Hello I want to know these speakers you are describing are they the best
on the market that are accessible to us or is there sonie ones and
creative labs ones as well I am just trying to find out everyone's opinion
on here about speakers before purchasing them.

Okay, as I remember here's what's in the Altec Lansing Expressions Ultra

2 satellite 2-way speakers
1 Sub-Woofer
1 control panel
1 3.5MM-3.5MM jack lead
1 manual
1 3.5MM socket to 2 RCA jack adapter

To the control panel, its round and consists of a number of controls.

As you'll see it looks like a mini witches hat, the hat itself turns in
either direction, you'll hear or feel it click as you turn it, each time
it clicks the faster the control.

For example by default the knob controls the volume, turn it to the first
click clockwise and the volume increases slowly, turn to the next click
and volume increase is more rapid and so on.

On the top of the controller are 3 buttons, 2 which are big and a middle
button which is small.

The upper of the 2 big buttons is your treble, press once and then turn
the knob to adjust treble.

The lower button is your bass, press once and then turn knob to adjust
base.

The smaller button in the middle is your power button, press once to
turn power on and press again to turn power off.

This button has another default, if held down for 3 seconds the speakers
are reset to their default volume, bass and treble settings.

Now their could be more options and settings I don't know about, I
mentioned that the manual isn't the readable type so everything I've
mentioned here I've found out by playing around with the system.

buttons

to me. Also does anyone have a list of exactly what comes with it? I am
paranoid. There is a little piece that looks like a splitter for input
but

it is odd that it doesn't connect to a male piece. Do you need an extra
corde like the one that goes from the control to the pc to go from the
splitter to the controller? Also I am not finding the power button on
the

sub woofer itself.

Yeah, the alternative source input did strike me too! if it is then I
can
find a way to switch to the thing, problem with the Altec Lansing
manuals is
that they're very graphic and I can understand that, after all when
dealing
with things like these speakers its probably much easier to show
pictures of
how to connect and install rather than ramble on about the connection
and

installation process, they're not too difficult to figure out anyway.

Now on another aspect of this speaker system, I found a page on the Net
which lists the actual specs of the system so if anyone's interested
I'll

post to the list.

Hi!

Did anyone else on the list end up getting this speaker system? I have

here and I have 1 question, between all the sockets for the speakers and
control panel on the back of the sub-woofer is a small 3.5MM jack
socket,

anyone know what this is supposed to be for?

Re: Winamp Versus wmp Versus VLC Versus....

2011-12-03 Thread chris hallsworth
I use Winamp full time for just about everything except buy music or
manage my iDevices, which I use iTunes for. I say this as Winamp can
apparently manage your iPod in a limited way, but choose to use iTunes
for that and Winamp for others. I know you didn't want anything to rip
or burn, but I will pass the below on anyway. The free version of Winamp
allows you to rip at a maximum of 8x in the M4A, or iTunes, format. I'm
happy with this personally as M4a is the best compared to MP3 in terms
of audio quality (excellent) and file size (smaller than even MP3). You
can burn with the free version of Winamp as well but I think you are
limited to 2x. Anyway back to the point. Winamp is fully accessible
providing you use the classic not the bundled modern skin that it comes
with. It works with all screen readers, with or without scripts or sets
or whatever. I've been using Winamp since 2001, yes 2001, when I was on
Windows ME and Winamp was 2.7x, something silly like that. I use 5.622
and it is still as accessible as the early days. There was one
unsuccessful version of Winamp, Winamp 3, which was an absolute disaster
in terms of accessibility, and almost turned to another player until I
tried version 5.0x. Just some thoughts.

On 02/12/2011 23:17, Walter wrote:

Hi all. I'm toying with the idea of experimenting with various media
players. Unfortunately not all are worth the trouble and still others are
not accessible with JAWS. At this time I use both VLC witch does a good
enough job and WMP which is fine but rather restrictive. I'm referring here
to playback and neither ripping nor burning as I use Nero express for
burning, and now and then Express burn. For ripping I use CDEX which I
like. I used to use Reel player but when I got my PC reformatted I never
did reinstall it. My question is how does Winamp compare with the other
media players I've mentioned? I have never observed this player being used
nor of course tried it. Is it accessible with JAWS 12 and or do you need
scripts to access it's functions? How is the playback quality and response
time. Sometimes the latest version isn't the best version so in your
opinion, what version is the most successful? Finally, what other players
would you recommend, free or otherwise. The important thing is ease of use,
it is of little use if the sound quality is the best in the world but if you
can't use it with a screen reader then it is a waste of time. All comments
will be welcome and read. Walter.

Update on Winamp was Winamp versus wmp...

2011-12-03 Thread Walter
Ok folks. I have downloaded the latest version of Winamp. I thank all for
their response but have not been able to reply to each and everyone but
thank you all. As I said, I've downloaded the latest version and when
installing I had three choices, light, standard and full. I opted for the
full option, was that a mistake? Or would the standard or light have been a
better choice? When I launch Winamp I get the set up dialogue but I'm not
sure what it is asking me. The first thing I get is a long list of file
types with check boxes, I assume you can either accept them all or uncheck
any file type you don't want. I also get a option to enable Winamp agent,
what is this? If someone could walk me through this I would be grateful as
I don't want to accept stuff that is unnecessary and just confuses things.
I haven't ventured from the first dialogue screen on the set up page. Your
help would be appreciated. Walter.

Five Live Extra is not geoblocked beyond the UK borders. I even have the AAC

Simply install Tapin-radio

and type
bbc

through a shortcut e just like edit fields in browsers. You can arrow down to

Hello Walter. All those checkboxes for filetypes are what you want win amp
to be able to play. I usually just choose select all. From what I know
standard should be fine. Also, and this is key. If jaws ever doesn't seem to
be reading right odds are you have changed the skin by accident. You can
only use the classic skin from what I know. You can change this easily by
hitting control p for preferences and then s for skins and choose classic
and hit enter. I hope this is a good enough start and if you have any

Walter.

Hi. Well, in the set up dialogue there is an option to select Winamp agent,
the box is checked by default but I don't know what this is and if I would
be better off unchecking it, do you know what it is? Walter.

I hope this is a good enough start and if you have any
further questions feel free to ask.

the software can be a little challenging for beginners but there are

I mainly like iTunes I have to admit for the Smart Playlist feature
where you can create aplaylist and literally programme it to play what
you want to be played, for example if a song has been played over so
many times, if a song was added on a particular date and so on.

Hi,

Five Live Extra is not geoblocked beyond the UK borders. I even have the AAC
128kb/s stream for that one since there are regularly accessible just the
weak WMA with about 32kb/s over the website outside the UK which isn't too
much...

Simply install Tapin-radio

and type
bbc
into the search field in main window. The search field is also accessible
through a shortcut e just like edit fields in browsers. You can arrow down
to 5Live Extra in the search list then.

And with rockbox loaded on it you should have a very accessible mp3 player

The same program works for both 32 and 64 bit. The truth is Winamp runs

You can certainly find batteries for them yep and bigger hard drives too!
best place to look is at Ebay.

Then you'll have to get someone to put the battery in for you and its not
something that's easily done, your local service shop should have the tools

The same program works for both 32 and 64 bit. The truth is Winamp runs
using the wow64 system that is implemented in 64 bit operating systems.
wow means Windows on Windows, and is a system to allow 32 bit programs to
run natively on a 64 bit operating system.

Ok in the first screen choose Winamp Classic and click next. On the next
screen you can leave the file types alone but uncheck use Winamp Agent
then click next. You might as well skip the rest and click finish to do so.

what is this? If someone could walk me through this I would be grateful as

Re: Update on Winamp was Winamp versus wmp...

2011-12-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I've just unchecked Winamp Agent because it's just another process I
don't think I need running on my PC. I don't install enough media
players, and I'm careful when I do, so I don't worry about my file
associations getting taken over. That being said, it's a good precaution
for anyone who is worried about it or has had a bad experience with
losing their file associations. I haven't run it in a while, but I don't
think there's an accessibility issue with JAWS. I'd be curious to know
where FS recommends not running Winamp Agent.

There's another utility called Winamp Remote, or something like that,
which as I recall is not accessible and can get in your way of your
winamp experience. It has something to do with controling winamp
remotely. I've always unchecked this option.

Winamp has a nice feature of remembering your settings from your
previous install, and there's an option somewhere where you just tell it
to install Winamp the same way you did before. This is nice because you
don't have to worry about remembering which buttons to check and
unchecked. Unfortunately, because of this, I can't recall which options
I frequently unchecked!

Smaller most definitely there is no doubt about that!

It's one of the only mp3 players around that has a line output for example.
And newer technology does not necessarily mean better sound quality in the
end. Would be interesting to do a straight comparison between the iriver
and my Nokia e52 which is reputed to have better sound quality than the

Hello I want to know these speakers you are describing are they the best
on the market that are accessible to us or is there sonie ones and
creative labs ones as well I am just trying to find out everyone's opinion

on here about speakers before purchasing them.

On 12/1/2011 5:54 PM, Dane Trethowan wrote:
Okay, as I remember here's what's in the Altec Lansing Expressions Ultra
Box apart from mounds of packing which is absolute proof that us humans
 are descended from apessmile.

 I'll

that's not quite true, there are different quality decoders out there

Hi all. I'm toying with the idea of experimenting with various media
players. Unfortunately not all are worth the trouble and still others
are

not accessible with JAWS. At this time I use both VLC witch does a good
enough job and WMP which is fine but rather restrictive. I'm referring
here

to playback and neither ripping nor burning as I use Nero express for
burning, and now and then Express burn. For ripping I use CDEX which I
like. I used to use Reel player but when I got my PC reformatted I never
did reinstall it. My question is how does Winamp compare with the other
media players I've mentioned? I have never observed this player being
used

nor of course tried it. Is it accessible with JAWS 12 and or do you need
scripts to access it's functions? How is the playback quality and
response

time. Sometimes the latest version isn't the best version so in your
opinion, what version is the most successful? Finally, what other
players
would you recommend, free or otherwise. The important thing is ease of
use,
it is of little use if the sound quality is the best in the world but if
you
can't use it with a screen reader then it is a waste of time. All
comments

will be welcome and read. Walter.

Hello I want to know these speakers you are describing are they the best
on the market that are accessible to us or is there sonie ones and
creative labs ones as well I am just trying to find out everyone's
opinion on here about speakers before purchasing them.

Okay, as I remember here's what's in the Altec Lansing Expressions
Ultra Box apart from mounds of packing which is absolute proof that us
humans are descended from apessmile.

2 satellite 2-way speakers
1 Sub-Woofer
1 control panel
1 3.5MM-3.5MM jack lead
1 manual
1 3.5MM socket to 2 RCA jack adapter

To the control panel, its round and consists of a number of controls.

As you'll see it looks like a mini witches hat, the hat itself turns in
either direction, you'll hear or feel it click as you turn it, each
time it clicks the faster the control.

For example by default the knob controls the volume, turn it to the
first click clockwise and the volume increases slowly, turn to the next
click and volume increase is more rapid and so on.

On the top of the controller are 3 buttons, 2 which are big and a
middle button which is small.

The upper of the 2 big buttons is your treble, press once and then turn
the knob to adjust treble.

The lower button is your bass, press once and then turn knob to adjust
base.

The smaller button in the middle is your power button, press once to
turn power on and press again to turn power off.

This button has another default, if held down for 3 seconds the
speakers are reset to their default volume, bass and treble settings.

Now their could be more options and settings I don't know about, I
mentioned that the manual isn't the readable type so everything I've
mentioned here I've found out by playing around with the system.

am
paranoid. There is a little piece that looks like a splitter for input
but
it is odd that it doesn't connect to a male piece. Do you need an
extra

corde like the one that goes from the control to the pc to go from the
splitter to the controller? Also I am not finding the power button on
the

sub woofer itself.

Yeah, the alternative source input did strike me too! if it is then I
can
find a way to switch to the thing, problem with the Altec Lansing
manuals is
that they're very graphic and I can understand that, after all when
dealing
with things like these speakers its probably much easier to show
pictures of
how to connect and install rather than ramble on about the connection
and

installation process, they're not too difficult to figure out anyway.

Now on another aspect of this speaker system, I found a page on the
Net
which lists the actual specs of the system so if anyone's interested
I'll

post to the list.

2011-12-03 Thread André van Deventer
Jim

Does Iriver still make mp3 players I wonder or was the venerable h300 series
the last one?

They were remarkable for their time I think. Bulky yes but they did very
well especially regarding recording and playback. They also had
surprisingly good internal microphones while the noise of the internal hard
drive was negligible. But of course it did not have many of the fancy
functions of the Ipod series of players. It probably depended what you
wanted from such a machine. I would not be surprised if some folks still
use theres.
