Goldwave problem
Hi I seem to have got stuck with gold wave. It’s stopped going to the end or beginning with ctrl end and home which can be very inconvenient when setting markers. Whatever I do, it seems to stay with the cursor. It was working fine earlier today but I don’t know what keypress I’ve pressed to stop it working correctly. I thought I would then reinstall the scripts after resetting the Keyboard options, but can’t find the scripts I had. 1. Should I reinstall Goldwave? 2. Where can I obtain the latest scripts. Re: Help with Gold Wave
Hi You could use the voice over effect - you can adjust where the clipboard sound appears by setting the in marker before calling up the voice over effect. Once in the voice over effect then you can adjust the start fade and end fade and the amount you wish the background music to be lowered by - it is set at -18 which sounds as if it might do just what you want. Hope this helps. gordon McFarlane -Original Message- From: Humberto Rodriguez Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2012 2:59 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Help with Gold Wave Hello, I need to mix the sound of the clipboard on top of a file of background music, with the volume of the music being reduced to about 20% or 30%. When I mix with Control-M the volume of the background is not reduced, when I override with Control-K it is completely obliterated. I cannot find where to adjust the volume while mixing. Gold wave and clipping
Hi Has anyone using Jaws found a way to find out the recording level while recording? This would be to avoid clipping. Also where do I look to find the highest peak of a file so that I know if it has been clipped once recording. Is it possible to set recording levels without sight to avoid clipping? Hi Can I ask if the compressor mentioned here would be best employed as an input for 2 mikes to avoid clipping before going into a mixer, or to compress/balance the signal coming out of the mixer before it goes into the line in of the soundcard which will then be streamed. Perhaps both? Thanks. I'm looking to do some internet radio broadcasting and, having found that broadcasting directly through my computer or soundcard makes my microphone sound horrible (muffled, buzzing noise behind vocals, popping when turned on/off, etc), I'm looking for a suitable and accessible 4-channel mixer which I can use to channel my soundcard and microphone. I'd also like to have the option of plugging headphones into it so that I can hear the results of my work as it happens, and features such as being able to use more than one channel at once (such as talking over the start/end of a track) are also very important. Unfortunately I'm very short of space, so I need something which has good quality output but which is as compact as possible. I know this is quite a specific set of requirements, but if anyone knows of such a model which is accessible for use by someone with total sight loss (no issues with seeing lights showing feedback etc), I'd be grateful to hear details. I'd also appreciate advice on any adaptors which I might need to help me plug 3.5 mm jacks and an XLR microphone into such a machine, as this is my first time of exploring this area of production. Re: tapin radio
Hi I had this problem a while ago with Tapin radio and PHilip the creator of it went a long way to getting it to work for me even updating the programme a couple of times. Hopefully the following will help. 1. Make sure you've the latest version 2. Unfortunately I've had a hard drive crash and can't install Tapin radio at present so I'm going from memory - if what I say from now on doesn't fit with the programme options give me a day or so and I'll be exact) Some sound cards seem to work on different bit rates and although mine was new it didn't work. Philip put an option into the Advanced options to allow different soundcards (older ones and newer ones) to access the sound. Once you tick this box - it's the difference between 32 and 16 bit - once the box is ticked (or if it's ticked then unticked) your soundcard should give out the sound.) I apologise that I can't be exact but I thought it might just be clear enough to get you going. I should be up and running in a day or so. If you contact Philip at the support in Tapin radio I'm sure he'll be able to guide you more exactly if my instructions don't work. I have not used the Zoom recorder, so I can't comment on it. As to which is better, the DM-520 or the Ls-7: In my opinion, the button configuration and the case are better with the DM-520. The audio quality on the dm-520 is unquestionably good. The case, with its kickstand and flap that you can open, is far superior to the sleeve case for the LS-7. The sound quality on the LS-7 is better -- fuller, even more life-like. There is a variable low-cut filter that, if you set it to 100Hz, does cut down on wind noise if you're making outside recordings. The central mic does improve the sound quality. And you can put up to a 32GB SDHC card in the LS-7. It's a tough call. If you've been happy with the Dm-5, I'd go with that -- although, at least a couple of days ago, the LS-7 was cheaper on amazon. It all depends on what your wife plans to use the recorder for. Ironically, the crappy case on the LS-7 is a major drawback; there is no belt clip or kickstand, and you can't fold down the top flap while keeping the recorder in its case. Hope this helps. Recording Studios
Hi Does anyone operate a recording mixer that is accessible (probably using more buttons and knobs with a minimum of menus) I know there used to be A tascam that allowed some inputs and the ability to record individual and mixed tracks to hard drive built in. Or even an SD card. I would like 4 inputs or more which can be recorded. Is there anything accessible out there like a porta studio etc.? Re: audio restoration software
Hi Dave I've used quite a few packages for audio restoration in the past and each usually have their own forté. I've not tried Sound Forge and I know it has good reports about its noise reduction etc. One program I like for versatility - and it claims to be the best of its kind - is Diamond Cut 8 (DC8) available from www.tracertek.com I've usec versions 5, 6 & 7 and have had good results. When I recently upgraded to version 8 it became inaccessible, but with a call to the technical help people, they pointed out a feature which restored the interface to an earlier one and therefore made it accessible again. It has a wonderful variety of cleaners and enhancers - each with their own presets and fine tuning. Most of the boxes can be tabbed around and selections made. The latest version is slightly less accessible than Version 5 - you may have to use the Jaws cursor or the Window eyes equivalent to make some choices, but once you knowwhat you're looking for things do get easier. There are menus and keyboard shortcuts and results can be good. One limitation I've found with it is the navigation and selecting of parts of files. It's great to work on a whole file and noise reduce - if I wish to use part of a file then I edit it to size in Goldwave then import it into DC8 - although it's annoying to have to do so the results are probably worth it. There are one or two nice features in this program - there is an auto clean and enhance which works on the file dynamically as it is running, adjusting itself to the changes in the file. This can be fine tuned too. You can also chain various effects to get the best - they all work simultaneously. Also there is a great batch editor built in which allows all the filters etc. to be preselected and executed on a large number of files at a time. When I upgraded recently, I also bought their small preamp which connects to the output of your turntable - it changes the inputted sound by applying a ria curve to get a more authentic sound. You then use the features in the program to clean up and enhance your file and reapply the correct ria curve and the sound is thought to be as good as you'll get at this level. I also bouth their DVDs on a variety of subjects, in cluding audio theory, cleaning 78s, vinyl and other media, etc. They can be 20 or 30 dollars each but when I purchased the 5 disks I was given them for 50 dollars, very much worthwhile for dealing with a steep learning curve. Some people may have other comments on this program but for my money it's probably one of the best in its range. I think there are good offers to be had on it from the website. It's a dedicated program for noise reduction and enhancement and with one or two other features thrown in. It also has a live function, in which any input can be filterd immediately live. Hope this is of help. Gordon McFarlane -Original Message- From: Dave Bahr Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2011 11:46 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: audio restoration software Hi list, I am purposefully going to ask a fairly vague question because I'd really like to hear multiple opinions and suggestions. I'm wondering if anyone here is involved in restoring78s and lps through software, and if so, what software do you use and how accessible do you find it? Allow me to elaborate on my current setup if you don't mind. I am presently using goldwave the most but have tried audition and soundforge. I know that jfw has scripts for sound forge but am a window-eyes user. As far as audition is concerned, I can't figure out a way to navigate vst plugins which audition seems to rely heavily on. So goldwave works well and is pretty accessible. But I need more powerful filters than the program will allow. I know that there is a pc version of protools but that is, from what I understand, for sequencing and creating music, not restoring it. I don't know what the pro people use, I'm thinking of the late John R. Davies of jsp records here, they might still use analogue methods for all I know. So, thoughts and discussion is encouraged on this one, I'm interested to see what people have to say. I realize that a lot of the process has a lot to do with finding the best source material available, i'm thinking Mosaic Records and their ability to make the recordings of Bix Beiderbecke into fantastically rich works of art. However, unless you have fantastic connections, it's hard to get into the columbia or victor vaults and use the metal masters and, in the case of paramount records and dial, they don't exist. So, bring it on, and if anyone is interested in discussing this with me off list, feel free to email me. I am just eager to learn. -- Dave c. bahr To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
Tapin Radio again
Hi After my last message in which I said when I choose a radio station it changes the play button to stop but then after a few seconds reverts to play again, I’ve discovered something else. When I go into the Advanced preferences it seems to choose ‘No sound’ and although I try to change the soundcard to my new one an Asus, it always reverts to ‘no sound’. How do I make sure this sound card is being used. If you get the full version of Nero and if you have 4 drives connected you can copy 4 disks at once, after you have made an image of the original. Re: Question about mixing in Goldwave
Hi You could also use the voice over function in the effects menu. You do all that's been suggested so far, i.e. up to selecting the voice file and copying it to the clipboard (control C). In voice over set the first edit field to where you wish the file to start, probably leave the second edit field at 1 second although it can be adjusted for a slower or quicker change, press OK and you will find the music plays at normal level but when your speech begins, the background music reduces to let the speech come over clearly. When the speech finishes the music increases again. If you find the background music too loud or quiet, then you can adjust the amount it reduces in the 3rd and 4th edit fields in Voice Over. Am I likely to be able to stream video and audio from the net or my network PC? Or will it just work with audio? 2. Even if it doesn't speak, can I access one particular folder in my Network PC so that using the remote for the amplifier, I can go through the files in that folder even if I can't hear which is which. 3. Is there an;y other benefit for a blind person in having a network connection in an amplifier e.g. can I set my computer to stream and pick it up with the amplifier? Yes, Switch is good - I use it too. Can't you play the file and then record it in a recorder e.g. Audacity? It's not quite the same but this might supply a solution? Re: Adobe Audition
Hi again The last Audition to be accessible to Jaws was Ver 1.5. If you can get this then you should be able to access the multitrack options. It does need particular jaws scripts though and they may only work with earlier versions of Jaws and only up to Windows XP. I haven't tried this in Windows 7 - except that it hangs up Windows 7 64 bit - it might just work in 32 bit but I haven't tried. Re: Help With Video Redo TV Suite
Hi To move a minute is control and left and right arrows. (There is a list of shortcuts in the help I think) There is a better way of making cuts on one file than saving the individual bits for later editing. 1. Make sure you're in Scene mode (found in Tools menu, Options.). Then go to Edit menu and look in the General tab of Preferences. You need to tick the option 'Queue to batch clears cuts' (This makes sure that once you've selected a scene and sent it to the batch queue, the main file is clear for more editing, without needing reloaded. 2. Go to the tools menu and find Batch Manager. 3. Set destination folder (for files) It might be useful here to give a prefix for each file e.g. cut. 4. Return to the main screen by tabbing to 'Done'. 5. Make your first scene by marking it's beginning and end. (Once you have your start and end points individually, right click or press the context menu key and choose set start or end respectively.) Then press the context menu again and choose 'Selection' (3rd one down.) 6. Press control 'b' - this will send the file to the batch manager. A save window comes up - here you can add a filename if you wish to the path. 7. Once you have pressed save, the file is saved to the batch list and the main file remains intact and ready for your next scene to be defined. 8. Once you've defined all your scenes, go into the batch manager again (Tools menu) and tab round to save and execute. You can save a batch file first, then the program goes about making all the files from your main file (without doing it any harm.) I've found that it doesn't always work unless you keep the path suggested by the save window - you can however make alterations to the file name at the end of the path.) Hope this helps. Gordon McFarlane -- From: "Ford Blackwell" Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2010 12:22 AM To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Subject: Re: Help With Video Redo TV Suite Try this: 1. open the file in the file menu. 2. start a cut whereever you want to start it and put a finish mark right before the place that you want to save. 3. move past the part you want to save and start a new cut and move to the end of the file and put in an end marker. 4. Hit cut selections and save the file in a diferrent location from where you have your original file saved. 5. Repeat this process as many times as sections you want to save from the original saving to separate and distinct files with each save. It's time consuming to do it this way, but you preserve your original file in case you make a mistake and have to start over. Then combine the files and use whatever program to burn the resulting file(s). You can move frame by frame by holding down the left and right arrows for finer movements. I wish I knew a way to move in say one minute increments and five minute increments, but I haven't taken the time to figure that out. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further. Re: adobe audition
Hi I've used Audition for years now but only in the 1.5 version. I use the scripts and find them very accessible especially with the Multitrack section. They were written for Jaws 7 but I did manage to install them in XP into the Jaws 9 and 10 enu setting, but they only appeared to work for me when in the Jaws settings in the User section, not the All User section. I didn't find them too good for positioning a file in a track, but for recording 8 or 4 tracks then editing they were great. I'm now onto Sonar and although the Audio effects are more limited than in Audition they work well, especially the time/pitch shift. I believe version 8.5 is better for Audio effects etc. and will find out soon when I purchase it. If you can get a copy of Audition 1.5 it may be fairly cheap - certainly cheaper than the Sonar/Caketalking route - but if you want to keep up to date then unless someone writes scripts for the Audition v3 or above versions with their new interface, then you'll be working with an old technology with older algorithms. They're good so it probably doesn't matter, but, assuming effects and options get better there will come a time when it may get left behind a bit. Splitting mp3 files
Hi I'm looking for advice either on using Windows Media Player 11 or on how to split MP3 files quickly and easily. Recently I downloaded a 10 hour mp3 book. I can speed it up in Windows Media Player but on using the Seek option or Fast Forward one I keep getting stuck on the increments Media player allows. I cannot seem just to fast forward to the place I stopped so I can restart. If I were to cut up the file, say in Gold Wave, is there an easy way of specifying the sections to break it into, then saving each into more manageable files for playback in WMP at the fast speed? Downloadable audio book source - Left Behind
Hi Some of you may be aware of the Left Behind Series books. For a long time now I've been trying to finish reading the series but can't get a hold of the books. audible.co.uk don't have the full set, whereas audible.com does - I can't join the latter as I live in the UK. The books I'm looking for are the prequels and sequel - The Rising, The Regime, The Rapture and Kingdom Come - all in unabridged format. Google searches aren't helpful Can anyone suggest another site from which they can be purchased and downloaded? Thanks. Sky Player
Hi I asked before but the player was new then. I'm wondering if anyone's found their way through the Sky Player which purports to play sky channels you may be subscribed to on your home computer. It also has a large back selection of programs you may have missed. I signed up (getting through the password graphic stage with sighted help) After this I can see much to play but although I'm logged in most of it seems to be chargeable. It doesn't seem too clear as to why it's not quite as simple as the BBC one, just click on download etc. I did manage to get a sky news clip play and it worked fine, although there's no idea yet of keyboard shortcuts to navigate the file. It does seem accessible, but finding something to watch at present is difficult, as far as I can see. One other problem is that when I go to the watch live TV page to see the channels Internet Explorer gives me the 'Don't Send' button. Hopefully someone else may have gone this way before and advise us of a clear path. Regards. A Reliable database for music
Hi I've both ripped my CDs in Itunes and Windows Media Player and found that Itunes tends to be much more accurate when labelling songs. I suppose it's down to the online database used by each program I've tried updating the unrecognised disks and wrongly labelled disks in Windows Media Player without much success as I don't find the pages too easy to read and make choices from. Can I submit my already ripped disks to another database or can I associate Windows Media Player with another database, and if so which ones do people recommend as for being accurate? USB turntable cassette
HiI've a couple of questions and am looking for some advice/opinions. I have an old turntable and bouble cassette which I put through a mixer then take the signal digitally to my computer. I'm thinking of changing for the IOn Turntable and the IOn Twin Cassette deck which both have USB output to the computer, bypassing anything else. In the past I've altered the signal with the mixer but am generally of the op9inion that it's better to take in; the raw signal then alter it on the computer. Any thoughts here? Secondly I use Sonar, Audition and DC7. I notice that these Ion items come with Audacity - does this mean that they will work better with this program or will my other programs be better? Also for a while there was some talk on this list as to whether Audacity's latest version was accessible to Jaws and it was suggested that a prior version would be better. Is this still the case, and if so will most of the functions I wish to use to clean up tapes and records still be on this earlier version. I'd appreciate anyone who has experience of this passing on some info. Regards. Hi Jim Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I don't have one but was thinking of buying it from a website. On rockbox it says all the E200 series will take rockbox but I'm not sure if this includes all the numbers in the E200s. I've no idea if it's a new version, but suspect it's one of the old ones. Re: A Question About Sound Tape-Repost
Hi Josh Audition 1.5 is probably as good as the others, more so in fact as it has a complete multitrack section which is fairly comprehensive, allowing multieffects, etc. I think I saw a copy going quite cheaply on a website recently - Google might bring this up - the latest version is version 3 so earlier versions become quite affordable. Re: Adobe Audition Scripts
Hi Ted, I haven't tried them out fully, but when I put the files into the local user jaws settings enu folder - not the all users one - they certainly seemed to function as normal. A quick check of the multitrack view showed all the tracks working as normal. Tabbing through the options for mute, arm effects, input output seem to be functional. My only gripe is that I can't seem to get dialog boxes to work except with the jaws cursor - this used not to be the case. I've put Jaws 7.1 and the latest version 9 and they both seem to work except for the dialog problem. I would be interested to know if others have a similar problem. Perhaps I should have used Jaws 6 to avoid this. At present I use Jaws 7 for the multitrack view and switch to Jaws 9 without the scripts in order to use the edit view which works fairly easily without scripts. Hope this helps. Naming tracks and albums in Windows Media Player 11
Hi On comparison when ripping my CDs in Itunes and WMP11 I find that the naming of the tracks and albums is much more accurate in Itunes. Having done about 150 albums, about 24 are wrong - the name of the album can be right but the tracks are not labelled correctly. I wish to stay with WMP11 as I wish the WMA lossless format. How can I correct the problem. Do I have to re-rip or can I get some other naming site to scan the already ripped tracks and re name them? Can I also re-assign a different naming site to WMP11? Adobe Audition Scripts
Hi I wonder if anyone else who uses the scripts can help. I've tried the scripts on Audition 1.5 with Jaws 7, and Jaws 9, and they work pretty well in multitrack view. But I always find in whichever machine I'm on, that the scripts make navigation difficult by dialog boxes in the Edit View, e.g. you can enter a dialog box but can't tab round it - you have to use the Jaws cursor. Portable recording
Hi I am currently looking at recording in small studio ways. I've investigated the Korg D888 which is like a mixer but can record 8 tracks at once to a built in hard drive - I've been told that it may be quite accessible as it does not so much depend on screens as buttons. It has editing facilities on board. The second is smaller - the Zoom H4 - a pocket sized 4 track recorder with built in mikes and room for 2 mike inputs - it also has built in effects. This would be good for small portable recordings. First of all, can anyone tell me from their own experience as to how accessible they may be, and if possible, how good or bad the features are. Thanks for your hoped for input. Regards. On a cursory look it would appear that this program may be fairly accessible as all the menus are read, etc. Can anyone confirm this or give tips? Re: New I or J tunes
Hi Larry The previous Jtunes was a payable upgrade - I'm not sure but I think it's about £30. It works fairly well and certainly makes Itunes workable. It has one or two restrictions but in general is good. The new version sounds just what we need and so as you can see I'm keen to get it. Regards. Audition Scripts
Hi I've been using the scripts for years but now I need to put them on a new machine they're not working yet on the Multitrack view. Can anyone help. I believe they don't work with jaws later then version 7 - when I looked for various version 7s I found a few and the one I had in which the scripts worked wasn't there. I've downloaded the latest version 7 anyway 7.1.500 I've made sure the scripts are in the right folder - the enu for my version 7. I seem to remember that if they didn't work before some scripts might need re-compiling. I can't remember how to do this. Secondly you could press Insert control and T to train the scripts but so far I can't get this to work either. Can anyone clarify any of these points? Thanks. Re: Karaoke program
Hi Vy fam You can use Adobe audition for this - it's not perfect but it does work quite well with a bit of time and adjusting. With Jaws only version 1.5 is fairly accessible. There is a program called Vocal Remover from Power Karaoke (I think that's the name of the provider) - you could google it - it's quite cheap at about 29 dollars, it is accessible, although you'll need to use the jaws cursor for some functions, but it's not as good as Audition. It works better on some tracks more than others - it's good to have both programs. Karaoke program
Hi Can anyone advise of a program which will allow the playback of wavs, mp3s or wma files and at the same time taking a feed from a microphone in order to let someone sing along with the track. Ideally it would be good if there was a reverb echo facility and even more ideally the opportunity to record the results. Is there a dedicated program like this, which hopefully is accessible? Can Winamp go any of the way to meeting this? Would I just be better with a small portable mixer? I would like to do it all in a laptop but don't know if I'm expecting too much. Regards. Re: Other Audio Editors And Jaws Scripts
Larry I'm sure you'll know about the automatic scratch hiss and hum removal preset in DC6 and 7. It actually can be pretty good at adjusting to various problems over a large file. The noise reduction presets are also excellent - there's usually something which works. The compression and expansion along with the general exciter presets are varied and excellent. Version 7 claims to get rid of the many sound artifacts which can occur. I also have their audio mentor which interfaces with the main program linking and using noise reduction and exciter presets effectively. I've to use the jaws cursor here but it's good. The couple of problems we have in not having a fully accessible program are as follows: 1. The file navigation and selection tools need linking into standard Windows keypresses, as in Audition and Gold Wave. At present if I'm really stuck I'll take a noise sample from the file in Audition - just a second or two - then analyse it in DC7, make a preset, then apply it to the whole file. Similarly if I'm really stuck I'll break the whole file into time sections which I take careful note of and after performing cleaning in DC7 I then rebuild the file so as not to be one frame out. 2. The other place I would like access to is the multitab editor where you can chain a variety of effects so that they are all applied at once rather than just one at a time. You can then put together your favourites and make a thorough and quicker difference. 3. The preset boxes are pretty good but it would be good to have the 'fine tuning' sliders more easy to work. At present they will work with the Jaws cursor but it would be good to make adjustments by tabbing to the particular area and making changes which you can hear instantly. To get round this I'll place the Jaws cursor in the preset combo box, tab to the preview button, once it has started use the jaws cursor to go down the list of presets, thus hearing each effect on the file in turn. It does work with not too much problem. As you say it's a wonderfully comprehensive sound editing package and so worth all this trouble. Have you tried Audition 1.5 (old now but effective) I can use this to home in on clicks and zap them. Regards.
