SharePoint Online reporting
Hi all, I'm wondering what peoples' experience is with the inbuilt stats and reporting capabilities of SharePoint Online out-of-the-box? Has it improved a lot since SPS2010 days, or are 3rd party tools still the best option? SPS2010 - custom views

Mirroring prod to uat - SPS2010
Hi guys, I ran across this issue a few years back, but cannot for the life of me remember how I got around it. I've migrated a copy of our PROD database to our UAT environment (SharePoint 2010); it seems to work fine, until I edit a page, and then check it back in - as soon as I check it back in, it comes up with an error value isn't in range. Checking through things, I decided to try edit the page through SharePoint Designer, where it opens it in the browser; however, when doing so it opens the PROD page, and not the UAT page. Trying to edit the page layout does the same thing - a new instance of SharePoint Designer opens, loading the PROD site. I'm assuming that somewhere there is a reference missing or something wasn't configured properly. I know I had the same issue previously, but can't find the resolution. Does anyone here know why the UAT copy would reference the page layouts on PROD? If so, it'll be the old URL Page Layout reference. Add the Layout Page column to a page library and check the URL. If it's poi8nting to prod then you have a few options out there. I find a simple PS script is the easiest and most flexible. Depending on the number of sites and webs you may want to tackle them individually. Suite bar and ribbon container
Hi all, I'm busy playing with a POC of SPS2013 in my spare time to get a feel of things (better late than never I guess). One thing I remember from building our SPS2010 intranet, was the amount of space wasted by the ribbon and the whole site actions menu bar. I know they only show up for people with contribute access, so general users don't see it (except for their name etc) What I was wondering is if SPS2013 makes it easy to hide the suite bar and ribbon container, making it visible either as a hover-over, or like a flyout when clicking on something? These are just random thoughts at the moment, but remembering how corp comms hated the wasted space, I was hoping something might be possible these days. Correlation ID:6c79b622-0af4-442e-96d2-3727301d5a37. Currently the Authentication Mode is set to BDC Identity within SPD. I did read somewhere else that you need to specifically change a setting around 'RevertAll' in powershell, which I did, but that hasn't had any effect. RE: JS Client OM - script only runs in edit mode
I've actually just been doing something like this. As soon as you check in the page, all javascript etc in a CEWP is removed. The way I worked around it is to put everything in a text file, save the text file to a document library, and reference that from the CEWP. My text file is attached (if it makes it to the list) and then when you add the CEWP, the very first option gives you a chance to pull in content from a url - simply insert the url to the text file. Database woes
Hi guys, I'm hoping someone here might have an idea / solution to the below. On Monday, I went through the process of detaching and deleting a bunch of databases from our MOSS environment (these databases were duplicated and then we used the db attach method to upgrade them to SPS2010 last year) Today, tech services brought to my attention a bunch of errors in the event log (I have no idea when they started, but the oldest records are from 4am yesterday - the events registered were coming through at around 4 per second, so my guess is the event log dropped older items) Anyway, the specific errors are as follows: Login failed for user DOMAIN\Acc1. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: local machine] (This is the DB server) Login failed for user DOMAIN\Acc2. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: 10.9.30.20] (This is our IDX/CA server) I've gone through this and related postshttp://www.eraofdata.com/sql-18456-login-failures/ and set up SQL Profiler to capture some info. In all cases, the database mentioned as being unavailable is 'master' (see screenshot from SQL Profiler below). The ClientProcessID on the DB box correlates to the PID for SQLAGENT.EXE (I haven't checked the other box yet) So far, I've changed the default databases for both accounts to a different database, given both accounts 'public' and 'db_datareader' to the master database, mapped them etc. all to no avail - the errors are still coming through constantly. I'm unsure if detaching the old databases could have caused this, and I'm stumped as to how to fix it. Maybe I misunderstood. The issue I've had previously is sometimes when you add a new field to a form and promote it to SharePoint, all existing forms mysteriously show no data in the list. We have a number of web applications. At one point, almost all of them were configured to use Kerberos (via Authentication Providers under Manage Web Applications) One of them, our main intranet site (Sharepoint 80) is still configured to use Kerberos and works fine. None of the other sites now work with Kerberos. I've had to switch them all gradually back to NTLM authentication. (When using Kerberos, users get asked to log in all the time, and credentials are rejected after three attempts.) There are several sites that use the same app pool identity as Sharepoint 80. I cannot see any difference between the way the sites that don't work are set up and the way the site that does work is set up. What is going on here? RE: SPS2010 User Profiles
Hi all, The import issue has been resolved. It seems someone decided to start using the ‘extensionAttribute1’ field for their own purposes, which was part of our user base filtering. Regarding the ‘my site deletion’ emails going out, does anyone have any ideas how to stop the email itself from being sent, without disabling the timer job? Does anyone know of a way to disable the email part of this clean-up job? This is the email that is sent to a user’s manager say “Person X has left, you have 14 days to check their stuff”. 2) Our profile imports aren’t working properly. Every now and then, a new person joins and ha their account created in AD. When the profile import job runs, it only imports SOME of the data from AD. Other fields (e.g. Mobile, State, Post code and most importantly – Manager) don’t get imported. This leaves a bunch of empty lines in the profile view, however it also results in the ‘Organization Browser’ not working. For some other users it works fine without issue. As a test, I deleted my own profile and mysite, then manually ran a full import, and it didn’t bring in all the info. I’ve added 2 screenshots to show an example. I’m not too concerned about point 1 above, but point 2 is something I need to get resolved, and nothing I’ve tried works. SPS2010 Search woes
Hi all Our new SPS2010 environment has been running for about a month and a half now, without any major issues - until today. Since this afternoon, search isn't working anymore - I get the below error message. Item not crawled due to one of the following reasons: Preventive crawl rule; Specified content source hops/depth exceeded; URL has query string parameter; Required protocol handler not found; Preventive robots directive. ( The item was deleted because it was either not found or the crawler was denied access to it. ) The search crawl account still works (I can log into the site with it and browse around). It's not an external site - purely internal. I'm at a complete loss as to what might have happened. I've double checked the content source URL and there are no query string parameters, it's the root site's url, and I'm pretty sure no preventative rules have been set up. Does anyone have ideas? RE: SPS2010 Search woes
.. What is it they say about some problems having so simple a cause that it always gets overlooked? Thanks to Chris, I logged onto the indexing server to install Fiddler, so I could run the tests. I open up IE, and of course it tries to load the intranet, as that is what the homepage is set to. Guess what didn't load? I load up IIS and lo and behold, the website for the main portal site is stopped, as is the application pool for it. The mysites one was fine, as was the CA, which is why the user profile database and mysites were indexing correctly. Of course, everything is working fine on the WFE so I didn't even think of looking at IIS. I'm not going to ask why the portal and mysites are set up on the IDX server - I'm assuming someone decided to set up load balancing or something. But yeah, start up the IIS site and it suddenly starts indexing fine. (at least I assume it's fine, as it's now successfully indexed 9831 pages and going strong (here as before it had a nice fat zero). RE: Page layouts
Hi Brian Thanks for pointing me in that direction :) I decided to try modifying the masterpage first, before redoing everything in HTML. I hid the default PlaceHolderTitleBreadCrumb and created a 2nd one called PlaceHolderTitleBreadCrumb1. I think changed the page layouts used across the site to refer to the new placeholder, and it works great. The files in the 14 hive can now overwrite whatever they want because it's hidden, and the system pages display with the current nav as it doesn't know any better. [cid:image003.png@01CCCFA8.967B2550] Nigel From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of Brian Farnhill Sent: Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:19 PM To: 'ozMOSS' Subject: RE: Page layouts They don't use a page layout as such, they are all custom ASPX pages that sit in the 14 hive, and from memory they will grab a different site map provider to the default one that is used in the page layouts in SharePoint (They use SPSiteMapProvider and I'm pretty sure that page layouts use the CurrentNavigation one). Also they use different properties on the ListSiteMapPath control to generate that cascading offset as well. You should be able to get around this in your master page by hiding the PlaceHolderBreadcrumb placeholder and just putting a constant set of HTML and controls in to the master page that you want to be used everywhere, because all the system pages just override that placeholder to do the content their way. Pretty sure there isn't ever anything else important that will get missed by hiding that place holder, but as always test your site after the change to be sure. We were using Nintex Workflow 2007 for a couple of years without issue. We went live with our v2 of the intranet last week Monday, and part of that was upgrading to Nintex Workflow 2010. So far, so good. It's only been a week, but the actual upgrade from Workflow 2007 to 2010 was relatively easy; all current workflows (built in 2007) work fine; however with it only being a week since we started using it extensively, I can't give a definitive answer. User profile photos (SPS2010)
Hi all Not strictly a SharePoint question, but thought I'd ask anyway. We have our user profiles set up correctly, so people can upload their photos to SharePoint. This then sync's to AD, and thus populates photos into Outlook. This all works fine, however sometimes, if someone updates their photo to a new one, it changes it everywhere except in Outlook (very often only on their own PC) Other people see the new photos in Outlook, but not the person who changed theirs (if that makes any sense) Does anyone know how to get outlook to update the photos? (Closing and reopening the client doesn't help) I'm assuming they're cached somewhere, but haven't been able to find out where yet. nigel Kind Regards, Nigel Hertz SharePoint Administrator Developer, Information Technology Stockland, Level 25, 133 Castlereagh Street, Sydney NSW 2000 T: +61 2 9035 2617 M: +61 4 0103 4605 F: +61 2 8988 2617 E: nigel.he...@stockland.com.au www.stockland.com.au Before printing this email, please consider the environment. RE: SPS2010 - people search error
Yeah, only occurs with people searches. My comments inline below. I'm stumped. It only occurs with People searches? Sounds like you're not alone. * Did it EVER work? Yes. We've only noticed the issue after going live yesterday. * Are you using FAST Search? No. * Look at the query string in the failed URL. If you convert the %20s to %22s do you get a result? There are no %20's, it's a space. Replacing the space with %20 sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. %22 seems to work all the time. * If you search on John Sm* do you get a result? Yes, without issues. * Are you seeing Event ID 60 on the search server? Only 1, on the WFE - dated 3 Dec. * Do you have more than one Query Component in the farm? Nope. * Have you recently patched the farm? If so, confirm that the Content Access account is correct and not been reverted to Network Service. No. double-checked, and the correct account is being used. * Does an IIS reset on the WFE resolve it? Haven't tried yet - will do this tonight. Peoplesearch results - image sizes
Hi all I'm modifying our 'people search results' page to show details in a tabular format. I've got everything displaying the way it should, except for the fact that I want to make the employee photo smaller (it defaults to the 96x96 px sizing) Does anyone know how to modify the xslt to use the small (32x32 px) thumbnail for a user that is stored in the profile database? I've included the snippets of xslt below. (You can change the placeholder to use the small one easily, but I have no idea how to change the user photo) Nigel P.S. SP2010 Page layouts - RichImageField
Hi all I'm creating a page layout for news articles in our 2010 dev environment. On the page, I have a Page image field (PublishingWebControls:RichImageField) into which I want to add an image. I've got a new page, using the above page layout. When editing it, I can click the 'Click here to insert a picture from SharePoint', browse to an image, and insert it. As soon as I click save (either save and close, or save and keep editing) the image disappears, and it defaults back to the 'Click here to insert' I've checked all tag properties, and everything appears fine. Google isn't much helps - the only issues others seem to be having is that the page shows html instead of the image, but I'm not even getting that far. Does anyone have any suggestions? SP2010 User profile imports
Hi all In our MOSS environment, we import users using the below LDAP query string. It is loosely 3 different inclusion rules. Basically, the first rule says import any user accounts that start with 'U', have a surname and an email address, does not have a pager value, and is not disabled. The second rule imports accounts that start with 'SYD', '.MR', and thirdly, it imports accounts that have a value in 'extensionAttribute1'. Does anyone know how this sort of 'query' would be implemented in SPS2010? Apart from the 'exclusion' rules being the opposite, there doesn't seem to be any documentation about how the 'all apply' and 'any apply' rules are grouped. Is it even possible to have ((a and (b or c)) and x or y) type queries? Outlook Social Connectors - mySites
Morning all Outlook 2010 has the option to utilize 'social network connectors'. On my machine, I can add Facebook, Linked-In as well as the My Sites from SharePoint 2010. It's a pretty nifty feature. I've been trying to configure the 'My Sites' connector on a couple of colleagues machines, however it's not available. They're both on Outlook 2010 and both use our SPS2010 environment regularly (part of our upgrade team, so they've been doing extensive testing). From everything I've read on the 'net, the 'My Sites' connector should be there by default. It doesn't have a standalone download or install. I've checked 'add and remove programs' and they both use Office 2010 Professional Plus, and both installations have been set to 'Install all features on my computer', howver the elusive 'My Sites' connector is still missing. I don't recall adding anything special on my machine to get it working - I just configured it one day, and everything worked. One thing I've noticed on my machine that they don't have, is the green 'Add' button under the photos, however I don't know how to get that there either. Just to confirm, all of our machines have the social connectors add-in installed and configured, and I can add the facebook connector on their machines, but there's still no 'My Site' connector. Has anyone come across this and / or know how to rectify it? RE: People search - wildcards (SPS2010)
Thanks Maxine, I had actually just opened that page 5 minutes ago. I like the below comment: if all you need to do is to add the asterisk to the query, then it's possible to add it in the confuguration of the federated location you are using. Since even local searches are routed through the federation layer, as documented here: msdn.microsoft.com/.../ee558338.aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee558338.aspx - The search result Web Parts in SharePoint Enterprise Search are built on top of the federated search object model. - then you can add the asterisk to the query template of the Local Search Results location, like so: {searchTerms}* . It seems to me you'll achieve pretty much the same, no programming needed. Powerpoint docs randomly drop charts (MOSS 2007)
Hi guys I saw a call logged today where a few people mentioned that some PowerPoint documents seem to randomly drop any charts that are embedded in them, and the next time the document is opened, the charts are back (or, randomly, not). It doesn't appear to matter who the user is or what PC is being used to access the teamsites - it's completely random. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced this previously? Basically, the server is MOSS 2007 SP2 (December '10 CU) and the clients are a mix of Win XP and Win 7, with either MS Office 2007 or MS Office 2010. SharePoint, InfoPath, links and 256 charact limits
Hi guys I'm sure most of you know that most of the MS Office product suite, including SharePoint, likes to limit URLs to 256 characters. A good example is 'ctrl-k' in an office document, past a long URL in, and have it chopped off at the 256th character. There are workarounds to get longer URLs pasted in (at least in Outlook, I haven't tried others) My issue is that if I want to link directly into an InfoPath form, I can't. (Instead of going to the library and clicking 'New' - don't ask, but apparently the extra click is too much effort) What we've had to do is try create HTML pages that then redirect to the form using meta-refresh or some similar strategy. RE: SharePoint, InfoPath, links and 256 charact limits
I actually answered my own question on this after playing around a bit - virtual directories in IIS that redirect to specific URLs. I've created a virtual directory for each form, and so far it seems to work perfectly. From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of Nigel Hertz Sent: Monday, 18 April 2011 8:47 AM To: ozMOSS Subject: SharePoint, InfoPath, links and 256 charact limits Hi guys I'm sure most of you know that most of the MS Office product suite, including SharePoint, likes to limit URLs to 256 characters. The problem with that is that opening from within search doesn't always work. Has anyone encountered this and found some alternative workaround? RE: MOSS 2007 / TopAnswer.webpart
I used the Feb 2010 CU for most of last year, and never had any such issues (we also rebuilt a dev server during that time, and applied the same CU) I think the google article is possibly referring to the fact that the WSS updates must be applied before the MOSS updates (i.e. WSS SP2 then MOSS SP2 then WSS CU then MOSS CU) Looking at MSDN and Technet, I found this which may be relevant: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/8ea9b475-2b68-4180-8424-072195e167e7 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadmin/thread/6cbc8276-bd7e-4f81-acc2-f8da22ace432 From: ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com [mailto:ozmoss-boun...@ozmoss.com] On Behalf Of Daniel Brown Sent: Thursday, 17 March 2011 11:52 AM To: ozmoss@ozmoss.com Subject: MOSS 2007 / TopAnswer.webpart Howdy all, Doing an install of MOSS 2007 SP2+Feb2010 CU and when provisioning the My Site collection, SharePoint is coming back with The IIS Web Site was extended with Windows SharePoint Services, but the following error occurs in creating the default site http://my.contoso.lan/;. I wish I could help with this - because that would mean I'd actually got it working this side. It works fine until I save the page template, and then I get 'unspecified errors'. Profile database and photos (MOSS 2007)
Hey all Got a strange question that's sort of bugging me. In the user profile database on MOSS 2007, there's the option to add user photos. Currently, all our employee photos are stored in a teamsite, and their 'mySite' points their photo URL to that teamsite. This URL is also stored in Active Directory (under the 'websites' | 'other' property) What generally happens is reception updates these URL's in the profile database on SharePoint. My understanding is that up until a week ago, the profile database updated AD with these URL's, but since last week Wednesday, this has stopped happening, with the result being that AD now overwrites the picture URL field in SharePoint (i.e. If the URL has been changed in SharePoint, AD overwrites it, with the result being that ). Is this 'writeback' to AD even possible out the box? (I never thought it was, but the evidence seems to point otherwise) Nothing has changed in the UPD to my knowledge, and the property field mappings have been unchanged for a few months.
