanish?
At the begining of this month I had asked for help with the name of the traditional model, puzzle purse, in Spanish and received a few replies. I mentioned I was going to teach the model to a group of Spanish speakers, and that if I didn't find a popular name, Laura Rozenberg's and Karen Reeds's emails helped think of a translation of the name I was happy with. So, I taught how to fold the model about a week ago and I wasn't able to find popular name of the model in Spanish. I taught the model giving it the name "bolsa rompecabezas". I want to explain to you why I chose that translation "Purse" has different definitions. Although the first ones in the Merriam-Webster dictionary are directly related to money, none of the references to the model seem to mention banknotes or coins at all. I believe the model relates instead to this other definition of the word: "a receptacle (such as a pouch) shaped like a purse". Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/purse Continuing, Karen pointed to the book Repertorio Completo de Todos los Juegos by Marco and Ochoa y Ronna (1896). That book calls it "bolsa". That word can mean "bag", but it can also mean "pouch", just like the definition of "purse" from the Merriam-Webster dictionary. I think in the minds of most Spanish-speakers nowadays, we think first in plastic bags when we hear the word "bolsa", but that model predates the invention of such bags. Regarding the word "puzzle" I was hesitant to translate it as "rompecabezas", since I believe the word in Spanish is limited to jigsaw puzzles. Yet, in her email, Laura Rozenberg, mentioned how it would be easy to explain that the model is a type of "rompecabezas" just that from the folding of a single piece of paper. Aside from that, Karen Reeds revealed that the aforementioned book places the model under the section "Rompecabezas". That section begins with a parragraph explaining how the word is broadend in the book to include "any type of game with a difficult solution" (pg. 706). So I guess I was wrong, and "rompecabezas" is a proper translation of "puzzle" in this context. And that is why I called, and propose the model to be called in Spanish, "bolsa rompecabezas". Now, I think it's quite curious how the name "puzzle PURSE" stuck, despite it seems to be mainly described nowadays as a very creative type of Valentine's card from the past. Go figure . -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/neorigamicomKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) Re: [Origami] Name of the puzzle purse in Spanish?
I had asked for help with the name in Spanish of the traditional model: puzzle purse. Both Laura Rozenberg and Karen Reeds replied. Laura suggested not translating the name, but instead explaining what it is and Karen referred to a book in Spanish, which is quoted by David Mitchell on the webpage I had linked. Thank you both! It's an excellent idea to explain what the model is, but I must confess I have an obsession with model names... hahaha. I even wrote a long article about it, which was posted on The Fold. So, for example, it's important for me to write the name of the model and its creator on the folds I make and leave in the library for giving away, that also includes traditional models like this one. And I must confess I linked David's webpage but had not read it... oops. The reference from that historic book to the model as "la bolsa" is very revealing. I decided to ask a couple of origami historians, which now Spanish, if they know about a popular name for the model in said language. If not, I think I can use Laura's and Karen's answers to propose a satistying version of the name in my first language. -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/neorigamicomKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) [Origami] Name of the puzzle purse in Spanish?
HELLO I plan to teach this model to Spanish speakers: http://www.origamiheaven.com/historyofpuzzlepurses.htm First of all, should I just call it "puzzle purse" in English? I see it sometimes appears as "Valentine puzzle purse" and some others as "Victorian puzzle purse". What do you suggest? In regard to Spanish, have any of you seen any reference to this model–for example, its diagrams–in a book in said language? How was the model called? If not, those of you that also now Spanish, how would you translate it? I'd say both the word "puzzle" and "purse" can be challenging to translate to Spanish. There's no exact translation for the word "puzzle". "Rompecabezas" means "jigsaw puzzle", but isn't appropriate for other types of puzzles, like this purse. It's a similar situation with "purse"; the Spanish word would depend on the type of "purse". I'm inclined for "Cartera de ingenio", which would literally mean "Ingenuity purse". That's as close as I got. Thank you in advance. I'm currently creating a single-sheet closed box with a handle; I'm very ahead with the design. You can fold more than one and stack them by embracing the one on top with the handle from the one underneath. When I create this type of "different" practical models, it's important for me to know what's already out there. That's why I hope you can help with the following questions: 1. [Origami] Scrapbook paper in origami?
Thank you all who replied about A4 and letter-size paper for color-change models, both through the list and privately. In her reply, Chila Caldera mentioned scrapbook paper. I know just a tiny bit about scrapbooking... (1) so there's scrapbook paper of different weights/grammage? I often receive emails by different origami groups inviting to their next meeting, mentioning the models that will be taught and the materials needed. I have seen often requests for scrapbook paper for certain models. (2) If there are different scrapbook paper weights/grammage, is it implied when origamists talk about scrapbook paper? Those emails simply mention "scrapbook paper", without stating a weight/grammage. I have often heard that patterned paper shouldn't be used for origami workshops, since all its decorations might make it hard to identify reference points when folding and creasing. If that's true, (3) does scrapbook paper during origami workshops, both in person and online, become a problem? Those of you who have letter-size scrapbook paper that's appropriate for origami, like Chila, (4) is it exactly 27.9 x 21.6 cm? I ask because in Colombia, blocks of "letter-size" color paper are often off by more than a few millimeters in each side. I do have some models that need A4 or letter paper, and a duo sheet would be handy. But I only have same color on both sides kinda A4 or letter paper. I’ve sometimes doubled up two color sheets and made a duo version but sometimes that option tends to thicker than is ideal. Other times I’ve used white A4 or letter paper and drawn or printed on it in color to create a duo effect. The third option is like you mentioned, cutting A4 or letter paper from a larger sheet. I have some scrapbook paper which is 12”x12” but it is more like cardstock thickness. I think one can find letter size scrapbook paper which is printed/color on one side and white on the other - but this maybe cardstock as well. There’s some beautiful Kraft paper rolls that are green or blue or red on one side and then Kraft colored on the other side. This kinda paper also has textural ridges, which are quite nice. And one could cut A4 or letter paper size from the roll - but that takes a little careful effort to get accurately sized sheets. Best,Vishakha . In his most recent answer to my thread, David asked or examples of friction-based modulars. I know I had read about that before, maybe here on the list or somewhere else on the web. Now, I don't claim for it to be a stablished category of modulars, But there are some modulars that don't have strong locks and benefit from friction: Paul Jakson's Cube is a good example, Butterfly ball by Kenneth Kawamura, maybe also the Sonobe cube, as well as some flat modular stars, Trihedron Cubic Box which is another example: https://instagram.com/p/CcNwsAJrZCP Most boxes and lids also benefit from friction, although they aren't neccesarily modulars. Re: [Origami] Free easy to fold praying person diagram available?
Kenneth mentioned his interest in adding diagrams for a praying person on a prayer manual he's editing for his church and mentioned he found some on YouTube. I just wanted to mention that, when it comes to copyrighted works, it's important to first get the copyright owners authorization before doing something like republishing it, even if it is for a free publication. It's not enough to give proper credits. That is also the case regarding free diagrams, since the fact that they are available for free doesn't make them of public domain (without copyright). You can read more about origami and copyright here: https://origamiusa.org/copyright-faq And I'm willing to bet the creator of the YouTube video, isn't the copyright owner of said origami model nor the diagrams. That person probably simply took pictures from a book and turned them into the YouTube video without proper authorization. Such type of actions can only be reported by the author or its legal representative. So, he can't give you said authorization. I tried to find out who is the creator of that model through Google, but couldn't. I found two different models, which are similar, but not the one you found: praying moor in "Origami: The Art of Paper Folding" by Robert Harbin (it's creator was unknown at that time), and Moor at Prayer created by Miguel Salvatella, found in "Secrets of Origami" also by Mr. Harbin. -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/neorigamicomKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) Re: [Origami] Baseball Card Packet
Ian is asking for origami envelopes appropriate for standard-size trading cards. Do you need it to be of the exact size or can there be a bit of leftover space inside? I think many rectangular models will work for you. You'll find different diagrams here: http://www.orihouse.com/elfa.html https://make-origami.com/ELF/ Once you get the math behind the particular envelope, you can probably cut the initial sheet to the right size so that the final envelope end up with the dimensions you wish. I do advice that you add a few of millimeters, or sixteenths of an inch, taking into account the bulk of eight cards, There's one I like in particular, it's EnV DeloP, a variation by Michel Grand of Gay Merrill Gross's Merrill Envelope. That's because the model doesn't eat up too much of the original sheet, and in Michel's variation, you don't have to unfold the envelope completely in order to remove its contents. That means non-origamists will have no problem in opening and closing the envelope as many times as they wish. It has often happened to me that when I give certain types of origami containers to non-origamists, they end up with an unfolded and creased paper after opening it, which they don't know how to fold again nor have enough motivation to try. That's why I call those models containers for origamists ; ) If you're interested in that particular envelope, I suggest you contact Michel. Do you already know him? [Origami] United to Fold (UnFold) gathering this Saturday
This Saturday, December 3, 10:00 - 12:30 (New York) / 15:00 - 17:30 (London) / 20:30 - 22:00 (New Delhi), there will be a United to Fold - UnFold gathering. You are all welcome to join; it's through the Zoom platform. Two or three volunteers will teach how to fold each a different simple or intermediate model. After that, everyone is divided into smaller groups just to meet people from different countries that share one common interest: origami! If you would like to attend, and you still aren't a part of the Foldeas/UnFold email list, email me. I will ask you to first add me among your contacts and whitelist my email address; I'll provide a guide explaining how to do that: gerardo(a)neorigami.com At the previous gathering, James Dobson, from the UK, taught Squishy Squishy, created by Fumiaki Kawahata: https://photos.app.goo.gl/95C4TuBHiKR3NfJC9 And Roopika, from India, taught Weathered Shell, created by Tomoko Fuse: https://photos.app.goo.gl/iMT6UpyXP8zB3e6y9 See you Saturday! -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/neorigamicomKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...) Re: [Origami] one side colored paper
Elina Gor asked for sources about the origin, in origami, of paper that's colored on just one side. This is the only reference I have about it: "Japanese also started to produce origami paper, a square of Western paper colored on one side, because of the needs of kindergarten to teach Fröbelian origami". That's by Hatori Koshiro, from his web article History of Origami: https://origami.ousaan.com/library/historye.htmlYou'll find it in the third paragraph, under the subtitle: Traditional Origami. Elina, I suggest you also ask directly to David Mitchell. He might know much more about the topic. I wanted to make a follow up email. I received a couple of emails from members of the list, thank you all. And thanks to Anne LaVin I contacted NOA and learned a couple of things. According to their email, origami Day in Japan was indeed established by the Nippon Origami Association NOA, and in 1980... 42 years ago! [Origami] Questions about the establishment of Origami Day in Japan
HI EVERYONE So I'm a bit curious about the stablishment of November 11 as Origami Day in Japan. Who participated in its establishment? In what year was it established? I know of two versions as to why was that date chosen as Origami Day: (a) 11/11 represent the four sides of a square of paper like the ones used most often for origami nowadays, and (b) the First World War Armistice was signed in that date, but in 1918, and since the origami crane became a symbol of peace with the passing of Sadako Sasaki, November 11 was considered a good date to celebrate origami. Is one of these two the main reason as to why that date was chosen? If so, which one? Was there another reason? Thank you in advance! -- Gerardo G. gerardo(a)neorigami.com instagram.com/neorigamicomKnowledge and Curiosity in Origami: six private classes online "(...)
